ASKO D5424XL W (01) PDF SUMMARY:

What should I do before using the dishwasher for the first time?

The PDF recommends checking the water hardness with your local water utility to determine how much detergent and rinse aid to use. The PDF also recommends topping up the rinse aid compartment before using the dishwasher for the first time.

How do I top up the rinse aid compartment?

Open the rinse aid compartment lid. Carefully add rinse aid until it reaches the level marked “max”. Wipe up any spilled rinse aid around the compartment and close the lid firmly.

How do I select the rinse aid dosage?

The rinse aid dispensing can be set from (Off) to (High dose). Refer to the “Settings” section of the PDF for instructions on how to set the rinse aid dosage.

When should I increase the rinse aid dosage?

Increase the rinse aid dosage if the dishes have water marks.

When should I reduce the rinse aid dosage?

Reduce the rinse aid dosage if the dishes have a sticky white/blue film, if the dishes are streaked, or if there is heavy foaming. If you have very soft water, the rinse aid can be diluted 50:50 with water.

What does it mean when the rinse aid indicator symbol lights up on the display?

The rinse aid indicator symbol lights up on the display when the rinse aid needs to be topped up. It may take a while for the symbol to go out after topping up.

How can I save energy when using the dishwasher?

Run programs only when the dishwasher is fully loaded. Use the Rinse & Hold program to rinse dishes if there are any unpleasant odors while waiting for a full load. Select a program with a lower temperature if dishes are only lightly soiled. Select a program with Short dry, and leave the door slightly open once the program is finished for better drying results. Connect to cold water if you use oil or electricity to heat your home. Connect to hot water if you use district heating, solar power, or geothermal power to heat your home.

What should I do with large food particles before loading the dishwasher?

Scrape off large food particles; do not rinse under running water.

What kind of detergent should I choose?

Choose a green detergent and read the environmental declaration on the packaging.

How should I load fragile dishes?

Position items so that they do not touch each other during the wash. Use the lowest possible wash temperature and the shortest possible program. Select Short dry. Antique and very fragile items should not be washed in a dishwasher.

What should I know about washing glass in the dishwasher?

Glass washed in a dishwasher at high temperatures can gradually develop a gray film that cannot be removed. Wash fragile glasses at a low temperature and with a small amount of detergent.

What should I know about washing silver in the dishwasher?

Silver and stainless steel items should not come into contact, as the silver can become discolored.

What should I know about washing cutlery with glued handles in the dishwasher?

Some types of glue are not dishwasher safe, and in such cases, the handles may loosen.

What should I know about washing wooden items in the dishwasher?

Wooden items should only be washed in a dishwasher if marked dishwasher safe.

What should I know about washing aluminum in the dishwasher?

Aluminum can lose its shine if washed in a dishwasher. However, good quality aluminum pans can be washed in a dishwasher, even if some of the shine will be lost.

What should I know about washing plastic items in the dishwasher?

Avoid washing plastic items that cannot withstand high temperatures.

How should I load the upper basket of the dishwasher?

Place glasses, cups, bowls, side plates, and saucers in the upper basket. Wine glasses are placed on the wine glass shelf and knives are placed in the knife stand on the right (if equipped). Ensure all dirty surfaces face in and down.

How should I load the lower basket of the dishwasher?

Place plates, side plates, serving dishes, pots, and cutlery (in the cutlery basket) in the lower basket. Place pots and pans in the rear left of the lower basket to best utilize dishwashing performance from the rear spray nozzle (Power Zone™ Pot & Pans).

When should I lower the fold-down plate supports?

Lower the fold-down plate supports when washing pots.

When should I use the forward mount for plate support?

Use the forward mount for plates with a diameter greater than 9 3/4" (25 cm).

How should I load the cutlery basket?

Place cutlery with the handles facing down, except for knives, and spread them out as much as possible. Ensure that spoons do not stack inside each other. The cutlery basket is best placed in the middle at the front of the lower basket to best utilize dishwashing performance from the unique spray nozzle (Power Zone™ Cutlery). Do not place cutlery made of different materials, such as silver and stainless steel, in the same place (risk of discoloration).

How should I load knives and other pointed items?

Knives and other pointed items must be placed with the points down in the cutlery basket or horizontally in other baskets.

What is the fold-down section in the cutlery basket for?

The fold-down section in the middle of the cutlery basket is for small items or small shafts, such as electric whisk attachments.

Where do I add detergent?

Add detergent to the prewash detergent compartment and the main wash detergent compartment.

