The SONY WH-1000XM2 headset uses BLUETOOTH wireless technology, allowing you to listen to music or make phone calls wirelessly.

Listening to music

You can receive audio signals from a smartphone or music player to enjoy music wirelessly.

Talking on the phone

You can make and receive a call with your hands free, while leaving your smartphone or mobile phone in your bag or pocket.

You hear voice guidance in the following situations via the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset:

• When powering on: “Power on”

• When powering off: “Power off”

• When entering pairing mode: “BLUETOOTH pairing”

• When establishing a BLUETOOTH connection: “BLUETOOTH connected”

• When disconnecting a BLUETOOTH connection: “BLUETOOTH disconnected”

• When checking the remaining battery charge: “Battery level high” / “Battery level medium” / “Battery level low”

• When automatically turning off due to the low battery condition: “Please recharge headset”

• When turning on the noise canceling function: “Noise canceling”

• When turning on the Ambient Sound Mode: “Ambient sound”

• When turning off the noise canceling function and the Ambient Sound Mode: “Off”

• When starting the NC Optimizer: “Optimizer start”

When the software version of your headset is 2.0.0 or later:

• When Google Assistant is not available on the smartphone connected to the headset even if you press the Google Assistant button on the headset: “Google Assistant is not connected”

After opening the package, check that all items in the list are included. If items are missing, contact your dealer. Numbers in ( ) indicate the item amount.

When finished using the headset, fold it and put it in the supplied carrying case as shown in the manual’s diagrams.

To store the plug adaptor for in-flight use:

Put the plug adaptor for in-flight use in the holder in the carrying case.

Hint: When the remaining battery charge becomes low, the indicator turns from blue to red, except for pairing mode.

The headset contains a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Charge the headset using the supplied micro-USB cable.

1. Connect the supplied micro-USB cable to the headset, and then connect the other end to a booted computer.

• The indicator (red) of the headset lights up.

• Charging is completed in about 4 hours and the indicator (red) goes off automatically. The time required for charging may vary depending on the conditions of use.

2. After charging is complete, disconnect the micro-USB cable.

Note:

• You can use the headset by connecting the supplied headphone cable, even while charging.

• If charging starts while the headset is turned on, it will turn off automatically.

• The headset cannot be operated (turning on, BLUETOOTH pairing, etc.) while charging or if kept connected to the computer after charging is complete.

• The noise canceling function cannot be used while charging.

• If the headset is not used for a long time, the indicator (red) may not light up when you connect the micro-USB cable to charge the headset. In this case, wait a few minutes until the indicator (red) lights up.

• Use the supplied micro-USB cable only, and connect directly to a computer. Charging will not be completed properly via a USB hub.

The available operating times on a fully-charged battery are as follows. About 70 minutes of music playback is possible after 10 minutes of charging.

You can check the remaining battery charge in a few ways:

Using the Indicator and Voice Guidance:

When you turn on the headset or press the power button while it is on, the indicator (blue) flashes twice, then the indicator (red) flashes. You also hear a voice guidance.

• 3 red flashes: High “Battery level high”

• 2 red flashes: Medium “Battery level medium”

• 1 red flash: Low (needs to charge) “Battery level low”

When the battery is almost empty:

The indicator turns red. When the battery becomes empty, the headset sounds a warning beep, you hear the voice guidance “Please recharge headset”, and the headset turns off automatically.

When using an iPhone or iPod touch:

When the SONY WH-1000XM2 is connected to an iPhone or iPod touch (iOS 5.0 or later) that supports HFP (Hands-free Profile), it will show an icon that indicates the remaining battery charge on the screen. The battery level is indicated as follows:

• B: 100% to 70%

• C: 70% to 50%

• D: 50% to 20%

• E: 20% or lower (needs to charge)

Hint: You can also check the remaining battery charge with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. Android smartphones and iPhone/iPod touch support this app.

USB AC adaptor

Using a commercially-available USB AC adaptor capable of feeding in 1.5 A or 0.5 A.

Personal Computer (As of August 2017)

A personal computer with a pre-installed with any of the following operating systems and a USB port:

Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds until the indicator (blue) flashes.

Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds until the indicator (blue) turns off.

By touching the SONY WH-1000XM2 with an NFC-compatible smartphone (Android™ 4.1 or later), the headset turns on automatically and then pairs and makes a BLUETOOTH connection.

