What are the general safety instructions for using the Ejoy wheelchair?
Before setting off, check that all attachments are properly fixed in place.
To avoid falls and dangerous situations, you should first practice driving your new electric wheelchair on level, unobstructed ground. An attendant is recommended in this case.
Familiarise yourself thoroughly with the braking and acceleration behaviour when driving in a straight line and into and out of curves.
Please note that the shifting of weight through body movements or loading can increase the risk of tipping over to the side, to the front or back.
The electric wheelchair must only be used to transport one person. Please respect the intended use.
When setting up or adjusting the product, be aware of the risk of body parts being pinched.
Never use the electric wheelchair under the influence of alcohol or other agents which affect your awareness or your physical and mental capacities.
It is essential that you use ramps to get over obstacles. If it should be necessary to lift the Ejoy over an obstacle, then only do this without an occupant. Only use fixed frame parts to lift the chair.
Avoid driving into obstacles without braking (furniture, steps or similar items).
The control unit must always be switched off whenever you are getting in or out of the chair.
When on roads, observe the road traffic regulations.
The lighting and reflectors on the wheelchair must always be visible to other road users.
Where possible, wear bright conspicuous clothes. You will then be seen better by other road users.
Please note that upholstery parts which are subject to sunlight will heat up and could cause skin injury when touched. You should therefore cover these parts or protect the wheelchair from direct sunlight.
The seating upholstery and pads’ materials meet the flammability resistance requirements in accordance with EN 1021-2 / ISO 8191-2. Therefore do not expose the upholstery or pads or any other parts to ignition sources – such as, for example, cigarettes.
Always put the seat and backrest into an upright position when you are driving the wheelchair.
Use on slopes is only permitted when the seat and backrest are in an upright position.
At low ambient temperatures, the metal parts of the wheelchair can get very cold, so please avoid skin contact if this is the case.
If you should notice your electric wheelchair behaving unusually or if it is damaged, stop using it and contact your dealer.
Warning! Use on slopes is only permitted when the seat and backrest are in an upright position.
Attention: risk of falling! Always drive up to the kerb head on. Driving up at an angle can lead to accidents.
Warning! Always put the seat and backrest into an upright position when you are driving the wheelchair.
How should incidents be reported?
If you, as the operator, user or their relatives, detect possible defects or functional limitations, please contact an authorised dealer immediately. Operators, users or their relatives should inform the dealer who supplied the product of any suspected serious incidents which directly or indirectly have had or could have one of the following and by which they are affected:
– the death of a patient, user or other person,
– the temporary or permanent serious deterioration of the health of the state of health of a patient, user or other persons,
– a serious risk to public health.
You can also report this to the competent higher federal authority.
Can the Ejoy wheelchair be used as a seat in a vehicle?
No, the Ejoy is not designed to be used as a vehicle seat. Under no circumstances may it be used as such. It does not fulfil the requirements in compliance with ISO 7176-19. Violation can cause the most serious injuries resulting in death in the case of an accident.
Check the symbols on the type plate: ‘Wheelchair is not designed for use as a seat in a vehicle for transporting individuals with impaired mobility’ or ‘Wheelchair is designed for use as a seat in a vehicle for transporting individuals with impaired mobility’.
What should I know about using the wheelchair on public roads?
The wheelchair is designed for indoor and outdoor use. Keep in mind that you are using public roads and therefore have to observe all road traffic regulations.
Do not endanger other road users through inconsiderate driving, especially on pavements.
When driving, respect other road users.
What about electromagnetic interference (EMC)?
Despite compliance with all applicable EMC Directives and standards, it is possible that the electric wheelchair may interfere with other electrical devices (e.g. mobile phones, alarm systems) or that its driving performance will be reduced by those devices.
If you notice such behaviour, switch off either the third-party device or your electric wheelchair and move it beyond the range of interference.
It is possible that your electric wheelchair will interfere with other devices which emit electromagnetic fields and that they will interfere with your chair.
How do the brakes work on the Ejoy wheelchair?
Operating brake: When in motion the motors act as an operating brake. To brake the wheelchair slowly, move the steering and driving lever (joystick) slowly back to the neutral position (initial position). For more forceful braking, release the steering and driving lever. The braking distance is significantly longer on slopes than on flat ground. Bear this in mind when going down ramps and brake in time. Make sure that you brake your electric wheelchair in good time, particularly when approaching people or when driving downhill.
