To prevent fire or shock hazards on the SONY STR-DE895, adhere to the following safety precautions:

1. Do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.

2. Do not cover the ventilation of the apparatus with newspapers, table-cloths, curtains, etc.

3. Do not place lighted candles on the apparatus.

4. Do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the apparatus.

5. Do not install the appliance in a confined space, such as a bookcase or built-in cabinet.

To connect antennas to the SONY STR-DE895:

1. FM Wire Antenna: Connect the supplied FM wire antenna to the FM 75Ω COAXIAL terminal. Be sure to fully extend the FM wire antenna and keep it as horizontal as possible.

2. AM Loop Antenna: Connect the supplied AM loop antenna to the AM terminals. Keep the AM loop antenna away from the receiver and other components to prevent noise pickup.

3. Grounding: Do not use the SIGNAL GND terminal for grounding the receiver.

Use audio cords (white for Left, red for Right) to connect components to the SONY STR-DE895:

Turntable: Connect the Output L/R jacks of the turntable to the PHONO IN L/R jacks on the receiver. If the turntable has a ground wire, connect it to the SIGNAL GND terminal.

CD Player: Connect the Output L/R jacks of the CD player to the CD/SACD IN L/R jacks on the receiver.

MD or Tape Deck: Connect the Output L/R jacks of the deck to the MD/TAPE IN L/R jacks, and connect the Input L/R jacks of the deck to the MD/TAPE OUT L/R jacks on the receiver.

You can connect video components using Audio/Video cords:

Satellite Tuner: Connect the Audio/Video Outputs of the tuner to the TV/SAT AUDIO IN and VIDEO IN jacks.

DVD Player: Connect the Audio/Video Outputs of the player to the DVD AUDIO IN and VIDEO IN jacks. If using Component Video, connect the Component Video Outputs (Y, B-Y, R-Y) to the COMPONENT VIDEO DVD IN jacks.

VCR: Connect the Audio/Video Outputs of the VCR to the VIDEO 1 or VIDEO 2 AUDIO IN and VIDEO IN jacks. For recording, connect the VIDEO 1 or VIDEO 2 AUDIO OUT and VIDEO OUT jacks to the VCR Inputs.

TV Monitor: Connect the MONITOR VIDEO OUT jack on the receiver to the Video Input on your TV. If using Component Video, use the COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT jacks.

Connect the digital output jacks of your DVD player, Satellite tuner, etc., to the receiver’s digital input jacks:

DVD Player: Connect the Coaxial Digital Output of the DVD player to the DVD COAXIAL IN jack on the receiver using a coaxial digital cord.

Satellite Tuner: Connect the Optical Digital Output of the tuner to the TV/SAT OPTICAL IN jack on the receiver using an optical digital cord.

MD/Tape Deck: Connect the Optical Digital Output of the deck to the MD/TAPE OPTICAL IN jack. For recording, connect the MD/TAPE OPTICAL OUT jack on the receiver to the Optical Digital Input of the deck.

CD/SACD: Connect the Optical Digital Output of the player to the CD/SACD OPTICAL IN jack.

Note: Insert optical digital cord plugs straight in until they click into place.

Connect speaker cords to the appropriate terminals on the SONY STR-DE895, matching positive (+) to positive and negative (–) to negative:

Front Speakers (A): Connect to SPEAKERS FRONT A terminals (L/R).

Front Speakers (B): Connect to SPEAKERS FRONT B terminals (L/R) if you have a second set.

Center Speaker: Connect to SPEAKERS CENTER terminals.

Surround Speakers: Connect to SPEAKERS SURROUND terminals (L/R).

Surround Back Speaker: Connect to the SPEAKERS SURROUND BACK terminals.

Active Subwoofer: Connect the input jack of the active subwoofer to the SUB WOOFER AUDIO OUT jack on the receiver using a monaural audio cord.

To avoid short-circuiting the speakers on the SONY STR-DE895:

1. Twist the stripped ends of the speaker cords about 10 mm (2/3 inch).

2. Make sure the stripped ends of each speaker cord do not touch another speaker terminal, the stripped end of another speaker cord, or the metal parts of the receiver.

3. Ensure stripped cords are fully attached and not touching the rear panel of the receiver.

If no sound is heard or the wrong speaker plays during a test tone, check for short circuits.

To clear the memory on the SONY STR-DE895:

1. Turn off the receiver.

2. Hold down the power button (I/O) for 5 seconds. “ENTER to Clear” appears in the display.

3. Press ENTER. “MEMORY CLEARING” will appear, followed by “MEMORY CLEARED!”.

This resets all settings, sound fields, and presets to factory defaults.

