The SONY WH-1000XM2 headset uses BLUETOOTH® wireless technology, allowing you to listen to music or make phone calls wirelessly.

Listening to music

You can receive audio signals from a smartphone or music player to enjoy music wirelessly.

Talking on the phone

You can make and receive a call with your hands free, while leaving your smartphone or mobile phone in your bag or pocket.

You will hear the following voice guidance from your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset in various situations:

• When powering on: “Power on”

• When powering off: “Power off”

• When entering pairing mode: “BLUETOOTH pairing”

• When establishing a BLUETOOTH connection: “BLUETOOTH connected”

• When disconnecting a BLUETOOTH connection: “BLUETOOTH disconnected”

• When checking the remaining battery charge: “Battery level high” / “Battery level medium” / “Battery level low”

• When automatically turning off due to the low battery condition: “Please recharge headset”

• When turning on the noise canceling function: “Noise canceling”

• When turning on the Ambient Sound Mode: “Ambient sound”

• When turning off the noise canceling function and the Ambient Sound Mode: “Off”

• When starting the NC Optimizer: “Optimizer start”

• When the NC Optimizer is finished: “Optimizer finished”

After opening the package for your SONY WH-1000XM2, check that all of the following items are included:

When you are finished using the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset, fold it and put it in the supplied carrying case. The earcups should be folded inwards and rotated to lie flat inside the case.

To store the plug adaptor for in-flight use, put it in the holder inside the carrying case.

The parts and controls of the SONY WH-1000XM2 are located as follows:

1. L mark & Tactile dot: Located on the left unit. The tactile dot helps identify the left side by touch.

2. Built-in antenna: A BLUETOOTH antenna is built into the headset.

3. N-mark: Located on the left unit for NFC connections.

5. Slider: Slide to adjust the length of the headband.

7. Microphone: Picks up your voice for calls and ambient noise for noise canceling. Both left and right units have microphones.

8. R mark: Located on the right unit.

11. Indicator (green/yellow): Shows the status of noise canceling (green) or Ambient Sound Mode (yellow).

You can check the status of your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset by its indicators. (Blue: On, Red: On, Green: On, Yellow: On, -: Off)

Indicator (blue/red) next to the power button:

• Turning on: Blue flashes two times.

• Turning off: Blue lights for about two seconds.

BLUETOOTH status indication:

• Pairing mode: Alternating flashes of red and blue.

• Not connected: Blue flashes at about one-second intervals.

• Connection process completed: Blue flashes quickly for about five seconds.

• Connected: Blue flashes at about five-second intervals.

• Incoming call: Blue flashes quickly.

• Initialization completed: Blue flashes four times.

Indicator (red) next to the micro-USB port (Remaining battery charge):

• High: Red flashes three times.

• Medium: Red flashes two times.

• Low (needs to charge): Red flashes once.

• While charging: Red light is on steadily.

Indicator next to the NC/AMBIENT button:

• Noise canceling on (green): Green light is on steadily.

• Noise canceling off (green): Green light flashes.

• Ambient Sound Mode – Normal mode (yellow): Yellow light is on steadily.

• Ambient Sound Mode – Voice mode (yellow): Yellow light flashes.

• Ambient Sound Mode – Quick Attention Mode (yellow): Yellow light flashes quickly.

To charge your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset, follow these steps:

1. Connect the supplied micro-USB cable to the headset’s micro-USB port.

2. Connect the other end of the micro-USB cable to a booted computer.

The indicator (red) on the headset will light up. Charging is completed in about 4 hours, and the indicator will go off automatically. After charging is complete, disconnect the micro-USB cable.

Hint: You can use the headset with the supplied headphone cable even while it is charging. If charging starts while the headset is turned on, it will turn off automatically.

The available operating times for the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset on a fully-charged battery vary based on usage. About 70 minutes of music playback is possible after 10 minutes of charging.

You can check the remaining battery charge of your SONY WH-1000XM2 in a few ways:

• Using the headset buttons: When you turn on the headset or press the power button while it is on, the indicator (blue) flashes twice, then the indicator (red) flashes to indicate the remaining charge. You will also hear a voice guidance.

– 3 red flashes: High “Battery level high”

– 2 red flashes: Medium “Battery level medium”

– 1 red flash: Low (needs to charge) “Battery level low”

• When the battery is almost empty: The indicator turns red. The headset will sound a warning beep, you will hear the voice guidance “Please recharge headset,” and then it will turn off automatically.

• Using an iPhone or iPod touch: When connected to an iPhone or iPod touch (iOS 5.0 or later) supporting HFP, an icon indicating the remaining battery charge will appear on the screen.

To charge your SONY WH-1000XM2 via USB, you can use either a USB AC adaptor or a Personal Computer.

