To ensure the finest performance and prevent damage or injury, please follow these precautions for your YAMAHA NS-B40 speakers:

1. Install the speakers in a cool, dry, clean place, away from windows, heat sources, excessive vibration, dust, moisture, or cold. Avoid sources of electrical humming (e.g., transformers and motors).

2. To prevent fire or electric shock, do not expose the speakers to rain or water.

3. To prevent the enclosure from warping or discoloring, do not expose the speakers to direct sunlight or excessive humidity.

4. Avoid installing the speakers where foreign objects may fall onto them and/or where they may be exposed to liquid dripping or splashing.

5. Do not place objects like other components, burning objects (e.g., candles), or containers of liquid on top of the speakers.

6. Do not place the speakers where they are liable to be knocked over or struck by falling objects. Stable placement ensures better sound performance.

7. Placing the speakers on the same shelf or rack as a turntable can result in feedback.

8. If you notice distortion, reduce the volume on your amplifier. Never allow your amplifier to be driven into “clipping,” as this may damage the speakers.

9. When using an amplifier with a rated output power higher than the nominal input power of the speakers, be careful not to exceed the maximum input of the speakers.

10. When cleaning the unit, use a clean, dry, and soft cloth.

11. Do not attempt to modify or fix the speakers. The cabinet should never be opened for any reason. Contact qualified service personnel if needed.

12. Refer to the “Troubleshooting” section for common operating errors before concluding the speakers are faulty.

13. Secure placement or installation is the owner’s responsibility. Yamaha is not liable for accidents caused by improper placement or installation of speakers.

For safe and proper use of the YAMAHA NS-B40 speaker:

• Position the speaker in a location that is solid, level, smooth, and low (with respect to the floor).

• Do not push or apply pressure to the side of the speaker when moving, or lean objects against the side of the speaker.

• Do not sit on or set objects on top of the speaker.

Vibrations or jolts associated with earthquakes and other phenomena or activities may cause the speaker to fall over. For safety reasons, using commercially-available products that increase stability of the speaker is recommended (metal fittings or chains, etc.).

When placing your YAMAHA NS-B40 speakers on a flat surface, affix the included non-skid pads to the corners of the speaker undersides. The pads will prevent the speaker from moving around.

Speaker positioning is very important as it affects the overall sound quality. For your YAMAHA NS-B40, which are surround speakers, you should place them behind your listening position, facing slightly inward.

The YAMAHA NS-B40 speakers can be placed on a flat surface or be wall-mounted.

Note: Placing the speakers too close to a CRT-type TV may impair the picture color or cause a buzzing noise. In this case, move the speakers at least 20 cm (8″) away from the TV. This is not an issue with LCD and plasma TVs.

You can mount the YAMAHA NS-B40 speakers on the wall as follows:

1. Install screws (commercially available) into a solid wall or wall support as shown in the illustration. Use 3.5 to 4 mm (1/8″) diameter self-tapping screws. The screw should protrude about 6 mm (1/4″) from the wall.

2. Hang each speaker by its keyhole slots onto the protruding screws.

Note: Make sure the shaft of the screw is seated in the narrow part of the keyhole slot. Otherwise, the speaker may fall.

Please observe the following warnings when wall-mounting your YAMAHA NS-B40 speakers:

• Do not mount the speakers on thin plywood or on a wall with a soft surface material. Otherwise, the screws may pull out of the surface and the speakers may fall, possibly damaging them or causing personal injury.

• Do not affix the speakers to a wall using nails, adhesives, or unstable hardware. Long-term use and vibration may cause the speakers to fall.

• To avoid accidents resulting from tripping over loose speaker cables, affix the cables to the wall.

• Mount the speakers in a wall location that will be unlikely to result in injury to an individual’s head.

• If you are not sure of a safe way to install these speakers, consult a professional installer or a building contractor.

Before connecting your YAMAHA NS-B40 speakers, you will need to prepare the speaker cables.

1. Cut the included speaker cable to a suitable length for your surround speakers.

2. Remove about 10 mm (3/8″) of insulation from the end of each speaker cable.

3. Twist the bare wires tightly.

Note:

• Make the speaker cables as short as possible. Do not bundle or roll up excess cable.

• Be careful not to trip on the speaker cable, as this could cause the speaker to tip over.

• Twist the bare wires tightly so the individual strands are not splayed.

• Be careful not to injure yourself while preparing the speaker cables.

To operate the speaker terminals on your YAMAHA NS-B40:

1. Press and hold the terminal tab (Negative (-) or Positive (+)).

2. Insert the bare wire into the terminal.

3. Release the tab so that it closes securely on the bare wire, not the insulation.

4. Test the security of the connection by pulling gently on the cable.

Note:

• Make sure the bare wires do not touch each other, as this could damage the speaker or the amplifier.

• If the connections are faulty, you will hear no sound from the speakers.

First, make sure the power cables for your AV components are disconnected from the AC wall outlets before making any connections.

Connect each YAMAHA NS-B40 speaker to the appropriate speaker terminals on your amplifier (usually labeled “SURROUND”) using the cables you prepared. Make sure you connect the speakers with the correct polarity: positive (+) terminals on the speaker to positive (+) terminals on the amplifier, and negative (-) terminals to negative (-). If the polarity is crossed, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

In your AV receiver’s speaker size settings, you should specify “small” (or “S”) for the YAMAHA NS-B40 speakers.
