Always read and save all safety warnings and instructions. Failure to do so may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.

1. Operating a vehicle indoors can be fatal due to carbon monoxide in engine exhaust. NEVER operate a vehicle inside a home or garage, even with doors and windows open. Only use it OUTSIDE and far away from windows, doors, and vents.

2. Individuals with pacemakers should consult their physician(s) before use. Electromagnetic fields near a running engine’s coil, spark plug cables, or distributor can cause pacemaker interference or failure.

3. Keep clothing, hair, hands, tools, and test equipment away from all moving or hot engine parts.

4. Ensure the transmission is in PARK (for automatic) or NEUTRAL (for manual) and that the parking brake is engaged.

5. Place blocks in front of and behind the drive wheels.

6. Before inspecting, maintaining, or repairing a vehicle, read its service manual.

7. Always wear ANSI-approved safety goggles.

8. Never leave the vehicle unattended while tests are running.

9. Keep a fire extinguisher suitable for gasoline/chemical/electrical fires nearby.

10. Do not connect or disconnect any test equipment while the ignition is on or the engine is running.

11. This product is not a toy. Keep it out of reach of children.

12. Keep the ZURICH ZR4S dry, clean, and free from oil, water, or grease. Use a mild detergent on a clean cloth to clean the outside when necessary.

13. The operator must understand that common sense and caution are factors that cannot be built into this product and must be supplied by the operator.

The controls and indicators on the ZURICH ZR4S are as follows:

1. ERASE button: Erases Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and “Freeze Frame” data from the vehicle’s computer and resets Monitor status.

2. DTC/FF button: Displays the DTC View screen and/or scrolls the LCD display to view DTCs and Freeze Frame data.

3. ENTER button: When in Menu mode, it confirms the selected option or value.

4. DOWN button: In MENU mode, it scrolls down through menu options. When LINKED to a vehicle, it scrolls down through the current display screen to show additional data.

5. GREEN LED: Indicates that all engine systems are running normally. All vehicle Monitors are active and have performed their diagnostic testing, and no DTCs are present.

6. YELLOW LED: Indicates a possible problem. A “Pending” DTC is present, and/or some of the vehicle’s emission monitors have not completed their diagnostic testing.

7. RED LED: Indicates a problem in one or more of the vehicle’s systems. It shows that DTC(s) are present, which are also displayed on the LCD. In this case, the Malfunction Indicator (“Check Engine”) lamp on the instrument panel will be lit.

8. Display: The LCD screen that shows test results, tool functions, and Monitor status information.

9. CABLE: Connects the ZURICH ZR4S to the vehicle’s Data Link Connector (DLC).

The ZURICH ZR4S display provides various pieces of information through its fields and icons:

1. I/M MONITOR STATUS field: The area at the top of the display showing monitor status.

2. Monitor icons: Indicate which Monitors are supported by the vehicle and their status. A solid green icon means the Monitor has completed its diagnostic testing. A flashing red icon means the vehicle supports the Monitor, but it has not yet run its diagnostic testing.

3. Vehicle icon: When visible, it indicates the scan tool is powered by the vehicle’s DLC connector.

4. Link icon: When visible, it indicates the scan tool is communicating with the vehicle’s computer.

5. Computer icon: When visible, it indicates the scan tool is linked to a personal computer.

6. DTC Display Area: Displays the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) number. The color of the code indicates its status:

– RED: A STORED or PERMANENT DTC.

– YELLOW: A PENDING DTC.

– GREEN: A “No DTCs are presently stored” message is shown.

7. Code Number Sequence: A sequence number (starting with “1”) assigned to each DTC. Code number “1” is the highest priority code and the one for which Freeze Frame data has been stored.

8. Code Enumerator: Indicates the total number of codes retrieved from the vehicle’s computer.

9. Test Data Display Area: Displays DTC definitions, Freeze Frame data, and other test information messages.

10. SYSTEM icon (MIL icon): Indicates the system with which the code is associated.

11. FREEZE FRAME icon: Indicates that Freeze Frame data is stored for the priority code (Code #1).

12. Code type: Indicates the type of code being displayed (e.g., Generic Stored, Generic Pending, Generic permanent).

13. Severity: Indicates the severity level for the priority code (code #1):

– 1: Service should be scheduled when convenient. No immediate threat.