USB AC adaptor:

Use a commercially-available USB AC adaptor capable of feeding in 1.5 A or 0.5 A. The charging time will be shorter with a 1.5 A adaptor.

Personal Computer (As of August 2017):

A Personal Computer with a pre-installed compatible operating system and a USB port is required.

To turn on the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset:

Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds until the indicator (blue) flashes.

To turn off the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset:

Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds until the indicator (blue) turns off.

By touching the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset with an NFC-compatible smartphone, the headset turns on automatically, pairs, and establishes a BLUETOOTH connection. Follow these steps:

1. Unlock the screen of your smartphone if it is locked.

2. On your smartphone, go to [Setting] – [More] and ensure the NFC function is turned on.

3. Touch the N-Mark on the headset with your smartphone. Keep them touching until the smartphone reacts. Refer to your smartphone’s instructions for the designated NFC location.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions on your smartphone to complete the pairing and connection. When connected, the blue indicator on the headset starts flashing slowly, and you will hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

You can disconnect your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset from a connected smartphone by touching the headset with it again.

1. Unlock the screen of the smartphone if it is locked.

2. Touch the smartphone on the N-Mark of the headset. You will hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH disconnected”.

Note: After disconnection, if no operation is performed for about 5 minutes, the headset turns off automatically.

To pair and connect your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset with an Android smartphone for the first time, follow these steps:

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset:

– If it’s the first time pairing after purchase or initialization, the headset enters pairing mode automatically when turned on.

– For a second or subsequent device, press and hold the power button for about 7 seconds until the indicator flashes blue and red alternately. You will hear “BLUETOOTH pairing”.

2. Unlock the screen of your Android smartphone.

3. On the smartphone, select [Setting] – [Bluetooth] and turn on the BLUETOOTH function.

4. In the list of available devices, touch [WH-1000XM2].

5. If a passkey is required, enter “0000”.

The headset and smartphone will pair and connect. You will hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

1. Unlock the screen of your Android smartphone.

2. Turn on the headset. Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds. The blue indicator will flash. You will hear “Power on”.

3. If the headset automatically connects to the last connected device, you will hear “BLUETOOTH connected”. Check the connection status on your smartphone.

4. If not connected, display the paired devices on your smartphone by going to [Setting] – [Bluetooth].

5. Touch [WH-1000XM2] from the list to establish the connection. You will hear “BLUETOOTH connected”.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset:

– If pairing for the first time after purchase or initialization, the headset enters pairing mode automatically when turned on.

– For a second or subsequent device, press and hold the power button for about 7 seconds until the indicator flashes blue and red alternately. You will hear “BLUETOOTH pairing”.

2. Unlock the screen of your iPhone.

3. On the iPhone, select [Settings] and then touch [Bluetooth] to turn the function on.

4. In the list of devices, touch [WH-1000XM2].

5. If a passkey is required, enter “0000”.

The headset and iPhone will pair and connect. You will hear the voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

1. Unlock the screen of your iPhone.

2. Turn on the headset. Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds. The blue indicator will flash. You will hear “Power on”.

3. If the headset automatically connects to the last connected device, you will hear “BLUETOOTH connected”. Check the connection status on your iPhone.

4. If not connected, display the paired devices on your iPhone by going to [Settings] – [Bluetooth].

5. Touch [WH-1000XM2] from the list to establish the connection. You will hear “BLUETOOTH connected”.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset by pressing and holding the power button for about 7 seconds until the indicator flashes blue and red alternately. You will hear “BLUETOOTH pairing”.

2. On your computer, click the [Start] button, then [Settings].

3. Click [Devices].

4. Click the [Bluetooth] tab, and turn on the BLUETOOTH function.

5. Select [WH-1000XM2] from the list of devices, then click [Pair].

6. If a passkey is required, enter “0000”. The headset and computer will pair and connect, and you will hear “BLUETOOTH connected”.

1. Resume the computer from sleep mode.

2. Turn on your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset. It may connect automatically to the last connected device. You will hear “BLUETOOTH connected”.

3. If it does not connect automatically, select the headset using the computer:

a. Right-click the volume icon on the Windows toolbar, then click [Playback devices].

b. Right-click [WH-1000XM2]. If it is not displayed, right-click on the [Sound] screen and select [Show Disabled Devices].

c. Click [Connect]. The connection will be established.

You can use your SONY WH-1000XM2 as wired headphones by connecting a device via the supplied headphone cable. This also allows you to use them as noise-canceling headphones if you turn the headset on.

1. Connect the L-shaped plug of the headphone cable to your playback device.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the INPUT jack on the headset.

Notes:

• You can enjoy music with the cable even when the headset is turned off, but the noise canceling function will not be available.

• To enjoy high-resolution audio or use the noise canceling function, turn the headset on.

• The BLUETOOTH function cannot be used when the cable is connected.

