You can connect your SONY VPL-EW235 to a computer using one of the following methods. Ensure all equipment is powered off before connecting cables.

Method 1: Using an RGB Cable (for INPUT A/INPUT B)

1. Connect one end of the supplied Mini D-sub 15-pin cable to the RGB output connector on your computer.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the INPUT A or INPUT B connector on the projector.

3. For audio, connect a stereo mini plug audio cable (not supplied) from your computer’s audio output to the corresponding AUDIO input jack next to the INPUT A or B port on the projector.

Method 2: Using an HDMI Cable (for INPUT C)

1. Connect one end of an HDMI cable (not supplied) to the HDMI output connector on your computer.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the HDMI INPUT C connector on the projector. Audio is transmitted through the HDMI cable, so a separate audio cable is not needed.

Method 3: Using a USB Cable (for USB Display)

1. Connect a USB A-B cable (not supplied) from a USB (Type A) connector on your computer to the USB (Type B) connector on the projector.

To connect video equipment, use the appropriate cable for the output available on your device. Ensure all equipment is powered off before connecting.

For S-Video Connection:

1. Connect an S-video cable from the S-video output on your equipment to the S VIDEO IN port on the projector.

2. For audio, connect an audio cable (Phono plug x 2) from the audio outputs on your equipment to the L(MONO)-AUDIO/R input jacks on the projector.

For Composite Video Connection:

1. Connect a video cable (phono plug) from the video output on your equipment to the VIDEO IN jack on the projector.

2. For audio, connect an audio cable from the audio outputs on your equipment to the L(MONO)-AUDIO/R input jacks on the projector.

For Component Video Connection:

1. Use a Component – Mini D-sub 15-pin cable (not supplied) to connect the YPBPR output from your equipment to the INPUT A connector on the projector.

2. For audio, use an audio cable (Phono plug x 2 to stereo mini plug) to connect the audio outputs on your equipment to the AUDIO input jack for INPUT A.

For HDMI Connection:

1. Connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI output on your equipment to the HDMI INPUT C connector on the projector. This connection carries both video and audio.

Follow these steps to project an image:

1. Plug the AC power cord into the projector and then into a wall outlet.

2. Connect all your equipment (computer, DVD player, etc.) to the projector.

3. Press the I/O (On/Standby) key on the projector or remote to turn on the unit. The ON/STANDBY indicator will flash green and then light steadily green when ready.

4. Turn on the connected equipment (e.g., your computer).

5. Select the input source. Press the INPUT key on the projector or remote to display the input menu. Use the arrow keys to select the correct input and press ENTER, or press the INPUT key repeatedly to cycle through the inputs.

6. If projecting from a computer, switch your computer’s output to the external display. The method varies by computer (e.g., pressing Fn + F7).

7. Adjust the focus, size, and position of the image as needed.

To Adjust Focus:

• Rotate the Focus ring on the lens until the image appears sharp and clear.

To Adjust Size (Zoom):

• Rotate the Zoom ring on the lens to make the projected image larger or smaller.

To Adjust Position (Tilt):

1. Press and hold the foot adjust buttons located on the front underside of the projector.

2. Lift the front of the projector to adjust the vertical angle of the image.

3. Release the foot adjust buttons to lock the position.

4. For fine-tuning, turn the front feet to precisely set the angle.

The SONY VPL-EW235 normally adjusts for keystone distortion automatically. If the screen is tilted or the auto-correction is not sufficient, you can set it manually.

1. Press the KEYSTONE key on the remote commander or navigate to “V Keystone” in the Installation menu.

2. Use the ▲/▼ arrow keys to adjust the shape of the image.

• Pressing ▲ makes the top of the image narrower.

• Pressing ▼ makes the bottom of the image narrower.

Please note that since keystone adjustment is an electronic correction, it may slightly degrade the image quality.

Standard Shutdown:

1. Press the I/O (On/Standby) key on the unit or the remote commander. A confirmation message will appear.

2. The projector will begin its shutdown process (cooling the lamp) and turn off. The ON/STANDBY indicator will flash green during cooling and then turn solid red when in standby.

3. Once the indicator is solid red and the cooling fan has stopped, you can unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet.

To turn off without a confirmation message:

• Press and hold the I/O key on the projector unit for a few seconds.

Follow these steps to use the projector’s menu system:

1. Press the MENU key on the remote or control panel to display the main menu.

2. Use the ▲/▼ keys to select a setting menu icon (e.g., Picture, Screen, etc.) and then press the ► key or ENTER key.

3. Use the ▲/▼ keys to highlight the specific setting item you want to adjust.

4. Press the ENTER key to select the item. Depending on the item, this may open a pop-up menu or an adjustment bar.

5. Use the arrow keys (▲/▼/◄/►) to change the setting or value. Press ENTER to confirm the new setting.

6. To go back to the previous screen, press the ◄ key or RETURN key.

7. Press the MENU key at any time to exit the menu system.

The Picture Menu is used to adjust the picture quality for each input signal. The available settings are:

The indicator lights on your projector show its operational status and alert you to any problems.

