The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the user’s guide for your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW:

Before using your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW, please consider the following:

• Do not use this product outside the country of purchase as it may violate the wireless telecommunication and power regulations of that country.

• Not all models are available in all countries.

• The screens in the User’s Guide are for illustration purposes only and may differ from the actual screens.

• The contents of this guide and the specifications of this product are subject to change without notice.

• This documentation is for both MFC and DCP models.

Before attempting any printing operation on your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW, confirm the following:

• Make sure you have installed the Brother software and drivers.

• For USB or network cable users: Make sure the interface cable is physically secure.

If your computer is protected by a firewall and you are unable to network print, network scan, or PC-FAX, you may need to configure the firewall settings. If you are using the Windows® Firewall and you installed the drivers using the steps in the installer, the necessary firewall settings have been already set. If you are using any other personal firewall software, see the User’s Guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer.

The control panel on your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW has several buttons and an LCD screen to help you operate the machine.

1. Power On/Off:

• Turn the machine on by pressing the Power button.

• Turn the machine off by pressing and holding the Power button. The LCD displays [Shutting Down] and stays on for a few seconds before turning off.

2. Function Buttons:

• Copy/Scan Options: Press to access temporary settings for scanning or copying.

• WiFi (for wireless models): Press the WiFi button and launch the wireless installer on your computer. Follow the on-screen instructions. A solid WiFi light means you are connected; a blinking light means the connection is down or in progress.

• Scan: Press to switch the machine to Scan Mode.

• 2 in 1 (ID) Copy: Press to copy both sides of an identification card onto a single page.

3. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): Displays messages to help you set up and use the machine. In Ready or Copy Mode, it shows Type of copy, Number of copies, Quality, Contrast, and Copy ratio.

4. Menu Buttons:

• Menu: Press to access the Menu for programming your machine settings.

• Clear: Press to delete entered data or cancel the current setting.

• OK: Press to store your machine settings.

• ▲ or ▼: Press to scroll up or down through menus and options.

5. Stop/Exit:

• Press to stop an operation.

• Press to exit from a menu.

6. Start buttons:

• Mono Start: Press to start making copies in monochrome or to start scanning documents (in colour, grey, or monochrome depending on the scan setting).

• Colour Start: Press to start making copies in full colour or to start scanning documents (in colour, grey, or monochrome depending on the scan setting).

Follow these steps to load paper in the paper tray:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the paper. Press the green release levers to slide the paper guides.

3. Fan the stack of paper well.

4. Load paper in the paper tray with the printing surface face down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▾▾▾). Overfilling the paper tray will cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

When you load a different size and type of paper in the tray, you must also change the Paper Size and Paper Type settings in the machine, or on your computer.

Follow these steps to load paper, labels, or envelopes in the manual feed slot:

1. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the face down output tray.

2. Open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper you are using.

4. Using both hands, place one sheet of paper (or one envelope) in the manual feed slot until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. When you feel the machine pull it in, let go.

• Load paper/labels/envelopes into the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up.

• Make sure the media is straight and in the correct position.

• Do not put more than one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot at one time, as it may cause a jam.

5. Send your print job to the machine. You may need to change your print preferences in the Print screen before sending the job.

6. After the printed page comes out, load the next sheet of paper. Repeat for each page you want to print.

For printing on labels or envelopes, you may need to open the back cover (face up output tray) for a straight paper path. For envelopes, you will also need to pull down the two grey levers inside the back cover before printing and return them to their original position after printing.

To change the paper size and type settings on the LCD of your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW, follow these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [General Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Tray Setting] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Type] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Thin Paper], [Plain Paper], [Thick Paper], or [Recycled Paper] option, and then press OK.

6. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Size] option, and then press OK.

7. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [A4], [Letter], [Legal], [Executive], [A5], [A5(Long Edge)], [A6], [Mexico Legal], [India Legal], or [Folio] option, and then press OK.

8. Press Stop/Exit.

The following table shows the maximum unscannable and unprintable areas from the edges of commonly-used paper sizes for the BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW. Your output will not reflect anything in these areas.

Some types of paper may not perform well or may cause damage to your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW. Do not use paper that:

• is highly textured

• is extremely smooth or shiny

• is curled or warped

• is coated or has a chemical finish

• is damaged, creased or folded

• exceeds the recommended weight specification in this guide

• has tabs and staples

• has letterheads using low temperature dyes or thermography

• is multipart or carbonless

• is designed for inkjet printing

Using any of these types of paper may damage your machine. This damage is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

Use Secure Print to ensure confidential documents do not print until you enter a password on the machine’s control panel. The secure data is deleted from the machine when you turn it off.

From your computer:

1. Select the print command in your application.

2. Select Brother XXX-XXXX (where XXXX is your model name), and then click the printing properties or preferences button.