1. Unlock the screen of the smartphone if it is locked.

2. Select [Setting] – [More].

3. Set the NFC function to on.

4. Touch the headset with the smartphone. Touch the smartphone on the N-Mark of the headset. Keep touching the headset with the smartphone until the smartphone reacts.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the pairing and connection. When the headset is connected with the smartphone, the blue indicator starts flashing slowly. You hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

• To disconnect, touch the smartphone again.

• To connect a paired smartphone, perform step 4.

Before starting, ensure the smartphone is within 1 m (3 feet) of the headset, and the headset is charged.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset.

When you pair the headset with a device for the first time after purchase or initialization, the headset enters pairing mode automatically. To pair a second or subsequent device, press and hold the power button for about 7 seconds. Make sure that the indicator flashes blue and red alternately. You will hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH pairing”.

2. Unlock the screen of the Android smartphone.

3. Search for the headset on the smartphone.

1. Select [Setting] – [Bluetooth].

2. Turn on the BLUETOOTH function.

4. Touch [WH-1000XM2].

If passkey input is required, input “0000.” The headset and smartphone will pair and connect. You will hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

Before starting, ensure the iPhone is within 1 m (3 feet) of the headset, and the headset is charged.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset.

Before starting, ensure your computer has a BLUETOOTH function that supports music playback connections (A2DP), is within 1 m (3 feet) of the headset, and the headset is charged.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset.

Press and hold the power button for about 7 seconds until the indicator flashes blue and red alternately. You will hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH pairing”.

2. Resume the computer from sleep mode.

3. Register the headset using the computer.

1. Click the [Start] button, then [Settings].

2. Click [Devices].

3. Click the [Bluetooth] tab, then click the [Bluetooth] button to turn on the function.

4. Select [WH-1000XM2], then click [Pair].

If passkey input is required, input “0000.” The headset and computer are paired and connected. You will hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

1. Resume the computer from sleep mode.

2. Turn on the headset by pressing the power button for about 2 seconds.

3. Select the headset using the computer.

1. Right-click the volume icon on the Windows toolbar, then click [Playback devices].

2. Right-click [WH-1000XM2].

3. Click [Connect]. The connection is established.

You can connect the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset to 2 BLUETOOTH devices simultaneously, for example, one for listening to music (A2DP) and the other for making phone calls (HFP/HSP).

Connecting to a music player and a smartphone:

1. Pair the headset with both the music player and the smartphone.

2. Make a BLUETOOTH connection from the music player to the headset.

3. Make a BLUETOOTH connection from the smartphone to the headset.

Connecting to 2 Android smartphones:

1. Pair the headset with both smartphones.

2. Establish a BLUETOOTH connection with one of the smartphones.

3. On the connected smartphone, go to [Settings] – [Bluetooth] and tap the settings icon next to [WH-1000XM2]. Uncheck either [Phone audio] (HFP) or [Media audio] (A2DP). For example, uncheck [Phone audio] to use this phone for media only.

4. Terminate the BLUETOOTH connection from this smartphone.

5. Establish a BLUETOOTH connection with the other smartphone.

6. On this second smartphone, uncheck the function you did *not* uncheck in step 3. For example, uncheck [Media audio] to use this phone for calls only.

7. Re-establish the BLUETOOTH connection with the first smartphone. Both smartphones are now connected with one function each.

Note: When using Google Assistant, the headset cannot make a multi-point connection.

You can use the headset as noise canceling headphones by connecting a device via the supplied headphone cable and turning the headset on. This setup supports high-resolution audio playback.

1. Connect a playback device to the INPUT jack with the supplied headphone cable. Make sure you connect the L-shaped plug to the playback device.

Notes:

• You can enjoy music by connecting the cable even when the headset is turned off, but the noise canceling function will not be available.

• To enjoy high-resolution audio or use the noise canceling/Ambient Sound Mode, turn the headset on.

• The BLUETOOTH function cannot be used with the cable connected.

• You can operate the touch sensor control panel only for Quick Attention Mode. For volume, playback, pausing, etc., control with the connected device.

