What are the main safety warnings for the BROAN ALLURE QS1 range hood?

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons when using your BROAN ALLURE QS1, please observe the following:

1. Use this unit only in the manner intended by the manufacturer.

2. Before servicing or cleaning the BROAN ALLURE QS1 unit, switch power off at the service panel and lock the service disconnecting means to prevent power from being switched on accidentally. When the service disconnecting means cannot be locked, securely fasten a prominent warning device, such as a tag, to the service panel.

3. Installation work and electrical wiring must be done by a qualified person(s) in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including fire-rated construction codes and standards.

4. Sufficient air is needed for proper combustion and exhausting of gases through the flue (chimney) of fuel burning equipment to prevent backdrafting. Follow the heating equipment manufacturer’s guideline and safety standards such as those published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the local code authorities.

5. When cutting or drilling into a wall or ceiling, do not damage electrical wiring and other hidden utilities.

6. To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not use this range hood with an additional speed control device.

7. Ducted fans must always be vented to the outdoors.

8. To reduce the risk of fire, use only metal ductwork.

9. Use with an approved cord-connection kit only.

10. This BROAN ALLURE QS1 unit must be grounded.

How can I reduce the risk of a range top grease fire with my BROAN ALLURE QS1?

To reduce the risk of a range top grease fire when using your BROAN ALLURE QS1, please observe the following:

1. Never leave surface units unattended at high settings. Boilovers cause smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite. Heat oils slowly on low or medium settings.

2. Always turn the BROAN ALLURE QS1 hood ON when cooking at high heat or when cooking flaming foods.

3. Clean ventilating fans frequently. Grease should not be allowed to accumulate on the fan or filter.

4. Use proper pan size. Always use cookware appropriate for the size of the surface element.

What should I do in the event of a range top grease fire while using my BROAN ALLURE QS1?

To reduce the risk of injury to persons in the event of a range top grease fire, observe the following (Based on “Kitchen Fire Safety Tips” published by NFPA):

1. SMOTHER FLAMES with a close-fitting lid, cookie sheet, or metal tray, then turn off the burner. BE CAREFUL TO PREVENT BURNS. If the flames do not go out immediately, EVACUATE AND CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.

2. NEVER PICK UP A FLAMING PAN – You may be burned.

3. DO NOT USE WATER, including wet dishcloths or towels – a violent steam explosion will result.

4. Use an extinguisher ONLY if:

A. You know you have a Class ABC extinguisher and you already know how to operate it.

B. The fire is small and contained in the area where it started.

C. The fire department is being called.

D. You can fight the fire with your back to an exit.

What are the general cautions for operating the BROAN ALLURE QS1 range hood?

1. For indoor use only.

2. For general ventilating use only. Do not use to exhaust hazardous or explosive materials and vapors.

3. To avoid motor bearing damage and noisy and/or unbalanced impellers, keep drywall spray, construction dust, etc. off the power unit.

4. For best capture of cooking impurities, your BROAN ALLURE QS1 range hood should be mounted so that the top of the hood is 24-30 inches above the cooking surface.

5. Please read the specification label on the product for further information and requirements.

How do I prepare the location for installing my BROAN ALLURE QS1 range hood?

1. Determine whether the BROAN ALLURE QS1 hood will discharge vertically (3¼” x 10″ or 7″ Round), horizontally (3¼” x 10″ only) or non-ducted. For vertical or horizontal discharge, run ductwork between the hood location and a roof cap or wall cap. For best results, use a minimum number of transitions and elbows.

2. Use the diagrams in the manual for proper placement of ductwork and electrical cutout in the cabinet or wall. For a non-ducted installation, DO NOT cut a duct access hole.

3. Run house wiring between the service panel and the hood location.

How do I begin preparing the BROAN ALLURE QS1 hood for installation?

1. Remove the 7″ Round Duct Plate from the top of the hood. Set the duct plate aside with its mounting screws.

2. Remove the tape holding the Filters in place. Pull down on the filter tabs and lift the filters out. Set filters aside.

3. Remove the Damper/Duct Connector from inside the hood. Set the connector aside with its mounting screws.

4. Remove the Wiring Cover from inside the hood. The parts bag can be found underneath. Set the cover, mounting screw, and parts bag aside.

5. Remove either the top or back wiring knockout and install an approved Electrical Cable Clamp.

How do I prepare the BROAN ALLURE QS1 for a DUCTED installation?

After completing the initial preparation steps, follow these steps for a ducted installation only:

1. Remove the Light Panel, which is held in place with five (5) #8 screws. Disconnect the light assembly wire harness (white connector).

