Before switching the YAMAHA S90 on, first turn down the volume of any connected audio equipment. Press the POWER switch on the rear panel. After a short time, the default display will appear. You can adjust the LCD display contrast using the contrast control knob on the top panel if necessary.

To power down the YAMAHA S90 setup, first turn down the volume for each audio device in your system. Then, switch off each device in the reverse order of the power-on procedure, starting with the audio devices and finishing with the MIDI devices.

Ensure the YAMAHA S90 is set up and powered on correctly. Press the [SEQ PLAY] button to access the CHAIN screen. Press the [SF5] (DEMO) button to call up the demo data. Use the [▲ ▼] buttons to select the song you want to hear. Press the [PLAY/STOP] or [SF5] button to begin playback. To stop or pause the demo, press the [PLAY/STOP] button. To exit Demo mode, stop playback and press any [MODE] button or the [EXIT] button.

First, enter the Voice Play mode by pressing the [VOICE] button. Next, select a Voice Bank by pressing the appropriate bank button (e.g., PRE1, PRE2, PRE3, GM, USER, or one of the PLG slots). Then, select a Voice Group by pressing the [A]-[H] buttons. Finally, select a voice number using the [1]-[16] buttons. Once selected, the YAMAHA S90 voice will be shown in large letters on the display for easy verification.

Press the [CATEGORY SEARCH] button to enable the search mode. Press one of the category buttons to select an instrument type. If the category has sub-categories, press the [F1]-[F3] buttons to select a sub-category. Use the data dial, [INC/YES], [DEC/NO], or [▲]/[▼] buttons to step through the voices in that category. You can audition voices as you scroll through them. To confirm your selection and return to the play display, press the [ENTER] button.

After selecting the voice you wish to edit, press the [F4]-[F6] buttons to access the available editing menus. Modify the desired parameters within these displays. When finished, press the [F1] button to return to the original display. If you wish to keep your changes, you must store the edited voice to User Memory using the Store operation. If you navigate to another voice or mode without storing, your edits will be lost unless you use the Edit Recall function.

After performing your edits on the YAMAHA S90, press the [STORE] button. Select the destination program number using the [INC/YES] and [DEC/NO] buttons. Press [ENTER] to confirm the operation. When the prompt appears, press [INC/YES] to complete the store procedure. Never turn off the power during this process, as indicated by the execution message on the display.

To use the YAMAHA S90 as a master keyboard, enter the Master mode and select a master number. In the Memory display, ensure the Zone Switch is set to ON. Enter the Master Edit mode. Press the [DRUM KITS] button for common zone edits or a specific [1]-[4] button for individual zone edits. Access the TRANS or NOTE displays to configure MIDI channels, Note Limits, and other zone parameters. Ensure your external tone generators are configured to respond to the MIDI channels assigned to your zones.

Please check the following:

Is the YAMAHA S90 and all connected external equipment powered on?

Are the Master Volume and other volume controls set to appropriate levels?

Is the Foot Controller fully released if connected?

Are the audio cables properly connected to the OUTPUT jacks and your amplification system?

If you are in Voice mode, check that the Voice volume and element levels are not set to zero.

If you are in Performance or Mixing mode, ensure that specific parts are not muted and have assigned voices with appropriate volumes and output settings.

Check the Note Limit and Velocity Limit parameters to ensure they are not preventing the notes from sounding.

Ensure MIDI Local Control is not set to OFF in the Utility mode unless intended for use with an external sequencer.

Press the [UTILITY] button to enter Utility mode. Press the [F1] button followed by the [SF2] button to open the KBD screen. Use the cursor buttons to select the Vel Curve parameter. Use the [INC/YES] and [DEC/NO] buttons to toggle between the available curves: norm (normal), soft, hard, wide, and fixed, depending on your preferred playing style.

Press the [CARD] button to enter Card mode. Select the Format option (usually accessed via [F1]). Enter a volume label for the card if desired. Press [ENTER] to prompt for confirmation, then press [INC/YES] to begin formatting. Be aware that this will erase all existing data on the card.

Press the [CARD] button. Press the Save button ([F2]). Select the file type you wish to save. If you are overwriting an existing file, select that file using the cursor buttons. Press [ENTER] to initiate the save, then press [INC/YES] to confirm. Wait for the completed message and do not turn off the power until it is finished.

Press the [CARD] button. Press the Load button ([F3]). Select the file type and the specific file you wish to load. If prompted, specify the destination location in the YAMAHA S90 internal memory. Press [ENTER] to load the data, then [INC/YES] to confirm. Loading data will overwrite current data in the selected memory area.

The Control Sliders [CS1]-[CS4] allow for real-time adjustment of various parameters during performance. You can switch the set of functions controlled by these sliders by pressing the [CONTROL FUNCTION] button to cycle through the available rows (e.g., Pan, Reverb, Chorus, Tempo, or Filter and EG settings). The specific function of these sliders depends on the current mode and whether you are in Voice, Performance, or Sequence Play modes.
