What are the general operating precautions for the YAMAHA NS-PA40 speaker package?
To ensure the finest performance and safety, please follow these precautions:
1. Install the speakers in a cool, dry, clean place, away from windows, heat sources, excessive vibration, dust, moisture, or cold. Avoid sources of electrical humming like transformers and motors.
2. To prevent fire or electric shock, do not expose the speakers to rain or water.
3. To prevent warping or discoloration, do not expose the speakers to direct sunlight or excessive humidity.
4. Avoid installing speakers where foreign objects may fall onto them or where they may be exposed to liquid dripping or splashing.
5. Do not place other components, burning objects (like candles), or containers of liquid on top of the speakers.
6. Do not place speakers where they are liable to be knocked over. Stable placement ensures better sound performance.
7. Placing the speakers on the same shelf or rack as a turntable can result in feedback.
8. If you notice distortion, reduce the volume on your amplifier. Never allow your amplifier to be driven into “clipping,” as this may damage the speakers.
9. When using an amplifier with a rated output power higher than the speaker’s nominal input power, be careful not to exceed the speaker’s maximum input.
10. Use a clean, dry, and soft cloth for cleaning.
11. Do not attempt to modify or fix the speakers. The cabinet should never be opened.
12. Secure placement or installation is the owner’s responsibility. Yamaha is not liable for accidents caused by improper placement or installation.
13. The front speaker is constructed with the majority of the weight in its upper portion, making it susceptible to falling over. Position the speaker on a solid, level, smooth, and low surface. Do not push, apply pressure to the side, or lean objects against it. Do not sit on or set objects on top of the speaker.
What specific precautions should be taken for the NS-SW40 subwoofer component of the YAMAHA NS-PA40?
In addition to general precautions, please observe the following for the NS-SW40 subwoofer:
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS APPLIANCE TO RAIN OR MOISTURE.
1. Do not operate this unit upside down as it may overheat.
2. Do not use excessive force on switches, controls, or connection wires. When moving the unit, disconnect the power plug and other wires first.
3. Never put a hand or a foreign object into the port on the right side of the unit. Do not hold the port when moving the unit to prevent injury or damage.
4. The unit has a built-in power amplifier and radiates heat from the rear panel. Place it away from walls, allowing at least 20 cm (8″) of space above, behind, and on both sides of the unit.
5. If using a humidifier, ensure enough space around the unit to avoid condensation, which can cause fire, damage, or electric shock.
6. Do not cover the rear panel with items like newspapers or tablecloths to avoid obstructing heat radiation.
7. Do not plug the unit into a wall outlet until all connections are complete.
8. The voltage used must match that specified on the rear panel.
9. Super-bass sound may cause a turntable to generate audio feedback. If this occurs, move the subwoofer away from the turntable.
10. The unit may be damaged if certain sounds (e.g., 20 Hz-50 Hz sine waves) are continuously output at high volume. Reduce the volume level to prevent damage.
11. If you hear distorted noise (unnatural “rapping” or “hammering”), reduce the volume. Extremely loud low-frequency sounds can damage the unit.
12. Vibration from super-bass sound may distort TV images. If so, move the unit away from the TV set.
13. When disconnecting the power cord, grasp the plug, not the cord.
14. Disconnect the AC power plug from the wall outlet if you do not plan to use the unit for a long period.
15. Install the unit near a wall outlet where the AC power plug can be reached easily.
What is included in the YAMAHA NS-PA40 speaker package?
The YAMAHA NS-PA40 package contains the following items:
• Front speaker (NS-F40) x2
• Center speaker (NS-C40) x1
• Surround speaker (NS-B40) x2
• Subwoofer (NS-SW40) x1
• Screws for the front speakers x10
• Non-skid pads (24 pcs.) for the center and surround speakers
• Subwoofer cable (5 m / 16 ft.) x1
• Speaker cable (24.5 m / 80 ft.) x1
How do I assemble the front speakers of the YAMAHA NS-PA40?
Caution Before Assembly:
• Assemble the speakers on a soft, level surface like a carpet.
• Do not grab the grilles on the front panel while handling the speakers.
• Use only the specified screws supplied in the package.
• Keep screws out of reach of children.
• Tighten screws firmly so the speaker is not shaky.
• Do not insert your fingers into any gaps between movable surfaces.
• The speaker top cannot be used alone; the top, bottom, and base must be assembled.
Note: You will need a Phillips (+) screwdriver with a shaft length of 80 mm (3-1/8″) or more.
Step 1: Attach the Base to the Bottom Section
1. Insert the three projections on the Base into the three holes on the lower end of the Bottom speaker section. Ensure the notch on the Base faces the same direction as the rear panel of the Bottom (which has a groove for the speaker cable).
2. Insert four screws from the underside of the Base. First, finger-tighten each screw alternately, then tighten them all securely. (Hint: You can use the packing polystyrene foam to support the Bottom section during this step).
Step 2: Attach the Top Section to the Bottom Section
1. Place the assembled Bottom and Base on the floor.
2. Place the Top speaker section on the Bottom section so that the Top sits slightly toward the front (by approx. 15 mm or 5/8″).
3. Slide the Top section slowly toward the rear until it stops and the rear panels of the Top and Bottom sections are aligned.