– 2: Repair immediately if drivability issues are present. Threat to essential system components if not repaired soon.

– 3: Stop and repair the vehicle immediately to prevent interrelated failures. Harmful and damaging to essential system components.

14. Bluetooth icon: A solid blue icon indicates an active Bluetooth connection. A solid grey icon indicates Bluetooth is not connected.

15. WiFi icon: When ON, indicates the scan tool is linked to a WiFi network. When OFF, it indicates no WiFi connection.

The first time you connect the ZURICH ZR4S to a vehicle, you must select the display language and unit of measurement. Follow these steps:

1. Select the desired display language (English, French, or Spanish), then press ENTER.

2. The “Select Unit” screen will display. Select the desired unit of measurement (USA or Metric), then press ENTER.

After these initial selections are made, they can be changed later in the “Additional Functions” menu.

Retrieving DTCs is a key part of vehicle diagnostics. Follow this procedure carefully:

1. Turn the vehicle’s ignition off.

2. Locate the vehicle’s 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC), which is usually under the dashboard on the driver’s side. Some DLCs may have a plastic cover that needs to be removed.

3. Connect the ZURICH ZR4S cable to the vehicle’s DLC. The connector is keyed and will only fit one way. If you have trouble, rotate the connector 180° and try again.

4. Turn the ignition on, but DO NOT start the engine.

5. The ZURICH ZR4S will automatically turn ON. If it doesn’t, there may be no power at the DLC. Check the vehicle’s fuse panel for burned-out fuses. If replacing fuses doesn’t work, consult your vehicle’s repair manual to identify the proper computer (PCM) fuse/circuit.

6. The scan tool will automatically check the vehicle’s computer to establish a communication link.

7. If the ZURICH ZR4S can decode the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a “Confirm Vehicle” screen will appear. If the information is correct, select Yes and press ENTER to proceed. If it’s incorrect or you wish to select manually, choose No and press ENTER.

8. If you selected No or the tool could not decode the VIN, the “Select Make” screen appears. Select your vehicle’s make from the list and press ENTER to continue.

9. After approximately 10-60 seconds, the ZURICH ZR4S will retrieve and display any DTCs, Monitor Status, and Freeze Frame Data from the vehicle’s computer. If no codes are present, a message will indicate that.

If the ZURICH ZR4S displays a “Communication Error” message, follow these steps:

– Ensure your vehicle is OBD2 compliant.

– Verify the cable connection at the DLC is secure.

– Verify the vehicle’s ignition is ON.

– Turn the ignition OFF, wait 5 seconds, then turn it back ON to reset the computer.

– Press ENTER to try again.

If the scan tool still cannot link after three attempts, it will display a “Contact Technical Support” message. In this case:

– Press and hold ENTER to return to the Main Menu.

– Turn the ignition off and disconnect the ZURICH ZR4S.

The LEDs and the display on the ZURICH ZR4S provide a visual summary of the vehicle’s system status:

Green LED: Indicates all engine systems are “OK” and operating normally. All supported monitors have completed their diagnostic testing, and no trouble codes are present. All Monitor icons on the display will be solid.

Yellow LED: Indicates one of two possible conditions:

– A PENDING CODE IS PRESENT: The display will show a numeric code with the word PENDING. This indicates a potential issue that needs to be confirmed.

– MONITOR NOT RUN STATUS: The display shows no DTCs, but the yellow LED is lit. This means some of the vehicle’s emission monitors have not yet completed their diagnostic testing. Monitor icons that are blinking have not run; icons that are solid have run.

Red LED: Indicates a problem with one or more of the vehicle’s systems. DTCs are present and will be shown on the LCD display. The “Check Engine” light on the vehicle’s instrument panel will also be on.

If more than one Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) was retrieved, or if you want to view Freeze Frame data, use the DTC/FF button.

