Never block the openings by placing the TV/DVD on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. Do not place it in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided.

10. Power Sources: This TV/DVD should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label.

11. Grounding or Polarization: This TV/DVD is equipped with a polarized alternating-current line plug. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If it still fails to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.

12. Power-Cord Protection: Power-supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them.

For safe operation and satisfactory performance of your SYMPHONIC BL519DD, keep the following in mind when selecting a place for its installation:

• Shield it from direct sunlight and keep it away from sources of intense heat.

• Avoid dusty or humid places.

• Avoid places with insufficient ventilation for proper heat dissipation. Do not block the ventilation holes at the top and bottom of the unit. Do not place the unit on a carpet because this will block the ventilation holes.

• Install unit in a horizontal position.

• Avoid locations subject to strong vibration.

• Do not place the TV/DVD near strong magnetic fields.

• Avoid moving TV/DVD to locations where temperature differences are extreme.

• Do not handle the power cord with wet hands.

• Do not pull on the power cord when disconnecting it from an AC wall outlet. Grasp it by the plug.

• If, by accident, water is spilled on your unit, unplug the power cord immediately and take the unit to our Authorized Service Center for servicing.

• Do not put your fingers or objects into the TV/DVD disc loading tray.

• Do not place anything directly on top of the unit.

Moisture condensation may occur inside the unit when it is moved from a cold place to a warm place, or after heating a cold room or under conditions of high humidity. If a DVD is played in a TV/DVD which has moisture, it may damage the DVD and TV/DVD. Therefore when the condensation occurs inside the unit, turn POWER on and allow at least 2 hours for the unit to dry out.

• Dolby Digital sound: This player can handle Dolby Digital surround sound having 5.1 channels when connected to a Dolby Digital decoder.

• Still/fast/slow/step playback: Various playback modes are available including still pictures, fast forward/reverse, slow motion and step frames.

• Random playback for audio CD and MP3: This player can shuffle the order of tracks to play them in random order.

• Program playback for audio CD and MP3: You can program the order of tracks to play them in any desired order.

• DVD menus in a desired language: You can display DVD menus in a desired language, if available on a DVD.

• Screen saver/Auto power-off functions: The screen saver program starts when there is no input from the player for five minutes in the stop mode. When the screen saver program is activated for 15 minutes, the power is automatically turned off.

• Subtitles in a desired language: You can select a desired language for the display subtitles, if that language is available on a disc.

• Selecting a camera angle: You can select the desired camera angle, if a disc contains sequences recorded from different angles.

• Choices for audio language and sound mode: You can select the desired audio language and sound mode, if different languages and modes are available on a disc.

• Parental lock: You can set the control level to limit playback of discs which may not be suitable for children.

• Automatic detection of discs: This player automatically detects if the loaded disc is DVD, audio CD or MP3 on disc.

• On-screen display: Information about the current operation can be displayed on a TV screen.

14. HEADPHONE Jack: To connect headphone (not supplied) for personal listening.

37. Power cord: Connect to a standard AC outlet (120V/60Hz). NOTE: Remove the power cord from the hook to avoid breaking a wire before you connect to a standard AC outlet.

38. COAXIAL digital audio out Jack (DVD Audio Only): Connect to the digital input of an external amplifier or decoder.

39. ANT. in Jack: Connect to an antenna, cable system, or satellite system.

1) Open the battery compartment cover by pressing the cover on the remote unit in the direction of the arrow.

2) Insert 2 “AA” penlight batteries into the battery compartment in the direction indicated by the polarity (+/-) markings.

3) Replace the cover.

NOTES:

• Do not mix alkaline and manganese batteries.

• Do not mix old and new batteries.

You can connect your SYMPHONIC BL519DD in several ways depending on your signal source:

VHF/UHF COMBINED ANTENNA: A VHF/UHF 75 ohm combination antenna can be connected to the ANT. IN terminal.

VHF/UHF SEPARATE ANTENNAS: In some areas it will be necessary to use an outdoor antenna. If you have separate VHF and UHF antennas, you will need a VHF/UHF Combiner (not supplied) to connect both to the single ANT. IN jack.

CABLE WITHOUT CONVERTER/DESCRAMBLER BOX: Use this connection if your cable system connects directly to your TV/DVD without a converter box. Use the TV/DVD Remote Control to select channels.