To adjust speaker parameters:

1. Press MAIN MENU repeatedly to select “SET UP”.

2. Press the arrow buttons (< / >) to select the parameter you want to adjust (e.g., FRONT SP, CTR SP, SUB WOOFER).

3. Turn the jog dial to select the setting you want (e.g., LARGE, SMALL, YES, NO).

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all necessary parameters.

1. Turn on the receiver and your TV.

2. Press TEST TONE on the remote.

3. You will hear the test tone from each speaker in sequence: Front (left) -> Center -> Front (right) -> Surround (right) -> Surround back -> Surround (left) -> Sub woofer.

4. Adjust the speaker level and balance using the LEVEL menu so the test tone sounds the same from each speaker.

5. Press TEST TONE again to turn off the test tone.

Press INPUT MODE to select the input mode for your digital components. Options include:

AUTO 2CH: Gives priority to digital signals when there are both digital and analog connections. If no digital signal is present, analog is selected.

COAX FIXED: Specifies the digital audio signals input to the DIGITAL COAXIAL input jacks.

OPT FIXED: Specifies the digital audio signals input to the DIGITAL OPTICAL input jacks.

ANALOG FIXED: Specifies the analog audio signals input to the AUDIO IN (L/R) jacks.

Press the DIMMER button repeatedly to adjust the brightness of the display. There are 3 steps available.

Press the 2CH button. The 2CH indicator lights up and “2CH STEREO” appears in the display. This mode outputs sound from the front left and right speakers only, downmixing multi-channel formats to 2 channels.

Press the MOVIE or MUSIC buttons repeatedly to select a pre-programmed sound field.

MOVIE: Selects fields like CINEMA ST.EX A, B, or C.

MUSIC: Selects fields like HALL, JAZZ CLUB, or LIVE CONCERT.

To decode automatically without added effects, press A.F.D. repeatedly to select “A.F.D. AUTO”.

Using the supplied remote:

1. Press TUNER repeatedly to select the FM or AM band.

2. Press D. TUNING.

3. Press the numeric buttons to enter the frequency (e.g., for FM 102.50 MHz, press 1 -> 0 -> 2 -> 5 -> 0).

If the entered numbers flash, the frequency is not used in your area or was entered incorrectly.

1. Turn INPUT SELECTOR to select FM or AM.

2. Tune in the station you want to preset.

3. Press MEMORY. “MEMORY” appears in the display.

4. Press PRESET TUNING + or – repeatedly to select a preset station number.

5. Press MEMORY again to store the station.

You can preset up to 30 FM or AM stations.

1. Select the station or component you want to name.

2. Press MAIN MENU repeatedly to select “CUSTOMIZE”.

3. Press the arrow buttons (< / >) to select “NAME? [XXXXXXXX]”.

4. Create an index name using the jog dial and arrow buttons (< / >). Turn the jog dial to select a character, then press the arrow buttons to move the cursor.

5. Press ENTER to store the name.

Press ALT, then press SLEEP on the remote while the power is on. Each press changes the display cyclically: 2:00:00 -> 1:30:00 -> 1:00:00 -> 0:30:00 -> OFF. The receiver will turn off automatically at the specified time.

1. Press MAIN MENU repeatedly to select “EQUALIZER”.

2. Press the arrow buttons (< / >) to select the parameter (BASS or TREBLE).

3. Turn the jog dial to adjust the level (dB).

To turn the equalizer on or off, select “EQUALIZER [XXX]” and use the jog dial to select “ON” or “OFF”.

1. Press AV I/O while pressing down USE MODE. The indicator lights.

2. Press the input selector button for the component you want to control (e.g., CD/SACD).

3. Press the numeric buttons to enter the numeric code corresponding to the component maker (consult the code tables in the manual).

4. Press ENTER. The indicator slowly flashes twice if verified.

5. Repeat for other components.

If there is no sound:

1. Check that speakers and components are connected securely.

2. Check that the receiver and components are turned on.

3. Ensure MASTER VOLUME is not set to “VOLUME MIN”.

4. Check that SPEAKERS (OFF/A/B/A+B) is not set to off and is set to the correct speaker system.

5. Press MUTING on the remote to cancel the muting function.

6. Ensure headphones are not connected.

7. If “PROTECTOR” flashes, a short circuit may have activated the protective device.

1. Check that speakers and components are connected securely.

2. Ensure connecting cords are away from transformers, motors, TV sets, or fluorescent lights.

3. Move the TV away from audio components.

4. Make sure the SIGNAL GND terminal is grounded (only when a turntable is connected).

5. Clean dirty plugs and jacks with a cloth moistened with alcohol.

Power Output and Total Harmonic Distortion: With 8 ohm loads, both channels driven, from 20 – 20,000 Hz; rated 100 watts per channel minimum RMS power, with no more than 0.09 % total harmonic distortion from 250 milliwatts to rated output.