ON/STANDBY Indicator

• Lights in red: The projector is in Standby mode.

• Flashes in green: The projector is warming up after being turned on, or cooling down after being turned off.

• Lights in green: The projector’s power is on and it is ready to use.

• Lights in orange: The projector is in a power-saving mode (Lamp Cutoff) because no input signal is detected.

• Flashes in red (twice): The internal temperature is unusually high. Check for blocked ventilation holes or a clogged air filter.

• Flashes in red (six times): A general error has occurred. Unplug the AC power cord, wait for the indicator to go out, then plug it back in and turn the projector on again.

• Flashes in red (other number of flashes): An error has occurred. Consult with qualified Sony personnel.

LAMP/COVER Indicator

• Flashes in red (twice): The lamp cover is not attached securely. Attach it properly.

• Flashes in red (three times): The lamp temperature is unusually high. Turn off the power, wait for the lamp to cool, then turn the power on again. If the symptom persists, the lamp may be burnt out and need replacement.

If a message appears on the projected image, address the problem as follows:

If the “Please replace the Lamp” message appears, replace the lamp (LMP-E212, not supplied). Wait at least one hour after turning off the projector for the lamp to cool before starting.

1. Turn off the projector and disconnect the AC power cord from the wall outlet.

2. Once the projector is completely cool, use a screwdriver to loosen the screw securing the lamp cover on the top of the projector, and remove the cover.

3. Loosen the two screws on the lamp unit itself. They will not come out completely.

4. Pull the lamp straight out by its grab handle.

5. Insert the new lamp all the way in until it is securely in place.

6. Tighten the two screws on the new lamp unit.

7. Replace the lamp cover and tighten its screw.

8. Connect the AC power cord and turn on the projector.

9. Reset the lamp timer. Go to the Function Menu, select Lamp Timer Reset, press ENTER, and select “Yes” to confirm.

Clean the air filter when the “Please clean the filter” message appears on the screen to prevent overheating.

1. Turn off the projector and disconnect the AC power cord from the outlet.

2. Locate the air filter cover on the side of the projector.

3. Slide out and remove the air filter cover from the unit. The filter is attached to the inside of the cover.

4. Use a vacuum cleaner to gently clean the dust from the air filter and the cover.

5. Reattach the air filter cover to the unit, ensuring it clicks into place securely. The projector will not power on if the cover is not attached correctly.

If the projector is on but there is no image, try the following troubleshooting steps:

• Check Connections: Ensure that the connecting cable between your source device (computer, etc.) and the projector is firmly connected at both ends.

• Check Input Source: Press the INPUT key on the remote or projector to make sure the correct input source is selected.

• Check BLANK function: Press the BLANK key on the remote to make sure the picture has not been temporarily muted.

• Check Computer Output: If using a computer, make sure it is set to output the video signal to an external monitor. You may need to press a function key combination (like Fn + F7) to cycle through display modes.

• Check Application: If using “USB Display” or “Projector Station for Network Presentation,” ensure the application is running correctly on your computer.

• Check USB Device: If using the USB Media Viewer, ensure the USB memory device is compatible and properly inserted.

If you are having issues with image quality, check the following:

Image is dark or too bright:

• Adjust the “Brightness,” “Contrast,” and “Lamp Mode” settings in the Picture and Connection/Power menus.

• If the image is consistently dark and the lamp has been used for a long time, it may be nearing the end of its life. Check the “Lamp Timer” in the Information menu and replace the lamp if necessary.

Image is not clear:

• Adjust the focus ring on the lens until the image is sharp.

• If the lens appears to have condensation, leave the projector on for about two hours to allow it to clear.

Image is noisy:

• Check that the connecting cable to the external equipment is connected properly and securely.

The sound from the fan can become louder than normal under certain conditions to ensure proper cooling of the lamp and internal components. This is expected behavior in the following situations:

• When “Lamp Mode” is set to “High.”

• When the unit is used at a high altitude and “High Altitude Mode” is set to “On.”

• When the unit is used in a location with a high ambient temperature.

Additionally, if the ventilation holes are blocked by an object or if the air filter is clogged with dust, the internal temperature will rise, causing the fan to run at a higher, noisier speed. Ensure the ventilation holes are clear and clean the air filter regularly.

The SONY VPL-EW235 can display image files directly from a USB memory device using the USB Media Viewer feature. Supported formats are JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, and TIFF on a FAT-formatted USB drive.

1. Connect your USB memory device to the USB (Type A) connector on the projector.

2. Press the INPUT key and select “Type A USB” as the input source.

3. A screen showing the connected USB device will appear. Select the USB Memory device and press ENTER.

4. The image files in the folder will be displayed as a thumbnail list (Thumbnail Mode).

5. Use the arrow keys to select an image and press ENTER to view it in full screen (Display Mode).

While in thumbnail or display mode, you can access an option menu to start a slideshow, sort files, or rotate images.