CABLE WITH CONVERTER/DESCRAMBLER BOX OR SATELLITE BOX: If your cable service supplies you with a converter box or if you use a satellite system, connect the output of the box to the ANT. IN jack on the TV/DVD. Channel selection must then be made with the converter box or satellite box. To view a channel, set the TV/DVD to the output channel of the box (e.g., CH3) and select the desired channel on your Cable or Satellite Box.

NOTE: Before plugging an antenna into the ANT. IN jack, check that the pin is not bent. If it is bent, straighten the pin as illustrated, then plug it in.

When you watch a program recorded on another source (VCR or video camera), use the audio/video input jacks on the front of the TV/DVD.

1. Connect the audio/video output jacks of the other source to the AUDIO L/R and VIDEO jacks on the front of this TV/DVD using Audio/Video cables (not supplied).

2. Press SELECT on the remote until “AUX” appears on the screen.

NOTE: When you connect a monaural VCR, connect its Audio output jack to the AUDIO L jack of this TV/DVD. The audio will output in both L and R channels equally.

Use an audio coaxial digital cable (available at retail) for the audio connections. This is for DVD audio output only.

1. Connect the COAXIAL digital audio out jack on the rear of the SYMPHONIC BL519DD to the COAXIAL DIGITAL AUDIO INPUT jack on your amplifier, MD deck, or DAT deck.

NOTES:

• The audio source on a disc in a 5.1 channel Dolby Digital surround format cannot be recorded as digital sound by an MD or DAT deck.

• Be sure to turn off the power to all components in the system before connecting another component.

• Refer to the Owner’s Manuals for the components to be connected to the TV/DVD.

• Set DOLBY DIGITAL to OFF for audio output in the setup mode. Playing a TV/DVD using incorrect settings may generate noise distortion, and may also damage the speakers. (See the section on Audio Settings to set DOLBY DIGITAL to OFF.)

If using this TV/DVD to play a DVD disc in a 5.1 channel Dolby Digital surround format, the TV/DVD outputs a DOLBY DIGITAL Data stream from its COAXIAL digital audio out jack. By hooking the player up to a Dolby Digital decoder, you can enjoy surround sound.

1. Use an audio coaxial digital cable to connect the COAXIAL digital audio out jack on the rear of the SYMPHONIC BL519DD to the COAXIAL DIGITAL AUDIO INPUT jack on your Dolby Digital decoder.

2. Connect your speakers (front, center, surround) and subwoofer to the corresponding outputs on the Dolby Digital decoder.

NOTES:

• Be sure to turn off the power to all components in the system before connecting another component.

• Refer to the Owner’s Manuals for the components to be connected to the TV/DVD.

• If connected to a Dolby Digital decoder, set DOLBY DIGITAL to ON for audio output in the setup mode.

• Unless connected to a Dolby Digital decoder, set DOLBY DIGITAL to OFF for audio output in the setup mode. Playing a TV/DVD using incorrect settings may generate noise distortion, and may also damage the speakers.

You can program the tuner to scan all the channels you receive in your area. NOTE: Channel memory programming is NOT needed when connected to a cable box or satellite box.

1. Plug the TV/DVD power cord into a standard AC outlet.

2. Press POWER to turn on the TV/DVD.

3. Select the On Screen Language: The SET UP menu appears. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “LANGUAGE”. Then, press ENTER to select “ENGLISH”, “ESP” (Spanish), or “FRA” (French).

4. Begin auto preset: Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “AUTO PRESET”. Then, press ENTER. The tuner scans and memorizes all active channels in your area.

5. After scanning, the tuner stops on the lowest memorized channel.

NOTES:

• The TV/DVD distinguishes between standard TV channels and cable(CATV) channels.

• The TV/DVD may memorize TV channels as CATV channels if reception conditions are poor. If this happens, try the AUTO PRESET action again when reception conditions are better.

You can delete channels you no longer receive or seldom watch from the memory.

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “CHANNEL SET UP”, then press ENTER.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “ADD/DELETE CH”, then press ENTER.

3. Enter the desired channel number. Press ▲ or ▼ until your desired channel number appears. You can also use the Number buttons or CH. ▲/▼ to enter it (Example: CH8).