1. Connect the headset to a BLUETOOTH device.

2. Wear the headset correctly.

3. Play back music or video on the BLUETOOTH device.

4. Control the volume and playback using the touch sensor control panel on the right unit:

• Increase volume: Swipe up repeatedly. Hold your finger after swiping to change continuously.

• Decrease volume: Swipe down repeatedly. Hold your finger after swiping to change continuously.

• Play/Pause: Double-tap lightly (about 0.4-second interval).

• Next track: Swipe forward.

• Previous track: Swipe backward.

• Fast-forward: Swipe forward and hold. Release at the desired point.

• Fast-reverse: Swipe backward and hold. Release at the desired point.

The noise canceling circuit on the SONY WH-1000XM2 senses outside noise with built-in microphones and sends an equal-but-opposite canceling signal to the headset.

Note:

• The effect may not be pronounced in a very quiet environment.

• The function works primarily for noise in the low-frequency band. Although noise is reduced, it is not canceled completely.

• Do not cover the microphones of the headset with your hands, as this may impair the function.

1. Turn on the headset. The noise canceling function turns on automatically, and the green indicator next to the NC/AMBIENT button lights up.

2. To change the mode, press the NC/AMBIENT button repeatedly. Each press switches the function as follows, with voice guidance announcing the change:

• Ambient Sound Mode: ON (the yellow indicator lights up)

• Noise Canceling / Ambient Sound Mode: OFF (the green indicator flashes)

• Noise Canceling function: ON (the green indicator lights up)

This function optimizes the noise canceling function by detecting the shape of your face, your hairstyle, whether you are wearing glasses, and pressure changes in an airplane.

1. Wear the headset when it is turned on.

2. Press and hold the NC/AMBIENT button until you hear the voice guidance “Optimizer start” (for about two seconds).

While optimizing, you will hear test sounds. When the process is finished, you will hear the voice guidance “Optimizer finished”.

This function temporarily turns down music, call sound, and ringtone to allow ambient sound to be heard easily, which is useful for listening to announcements.

To activate the Quick Attention Mode:

Touch the whole touch sensor control panel of the right unit. The mode is active as long as you are touching the panel. The yellow indicator next to the NC/AMBIENT button will flash quickly.

To deactivate the Quick Attention Mode:

Move your hand off the touch sensor control panel of the right unit.

The SONY WH-1000XM2 headset supports the following 5 codecs for music playback via an A2DP connection:

• SBC (Subband Codec): The standard audio coding technology used by all BLUETOOTH devices.

• AAC (Advanced Audio Coding): Mainly used by Apple products, providing higher sound quality than SBC.

• aptX: Used by some Android smartphones, providing higher sound quality than SBC.

• aptX HD: Used by some Android smartphones, providing higher sound quality than aptX.

• LDAC: A Sony-developed technology for transmitting High-Resolution (Hi-Res) Audio content over BLUETOOTH.

1. Connect the headset to a smartphone or mobile phone beforehand.

2. When you hear a ring tone, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly (about 0.4-second interval) to receive the call.

3. To control the volume during the call, swipe up (increase) or down (decrease) on the touch sensor control panel on the right unit.

4. To end the call, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly again.

1. Connect the headset to a smartphone or mobile phone beforehand.

2. Operate your smartphone or mobile phone to make a call. The dial tone will be heard from the headset.

3. Control the volume by operating the touch sensor control panel on the right unit.

4. To end the call, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly.

The available functions depend on the profile (HFP or HSP) supported by your phone.

Supported profile: HFP (Hands-free Profile)

• During standby/music playback: Hold your finger to the touch sensor control panel to start the voice dial function or activate Google App/Siri.

• Outgoing call: Double-tap lightly to cancel an outgoing call. Hold your finger to switch the call device between the headset and the smartphone.

• Incoming call: Double-tap lightly to answer. Hold your finger to reject.

• During call: Double-tap lightly to finish. Hold your finger to switch the call device between the headset and the smartphone.

Supported profile: HSP (Headset Profile)

• Outgoing call: Double-tap lightly to cancel an outgoing call (*).

• Incoming call: Double-tap lightly to answer.

• During call: Double-tap lightly to finish a call (*).

(*) Some devices may not support this function.

This feature is available when the headset software is version 2.0.0 or later, and the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is version 3.1.0 or later.

Compatible smartphones:

• Smartphones with Android 5.0 or later.

