Ensure that your local AC mains voltage matches the voltage specified on the name plate on the bottom panel of your YAMAHA CLAVINOVA CLP-470. In some areas, a voltage selector may be provided on the rear panel of the main keyboard unit near the power cord. You must make sure that this voltage selector is set for the voltage in your area. The selector is initially set at 240V. To change the setting, use a “minus” screwdriver to rotate the selector dial so that the correct voltage appears next to the pointer on the panel.

If you notice any of the following problems with your YAMAHA CLAVINOVA CLP-470, immediately turn off the power switch and disconnect the electric plug from the outlet. Then have the device inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel.

• The power cord or plug becomes frayed or damaged.

• It emits unusual smells or smoke.

• Some object has been dropped into the instrument.

• There is a sudden loss of sound during use of the instrument.

Always follow these basic precautions to avoid the possibility of serious injury or death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages, fire, or other hazards.

Power Supply/Power Cord:

• Do not place the power cord near heat sources and do not excessively bend or damage it.

• Only use the voltage specified for the instrument.

• Use only the supplied power cord/plug.

• Periodically check and clean the electric plug.

• Do not connect the instrument to an outlet using a multiple-connector.

• When removing the plug, always hold the plug itself, not the cord.

Do Not Open:

• This instrument contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open or modify it.

Water and Fire Warning:

• Do not expose the instrument to rain or use it near water. Do not place containers with liquids on it.

• Never handle an electric plug with wet hands.

• Do not put burning items, such as candles, on the unit.

Handling and Location:

• Do not place the instrument in an unstable position.

• When moving the instrument, use two or more people.

• Before moving, remove all connected cables.

• Ensure the AC outlet is easily accessible when setting up.

• Do not insert fingers or hands in any gaps on the key cover or instrument.

• Do not rest your weight on, or place heavy objects on the instrument.

• Do not use the instrument or headphones for a long period at a high volume to prevent hearing loss.

• Do not use the instrument near a TV, radio, or other electric devices to avoid noise.

• Avoid exposing the instrument to excessive dust, vibrations, or extreme temperatures. The verified operating temperature range is 5° – 40°C (41° – 104°F).

• Do not place vinyl, plastic, or rubber objects on the instrument as this might discolor it.

• For polished finishes, be careful not to bump the surface with hard objects.

• Wipe away any condensation immediately with a soft cloth to prevent damage to wooden parts.

• When cleaning, use a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth. Do not use paint thinners, solvents, or chemical-impregnated cloths.

• For polished finishes, gently remove dust with a soft cloth. You can apply a commercial piano polisher according to its instructions.

• Periodically tighten the screws of the instrument and bench.

Saved data may be lost due to malfunction or incorrect operation. It is important to save your data to a USB storage device or an external device like a computer. To protect against data loss through media damage, it is recommended that you save your important data onto two separate USB storage devices.

To open the key cover:

Lift the cover slightly, then push and slide it to the end completely so that both the panel buttons and keyboard are visible. You can also open the key cover so that only the keyboard appears, which hides the panel controls.

To close the key cover:

Slide the cover toward you and gently lower it over the keys.

CAUTION: Hold the cover with both hands when opening or closing it. Do not release it until it is fully opened or closed to avoid catching fingers. Do not place objects on top of the key cover.

To raise the music rest:

1. Pull the music rest up and toward yourself as far as it will go.

2. Flip down the two metal supports at the left and right on the rear of the music rest.

3. Lower the music rest so that it rests on the metal supports.

To lower the music rest:

1. Pull the music rest toward yourself as far as it will go.

2. Raise the two metal supports at the rear of the music rest.

3. Gently lower the music rest backward until it is all the way down.

1. Connect the power cord:

First, insert the plug of the power cable into the AC connector on the Clavinova. Then, plug the other end into a proper AC outlet on the wall.

2. Turn the power on:

Press the [POWER] switch located on the right of the keyboard. The display in the center of the panel and the power indicator below the left end of the keyboard will light up. If you close the key cover without turning the power off, the power indicator remains lit.

To turn the power off:

Press the [POWER] switch again. The display and power indicator will turn off.

NOTE: Even when the instrument is turned off, a minimum level of electricity is still flowing. When not using the instrument for a long time or during electrical storms, unplug the AC power plug from the wall outlet.

To adjust the overall volume, use the [MASTER VOLUME] slider located at the left of the panel. Play the keyboard while you adjust the slider to hear the change in sound level. This slider adjusts the volume level of the entire keyboard sound, as well as the output to the [PHONES] jacks and AUX OUT jacks.

I.A. Control (Intelligent Acoustic Control) is a function that automatically adjusts the sound quality according to the overall volume of the instrument. It allows both low and high sounds to be heard clearly, even at low volumes. This function is only effective for the sound output from the instrument’s speakers.

• Turning On/Off: Press the [I. A. CONTROL] button to turn the function on and off. The lamp lights when it is on.

• Adjusting Depth: Hold down the [I. A. CONTROL] button and use the [-/NO] [+/YES] buttons to adjust the depth. The range is from -3 to 3. Higher values make low and high sounds clearer at lower volumes. The current setting appears on the display while the button is held.