4. Press ENTER. The channel number changes to light red, and the channel is deleted from memory. To add a deleted channel back, press ENTER again while it is selected. The channel color will change to light blue, indicating it has been added.

5. To delete another channel, repeat steps 3 and 4. When finished, press SETUP to exit.

The TV/DVD’s picture controls – BRIGHT, CONTRAST, COLOR, TINT and SHARPNESS – are preset to factory specifications, but you may need to make further adjustments. Make sure the TV/DVD power is turned on.

1. Press PICTURE on the remote control.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ until the desired control (BRIGHT, CONTRAST, COLOR, TINT, or SHARPNESS) is displayed.

3. Press ◄ or ► to adjust to your desired level within 5 seconds.

The picture adjustment display will disappear from the TV screen after about 5 seconds unless you press any buttons.

If there is a power failure, the unit will retain its memory for this feature.

Magnetism from nearby appliances and speakers might affect the color of the TV picture. If this happens, move this unit away from the appliance. If the color is still not correct, disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet then reconnect it after 30 minutes. The TV can repair itself automatically.

The Sleep Timer function enables you to shut off the power without pressing POWER after a desired time period.

To set the Sleep Timer:

Press SLEEP on the remote control repeatedly. The timer is set up to 120 minutes, in 30-minute increments each time SLEEP is pressed (30, 60, 90, 120 minutes).

To cancel the Sleep Timer:

Press SLEEP repeatedly until “SLEEP 0 MINUTE” is displayed.

NOTES:

• If you disconnect the unit from the AC outlet, or if there is a power failure, the sleep time will be lost.

• To view the time left, press SLEEP once. The display will disappear again after 10 seconds.

You can view specially labeled (cc) TV programs with either a dialogue caption or text display. Make sure the TV/DVD power is turned on.

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “CAPTION”.

2. Press ENTER until your desired caption menu appears. The options are [CAPTION1], [CAPTION2], [TEXT1], or [TEXT2].

3. Press SETUP on the remote control to return to TV mode.

To cancel the Closed Caption system: Repeat steps 1 and 2, but select [OFF] using ENTER. Press SETUP to exit.

NOTE: If the TV/DVD displays a black box on the TV screen, this means it is set to TEXT mode. To clear the screen, select [CAPTION1], [CAPTION2], or [OFF].

V-CHIP enables parents to prevent their children from watching inappropriate material on TV. Make sure the TV/DVD is powered on.

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “V-CHIP SET UP”, then press ENTER.

2. Press the Number buttons on the remote control to enter the 4-digit access code. The default code is 0000.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “TV RATING”, then press ENTER.

4. Select a desired rating category (e.g., TV-PG) by pressing ▲ or ▼. Then, press ENTER to select [BLOCK] or [VIEW]. When you block a rating, all higher ratings are automatically blocked. When you view a rating, all lower ratings are automatically viewed.

5. For ratings with sub-ratings (TV-Y7, TV-PG, TV-14, TV-MA), you can set them individually. After selecting the main rating, press ENTER to see the sub-ratings. Use ▲ or ▼ to select a sub-rating (e.g., V for Violence) and press ENTER to set it to [BLOCK] or [VIEW].

6. Press SETUP on the remote control to return to the original mode.

The following table explains the rating categories:

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “V-CHIP SET UP”, then press ENTER.

2. Enter your 4-digit access code (default is 0000).

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “MPAA RATING”, then press ENTER.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select your desired rating (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17, X). Then, press ENTER to select [BLOCK] or [VIEW]. When you block a rating, all higher ratings are automatically blocked.

5. Press SETUP on the remote control to exit.

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. Navigate to “V-CHIP SET UP” and press ENTER.

2. Enter your current 4-digit access code (default is 0000).

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to point to “CHANGE CODE”, then press ENTER.

4. Press the Number buttons to enter your desired new 4-digit access code in the NEW CODE space. Then, enter the same code in the CONFIRM CODE space.

5. Press SETUP to exit.

NOTE: If you unplug the power cord or a power failure occurs, the changed access code will be lost and will return to default (0000). You will need to change your access code again.

*Depending on the types or the writing method of the medium some discs can not be played.

This player conforms to the NTSC color system. You cannot play discs recorded in other color systems such as PAL or SECAM.