– Each time you press and release the DTC/FF button, the ZURICH ZR4S will scroll and display the next DTC in sequence until all stored codes have been shown.

– Freeze Frame data, if available, will display after DTC #1 (the priority code). Freeze Frame is a snapshot of engine conditions (like engine speed, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, etc.) at the time an emissions-related fault occurred.

– When the last retrieved DTC has been displayed, pressing the DTC/FF button again will return the display to the first, or “Priority,” code.

Using the ERASE function on the ZURICH ZR4S will erase DTCs, “Freeze Frame” data, and manufacturer-specific enhanced data. Note that “Permanent” DTCs are NOT erased by this function. Erasing codes also resets the I/M Readiness Monitor Status for all Monitors to a “not run” condition, meaning an OBD2 Drive Cycle must be performed to set them to “DONE” again.

Important: If you plan to take the vehicle to a service center, DO NOT erase the codes, as this deletes valuable information for the technician.

To erase DTCs:

1. Connect the ZURICH ZR4S to the vehicle’s DLC and turn the ignition “On.” If not already linked, perform the Code Retrieval procedure first.

2. Wait until the codes are displayed on the screen.

3. Press and release the ERASE button. A confirmation message will appear.

4. The screen will ask “Are you sure?”. To proceed, select YES and press ENTER. To cancel, select NO and press ENTER.

5. If you chose to erase, a “One moment please…” message displays while the function is in progress.

6. If the erase is successful, a confirmation message “Erase was successful!” shows. The scan tool will then automatically relink to the vehicle’s computer after 3 seconds.

7. If the erase was not successful, an advisory message will indicate the request was sent to the computer, and the tool will relink.

To connect your ZURICH ZR4S and transfer diagnostic data, you need the tool, an Android or iOS Smart Device, and the RepairSolutions 2® app.

1. Download and install the RepairSolutions 2® app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).

2. Launch the app and log in to your account. If you don’t have one, you must register for a free account.

3. Connect the ZURICH ZR4S to your vehicle to power it on.

4. In the RepairSolutions 2 app, select ‘Wifi Tools Settings’ from the menu and then select your Code Reader from the list of available devices to begin pairing.

5. When Bluetooth pairing is complete, a confirmation screen appears. Click Continue.

6. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the ZURICH ZR4S to an available WiFi network. You can connect to the network your Smart Device is currently using or manually select another. Only 2.4GHz networks are supported. If you don’t wish to connect to WiFi, tap SKIP.

7. Once WiFi pairing is complete, a confirmation screen appears. Click Continue to view the “Setup Complete” message, then click Continue again to enter the app.

8. After connecting, retrieve the diagnostic data from your vehicle. The app will automatically display a report based on this data. If the tool is not connected to WiFi or Bluetooth, the vehicle data will not be saved.

To access the Main Menu on the ZURICH ZR4S, press and hold the ENTER button. The Main Menu allows you to perform additional tests and configure the scan tool.

The following functions are available from the Main Menu:

– Vehicle Information: Displays a menu to retrieve reference information for the vehicle, including Vehicle ID, Available Modules, and In-use Performance Tracking (IPT).

– EVAP Test: Initiates a leak test of the vehicle’s EVAP system.

– Monitor Icons: Shows the full names for the I/M MONITOR STATUS icons.

– LED Definitions: Provides descriptions of the meaning of the green, yellow, and red SYSTEM STATUS LEDs.

– Language Selection: Sets the display language to English, French, or Spanish.

– Adjust Brightness: Adjusts the brightness of the display screen.

– Audible Tone: Turns the audible tone on or off.

– Footer: Turns the navigational “footers” at the bottom of display screens on or off.

– Hotkey Legend: Shows functional descriptions for the tool’s hotkeys.

– Unit of Measurement: Sets the unit of measurement to USA or Metric.

These options are available in the “Vehicle Information” menu, accessible from the Main Menu.

