The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the user’s guide for your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW:

If your computer is protected by a firewall and you are unable to network print or scan with your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW, you may need to configure the firewall settings. If you are using the Windows Firewall and you installed the drivers using the steps in the installer, the necessary firewall settings have already been set. If you are using any other personal firewall software, see the User’s Guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer for instructions on how to configure it correctly for your printer.

The control panel of your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW has several buttons and a display screen to help you operate the machine.

1. Power On/Off

• Turn the machine on by pressing the power button.

• Turn the machine off by pressing and holding the power button. The LCD displays [Shutting Down] and stays on for a few seconds before turning off.

2. Function Buttons

• Copy/Scan Options: Press to access temporary settings for scanning or copying.

• WiFi (for wireless models): Press the WiFi button to launch the wireless installer on your computer. A solid WiFi light indicates a connection, while a blinking light indicates a connection issue or that it’s in the process of connecting.

• Scan: Press to switch the machine to Scan Mode.

• 2 in 1 (ID) Copy: Press to copy both sides of an identification card onto a single page.

3. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

4. Menu Buttons

• Menu: Press to access the menu for programming machine settings.

• Clear: Press to delete entered data or cancel the current setting.

• OK: Press to store your machine settings.

• ▲ or ▼: Press to scroll up or down through menus and options.

5. Stop/Exit

• Press to stop an operation or exit from a menu.

6. Start buttons

• Mono Start: Press to start making copies in monochrome or to start scanning documents (in colour, grey, or monochrome depending on the scan setting).

• Colour Start: Press to start making copies in full colour or to start scanning documents (in colour, grey, or monochrome depending on the scan setting).

Follow these steps to load paper into the paper tray of your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press the green release levers to slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are using.

3. Fan the stack of paper well to prevent jams.

4. Load paper into the paper tray with the printing surface face down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼). Overfilling the tray can cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

Note: When you load a different size and type of paper, you must also change the Paper Size and Paper Type settings in the machine’s menu.

For correct printing on preprinted paper, follow these orientation guidelines for your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW:

For 1-sided printing:

• Place the paper with the printing surface face down.

• The top edge of the paper should be towards the front of the paper tray.

For automatic 2-sided printing (long edge binding):

• Place the paper with the printing surface face up.

• The bottom edge of the paper should be towards the front of the paper tray.

After loading the paper, you must also change the machine’s settings:

1. Press Menu.

2. Use ▲ or ▼ to select [Printer] and press OK.

3. Select [2-sided] and press OK.

4. Select [Single Image] and press OK.

5. Select [2-sided Feed] and press OK.

6. Press Stop/Exit.

To load paper, labels, or envelopes into the manual feed slot of your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW, follow these steps:

1. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the face-down output tray.

2. Open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper you are using.

4. Using both hands, place one sheet of paper (or one envelope/label sheet) in the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up. Insert it until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

5. Send your print job to the machine. Change your print preferences in the Print screen before sending the job.

6. After the printed page comes out, load the next sheet of paper if you need to print more pages. Repeat for each page.

Important Notes:

• For labels or envelopes, it is recommended to open the machine’s back cover (face up output tray) to create a straight paper path and prevent curling. For envelopes, you may also need to pull down the two grey levers inside the back cover.

• Do not put more than one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot at one time, as it may cause a jam.

• Make sure the paper is straight and in the correct position to avoid skewed printouts or jams.

To ensure your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW uses the correct settings for the paper loaded in the tray, follow these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [General Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Tray Setting] option, and then press OK.

4. To change the paper type, press ▲ or ▼ to display [Paper Type], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the paper type ([Thin Paper], [Plain Paper], [Thick Paper], or [Recycled Paper]), and then press OK.

7. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the paper size ([A4], [Letter], [Legal], etc.), and then press OK.

8. Press Stop/Exit to finish.

The Check Size setting on your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW prompts you with a message when you remove the paper tray, asking if you want to change the paper size and type. The default setting is On. To change it, follow these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [General Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Tray Setting] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Check Size] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [On] or [Off], and then press OK.

To load a document for copying or scanning using the scanner glass on your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW, follow these steps:

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document on the scanner glass face down.

3. Align the corner of the page with the upper left corner of the scanner glass, using the document guidelines.

4. Close the document cover. If the document is thick, like a book, press down gently on the cover.

The BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW has maximum unscannable and unprintable areas from the edges of the paper. Your output will not reflect anything in these areas. The measurements can vary depending on the paper size and application settings.

Note: Copy measurements are for a 1 in 1 copy at 100% document size.

To ensure desirable performance and prevent damage to your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW, you should test paper samples before purchasing in bulk. Importantly, DO NOT use certain types of paper that may not perform well or could cause damage. Avoid using paper that:

• Is designed for inkjet printing.

• Is highly textured.

• Is extremely smooth or shiny.

• Is curled or warped.

• Is coated or has a chemical finish.

• Is damaged, creased, or folded.

• Exceeds the recommended weight specification in the guide.

• Has tabs and staples.

• Has letterheads using low-temperature dyes or thermography.

• Is multipart or carbonless.

Using these types of paper may damage your machine, and this damage is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

To cancel a print job on your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW, press the Stop/Exit button on the control panel. To cancel multiple print jobs at once, press and hold the Stop/Exit button for four seconds.

If you are experiencing problems with print quality, you can print a test page from your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW by following these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Printer] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [to PC] option, and then press OK.

6. Press OK. If prompted for a PIN, enter the four-digit PIN for the destination computer and press OK.

7. To use the default scan settings, press Mono Start or Colour Start. The machine will begin scanning. Follow the LCD instructions to complete the job.

8. To change scan settings for this document, press Options or Copy/Scan Options. The machine will prompt you to set the [Scan Type], [Resolution], [File Type], [Document Size], and other settings. Use ▲ or ▼ to select your desired option for each setting, and press OK to proceed to the next one.

9. After setting the options, press Mono Start or Colour Start to begin scanning.

Here are some common error messages for the BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW and how to resolve them:

If there is a paper jam in the paper tray of your BROTHER DCP-L3517CDW, follow these steps to clear it:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Slowly pull out the jammed paper. Pulling the paper downward with both hands can make it easier to remove.

• Factory Reset: Resets all machine settings to the original factory settings and erases all personal data in the machine’s memory. This is recommended when you dispose of the machine.

5. After selecting a reset type, follow the on-screen prompts. The LCD will display [Reboot OK?]. Press ▲ to confirm and reboot the machine to complete the reset process.

When the LCD indicates that a toner cartridge needs to be replaced, follow these steps:

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Open the top cover until it locks in the open position. WARNING: The machine’s internal parts may be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly for the colour shown on the LCD.

4. Push down the green lock lever on the drum unit and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit assembly.

5. Unpack the new toner cartridge.

6. Remove the protective cover from the new cartridge.

7. Insert the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

8. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back several times. Ensure the tab is returned to the home position (▲).

9. Slide the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine. Match the toner cartridge colour to the same colour label on the machine.

10. Close the machine’s top cover. Do not turn the machine off until the display returns to Ready Mode.