The following discs cannot be played back on this TV/DVD:

• DVD with region codes other than 1 or ALL.

• DVD-ROM

• DVD-RAM (Never play back, otherwise malfunction may result.)

• CD-ROM

• VSD

• CDV (Only plays back the audio part.)

• CD-G (Only plays back the sound.)

• CD-I (Never play back, otherwise malfunction may result.)

• SACD

• Photo CD (Never play back, otherwise malfunction may result.)

• Video CD (Never play back, otherwise malfunction may result.)

1. Press POWER. The power will turn on.

2. Press OPEN/CLOSE to open the disc loading tray.

3. Place the chosen disc in the tray, with the label facing up.

4. Press PLAY. The tray will close automatically, and playback will then start from the first chapter or track of the disc. If playback does not start automatically, press PLAY.

5. Press STOP to stop playback.

RESUME (DVD-V, CD):

1. During playback, press STOP. A resume message will appear on the TV screen.

2. Press PLAY. Playback will resume from the point at which it was stopped. To cancel, press STOP twice.

PAUSE (DVD-V, CD):

1. During playback, press PAUSE. Playback will pause and sound will be muted.

2. To continue, press PLAY.

STEP BY STEP PLAYBACK (DVD-V):

1. During playback, press PAUSE.

2. The disc goes forward by one frame each time PAUSE is pressed.

3. To exit, press PLAY.

FAST FORWARD/REVERSE SEARCH (DVD-V, CD, MP3):

1. During playback, press FWD ►► or REV ◄◄ repeatedly to select the required speed: x2, x8, x50, x100. (For audio CDs speed is fixed at x16; for MP3 speed is fixed at x8).

2. To return to normal playback, press PLAY.

SLOW FORWARD / SLOW REVERSE (DVD-V):

1. During playback, press PAUSE.

2. Press FWD ►► or REV ◄◄ repeatedly to select the required speed: 1/16, 1/8, 1/2 of normal playback.

3. To return to normal playback, press PLAY.

ZOOM (DVD-V):

1. Press ZOOM during playback.

2. Press ZOOM repeatedly to select the required zoom factor: ZOOM1, ZOOM2, ZOOM3, or OFF.

3. Use the Arrow (▲/▼/◄/►) to move the zoomed picture across the screen.

4. To exit zoom mode, press ZOOM to OFF.

TRACK SEARCH (Audio CD):

• Using Number buttons: Press Number to enter the desired track number. For single-digit tracks (1-9), press a single number. To play track 26, press +10, 2, 6.

• Using SEARCH MODE: Press SEARCH MODE, then within 30 seconds, select a desired track number using the Number buttons (press 0 first for single digits).

• Using SKIP buttons: Press SKIP ►►| to move to the next track. Press SKIP |◄◄ to go back to the beginning of the current track or to previous tracks.

TITLE / CHAPTER SEARCH (DVD-V):

1. Press SEARCH MODE once for Chapter search, or twice for Title search during playback.

2. Enter the desired chapter/title number using the Number buttons on the remote control (press 0 first for single digits).

TIME SEARCH (DVD-V, CD):

1. During playback, press SEARCH MODE three times (twice for CD) to display the Time Search on the TV screen.

2. Within 30 seconds, enter a desired disc time using the Number buttons.

MARKER SETUP SCREEN (DVD-V, CD):

1. Press SEARCH MODE four times (three for CD) during playback to display the Markers screen.

2. Press Arrow (◄/►) to select a marker number (1-10).

3. When playback reaches the desired point, press ENTER to set the marker.

4. To return to a marker later, bring up the Marker screen, select the desired marker with Arrow (◄/►), and press ENTER.

REPEAT (DVD-V, CD):

• DVD-V: During playback, press REPEAT to cycle through Chapter repeat, Title repeat, and repeat Off.

• CD: During playback, press REPEAT to cycle through Track repeat, All (entire disc) repeat, and repeat Off.

• A-B Repeat (DVD-V, CD): During playback, press REPEAT A-B at your chosen starting point (A- appears). Press REPEAT A-B again at your chosen end point (A-B appears) to start the repeat sequence. Press REPEAT A-B a third time to exit.