3. Click the Advanced tab.

4. Click the Settings button in the Secure Print field.

5. Select the Secure Print check box.

6. Type your four-digit password in the Password field. You must set a separate password for each document.

7. Type the User Name and Job Name in the text field, if needed.

8. Click OK to close the Secure Print Settings window.

9. Click OK.

10. Complete your print operation.

At your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW:

11. On the machine’s control panel, press Menu.

12. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Secure Print] option, and then press OK.

13. Press ▲ or ▼ to display your user name, and then press OK. The LCD displays the list of secured jobs for your name.

14. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the print job, and then press OK.

15. Enter your four-digit password, and then press OK.

16. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Print] option, and then press OK.

17. Press ▲ or ▼ to enter the number of copies you want.

18. Press OK. The machine prints the data.

After you have printed the secured data, it will be cleared from the machine’s memory.

To cancel a print job on your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW, press the Stop/Exit button. To cancel multiple print jobs, press and hold Stop/Exit for four seconds.

If you are having problems with print quality, follow these instructions to print a test page:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Printer] option, and then press OK.

3. (For Printer Emulation Supported models) Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Print Options] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Test Print] option, and then press OK.

5. Press Mono Start or Colour Start. The machine prints a Test Print page.

6. Press Stop/Exit.

You can send scanned photos or graphics directly to your computer using the Scan button on your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW. To make temporary changes to scan settings for a single job, follow these steps:

1. Load your document.

2. Press the (Scan) button.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [to PC] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Image] option, and then press OK.

5. If the machine is connected over the network, press ▲ or ▼ to select the destination computer.

6. Press OK. If prompted, enter the four-digit PIN for the computer and press OK.

7. To change scan settings for this document, press Options or Copy/Scan Options and proceed to the next step. To use default settings, press Mono Start or Colour Start and the machine will begin scanning.

8. The machine will prompt you to set various scan settings. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the desired option for each setting, and then press OK to proceed to the next setting. You can adjust:

• [Scan Type]

• [Resolution]

• [File Type]

• [Document Size]

• [Auto Deskew] (available for certain models)

• [Remove Bkg Clr] (available only for [Colour] and [Grey] options)

9. Press Mono Start or Colour Start. The machine starts scanning. If using the scanner glass, follow the LCD instructions to complete the scanning job.

To copy a document on your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW, follow these steps:

1. Make sure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

2. Place the document face down on the scanner glass.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to enter the number of copies you want.

4. Press Mono Start or Colour Start.

You can select an enlargement or reduction ratio to resize your copied data on the BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW.

1. Load your document.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to enter the number of copies you want.

3. Press Copy/Scan Options.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Enlarge/Reduce], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the enlargement or reduction ratio you want, and then press OK.

• If you select [Custom(25-400%)], press ▲ or ▼ to enter an enlargement or reduction ratio from [25%] to [400%] and then press OK.

6. Press Mono Start or Colour Start.

The N in 1 copy feature saves paper by copying two or four pages of your document onto one page of the copy.

1. Load your document.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to enter the number of copies you want.

3. Press Copy/Scan Options.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Page Layout], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Off(1 in 1)], [2 in 1 (P)], [2 in 1 (L)], [4 in 1 (P)] or [4 in 1 (L)], and then press OK.

6. Press Mono Start or Colour Start.

7. If you are using the scanner glass, after the machine scans the first page, place the next page on the scanner glass, and then press ▲ to select the [Yes] option.

8. After scanning all the pages, press ▼ to select the [No] option.

To sort multiple copies so they are stacked in page order (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3), follow these steps:

1. Load your document.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to enter the number of copies you want.

3. Press Copy/Scan Options.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Stack/Sort], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Sort], and then press OK.

6. Press Mono Start or Colour Start.

7. If using the scanner glass, place the next page on the scanner glass after the first page is scanned, and then press ▲ to select the [Yes] option.

8. After scanning all the pages, press ▼ to select the [No] option.

To copy an identification card onto one page, follow these steps:

1. Place an identification card face down near the upper left corner of the scanner glass. Ensure there is a gap of 4.0 mm or greater from the top and left edges.

2. Press 2 in 1 (ID) Copy.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to enter the number of copies you want.

4. Press Mono Start or Colour Start. The machine scans one side of the card.

5. After the machine has scanned the first side, turn over the identification card.

6. Press Mono Start or Colour Start to scan the other side.

To make 2-sided copies on your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW, follow these instructions:

1. Load your document.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to enter the number of copies you want.

3. Press Copy/Scan Options.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [2-sided], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display [Layout Long] or [Layout Short], and then press OK.

6. Select flip on long edge or flip on short edge, and then press OK.

7. Press ▲ or ▼ to display [2sided → 2sided] or [1sided → 2sided], and then press OK.

8. Press Mono Start or Colour Start.

9. If you are using the scanner glass, after the machine scans a page, place the next page on the scanner glass, and then press ▲ to select the [Yes] option.

