What are the essential operating precautions for the YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker?

To ensure the finest performance and safety, please follow these precautions for your YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker:

1. Install the speaker in a cool, dry, clean place, away from windows, heat sources, excessive vibration, dust, moisture, or cold. Avoid sources of electrical humming like transformers and motors. To prevent fire or electric shock, do not expose the speaker to rain or water.

2. To prevent the enclosure from warping or discoloring, do not expose the speaker to direct sunlight or excessive humidity.

3. Avoid installing the speaker where foreign objects may fall onto it or where it may be exposed to liquid dripping or splashing.

4. Do not place other components, burning objects (like candles), or containers of liquid on top of the speaker.

5. Do not place the speaker where it is liable to be knocked over or struck by falling objects. Stable placement ensures better sound performance.

6. Placing the speaker on the same shelf or rack as a turntable can result in feedback.

7. If you notice distortion, reduce the volume on your amplifier. Never allow your amplifier to be driven into “clipping,” as this may damage the speaker.

8. When using an amplifier with a rated output power higher than the nominal input power of the speaker, be careful not to exceed the speaker’s maximum input.

9. Use a clean, dry, and soft cloth (like one for glasses) to clean the unit.

10. Do not attempt to modify or fix the speaker. The cabinet should never be opened for any reason.

11. Secure placement or installation is the owner’s responsibility. Yamaha is not liable for accidents caused by improper placement or installation of speakers.

What should I know about the stability of the YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker?

The speaker is constructed with the majority of its weight in its upper portion, making it susceptible to falling over if proper care isn’t taken. If the speaker tips over, it or other property may be damaged, and an individual could be injured. For safe and proper use:

• Position the speaker in a location that is solid, level, smooth, and low (with respect to the floor).

• Do not push or apply pressure to the side of the speaker when moving, or lean objects against its side.

• Do not sit on or set objects on top of the speaker.

Vibrations or jolts from earthquakes or other activities may cause the speaker to fall. For safety, using commercially-available products that increase stability (like metal fittings or chains) is recommended.

What items are included in the YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker package (model NS-PA40)?

Please make sure all parts are included in the package:

• Center speaker (NS-C40) x1

• Surround speaker (NS-B40) x2

• Subwoofer (NS-SW40) x1

• Front speaker (NS-F40) x2

• Non-skid pads (24 pcs.) x1 (for the center and surround speakers, including 12 spares)

• Screw x10 (for the front speakers)

• Subwoofer cable 5 m (16 ft.) x1

• Speaker cable 24.5 m (80 ft.) x1 (to be cut into 5 lengths)

How do I apply the non-skid pads to my YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker?

When placing your YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker on a flat surface, affix the included non-skid pads to the corners of the speaker’s underside. The pads will prevent the speaker from moving around.

Where is the best place to install my YAMAHA NS-C40 center speaker?

Before connecting the YAMAHA NS-C40, place it in its respective location. Proper positioning is very important as it affects the overall sound quality of the system.

Place the YAMAHA NS-C40 center speaker centrally between the front speakers, facing directly forward. The center speaker can be placed on a flat surface or wall-mounted.

Note: Placing the speakers too close to a CRT-type TV may impair the picture color or cause a buzzing noise. In this case, move the speakers at least 20 cm (8″) away from the TV. This is not an issue with LCD and plasma TVs.

How can I wall-mount my YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker?

You can mount the YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker on the wall by following these steps:

1. Install screws (commercially available) into a solid wall or wall support. Use 3.5 to 4 mm (1/8″) diameter self-tapping screws. The screw should protrude from the wall as shown in the diagram (6 mm or 1/4 inch head, minimum 20 mm or 3/4 inch from any edge).

2. Hang the speaker by its keyhole slots onto the protruding screws.

Note: Make sure the shaft of the screw is seated in the narrow part of the keyhole slot. Otherwise, the speaker may fall.

What warnings should I be aware of when wall-mounting the YAMAHA NS-C40?

Please observe the following warnings for safe installation:

• Do not mount the speaker on thin plywood or on a wall with a soft surface material. The screws may pull out, causing the speaker to fall and potentially lead to damage or injury.

• Do not affix the speaker to a wall using nails, adhesives, or unstable hardware. Long-term use and vibration may cause it to fall.

• To avoid accidents from tripping over loose speaker cables, affix the cables to the wall.

• Mount the speaker in a wall location where it is unlikely to result in injury to an individual’s head.

• If you are unsure of a safe way to install the speaker, consult a professional installer or a building contractor.

How do I prepare and connect the speaker cable to my YAMAHA NS-C40?

Before making any connections, ensure all power cables are disconnected from AC wall outlets.

Preparing the Speaker Cables:

1. Cut the included 24.5-meter (80 ft.) speaker cable to a suitable length for your YAMAHA NS-C40 and other speakers.

2. Remove about 10 mm (3/8″) of insulation from the end of the speaker cable.

3. Twist the bare wires tightly so the individual strands are not splayed.

Operating the Speaker Terminals:

1. Press and hold the terminal tab on the back of the YAMAHA NS-C40.

2. Insert the bare wire into the terminal. Make sure the terminal is gripping the bare wire, not the insulation.

3. Release the tab so that it closes securely on the bare wire.

4. Test the security of the connection by gently pulling on the cable.

Connection Notes:

• Make sure the bare wires do not touch each other, as this could damage the speaker or the amplifier.

• Connect the speaker to the appropriate terminals on your amplifier. Ensure correct polarity: positive (+) to positive (+) and negative (-) to negative (-). If crossed, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

• In your AV receiver’s speaker size settings, specify small (or “S”) for the YAMAHA NS-C40 speaker.