PROGRAM (CD):

1. In stop mode, press MODE. The PROGRAM screen will appear.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to select a track, then press ENTER. Repeat this step to add more tracks to the program (up to 99).

3. Press PLAY to play the programmed tracks.

RANDOM PLAYBACK (CD):

1. In stop mode, press MODE twice. The RANDOM screen appears.

2. Press PLAY to start random playback.

When a CD with MP3 files is inserted, the MP3 menu will appear on the TV screen in stop mode.

MP3 PLAYBACK:

1. In stop mode, use the Arrow (▲/▼) to select a group (folder) or track. If you select a group, press ► or ENTER to see the tracks within it.

2. Select a track and press ENTER to start playing tracks from that point onwards.

3. Press STOP to stop playback.

TRACK SELECTION DURING PLAYBACK:

1. Press SEARCH MODE during playback. The FILE LIST will appear.

2. Select a desired track using Arrow (▲/▼/◄/►). Press ► to go to the next hierarchy (enter a folder) and ◄ to go back.

3. Press PLAY to start playback.

PROGRAM & RANDOM MP3 PLAYBACK:

Programming and random playback for MP3 discs work similarly to Audio CDs. Use the MODE button in stop mode to access the PROGRAM and RANDOM screens.

SUBTITLE LANGUAGE (DVD-V):

Press SUBTITLE repeatedly during playback to cycle through available subtitle languages or to turn them OFF.

AUDIO LANGUAGE (DVD-V):

Press AUDIO repeatedly during playback to cycle through available audio languages.

CAMERA ANGLE (DVD-V):

When the camera angle icon appears on screen, press ANGLE repeatedly during playback to select your desired angle.

BLACK LEVEL SETTING (DVD-V):

Press MODE during playback, then press ENTER to switch ON/OFF. ON makes dark parts brighter. Press MODE twice or RETURN to exit.

STEREO SOUND MODE (CD):

Press AUDIO repeatedly during playback to select between STEREO, L-CH (left only), or R-CH (right only).

VIRTUAL SURROUND (DVD-V, CD, MP3):

Press MODE twice (once for CD/MP3) during playback. Press ENTER to set it to 1 (Natural effect), 2 (Emphasized effect), or OFF.

1. Press SETUP twice while the DVD player is in STOP mode. The DVD SETUP menu will appear. (If it does not appear, press PLAY, then STOP, then SETUP twice).

2. The initial screen is the QUICK setup. To access more options, press ► to select CUSTOM, then press ENTER.

3. From the CUSTOM menu, you can use the Arrow buttons (▲/▼/◄/►) and ENTER to navigate to and change settings for LANGUAGE, DISPLAY, AUDIO, and PARENTAL controls.

4. Press SETUP to exit the menu at any time.

Parental Control allows you to set the rating level of your DVD discs. Playback will stop if the disc’s ratings exceed the level you set.

1. Press SETUP twice in STOP mode to bring up the QUICK SETUP menu.

2. Press ► to select CUSTOM, then press ENTER.

3. Press Arrow (◄/►) to select PARENTAL, then press ENTER.

4. Enter your four-digit password, then press ENTER. (When doing this for the first time, enter any 4 digits except 4737. This will be your password from then on).

5. Press Arrow (▲/▼) to select PARENTAL LEVEL, then press ENTER.

6. Press Arrow (▲/▼) to select the desired level (1 to 8, or ALL to disable).

7. Press SETUP to exit.

IF YOU FORGET THE PASSWORD: At step 4, press 4, 7, 3, 7. Then enter your new password. The password will be cleared and the parental level will be set to ALL. You can then proceed from step 5.

CABINET CLEANING:

• Wipe the front panel and other exterior surfaces of the TV/DVD with a soft cloth immersed in lukewarm water and wrung dry.

• Never use a solvent or alcohol. Do not spray insecticide liquid near the TV/DVD. Such chemicals may cause damage and discoloration to the exposed surfaces.

DISC HANDLING:

• Handle the discs so that fingerprints and dust do not adhere to the surfaces of the discs.

• To clean-off, use a soft cloth.

• Do not use a hard cloth since this will mar the disc.

• Wipe the disc in a straight line from center to edge. Never wipe with a circular motion.

• Do not use detergent or abrasive cleaning agents.

• Always store the disc in its protective case when it is not used.
