How do I use the LifeStraw® for the first time or when it’s dry?

Upon first use or anytime the filter is dry, uncap both ends and stand it up in safe water (keeping mouthpiece out of water and dry) for 20 seconds to allow water to prime the filter. Then take 5 quick sips to get water flowing.

How do I start using the LifeStraw®?

Start using LifeStraw® by uncapping both ends and standing it up in water for 10 seconds. Then take 5 quick sips from the mouthpiece.

What should I do with the LifeStraw® after returning from a hiking trip?

When returning from a hiking trip, rinse with safe tap water, uncap both ends, and let dry before placing it away in storage.

How do I clean the LifeStraw®?

Regularly blow air through your LifeStraw® after drinking to keep the filter clean and prevent it from clogging.

How do I know when to replace the LifeStraw®?

LifeStraw® will no longer filter water when the product has reached the end of its working life. Inability to sip water through LifeStraw® indicates that the product should be replaced.

What conditions can limit the effectiveness of the LifeStraw®?

The effectiveness of LifeStraw® may be limited by environmental or hygienic conditions that could contribute to the recontamination of water after it has passed through the product’s internal filter. These conditions include but are not limited to:

1. Use of the LifeStraw® with dirty and bacteria-contaminated hands

2. Placement of LifeStraw® in a mouth contaminated with bacteria

3. Use of the LifeStraw® in a dense coliform environment

4. Failure to maintain a sterile mouthpiece on the LifeStraw®

5. Sharing of LifeStraw® between two individuals

6. Use in or exposure to extreme heat or freezing temperatures


What are the safety warnings and cautions for using LifeStraw®?

Read the usage and safety instructions carefully before using LifeStraw®. LifeStraw® is a personal water filtration tool and should only be used for filtering water. The quality of the filtered water is not guaranteed if the product is submitted to conditions other than those encountered during its normal use. Drinking untreated water may expose you to harmful microorganisms and increase your risk of gastrointestinal illness. Improper usage of LifeStraw® increases your risk of exposure to harmful microorganisms and increases your risk of gastrointestinal illness. Reduce your risk of becoming sick by following these safety instructions and by educating yourself on backcountry water safety. Always keep the mouthpiece cap closed when product is not in use. Stop using LifeStraw® if cracks are noted on the main LifeStraw® body and especially on the dark blue bottom part. What types of water should I never use LifeStraw® to filter?

Never use LifeStraw® to filter seawater or chemically contaminated water, including water from mining tailing ponds or from near large agricultural operations.

What should I avoid doing to prevent damaging the LifeStraw®?

To prevent breakage, do not drop or hit LifeStraw® against a hard object. Do not drop the product in polluted water as this might contaminate the membrane. DO NOT DROP or place pressure on this product in any manner. The intentional or unintentional impact of this product on a solid surface may damage the filtration mechanism within the LifeStraw® and render it inefficient and unusable.

Can children use the LifeStraw®?

This product must not be used by children without the supervision of an adult.