4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to securely tighten the supplied screws to attach the Bottom to the Top. Rotate approximately twelve times clockwise.
How should I position the speakers of the YAMAHA NS-PA40 for optimal performance?
Proper speaker positioning is very important as it affects the overall sound quality. Place the speakers in locations that will optimize the sound quality at your listening position.
• Front speakers (NS-F40): Place the two front speakers on the left and right sides of the TV, facing directly forward.
• Center speaker (NS-C40): Place the center speaker centrally between the front speakers, facing directly forward.
• Surround speakers (NS-B40): Place the left and right surround speakers behind your listening position, facing slightly inward.
• Subwoofer (NS-SW40): Place the subwoofer on the outside of either the right or the left front speaker. The position is not as critical as the other speakers. However, if the subwoofer is placed directly facing a wall and your listening position is in the center of the room, “standing waves” may form between the parallel walls and cancel out bass sounds. In this case, position the subwoofer at an angle to the wall or break up parallel wall surfaces by placing bookshelves, etc., along them.
Note: Placing speakers too close to a CRT-type TV may impair the picture color or cause a buzzing noise. Move the speakers at least 20 cm (8″) away from the TV. This is not an issue with LCD and plasma TVs.
How do I wall-mount the center and surround speakers of the YAMAHA NS-PA40?
The center (NS-C40) and surround (NS-B40) speakers can be wall-mounted.
Warning:
• Do not mount the speakers on thin plywood or a wall with a soft surface material, as screws may pull out.
• Do not use nails, adhesives, or unstable hardware.
• To avoid accidents from tripping over loose cables, affix the cables to the wall.
• Mount the speakers where they are unlikely to result in injury to an individual’s head.
• If you are unsure of a safe installation method, consult a professional installer or a building contractor.
Installation Steps:
1. Install screws (commercially available) into a solid wall or wall support. Use 3.5 to 4 mm (1/8″) diameter self-tapping screws. The screw head should protrude from the wall.
2. Hang each speaker by its keyhole slots onto the protruding screws.
Note: Make sure the shaft of the screw is seated in the narrow part of the keyhole slot. Otherwise, the speaker may fall.
How do I connect the speakers of the YAMAHA NS-PA40 to my amplifier?
Before making any connections, ensure the power cables for the subwoofer and other AV components are disconnected from the AC wall outlets.
1. Prepare the Speaker Cables:
1. Cut the included 24.5-meter (80 ft.) speaker cable into five suitable lengths for the two front, one center, and two surround speakers.
2. Remove about 10 mm (3/8″) of insulation from the end of each speaker cable.
3. Twist the bare wires tightly so the individual strands are not splayed.
2. Connect to the Speaker Terminals (Center and Surround):
1. Press and hold the terminal tab on the back of the speaker.
2. Insert the bare wire into the terminal opening. Make sure the terminal is gripping the bare wire, not the insulation.
3. Release the tab to securely close on the wire.
4. Gently pull on the cable to test the connection’s security.
3. Connect the Front Speaker Cables:
1. After connecting the cable to the front speaker’s terminals (located on the rear of the Bottom section), fit the cable into the groove on the rear panel of the Bottom section.
2. Pass the cable behind the four projections inside the groove to hold it in place.
3. Once the cable is fit in place down to the Base, pass the cable through the hole in the Base and then through the notch on the underside of the Base.
4. Connect to the Amplifier:
1. Connect each speaker to the appropriate speaker terminals on your amplifier (e.g., FRONT L/R, CENTER, SURROUND L/R).
2. Ensure you connect the speakers with the correct polarity: positive (+) to positive (+) and negative (-) to negative (-). If crossed, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
5. Connect the Subwoofer:
1. Connect the included subwoofer cable from the SUBWOOFER or LOW PASS output on your amplifier/receiver to the INPUT jack on the rear of the NS-SW40 subwoofer.
6. Connect Power Cables:
1. Once all speaker and subwoofer connections are complete, plug the subwoofer, amplifier, and your other AV components into suitable AC wall outlets.
How do I operate and adjust the subwoofer of the YAMAHA NS-PA40?
The rear panel of the NS-SW40 subwoofer has the following controls:
• ① Power indicator: Lights up when the POWER switch is ON.
• ② INPUT jack: For connecting the line-level subwoofer output from your amplifier.
• ③ VOLUME control: Adjusts the subwoofer’s volume. Turn clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease.
• ④ POWER switch: Set to ON to turn the subwoofer on, OFF to turn it off.
• ⑤ VOLTAGE SELECTOR (China, Korea, Asia, and General models): Ensure this is set to the correct voltage for your area (110–120/220–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz). Warning: Disconnect the power cable before changing this setting.
Setting the Subwoofer Volume for the First Time:
1. Turn on your other AV components.
2. Set the subwoofer’s VOLUME control to minimum (0).
3. Set the subwoofer’s POWER switch to ON. The power indicator will light up.
4. Play an audio source with low-frequency bass sounds. Set the amplifier’s volume to a suitable level.
5. Turn the subwoofer’s VOLUME control up gradually until you achieve a good balance between the subwoofer and the other speakers.
Note: Once the volume is set, you can leave the subwoofer’s VOLUME control as is and use your amplifier’s main volume control to adjust the entire system. If you replace the front speakers, you will need to re-adjust the subwoofer’s volume.
