You can start enjoying music on your SONY WALKMAN NW-E393 in three simple steps. Be sure to charge the battery before using it for the first time.

1. Connect your Walkman to a computer. You can charge the battery by connecting your Walkman via a USB connection to a computer that is turned on and running.

2. Import music to your computer and transfer the music to your Walkman.

For Windows users:

– It is recommended to install the latest version of Music Center for PC. You can transfer music that you have imported from CDs to your Walkman.

– You can also transfer music by drag-and-drop directly from Windows Explorer to your Walkman.

For Mac users:

– It is recommended to install the latest version of Content Transfer. You can transfer music and playlists that are managed with iTunes to your Walkman with an easy operation.

– You can also transfer music by drag-and-drop directly from the Finder to your Walkman.

3. Enjoy your music! Connect the headphones, unlock the HOLD function, and turn on your Walkman. Then simply select the music you want to listen to to start playback.

The SONY WALKMAN NW-E393 has the following parts and controls:

1. BACK/HOME button: Press to go up one list screen level or to return to the previous menu. Press and hold to display the Home menu.

2. 5-way button: Press the center button to start playback. Press the up/down/left/right marks to navigate through on-screen menus. There is a tactile dot on the center button to help you operate without looking.

3. Headphone jack: Insert the headphone plug until it clicks into place. Sound will be impaired if the headphones are not connected properly.

4. USB jack: Connect the supplied USB cable or other accessories that support microUSB.

5. Display: The screen for viewing menus and content.

6. VOL (Volume) +/- button: Press to adjust the volume. There is a tactile dot on the + button.

7. HOLD switch: Slide this switch to protect your Walkman against accidental operation. Slide it in the direction of the arrow to disable all operation buttons. Slide it to the opposite position to release the HOLD function.

8. OPTION/POWER button: Press to display the option menu. Press and hold to turn your Walkman on or off.

9. RESTART button: Press this button with a small pin to restart your Walkman.

10. Strap hole: Use to attach a strap (not supplied).

To turn the power on:

1. Press and hold the OPTION/POWER button.

2. If the HOLD function is active, slide the HOLD switch to unlock the Walkman when you want to operate it.

Note: If there is no operation for an extended period, your Walkman will turn off automatically. If there is no operation, the screen will turn off; to turn it back on, press the OPTION/POWER button.

To turn the power off:

1. Press and hold the OPTION/POWER button. [POWER OFF] will appear, and the device will power down.

Note: If there is no operation for an extended period, your Walkman will turn off automatically.

The HOLD switch prevents buttons from being pressed accidentally.

1. Slide the HOLD switch in the direction of the arrow. The HOLD function is now enabled, and all operation buttons are disabled.

To release the HOLD function, slide the switch to the opposite position. A lock icon will flash at the top of the screen if buttons are pressed while the HOLD function is enabled.

Charge your Walkman by connecting it to a computer.

1. Connect your Walkman to a running computer via the supplied USB cable.

2. The battery status icon will show when charging is complete.

3. Disconnect your Walkman from the computer when charging is complete.

Note: You cannot operate your Walkman when it is connected to a computer. If you charge the Walkman when it has not been used for a long time, the computer may not recognize it initially. It should start operating normally after charging for about 10 minutes.

Using the Home Menu:

The Home menu is the starting point for all applications.

1. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears.

2. Use the 5-way button (up/down/left/right) to select the desired menu (e.g., [Music]).

3. Press the center of the 5-way button to confirm your selection.

4. Continue using the 5-way button to navigate through subsequent menus and make selections.

Using the Option Menu:

The Option menu allows you to change settings for the current function.

1. While your Walkman is in use (for example, on the music playback screen), press the OPTION/POWER button.

2. Use the 5-way button to select the desired menu item (e.g., [Play Mode]).

3. Press the center of the 5-way button to confirm.

To dismiss the option menu, press the BACK/HOME button.

Restarting your Walkman:

If operations become unstable, try restarting. This will not delete any data or reset any settings.

1. Disconnect the Walkman from your computer and ensure no music is playing.

2. Press the RESTART button on the back of the device with a pen or a paper clip.

Resetting to Factory Settings:

This will reset all settings to their defaults but will not delete content like music.

Formatting Memory:

This will initialize the Walkman and erase all content data, including songs and the supplied software installer. Be sure to back up important data first.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Important: Do not initialize (format) the memory of your Walkman using a computer. If you have, format it again using the Walkman’s format function.

You can add new features by installing the latest system software.

1. Download the update program to your computer from the customer support website for your area.

2. Connect your Walkman to your computer and start the update program.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the system software.

To confirm the current version information of your Walkman, select [Settings] > [Common Settings] > [Unit Information].

Using Music Center for PC (Windows):

1. Launch Music Center for PC on a computer where it is installed.

2. Connect the Walkman to the computer via USB.

3. Click the Walkman icon in the bottom left of Music Center for PC to open the device content list.

4. Select [Music Library] to see the content on your PC.

Playback Screen Operations:

3. To start a slideshow, press the play/pause button while viewing a photo. To stop, press it again.

Listening to FM Radio:

The headphone cord acts as the antenna, so headphones must be connected.

1. From the Home menu, select [FM Radio].

2. Press the right/left side of the 5-way button to tune to the desired frequency.

3. To automatically search for and save stations, open the option menu and select [Auto Preset] > [Yes].

4. To turn off the FM radio, press the BACK/HOME button.

If your Walkman does not function as expected, try the following steps to resolve the issue:

If your SONY WALKMAN NW-E393 does not operate or the power does not turn on, check the following:
