How do I know when to replace the batteries on my SONY TCM-200DV?
Replace the batteries with new ones when the BATT lamp dims or goes out.
After the batteries have been used for a long time, the tape may not move or the playback sound may distort. In such a case, replace the batteries. If you want to continue the operation even so, it may not be performed correctly. Be sure to replace the batteries as soon as possible.
What is the procedure for making a recording with the SONY TCM-200DV?
Follow these steps to record on your SONY TCM-200DV:
1. Insert a cassette with the side to be recorded facing towards the cassette lid.

3. For the SONY TCM-200DV only, set the VOR switch. Set to ON to start and stop recording automatically depending on the sound. For normal recording, set to OFF.
When the unit is sounded at close range, the built-in mic tends to pick up mechanical noise from the recorder. To reduce the noise, place the unit on a soft substance, or keep it away from the unit.
4. Press ● REC. (► PLAY is pressed automatically) and start recording.
At the end of the tape, recording stops and the ● REC button lifts off automatically.
To monitor the sound, connect an earphone (not supplied) to the EAR jack. You cannot adjust the monitoring volume.

The VOR (Voice Operated Recording) function on your SONY TCM-200DV starts and stops recording automatically, which saves valuable tape space. To use it, set the VOR switch to ON before you press ● REC.
If the sound to be recorded is too low, or if there is background noise, the VOR function may not work properly. In these situations, or for important recordings, set the VOR switch to OFF.

To prevent a tape from being accidentally erased, break out the cassette tab from side A or B. To reuse the tape for recording, cover the tab hole with adhesive tape.
How do I record using an external microphone with my SONY TCM-200DV?
Connect the external microphone to the MIC jack. A mini-plug type microphone with an impedance from 200 to 1,000 ohms can be used. When using a plug-in power type microphone, power to the microphone is supplied from the unit.
Note: When recording with an external microphone, the built-in microphone will not work properly due to the difference in impedance.
How do I record from another piece of equipment onto my SONY TCM-200DV?
Connect another equipment to the EAR jack via an audio connecting cord (not supplied).
How do I copy a tape from my SONY TCM-200DV to another recorder?

Are there any special considerations for using tapes longer than 90 minutes with the SONY TCM-200DV?
The use of cassettes longer than 90 minutes except Sony cassettes is not recommended except for long, continuous recording or playback. They are very thin, and tend to be stretched or get caught in the tape transport mechanism, which can cause malfunction of the unit or deterioration of sound.
How should I clean and maintain my SONY TCM-200DV?
To clean the tape heads and paths
Clean the tape heads, pinch roller and capstan with a cotton swab and cleaning fluid (available at an audio store) after every 10 hours of use.

Why does the sound drop out or have excessive noise during playback on my SONY TCM-200DV?
If the sound drops out or has excessive noise, consider the following causes:
• The volume is turned down completely.
• The batteries are weak.
• The unit is placed near an AC power source, a fluorescent lamp or a cellular phone.
• Dirty heads. See “Maintenance” for cleaning instructions.
• Poor-quality tape is being used. If the cassette was recorded on equipment with a dirty tape head, the sound of the original tape will not be good quality.
• Use of TYPE II (HIGH POSITION) tape or TYPE IV (METAL) tape.
What should I do if the sound is too fast or too slow during playback on my SONY TCM-200DV?
If the tape speed is too fast or too slow during playback, check these points:
• Improper setting of the PLAY MODE switch. Set the PLAY MODE switch to the same speed as that used for recording to play back the tape.

• Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, remove the batteries and have the unit checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
• Keep personal credit cards using magnetic coding or spring-wound watches, etc., away from the unit to prevent possible damage from the magnet used in the speaker.