What type of detergent should I use?

Use only unscented, granular automatic dishwashing detergent. Do not use detergent that has been wet and is clumped. Check the expiration date on the container.

How much detergent should I use?

The amount of detergent needed can vary due to differences in water hardness. The harder the water, the more detergent you may need. Refer to the chart below for recommended detergent amounts based on water hardness. Adjust the amount of detergent you use by small amounts until you find the correct amount. If you have extremely hard water (12+ grains), detergent alone may not be enough, and you may need to use a water softener.

What should I do if I have hard water?

In areas with hard water (9+ grains), you may need to wash at lower temperatures to prevent hard water deposits from forming in the tank and wash system. If a white or gray film develops on the dishes or the machine, run the Normal wash program with high temperature and two tablespoons of citric acid or commercially available dishwasher cleaner in the detergent compartment (with no dishes in the machine).

Should I add prewash detergent for the Quick wash program?

The PDF recommends that you do not add prewash detergent for the Quick wash program.

What should I do if I use a dishwashing detergent with a rinse aid additive?

If you use a dishwashing detergent with a rinse aid additive, you should not fill the rinse aid dispenser, as this could cause a film on your dishes.

What are the recommended detergent amounts based on water hardness?

For soft water (0-3 grains per gallon), use 1 teaspoon of prewash detergent and 1 to 1-1/2 tablespoons of main wash detergent. For medium water (4-8 grains per gallon), use 1 teaspoon of prewash detergent and 1 to 2 tablespoons of main wash detergent. For hard water (9+ grains), use 1 teaspoon of prewash detergent and 2 to 3 tablespoons of main wash detergent.

What should I know about using dishwasher tablets?

If the tablet is difficult to close the dispenser lid, halve the tablet. There is a risk that the detergent will not be released properly if the lid is tight and cannot open correctly. Dishwasher tablets are not recommended for short programs (less than 75 minutes). Use powder or liquid dishwasher detergent instead.

What should I know about using 3-in-1/All-in-one detergent?

Read the directions for these products carefully. If anything is unclear, contact the detergent manufacturer.

How do I select a program?

Press the Program selector one or more times until the desired program symbol lights.

What is the Heavy wash program for?

The Heavy wash program is for very dirty dishes, such as pans, casserole dishes, and oven dishes. You can add other dishes that can withstand a Heavy wash to fill out the load.

What is the Sanitation wash program for?

The Sanitation wash program has a high final rinse temperature for a good drying result and germ treatment. Do not put in dishware that cannot withstand high wash or rinse temperatures.

What is the Normal wash program for?

The Normal wash program is used to wash normally soiled dishes, such as plates, serving dishes, cups, glasses, and so on.

What is the Eco wash program for?

The Eco wash program is used when you want to save energy, for normally soiled dishes.

What is the Quick wash program for?

The Quick wash program is used for glasses and porcelain that is lightly soiled, such as coffee cups.

What is the Rinse & Hold program for?

The Rinse & Hold program is used to rinse dishes while you wait for the dishwasher to become fully loaded.

How do I select options?

To select an option, press one of the option buttons. The field next to the button lights when the option is activated. The available options depend on the selected program. Once you have started the program, the options you selected are saved for the next time you use the same program.

What does the High temperature option do?

The High temperature option uses a higher temperature for the main wash for improved dishwashing results. You can vary the temperature as shown in the following list:

  • Sanitation wash: 130 °F (55 °C) / 160 °F (70 °C)
  • Normal wash: 130 °F (55 °C) / 150 °F (65 °C)
  • Heavy wash: 140 °F (60 °C) / 150 °F (65 °C)
  • Quick wash: 85 °F (30 °C) / 140 °F (60 °C)
  • Eco wash: 120 °F (50 °C) / 140 °F (60 °C)

What does the Long dry option do?

The Long dry option uses a higher temperature in the final rinse and a longer drying phase to improve the drying result. This causes a slight increase in energy consumption. If you want a program with Short dry, press the button so that the field next to the button turns off.

How do I start the dishwasher?

Press and hold Start until the display flashes three times with the remaining time. This indicates that the program has started. Close the door properly, otherwise the dishwasher will not start. The display indicates if the door is open. If the machine does not start within 2 minutes of the last button press, the display returns to showing the last program run.

What does the display indicate?