Parking brake/parking: Switch the wheelchair off using the on/off switch. If the drives are engaged, you cannot push or move the electric wheelchair.
Emergency brake: Press the on/off switch to initiate an emergency stop when driving. This will lead to intense deceleration. This can lead to injuries and is therefore only to be used in emergencies. An emergency stop must only be carried out in an emergency as it can lead to injuries.
What is the intended purpose and maximum payload of the Ejoy?
The Ejoy electric wheelchair is designed for indoor and outdoor use for adults who cannot walk. It is able to handle longer distances and suspension is provided to overcome small obstacles. It is classified as Category B in accordance with DIN EN 12184.
The maximum payload is:
Ejoy RD/FD/MD: 140 kg

What affects the range of the Ejoy wheelchair?
The range of the Ejoy is up to 35 km. The achievable range depends on different factors:
• condition of the road surface
• way of driving
• battery condition and charge
• payload weight
• ambient temperature
• use of accessories
The stated range was calculated under test conditions: batteries as new and fully charged, ambient temperature of 21 °C, max. user weight, level firm ground, constant driving speed, deactivated lighting system.
The following factors will mean that the range is severely reduced:
• poor battery charge level
• low ambient temperature (below 10 °C)
• frequent starting and braking
• climbing hills
• driving on ground which is not firm (field or forest paths)
• incorrect or low tyre pressure
• electromagnetic fields
With a combination of several factors, the range may be reduced by up to 50%.
Warning: Never use your electric wheelchair with empty or almost empty batteries. You may endanger yourself and others by stopping unexpectedly.

How do I disinfect the wheelchair?
1. Thoroughly clean the wheelchair before disinfection.
2. The wheelchair can be disinfected with a household disinfectant. Use approved spray disinfectants or alcohol-based wipe-on disinfectants.
3. In case of multiple product users, a commercial disinfectant is prescribed. Use only wipe-on disinfectants approved by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the Association for Applied Hygiene (Verbund für Angewandte Hygiene e.V.) (e.g., Bacillol AF or Kohrsolin FF); follow manufacturer’s recommendations for exposure time and concentration.
4. Caution: Damaged upholstery parts cannot be sufficiently disinfected and should be replaced.
5. Under certain circumstances, surfaces can be affected by disinfectants, potentially restricting functionality long-term.
Attention: Danger of infection! If there are several users, the wheelchair must be cleaned after each use.
What checks should I perform before each use?
Checking the brakes:
• Start up carefully and let the driving lever return to neutral. The wheelchair must halt as usual.
• When stationary, the electromechanical brake must lock with an audible click. If defects are noticed, notify your dealer immediately and discontinue use.
• Check if you can push the wheelchair when it’s switched off. If you can, the electromagnetic brake is defective. Stop using the wheelchair and contact your dealer immediately.
Checking the lighting, indicators and horn:
• Check that the horn works properly.
• Check that the lights and indicators function when their respective buttons are pressed.
• If there is no response, notify your dealer immediately and take the wheelchair out of use.
Checking the tyres:
• Check tyres are intact.
• Check tread depth (should be at least 1 mm).
• Check air pressure matches values in technical data (Chapter 6).
• Contact your dealer if tyres are defective or worn.
What should I know about the batteries?
The wheelchair uses maintenance-free batteries; you don’t need to check the liquid level.
If the wheelchair is unused for a longer period, connect the charger every 4 weeks to prevent deep discharge damage.
Check the battery status display before each trip. If only red LEDs show, avoid long journeys and charge immediately.
Connect the charger after every trip if possible.
Warning: Never use your electric wheelchair with empty or almost empty batteries. You could stop unexpectedly, endangering yourself and others.
How do I charge the batteries?
• Only use an approved charger (see technical data) and follow its operating instructions.
• Charge between 0° and 40° C.
• Before first use, fully charge the batteries. This can take up to 12 hours. Maximum capacity (AGM or Gel) is reached after several (up to 10) full charge cycles. Avoid running batteries completely flat during this time.