• Reset to Default: To recall the default setting (0), hold down the [I. A. CONTROL] button and simultaneously press the [-/NO] and [+/YES] buttons together.

Using Headphones:

Connect a pair of standard stereo headphones to one of the two [PHONES] jacks. You can connect two sets of headphones simultaneously. Do not use headphones at a high volume for an extended period to avoid hearing loss. You can also install the included headphone hanger using the two provided screws.

Switching the speakers on/off:

The [SPEAKER] switch turns the internal speakers on or off.

• NORMAL: The speakers produce sound as long as headphones are not connected.

• ON: The speakers always produce sound.

• OFF: The speakers produce no sound.

The YAMAHA CLAVINOVA CLP-470 has three pedals: Damper (right), Sostenuto (center), and Soft (left).

• Damper (Right) Pedal: When pressed, sound is sustained even after keys are released. It also features a Half-pedal function for more delicate control over the sustain. For models with the GP Responsive Damper Pedal, remove the vinyl cover for optimal effect.

• Sostenuto (Center) Pedal: If you play a note or chord and press this pedal while holding the note(s), those specific notes will sustain as long as the pedal is held. Subsequent notes will not sustain.

• Soft (Left) Pedal: This pedal reduces the volume and slightly changes the timbre of notes played while the pedal is pressed. It does not affect notes that are already sustaining.

The center and left pedals can also be assigned to the song start/pause function in the Function mode.

You can select four different types of keyboard touch sensitivity by pressing the [TOUCH] button to match your playing style.

• HARD: Requires keys to be played quite hard to produce maximum loudness.

• MEDIUM: Produces a standard keyboard response. (Default setting)

• SOFT: Allows maximum loudness with relatively light key pressure.

• FIXED: All notes are produced at the same volume regardless of how hard the keyboard is played. No indicators are lit.

To change the volume level when in FIXED mode, hold down the [TOUCH] button and use the [-/NO] [+/YES] buttons. The volume range is from 1 to 127. The default is 64, which can be recalled by pressing both [-/NO] and [+/YES] buttons together while holding [TOUCH].

1. Start the metronome:

Press the [METRONOME] button. The beat indicator in the display will flash at the current tempo.

2. Adjusting the tempo:

Press the [TEMPO/FUNCTION] button (indicator lights), then use the [TEMPO/FUNCTION ▼▲] buttons to set the tempo from 5 to 500 beats per minute. The default setting (120) can be recalled by pressing both buttons simultaneously.

3. Adjusting the time signature:

Hold down the [METRONOME] button and use the [-/NO]/[+/YES] buttons to set the beat from 0 to 15. The first beat is accented with a bell sound. When set to “0,” clicks sound on all beats. The default is 0.

4. Stop the metronome:

Press the [METRONOME] button again.

1. Press the [DEMO] button to enter Demo mode. The Voice button indicators will flash in sequence.

2. Press one of the Voice buttons to start playback of all Demo Songs, starting from the song corresponding to the pressed button. If you wait without pressing any buttons, the GRAND PIANO 1 Demo Song will begin.

3. To stop the demo, press the [DEMO] or [STOP] button. To pause a demo song, press the [PLAY/PAUSE] button.

Brilliance:

Press the [BRILLIANCE] button to change the tonality. Options are BRIGHT, NORMAL, and MELLOW.

Reverb:

Press the [REVERB] button to add acoustic ambiance. Types include ROOM, HALL 1, HALL 2, and STAGE. To adjust the reverb depth (0-20), hold down the [REVERB] button and press the [-/NO] or [+/YES] buttons.

Effect:

Press the [EFFECT] button to add effects like CHORUS, PHASER, TREMOLO, or ROTARY SP. To adjust the effect depth (0-20), hold down the [EFFECT] button and press the [-/NO] or [+/YES] buttons.

Transpose:

This function shifts the pitch of the keyboard up or down in semitone units. To set the transposition amount (-12 to +12), hold down the [TRANSPOSE] button and press the [-/NO] [+/YES] buttons. Press the [TRANSPOSE] button to toggle the function on (flashing lamp) or off.

Dual mode (Layering Voices):

1. Press two Voice buttons at the same time to activate Dual mode. The indicators for both selected Voices will light up.

2. To exit Dual mode, press any single Voice button.

Split mode (Splitting the Keyboard):

1. Press the [SPLIT] button to activate Split mode (indicator lights).

2. To specify the split point, hold down the [SPLIT] button and press the desired key on the keyboard.

3. Select a Voice for the right hand by pressing a Voice button.

4. Select a Voice for the left hand by holding the [SPLIT] button and pressing a Voice button.

5. To exit Split mode, press the [SPLIT] button again.

The YAMAHA CLAVINOVA CLP-470 can play back songs from four different memory locations or “Drives”.

1. Select a Song drive: Press the [SONG SELECT] button repeatedly until the lamp for the desired drive (PRESET / USER MIDI / USB MIDI / USB AUDIO) lights up. (For USB drives, a USB storage device must be connected).

2. Select a Song: Use the [-/NO] and [+/YES] buttons to select a song number, “rnd” (random), or “ALL” (play all in sequence).