2. Remove the Air Chute, held in place with one (1) screw. Be careful not to disconnect any wires.

3. Remove the Baffle from the air chute.

4. Rotate the baffle. Re-insert the baffle into the air chute so that the baffle tabs fit all the way into the slots in the air chute. An audible “click” will be heard when fully installed. This will close off the air flow through the non-ducted slots on top of the hood.

5. Re-install the air chute, re-connect the wire harness, and replace the light panel. Be careful not to trap wires between the support fin and the light panel.

How do I complete the preparation of the BROAN ALLURE QS1 for a ducted discharge?

1. Remove the appropriate Duct Knockout(s) from the top or back of the hood.

2. For 3¼” x 10″ Ducted Discharge Only: Attach the Damper/Duct Connector over the knockout opening. Make sure the damper Pivot is nearest to the Top/Back Edge of the hood. Remove the tape from the damper flap.

3. For 7″ Round Ducted Discharge Only: Re-install the 7″ Round Duct Plate. Install a 7″ round damper (purchased separately). The damper flap must open freely in the direction of air flow (away from the range hood).

NOTE: To accommodate off-center ductwork, the Damper/Duct Connector can be installed up to 1-inch on either side of the hood center, or the 7″ Round Duct Plate can be installed up to ½” on either side of the hood center. In extreme off-center installations, one end of the duct connector may need to be trimmed to clear the electrical cable clamp.

How do I connect the electrical wiring for the BROAN ALLURE QS1?

WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock, make sure power is switched off at the service panel. Lock or tag the service panel to prevent power from being switched on accidentally.

1. Connect House Wiring (120 VAC) to the hood. Use a piece of cardboard to protect the cooktop, if necessary.

2. Connect the house black wire to the hood’s black wire, the house white wire to the hood’s white wire, and the house ground wire under the Green Ground Screw. Securely tighten the cable clamp onto the house wiring.

3. Replace the wiring cover.

How do I install the BROAN ALLURE QS1 hood after preparation and wiring?

1. Hang the hood from four (4) Mounting Screws (from the parts bag). Slide the hood towards the wall until the mounting screws are engaged in the narrow end of the four (4) Keyholes. Tighten the mounting screws securely. CAUTION: DO NOT PUSH ON THE FAN BLADE. Pushing on the blade may cause it to interfere with other hood parts.

2. Connect ductwork to the hood. Use Duct Tape to make joints secure and air tight.

3. Install two (2) PAR20, 50 W Maximum Halogen Bulbs or two (2) R16, 40 W Maximum Incandescent Bulbs. Purchase bulbs separately. CAUTION: Bulbs may be hot! Refer to bulb packaging for further information.

4. Replace filters and make sure the fan blade turns freely. Turn on power at the service panel and test for proper operation.

What is required for a non-ducted installation of the BROAN ALLURE QS1?

If your BROAN ALLURE QS1 hood is to be installed Non-Ducted, you must purchase a set of two (2) non-ducted filters from your local distributor or retailer and attach them to the aluminum mesh filters.

How do I operate the fan and light controls on my BROAN ALLURE QS1 range hood?

The controls for your BROAN ALLURE QS1 are located on the front panel:

Fan: The 3-position rocker switch on the left controls the fan. The left position is low speed, the center position is off, and the right position is high speed. An indicator light shows that the fan is on.

Light: The 3-position rocker switch on the right controls the lights. The left position is low light intensity, the center position is off, and the right position is high light intensity.

How do I clean my BROAN ALLURE QS1 range hood and its filters?

WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock, disconnect from power supply before cleaning.

Aluminum mesh filters: Clean frequently using hot water and a mild detergent. Filters are dishwasher safe. Clean all-metal filters in the dishwasher using a non-phosphate detergent. Discoloration of the filter may occur if using phosphate detergents, or as a result of local water conditions – but this will not affect filter performance. This discoloration is not covered by the warranty.

Charcoal filters: Clean filter surfaces frequently with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. DO NOT immerse filters in water or put in the dishwasher. The special “Clean Sense” feature indicates when the filter is to be replaced. The dotted lines on the indicator strip will change to solid wide lines when it is time to change the filter. The “Clean Sense” feature works best when facing toward the cooking surface.

To clean hood: Remove filters. Use a damp cloth and a mild detergent to wipe all grease-laden surfaces. Use care when cleaning the fan blade – it must not become bent or misaligned. DO NOT ALLOW WATER TO ENTER THE MOTOR. Make sure all surfaces are completely dry before re-installing filters and restoring power.

The motor is permanently lubricated. Do not oil or disassemble the motor.