• The touch sensor control panel can only be used for Quick Attention Mode. Volume and playback must be controlled from the connected device.

1. Connect the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset to a BLUETOOTH device.

2. Wear the headset, adjusting the headband for a comfortable fit.

3. Play music or video on the BLUETOOTH device.

4. Use the touch sensor control panel on the right earcup to control audio:

• Play/Pause: Double-tap lightly (about 0.4-second interval).

• Next track: Swipe forward.

• Previous track: Swipe backward.

• Fast-forward: Swipe forward and hold.

• Fast-reverse: Swipe backward and hold.

• Increase volume: Swipe up repeatedly. Hold your finger after swiping to continue increasing the volume.

• Decrease volume: Swipe down repeatedly. Hold your finger after swiping to continue decreasing the volume.

An alarm sounds when the volume reaches the maximum or minimum.

The noise canceling circuit on the SONY WH-1000XM2 senses outside noise with built-in microphones and sends an equal-but-opposite canceling signal to the headset, reducing ambient noise.

To use the noise canceling function:

1. Turn on the headset. You will hear “Power on”. The noise canceling function turns on automatically, and the green indicator next to the NC/AMBIENT button lights up.

To turn off the noise canceling function:

Press the NC/AMBIENT button repeatedly. Each press cycles through the modes: Ambient Sound Mode ON (yellow light), Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound OFF (green light flashes), and Noise Canceling ON (green light). You will hear voice guidance for each switch.

The NC (Noise Canceling) Optimizer function on your SONY WH-1000XM2 optimizes the noise canceling effect by detecting your face shape, hairstyle, whether you are wearing glasses, and pressure changes in an airplane.

1. Wear the headset when it is turned on.

2. Press and hold the NC/AMBIENT button for about two seconds until you hear the voice guidance “Optimizer start”.

While optimizing, you will hear test sounds. When the process is finished, you will hear the voice guidance “Optimizer finished”.

It is recommended to run the NC Optimizer when you first use the headset, if your wearing condition changes (e.g., hairstyle change, remove glasses), or when the atmospheric pressure changes (e.g., during a flight).

The Quick Attention Mode on your SONY WH-1000XM2 allows you to quickly hear ambient sound, such as announcements, without removing the headphones. This function turns down music, call sound, and ringtones.

To activate the Quick Attention Mode:

Touch the entire surface of the touch sensor control panel on the right earcup with your hand. The mode is active as long as you are touching the panel. The yellow indicator next to the NC/AMBIENT button will flash quickly.

To deactivate the Quick Attention Mode:

Move your hand off the touch sensor control panel.

The SONY WH-1000XM2 headset supports the following 5 codecs for music playback via an A2DP BLUETOOTH connection:

• SBC (Subband Codec): The standard audio coding technology used by all BLUETOOTH devices.

• AAC (Advanced Audio Coding): Mainly used by Apple products like iPhones, providing higher sound quality than SBC.

• aptX: Used by some Android smartphones, providing higher sound quality than SBC.

• aptX HD: Used by some Android smartphones, providing higher sound quality than aptX.

• LDAC: An audio coding technology developed by Sony that enables the transmission of High-Resolution (Hi-Res) Audio content over a BLUETOOTH connection.

When music in one of these codecs is transmitted from a connected device, the headset automatically switches to that codec to play the music.

First, ensure your SONY WH-1000XM2 is connected to your smartphone via BLUETOOTH with HFP or HSP profile.

Receiving a call:

When you hear a ring tone, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly (about 0.4-second interval) to receive the call.

To end the call, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly again.

Making a call:

1. Operate your smartphone to make a call. A dial tone will be heard from the headset.

2. To end the call, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly.

Volume control during a call:

Swipe up or down on the touch sensor control panel to adjust the volume.

The touch sensor control panel on your SONY WH-1000XM2 provides the following functions for phone calls when connected via HFP (Hands-free Profile):

During standby/music playback:

• Activate voice dial/assistant: Hold your finger to the touch sensor control panel to start the voice dial function or activate the Google App or Siri.

For an outgoing call:

• Cancel call: Double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly.

For an incoming call:

• Answer call: Double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly.

• Reject call: Hold your finger to the touch sensor control panel.

During a call:

• End call: Double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly.

• Switch call device: Hold your finger to the touch sensor control panel to switch the call between the headset and the smartphone.

If your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset does not operate properly, try the following steps:

1. Reset the headset. This operation does not delete pairing information. If the headset cannot be turned on or operated, connect it to a booted computer with the micro-USB cable, then press the power button and the NC/AMBIENT button simultaneously. The headset will reset.

2. Initialize the headset. If resetting does not solve the problem, you can initialize the headset to restore factory settings. This will delete all pairing information. Disconnect the micro-USB cable, turn off the headset, then press and hold the power button and the NC/AMBIENT button simultaneously for more than 7 seconds. The blue indicator will flash 4 times.

