The tools required for installing the ALFRED DB2S lock are:

For Lock Installation:

#2 Phillips screwdriver

For Door Prep (if necessary):

1. 1″ (25 mm) boring bit

2. Chisel and Hammer

To prepare your ALFRED DB2S lock for installation, you need to unpack the lock and perform the following checks:

A. Inside escutcheon: Confirm your door handing direction and set the handing switch accordingly.

B. Latch Bolt: Confirm the backset measurement and adjust if necessary.

The handing switch must be set in the direction the latch bolt slides when you are looking at the door from the inside. For example, if your latch bolt extends out on the left side of your door when you are standing inside and looking at the door, then the handing switch should be set to the “L” position.

The ALFRED DB2S latch bolt ships with the backset in the 2-3/8″ position. If you need to change it to the 2-3/4″ position, first ensure the bolt is in the retracted (unlocked) position. Then, turn the bolt case and pull it to extend it to the 2-3/4″ backset position.

Step 1: Temporarily insert the latch bolt into the door.

When inserting the latch bolt, make sure that the arrow on the tail end is pointing upwards. If the latch bolt sits properly and can be inserted all the way, you can skip to Step 3 (testing the operation). If it cannot be inserted all the way, you need to extend the latch hole as described in the next step.

If the latch bolt cannot be inserted fully, you must extend the latch hole. Use a 1″ (25 mm) boring bit to extend the hole to the correct depth based on your door’s backset:

For a 2-3/8″ backset, the hole depth should be 3-7/16″.

For a 2-3/4″ backset, the hole depth should be 3-13/16″.

After extending the hole, insert the latch bolt again to verify that it fits correctly.

Use a screwdriver to extend and retract the bolt to check its operation. If the bolt operates smoothly, you can proceed with the installation. If it does not rotate smoothly, it may be because the face bore hole is too small.

If the latch bolt does not rotate smoothly, the face bore hole may be too small. To fix this, use a chisel to carve out a small channel at the top of the hole to allow for smooth rotation. After chiseling the channel, test the latch bolt operation again with a screwdriver to ensure it moves smoothly.

The final step is to remove the firecap from the front panel of the lock. Once the firecap is removed, you are ready to install the latch bolt and the ALFRED DB2S lock on your door by following the main “DB2S Installation guide”.