• Procedure:
1. First switch off the wheelchair.
2. Check the power supply is 230 V.
3. Connect the charger to the charging socket (located on the side below the control unit) and then to the mains socket.
4. Read the charge status on the charger, not the wheelchair display.
5. Once charging is complete, disconnect the mains plug, then disconnect the charger from the wheelchair.
• Charge monthly if not in use to prevent deep discharge.
• Store batteries upright, dry, and frost-free.
• Replace batteries if range decreases noticeably even when fully charged.
• You can interrupt charging if needed, but always charge to 100% when possible for maximum range.
• Do not charge frozen batteries.
• If the low battery warning tone persists despite full charging, acknowledge it by: (with charger connected and on) switch wheelchair on, then off again after a few seconds.
How do I replace the batteries?
Warning! This work should only be carried out by experts. There is danger of fatal injury! Be extremely careful, avoid metal tools touching terminals, follow manufacturer’s instructions.
1. Ensure the wheelchair is switched off.
2. Only use approved batteries (see Chapter 6).
3. Loosen the rear part of the battery compartment cover by pulling it back.
4. Push the cover below the seat upwards, then pull it backwards out of the wheelchair.
5. Remove the screw on the front of the bar.
6. Loosen the belt strap securing the batteries.
7. Disconnect the battery cables: first the red (+), then the black (-).
8. Lift the old batteries out carefully using the grab bar.
9. Lift the new batteries into the designated space.
10. Connect the contacts, observing correct colour coding: first the black (-), then the red (+).
11. Secure the batteries with the belt strap.
12. Push the battery compartment back into its initial position until it clicks automatically.
13. Fix the screw back onto the grab bar.
14. Put the battery cover back on.
Important: Dispose of old batteries properly. Do not dispose of with household waste. The dealer will take back old batteries when you buy new ones.
What types of fuses are used and how do I check them?
The power circuit is protected by 2 types of fuse:
• Overload protection (A): Triggered by overload. Wait for the motor system to cool down, then press the reset button back down. Ensure the wheelchair is not overloaded before continuing.
• Safety fuses (B): Provide further protection. If the wheelchair doesn’t work after resetting the overload protection, check these fuses.
– To check/replace: Remove the protective cap of the fuse.
Before continuing to drive after checking fuses, ensure the wheelchair is not overloaded. Ask your dealer to establish the cause if unsure.
What maintenance is required?
Typical wear parts are brakes and tyres. Contact your dealer for spare parts.
We recommend taking your wheelchair to your dealer for inspection at least once a year.
If there are faults or defects, take the wheelchair to your dealer immediately for repair.
Check your wheelchair regularly in accordance with the maintenance plan. (A maintenance plan and schedule are provided on request to the specialist trade).
Maintenance must be carried out according to the Bischoff & Bischoff maintenance schedule by authorised partners.
The wheelchair must be checked in accordance with the maintenance plan and be in proper technical condition.
Who should perform repairs?
Repairs and servicing work must only be carried out by authorised partners (medical supply stores or dealers). Contact Customer Service to find a partner in your area.
How should I park the wheelchair?
Do not park your power wheelchair in damp or misty conditions, as this will lead to mould growth and rapid deterioration of the upholstery.
Also make sure that the drives are engaged (parking brake applied).
How should I store or ship the wheelchair?
If the wheelchair is to be stored or shipped:
1. Remove all loose parts which are not fixed (except drive wheels).
2. Pack these parts individually in an appropriate cardboard box.
3. The power circuit must be open when stored for long periods (disconnect batteries if applicable or ensure main switch off).
4. Package the individually packed parts together in a larger cardboard box. (Keeping the original packaging is recommended).
5. For storage, observe the temperature and humidity conditions in the technical data.
6. The storage location should be as dry as possible and not exposed to direct sunlight to avoid mould growth and damage to upholstery.
Can the wheelchair be used by others (re-usage)?
Yes, the wheelchair is designed for re-usage.
Before passing it to another user:
1. It must be serviced by a dealer.
2. It must be hygienically cleaned.
3. Remember to hand over this user manual and the address of your dealer to the new user.
How should I dispose of the wheelchair?
If your wheelchair is no longer in use and needs to be disposed of, contact your dealer.
If you wish to dispose of the product yourself, contact local recycling companies to enquire about the regulations that apply to your place of residence. Do not dispose of with household waste.