Once you have selected a program and options, the display indicates how long the program took the last time it was used. Once you have started the dishwasher, the display indicates how much program time remains. The remaining time is updated after the water for the final rinse has been heated. The remaining time is displayed, e.g., 1:15, meaning that 1 minute 15 seconds of the program remains. During the first run of each program, the remaining time displayed can be slightly misleading, as the dishwasher is estimating the time. When you run the program a second time, the dishwasher will calculate the remaining time based on the previous duration of the program.

How do I stop or change a program?

If you want to change programs after starting the dishwasher, open the door then press and hold Stop for five seconds. Add more detergent if the lid of the detergent dispenser has opened. Then choose a new program, press Start, and close the door.

What happens if I open the door to add more dishes?

Open the door. The dishwasher stops automatically. Add the dishes, close the door, and the dishwasher resumes the program.

What happens if the dishwasher is turned off using the main power switch or due to a power failure?

If the program was not finished, the interrupted program resumes when power is restored. During drying, the program is interrupted if the power is cut or the door is open for more than 2 minutes.

What happens when the program has finished?

Once the program has finished, “End” appears on the display. A buzzer also sounds at the end of the program. Once the dishwasher has finished, it uses only standby power. Turn off the dishwasher using the main power switch if you want to completely cut the power. Turn off the water supply valve after each use.

How do I open the settings menu?

Turn off the dishwasher using the main power switch. Wait about five seconds. Then press the main power switch again. Wait until the numbers appear in the right-hand display before continuing to the next step. Within five seconds, press and hold the Program selector (wait for the audible signal confirming the button press) and then immediately press the Long dry button without releasing the Program selector. Keep the buttons pressed until the symbols for the Heavy wash and Rinse & Hold programs start to flash.

What settings can I adjust?

You can adjust the following settings: Child lock, Buzzer volume, Operation volume, LCD contrast, and Rinse aid dosage.

How do I activate the child lock (Kid Safe™)?

Activate the child lock (button lock) to prevent children from starting the dishwasher. Press the High temperature and Long dry buttons simultaneously to temporarily deactivate the button lock when you want to start the dishwasher. The button lock is automatically reactivated after 2 minutes.

How do I adjust the buzzer volume?

The dishwasher uses a buzzer to indicate when a program is finished or when a fault has occurred. You can adjust the buzzer volume to (Off), (Low), or (High). Press Start to save the setting value and continue to the next setting.

What is the operation volume setting?

This sound is used to confirm each button press. You can adjust the operation volume to (Off), (Low), or (High). Press Start to save the setting value and continue to the next setting.

How do I adjust the LCD contrast?

You can adjust the contrast of the display to (Low) or (High). Press Start to save the setting value and continue to the next setting.

How do I adjust the rinse aid dosage setting?

You can adjust the rinse aid dosage to (Off), (Low dosage), or (High dosage). Press Start to exit the settings menu.

Check that the edges seal properly when replacing the fine filter. Lock the filter in place by turning the handle clockwise to the stop position. The handle should point straight out from the dishwasher.

What should you NOT do when using the dishwasher filters?

The dishwasher must not be used without the filters in place! Dishwashing results may be affected if the coarse filter is incorrectly fitted.

How do you access and clean the drain pump?

Cut the power to the dishwasher by unplugging the unit from the power outlet. Remove the coarse filter and pipe section. Remove the small yellow drain pump access cover at the left of the bottom drain. By inserting your finger into the hole, you can turn the pump blades to release anything blocking the pump. Reinstall the access cover and filters. Plug the machine in again.

What should you do if the dishwasher still does not start and a whirring sound is heard after cleaning the drain pump?

If the dishwasher still does not start and a whirring sound is heard, the overflow protection has been triggered. Shut off the water. Unplug the unit from the power outlet. Call the Customer Care Center.

What should you remember when reinstalling the drain pump access cover?

How do you clean the upper spray arm?

Loosen the upper spray arm in the same manner as the lower spray arm and clean it.

How should you clean the door?

When cleaning the edge around the door, use only a slightly damp cloth (with a little cleaner if necessary).

What should you NOT do when cleaning the door?

Do not use a spray bottle or the like around the door lock. This is to ensure that water does not penetrate the door catch and come into contact with the electrical components.

How do you remove limescale deposits from the dishwasher?

Run the Normal wash program with high temperature and two tablespoons of citric acid or commercially available dishwasher cleaner in the detergent compartment (with no dishes in the machine).

How should you clean the front panel touch buttons?

Keep the touch buttons clean and free from grease. Wipe them clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Never use cleaners – they can scratch the surface. Use the main power switch to turn off the dishwasher before cleaning the touch buttons to avoid activating any buttons unintentionally.