If the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset does not function as expected, try the following steps to resolve the issue.

• Find the symptoms of the issue in the Troubleshooting section of this Help Guide, and try any corrective actions listed.

• Connect the headset to a computer to charge the battery. You may be able to resolve some issues by charging the battery.

• Reset the headset.

• Initialize the headset. This operation resets volume settings, etc., and deletes all pairing information.

If the operations above do not work, consult your nearest Sony dealer.

If your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset is not turning on, please try the following:

• Charge the battery of the headset.

• The headset cannot be turned on while it is charging. Remove the micro-USB cable from the headset, and then try turning on the headset again.

If your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset is not charging, please check the following:

• Check that you are using the micro-USB cable supplied.

• Check that the micro-USB cable is connected to the headset and the computer firmly.

• Check that the computer is turned on.

• Check that the computer is not in standby, sleep or hibernation mode.

• When using Windows 8.1, update using Windows Update.

Sound skipping on your SONY WH-1000XM2 can be caused by several factors. Try the following solutions:

• Set the headset to the “Priority on stable connection” mode using the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

• Remove any obstacles between the antenna of the BLUETOOTH device and the built-in antenna of the headset (located in the left earcup).

• BLUETOOTH communications can be affected by:

– A human body between the devices. Try positioning the BLUETOOTH device to face the headset’s antenna.

– Obstacles like metal or walls.

– Devices using 2.4 GHz frequency (Wi-Fi, cordless phones, microwaves) nearby. Move the headset at least 10 m (30 feet) away from such devices, or turn them off.

• If you are using a smartphone, try shutting down unnecessary apps or restarting your smartphone.

If you find the noise canceling effect on your SONY WH-1000XM2 is not sufficient, please check the following:

• Make sure that the noise canceling function is turned on (the green indicator next to the NC/AMBIENT button should be lit).

• Adjust the earpad position to ensure a proper seal around your ears.

• The noise canceling function is most effective in low-frequency ranges like airplanes, trains, and offices. It is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.

If you are unable to pair your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset, try these steps:

• Bring the headset and the BLUETOOTH device within 1 m (3 feet) of each other.

• Ensure the headset is in pairing mode. For a second device, press and hold the power button for more than 7 seconds until the indicator flashes blue and red.

• If you have initialized or repaired the headset, pairing information may still exist on your iPhone or other device. Delete the pairing information for the headset from your device’s BLUETOOTH settings, and then try pairing them again.

If you are having trouble connecting your SONY WH-1000XM2 via NFC, check the following:

• Keep the smartphone close to the headset until it reacts. If it fails, move the smartphone slowly over the N-Mark on the headset.

• Check that the NFC function on your smartphone is enabled.

• If your smartphone is in a case, remove it.

• You cannot use NFC to connect while the headset battery is charging. Finish charging first.

• You cannot use NFC when the headphone cable is connected to the INPUT jack. Remove the headphone cable.

If the BLUETOOTH range seems short or sound is skipping on your SONY WH-1000XM2, consider the following:

• Set the headset to the “Priority on stable connection” mode in the app.

• Remove any obstacles between the antenna of your BLUETOOTH device and the headset’s built-in antenna (located in the left earcup).

• Interference may occur if there is a human body, metal, or a wall between the devices. Try repositioning your BLUETOOTH device.

• Devices using the 2.4 GHz frequency, like Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, or microwave ovens, can cause interference. Move away from these devices or turn them off.

• If enjoying music from your smartphone, the situation may be improved by shutting down unnecessary apps or restarting your smartphone.

If you cannot hear callers through your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset, check the following:

• Check that both the headset and the connected device (i.e., smartphone) are turned on.

• Turn up the volume of both the headset and the connected device.

• Check that the output of the BLUETOOTH device is set to the headset.

• Ensure an HFP or HSP BLUETOOTH connection is active by operating the BLUETOOTH device.

• If you are listening to music, stop the playback and double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly to talk.

If your SONY WH-1000XM2 headset cannot be turned on, or if it cannot be operated even when turned on, you can reset it. This action will not delete pairing information.

1. Connect the headset to a booted computer using the supplied micro-USB cable.

2. Press the power button and the NC/AMBIENT button simultaneously.

The headset will be reset. To charge the headset after resetting, disconnect and reconnect the micro-USB cable.

If the SONY WH-1000XM2 headset does not operate correctly even after resetting, initialize it to restore factory settings. This will delete all pairing information and reset settings like volume adjustment.

1. Disconnect the micro-USB cable.

2. Turn off the headset.

3. Press and hold the power button and the NC/AMBIENT button simultaneously for more than 7 seconds.

The indicator (blue) will flash 4 times, and the headset will be reset to factory settings. After initializing, you will need to delete the pairing information from your connected devices and pair them again.