3. Start playback: Press the [PLAY/PAUSE] button. The display shows the measure number (for MIDI Songs) or playing time (for Audio Songs).

4. Control playback:

• Adjust Tempo (MIDI Songs): Press the [TEMPO/FUNCTION] button and use the [TEMPO/FUNCTION ▼▲] buttons.

• Pause: Press [PLAY/PAUSE] to pause; press again to resume.

• Rewind/Fast forward: Use the [-/NO] or [+/YES] buttons during playback or pause.

5. Stop playback: Press the [STOP] button.

Part Cancel function (MIDI Songs):

When a song is selected, both [RIGHT] and [LEFT] lamps light up. Press either button to turn off the playback for that hand’s part, allowing you to practice it while the other part plays back.

A-B Repeat function (MIDI Songs):

1. During playback, specify the start point (A) by holding the [TEMPO/FUNCTION] button and pressing [PLAY/PAUSE].

2. Specify the end point (B) by holding [TEMPO/FUNCTION] and pressing [PLAY/PAUSE] again. The designated section will now repeat.

3. To cancel, hold [TEMPO/FUNCTION] and press [PLAY/PAUSE] again, or select a different song.

Sync Start:

To start song playback as soon as you play a key, press the [PLAY/PAUSE] button while holding down the [STOP] button. The [PLAY/PAUSE] lamp will flash. Pressing any key will start the song.

You can perform either MIDI recording or Audio recording. For recording to a USB device, ensure it is connected first.

1. Select a destination drive: Press [SONG SELECT] to choose USER MIDI (instrument memory), USB MIDI, or USB AUDIO.

2. Select a Song number: Use the [-/NO] [+/YES] buttons to select an empty song number to record to.

3. Select Voice and other parameters: Choose your desired Voice and set parameters like time signature.

4. Enter Record mode: Press the [REC] button. The part lamps will flash red.

5. Start recording:

• For MIDI Recording: Recording starts automatically when you play a key on the keyboard. Alternatively, press [PLAY/PAUSE] to start recording immediately (to capture initial silence).

• For Audio Recording: Press the [PLAY/PAUSE] button to start recording.

6. Stop recording: Press the [STOP] or [REC] button. Dashes will appear on the display as the data is saved, followed by “End”.

7. Play back the recording: Press the [PLAY/PAUSE] button to listen to your performance.

1. Initial Setup: Select a destination drive and song number as you would for a quick recording.

2. Enter Record Mode: Press the [REC] button.

3. Select a Recording Part: Press the [RIGHT] or [LEFT] button. The lamp for the selected part will flash red.

4. Start Recording: Begin playing to start recording the selected part. If the other part is already recorded, you can listen to it during recording by ensuring its lamp is lit (green).

5. Stop Recording: Press [STOP] or [REC].

6. Record the Other Part: Repeat steps 2-5 for the other part to complete your song.

1. Select a User Song: Select the MIDI song you wish to edit.

2. Change the settings: Use the panel buttons to change the settings. For example, press a different Voice button to change the voice, or use the Tempo controls to change the tempo.

3. Enter Record mode and select a part: Press the [REC] button, then press the [RIGHT] or [LEFT] button. The part lamp will flash red.

4. Save the changed settings: Simultaneously hold down the [REC] button and press the [STOP] button. The display will show dashes as it saves, then “End”.

To manage files, you must first connect a USB storage device.

Convert a MIDI Song to an Audio Song:

1. Select the MIDI Song you want to convert (from USER MIDI or USB MIDI).

2. Press the [FILE] button so the MIDI TO AUDIO lamp lights.

3. Hold [FILE] and use [-/NO]/[+/YES] to select a destination Audio Song number (A.00 – A.99).

4. Release [FILE] and press [+/YES] (twice if overwriting) to start the conversion. The MIDI song will play in real-time as it records to an audio file.

Copy a User Song to a USB device:

1. Select the User Song (from USER MIDI) to copy.

2. Press [FILE] so the COPY TO USB lamp lights.

3. Hold [FILE] and use [-/NO]/[+/YES] to select a destination User Song number (U.00 – U.99).

4. Release [FILE] and press [+/YES] (twice if overwriting) to start copying.

Delete a Song file from a USB device:

1. Select the drive (USB AUDIO or USB MIDI) containing the file.

2. Press [FILE] so the DEL./FORMAT lamp lights.

3. Hold [FILE] and use [-/NO]/[+/YES] to select the song number to delete.

4. Release [FILE] and press [+/YES] twice to delete.

Format a USB storage device:

1. Press [FILE] so the DEL./FORMAT lamp lights.

2. Hold [FILE] and simultaneously press [-/NO] and [+/YES] to call up “For.”

3. Release the buttons and press [+/YES] twice to execute the format. This will erase all data on the device.

To restore the factory default settings, hold down the C7 key (the right-most key on the keyboard) and press the power switch to turn the power on. This operation will erase backup data (including backup settings in the Function mode). User Songs and external Songs stored in the internal memory will be retained.

NOTICE: Do not turn off the power of the instrument while “CLr” is shown in the display, as this may delete all song data.