10. After scanning all the pages, press ▼ to select the [No] option.

If the ‘Cover is Open’ error message appears on your BROTHER DCP-L3510CDW, it can be due to a few reasons:

• The top cover is not completely closed: Open and then firmly close the top cover of the machine.

• The fuser cover is not completely closed or paper was jammed: Open the back cover of the machine and ensure the fuser cover inside is closed securely. Also, check for any jammed paper inside the back of the machine and remove it before closing the fuser cover.

• The ADF cover is not completely closed: Close the ADF cover securely. If the error message remains, press Stop/Exit.

The ‘Cartridge Error’ message indicates that a toner cartridge is not installed correctly. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly for the colour that is indicated on the LCD.

2. Take out the toner cartridge from the drum unit, and then put it back into the drum unit again.

3. Re-install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back in the machine.

If the problem continues, contact Brother customer service or your local Brother dealer.

A ‘Jam’ message indicates that paper is stuck somewhere in the machine. The location will be specified on the LCD. Here are common jam locations and how to clear them:

• Jam 2-sided: The paper is jammed underneath the paper tray or the fuser unit. Remove the paper tray or open the back cover to gently remove the jammed paper.

• Jam Inside: The paper is jammed inside the machine. Open the top cover, remove the toner cartridges and drum unit assembly, and gently remove the jammed paper. Reinstall the assemblies and close the top cover.

• Jam Manual Feed: The paper is jammed in the manual feed slot. Gently remove the jammed paper from in and around the manual feed slot. Reload the paper and press Mono Start or Colour Start.

• Jam Rear: The paper is jammed in the back of the machine. Open the fuser cover and gently remove the jammed paper. Close the fuser cover.

• Jam Tray1: The paper is jammed in the paper tray. Pull the paper tray out completely and gently remove all jammed paper. Put the paper tray firmly back in the machine.

If you are experiencing print quality issues, try the following solutions based on the problem:

You can reset various settings on your machine. Unplug the interface cable before performing a Network, All Settings, or Factory Reset.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Initial Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Reset] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to choose the type of reset you want to perform, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ to select the option to reset the machine.

6. The LCD displays [Reboot OK?]. Press ▲ to reboot the machine and complete the reset.

Reset Functions Overview:

• Machine Reset: Resets settings like Language and temporary settings, but not fax jobs.

• Network Settings Reset: Resets the print server back to its default factory settings (including Password and IP Address).

• Address Book and Fax Settings Reset: Resets Address Book, programmed fax jobs, Station ID, and other fax-related settings.

• All Settings Reset: Resets all machine settings back to the factory settings.

• Factory Reset: Resets all machine settings and erases all data in the memory. Brother strongly recommends this operation when you dispose of the machine.

Follow these steps to replace a toner cartridge:

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Open the top cover until it locks in the open position. Wait for the machine’s internal parts to cool down before touching them.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly for the colour shown on the LCD.

4. Push down the green lock lever and remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit.

5. Unpack the new toner cartridge.

6. Remove the protective cover.

7. Insert the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

8. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back several times. Repeat this for all four corona wires. Be sure to return the green tab to the Home position (▲).

9. Slide the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine, matching the toner cartridge colour to the colour label on the machine.

10. Close the machine’s top cover. Do not turn the machine off or open the top cover again until the display returns to Ready Mode.

To replace the drum unit, follow these steps:

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and the top cover is closed.

2. Open the top cover until it locks in the open position. Wait for the machine to cool down.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly for the colour indicated on the LCD.

4. Push down the green lock lever and remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit.

5. Unpack the new drum unit and remove its protective cover.

6. Reinsert the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until it locks into place.

7. Slide the new drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the machine.

8. Close the machine’s top cover.

9. After replacing the drum unit, you must reset the drum counter:

• Make sure the machine’s cover is closed.

• Hold down OK as you press ▲.

• Press OK to select [Drum].

• Press ▲ or ▼ to display the toner colour for the drum unit you just replaced, and then press OK.

• Press ▲ to reset the drum counter.

To clean the scanner components, follow these instructions:

1. Press and hold the power button to turn the machine off.

2. Lift the document cover (1). Clean the white plastic surface (2) and scanner glass (3) underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water.

3. In the ADF unit, clean the white bar (1) and the scanner glass strip (2) underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water.

4. Close the document cover.

5. Press the power button to turn the machine on.

If you have print quality problems like light colours or white streaks, clean the LED heads as follows:

1. Press and hold the power button to turn the machine off.

2. Open the top cover until it locks in the open position.

3. Wipe each LED head window (1) with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth. Do not touch the windows with your fingers.

4. Close the machine’s top cover.

5. Press the power button to turn the machine on.

When you need to enter text, use the control panel buttons:

• Hold down or repeatedly press ▲ or ▼ to select a character from the list: 0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ(space)!”#$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[\]^_‘{|}~

• Press OK when the character or symbol you want is displayed, and then enter the next character.

• Press Clear to delete characters entered incorrectly.