Retrieving Vehicle ID Information:

The Vehicle ID function is applicable to model year 2000 and newer OBD2-compliant vehicles and can retrieve the VIN, control module ID, calibration ID(s), and Calibration Verification Number(s) (CVNs).

1. From the Main Menu, select Vehicle Information and press ENTER.

2. Select Vehicle ID and press ENTER. It may take several minutes the first time.

3. When complete, the vehicle ID information is displayed.

4. To exit, press and hold ENTER to return to the Main Menu.

Viewing Available Modules:

1. From the Main Menu, select Vehicle Information and press ENTER.

2. Select Available Modules and press ENTER.

3. A complete list of modules supported by the vehicle under test will be displayed.

4. To exit, press and hold ENTER to return to the Main Menu.

Viewing In-use Performance Tracking (IPT):

This function retrieves statistics for monitors supported by the vehicle.

1. From the Main Menu, select Vehicle Information and press ENTER.

2. Select IPT and press ENTER.

3. The IPT statistics for the vehicle will be displayed.

4. To exit, press and hold ENTER to return to the Main Menu.

The EVAP Test function on the ZURICH ZR4S signals the vehicle’s on-board computer to initiate a leak test of the EVAP system. The ZURICH ZR4S does not perform the test itself; it only sends the command.

1. From the Main Menu, select EVAP Test, then press ENTER.

2. A “One moment please…” message displays.

3. When the test has been initiated by the vehicle’s computer, a confirmation message “Test request sent.” displays.

4. Press ENTER to exit.

Note: The vehicle manufacturer determines the criteria for starting and stopping the test. Refer to your vehicle’s service repair manual for specific procedures. If the EVAP Test is not supported by your vehicle, an advisory message will be shown.

To see the full name for each Monitor icon shown in the I/M MONITOR STATUS area, follow these steps:

1. From the Main Menu, select Monitor Icons, then press ENTER.

2. The screen will display a list of the Monitor icons along with their full names (e.g., CCM – Comprehensive Component Monitor).

3. Use the DOWN button to scroll through the list if necessary.

4. When you have finished viewing, press and hold ENTER to return to the Main Menu.

To view a description of what the green, yellow, and red SYSTEM STATUS LEDs indicate, use the LED Definitions function:

1. From the Main Menu, select LED Definitions, then press ENTER.

2. The LED Definitions screen will appear, providing a description of the meanings of the LEDs.

3. When you have finished viewing, press and hold ENTER to return to the Main Menu.

1. From the Main Menu, select Language Selection, then press ENTER.

2. The Language Selection screen will display options (English, Español, Français).

3. Select the desired language, then press ENTER to save your change.

To return to the Main Menu without making changes, press and hold ENTER.

1. From the Main Menu, select Adjust Brightness, then press ENTER.

2. The Adjust Brightness screen will display.

3. Select Darker or Brighter as desired, then press ENTER.

4. Repeat as needed until the desired brightness is obtained.

To return to the Main Menu without making changes, press and hold ENTER.

The audible tone sounds each time a button is pressed when enabled.

1. From the Main Menu, select Audible Tone, then press ENTER.

2. The Audible Tone screen will display.

3. Select On or Off as desired, then press ENTER to save your change.

To return to the Main Menu without making changes, press and hold ENTER.

Navigational footers are help text that appears at the bottom of most display screens.

1. From the Main Menu, select Footer, then press ENTER.

2. The Footer Messages screen will display.

3. Select On or Off as desired, then press ENTER to save your changes.

To return to the Main Menu without making changes, press and hold ENTER.

The hotkey legend provides a functional description of the scan tool’s hotkeys.

1. From the Main Menu, select Hotkey Legend, then press ENTER.

2. The Hotkey Legends screen will display, showing a description of each hotkey’s function.

3. When you are finished viewing, press and hold ENTER to exit.

You can set the tool to display data in USA (Standard) or Metric units.

1. From the Main Menu, select Unit of Measurement, then press ENTER.

2. The Unit of Measurement screen will display.

3. Select the desired unit (Standard or Metric), then press ENTER to save your change.

To return to the Main Menu without making changes, press and hold ENTER.