• iPhone/iPod touch (requires installation of the Google Assistant application).

Setup:

1. If using an iPhone/iPod touch, turn Google Assistant on in its application.

2. Open the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app and set the NC/AMBIENT button as the Google Assistant button.

Usage:

• Press and hold the NC/AMBIENT button to input a voice command.

• Press once to read out notifications.

• Press twice to cancel the voice command.

1. On your iPhone, go to [Settings] – [Siri] to turn Siri on.

2. Connect the headset to the iPhone via BLUETOOTH.

3. When the iPhone is in standby or playing music, hold your finger to the touch sensor control panel to activate Siri. You will hear a start-up sound.

4. Make a request to Siri through the headset’s microphone.

5. To continue a request, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly before Siri is deactivated.

Note: Siri cannot be activated by saying “Hey Siri” through the headset’s microphone.

When you connect a smartphone with the app installed to your SONY WH-1000XM2, you can do the following:

• Display the remaining battery of the headset

• Display the BLUETOOTH connection codec

• Turn noise canceling on/off

• Use auto adjustment of the noise canceling function by behavior recognition

• Set the Ambient Sound mode

• Set the NC Optimizer function

• Control the auditory localization

• Select the sound effect mode (VPT)

• Select the Equalizer setting

• Switch the sound quality mode by setting the BLUETOOTH connection mode

• Set the DSEE HX (completion for high-range sound) function

• Check the headset’s status of connection/settings

• Check the software version of the headset

• Update the software of the headset

• Change the function of the NC/AMBIENT button

• Charge the battery of the headset.

• The headset cannot be turned on while charging the battery. Remove the micro-USB cable from the headset, and then turn on the headset again.

• Check that you are using the micro-USB cable supplied.

• Check that the micro-USB cable is connected to the headset and the computer firmly.

• Check that the computer is turned on.

• Check that the computer is not in standby, sleep or hibernation mode.

• When using Windows 8.1, update using Windows Update.

• Set the headset to the “Priority on stable connection” mode using the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

• Remove any obstacles between the antenna of the BLUETOOTH device to be connected and the built-in antenna of the headset. The antenna is located in the left earcup.

• BLUETOOTH communications may be disabled, or noise or audio dropout may occur under the following conditions:

• There is a human body between the headset and the BLUETOOTH device. This can be improved by placing the BLUETOOTH device facing the antenna of the headset.

• There is an obstacle, such as metal or a wall, between the headset and the BLUETOOTH device.

• A device using 2.4 GHz frequency, such as a Wi-Fi device, cordless telephone, or microwave oven, is in use near the headset. Move the headset at least 10 m (30 feet) away from the Wi-Fi device or turn the Wi-Fi device off.

• If you enjoy music with your smartphone, the situation may be improved by shutting down unnecessary apps or restarting your smartphone.

• Make sure that the noise canceling function is turned on (the indicator (green) next to NC/AMBIENT button lights up).

• Adjust the earpad position to fit your ears.

• The noise canceling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, and near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.

• Bring the headset and the BLUETOOTH device within 1 m (3 feet) from each other.

• When pairing a second or subsequent device, you must manually enter pairing mode. Press and hold the power button of the headset for more than 7 seconds to enter pairing mode.

• After initializing or repairing the headset, pairing information remaining on your iPhone or other device may prevent successful pairing. In this case, delete the pairing information of the headset from the device, and then pair them again.

• Reset the headset. Pairing information is not deleted by this operation.

• If you cannot use the headset even after resetting it, initialize the headset.

If the headset cannot be turned on, or if it cannot be operated even when it is turned on, follow these steps:

1. Connect the headset to a booted computer using the supplied micro-USB cable.

2. Press the power button and the NC/AMBIENT button simultaneously. The headset will be reset.

Pairing information is not deleted during a reset. To charge the headset after resetting, disconnect and reconnect the micro-USB cable.

This operation resets volume settings and deletes all pairing information.

1. Disconnect the micro-USB cable and turn off the headset.

2. Press and hold the power button and the NC/AMBIENT button simultaneously for more than 7 seconds.

The indicator (blue) will flash 4 times, and the headset will be reset to factory settings. All pairing information is deleted. After initializing, you will need to delete the pairing information for the headset from any connected devices and then pair them again.
