WAT 9063004 (01) PDF SUMMARY:
What should you determine before installing this article on an aircraft?
You must determine that the aircraft installation conditions are within the TSO standards, which include any accepted integrated non-TSO functions.
What is required for TSO articles and any accepted integrated non-TSO function(s) before installation in an aircraft?
They must have separate approval for installation in an aircraft.
How must the article be installed?
The article may be installed only according to 14 CFR part 43 or the applicable airworthiness requirements.
What does connecting the synchronize signal of any Whelen LED Anti-collision assembly cause?
It will cause the lights to flash at the same time.
What should be done if synchronization is not needed?
The connection may be left open.
What is the nominal operational voltage of the light assembly?
The nominal operational voltage is 28VDC, and it is operational from 22-32VDC.
What is the input current for the green LED position light?
The input current is 0.23 Amps.
What is the input current for the red LED position light?
The input current is 0.26 Amps.
What is the average input current for the LED Anti-Collision Light?
The average input current is 0.57 Amps.
What is the flash rate of the light assembly?
The flash rate is 45 ± 5 FPM.
What does an approved forward lighting system consist of?
An approved forward lighting system consists of two wingtip assemblies.
Where is the wingtip attachment defined?
The wingtip attachment is defined in Whelen Document TF172.
When are additional tests required for installation?
Certain types of installations may require additional testing.
What is specified in the Airworthiness Limitations section?
The Airworthiness Limitations section specifies inspections and other maintenance required under §43.16 and §91.403 of the Federal Aviation Regulations, unless an alternative program has been approved.
Are there any airworthiness limitations associated with the installation of the light assembly?
No, there are no airworthiness limitations associated with the installation of the light assembly.
How many LEDs are in the anti-collision light?
The anti-collision light is designed with 30 LEDs.
How many LEDs are in the position light?
The position light is designed with 14 red or 12 green LEDs.
What happens if one bank of LEDs fails for the Anti-Collision light or the position light?
The assembly still meets the FAR requirements for intensity and chromaticity.
What happens if a second bank of LEDs fails for either the Anti-Collision light or the Position light?
The electronics module must be replaced.
What happens if a failure of multiple banks of LEDs is detected?
The unit will shut off that portion of the lighthead after 20-25 seconds.
What should be used to reduce eye strain during LED inspection?
Use an optical filter such as dark glasses or a blue covering dome during LED inspection.
What should be inspected on the lens area of the assembly?
The abrasion resistant, protective mask should be inspected for excessive scratching, pitting, discoloration, cuts, blisters, perforations or edge lifting.
When should the lens/retainer assembly be replaced?
The lens/retainer assembly should be replaced as required.
What does the abrasion protective mask require?
The abrasion protective mask requires periodic cleaning and waxing.
What should the lens be cleaned with?
Clean the lens with a non-alcohol based cleaning solution.
What should be used to wax the lens after cleaning?
Wax the lens with a non-silicon based paste wax after cleaning.
How often should an annual inspection be performed?
An annual inspection shall be performed unless the OEM specifies a shorter interval.
What should you refer to for specific removal and installation instructions?
Refer to the OEM manual for your aircraft for specific removal and installation instructions.
What should you not touch when handling the LEDs?
Do not touch the LEDs with either fingers or sharp objects.
What could touching the LEDs with fingers or sharp objects do?
It could soil or damage the LEDs and affect the optical performance of the light.
What should you do with the 8 screws and nuts during the initial step of installation?
Remove and discard them.
What is the second step of the installation procedure?
Remove the Lens/Retainer assembly from the LED module.
What is the third step of the installation procedure?
Position the Lens/Retainer assembly onto the wingtip mounting flange in its mounted position.
What is the fourth step of the installation procedure?
Using the Lens/Retainer assembly as a template, mark the 22 mounting hole locations onto the wingtip mounting flange.
What is the fifth step of the installation procedure?
Remove the Lens/Retainer assembly from the wingtip mounting flange and drill to provide #10 threaded mounting holes.
What should you note about the H-bracket holes during drilling?
The H-bracket holes (8 places) do not receive threads at this time.
What is the sixth step of the installation procedure?
Remove the H-brackets from the LED module, and do not discard the (4) #10 screws.
What is the seventh step of the installation procedure?
Place the appropriate H-bracket into its installed position inside the wingtip mounting flange. Secure the H-bracket to the wingtip mounting flange using a Cleco clamp at the 4 mounting hole locations.
What is the eighth step of the installation procedure?
With the H-bracket in position, match-drill and rivet a #10, 2-lug nut plate to the inside of the H-bracket (4 places).
What should you note about the H-bracket at this time?
The H-bracket is now permanently affixed to the aircraft. Repeat for the remaining H-bracket.
What is the ninth step of the installation procedure?
Secure the LED module onto the installed H-brackets using the original hardware.
What is the tenth step of the installation procedure?
Make the necessary wiring connections and test for proper operation of the LED module.
What is the eleventh step of the installation procedure?
Using the appropriate #10 flat head screws, install the Lens/Retainer assembly onto the wingtip mounting flange.
What is the twelfth step of the installation procedure?
Check all avionics systems for interference from this installation.
What is the thirteenth step of the installation procedure?
A flight check should be performed by a properly certified pilot.
What should be done if required after installation?
Update aircraft records utilizing FAA Field Approval (Form 337) or equivalent.
