To prevent damage to your SONY HXR-MC2000E, do not hold the camcorder by the following parts:

• Lens hood

• Panel EVF block

• LCD panel

• Battery pack

• Microphone

• Viewfinder

Also, do not hold the camcorder by the jack covers.

The LCD screen and viewfinder are manufactured using extremely high-precision technology, so over 99.99% of the pixels are operational. However, there may be some tiny black points and/or bright points (white, red, blue, or green) that appear constantly on the screen. These points are normal results of the manufacturing process and do not affect the recording.

Important notes:

• Exposing the LCD screen, viewfinder, or lens to direct sunlight for long periods may cause malfunctions.

• Do not aim the camcorder at the sun. Doing so might cause it to malfunction. Take images of the sun only in low-light conditions, such as at dusk.

The main difference in specification between these models is the internal memory capacity:

• SONY HXR-MC2000E: 64 GB internal memory

• HXR-MC1500P: 32 GB internal memory

Follow these steps to attach the supplied microphone:

Step 1. Attach the wind screen to the microphone.

Step 2. Unlock the stopper of the microphone holder and open the cover.

Step 3. Align the convex part of the microphone with the concave part of the holder, then place the microphone into the holder. Be sure to align the triangle mark on the microphone and the line mark on the holder facing each other. Close the cover and lock the stopper securely.

Step 4. Turn the plug of the microphone counter-clockwise to 180 degrees and connect it to the Mic jack.

Attaching the eyecup:

Attach the eyecup by aligning it with the eyecup groove in the viewfinder. You can attach the eyecup facing either the right or left side. Ensure it is attached securely until it fits the corresponding part properly.

Attaching the lens hood:

Align the marks on the lens hood with those on the camcorder, and turn the lens hood in the direction of the arrow until it clicks into place.

To remove the Lens hood:

Turn the lens hood cover in the direction of the arrow as illustrated while pressing the lever on the lens hood cover.

Attaching the lens cap:

Attach the lens cap by pressing both knobs on its sides. To secure the lens cap to the camcorder, remove the grip belt and lead it through the attachment on the lens cap string. Then attach the grip belt to the camcorder again.

You can charge the “InfoLITHIUM” battery pack (L series) after attaching it to your SONY HXR-MC2000E. Follow these steps:

Step 1. Slide the POWER switch to OFF (CHG) (the default setting).

Step 2. Attach the battery pack to your camcorder by sliding it in the direction of the arrow while pressing it until it clicks.

Step 3. Connect the AC Adaptor to the DC IN jack of your camcorder. Be sure that the triangle mark on the DC plug is facing the triangle mark on your camcorder.

Step 4. Connect the AC Adaptor and the power cord (mains lead) to your camcorder and the wall outlet (wall socket).

The CHG (charge) lamp lights up, and charging starts. The CHG (charge) lamp turns off when the battery pack is fully charged.

Step 5. When the battery is charged, disconnect the AC Adaptor from the DC IN jack of your camcorder.

The approximate time in minutes required to fully charge a fully discharged battery pack is as follows. Times are measured with the camcorder at 25°C (77°F).

To remove the battery pack, first slide the POWER switch to OFF (CHG). Then, push the [BATT (battery) RELEASE] button and remove the battery pack.

Follow these steps to power on the camcorder and set the clock:

Step 1. Slide the POWER switch to ON while pressing the green button.

Step 2. Select the desired geographical area with the up/down arrows on the LCD screen, then touch [NEXT].

Step 3. Set [SUMMERTIME], date, and time, then touch [OK]. The clock starts.

To set the date and time again, touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [CLOCK/LANG] (under [GENERAL SET] category) → [CLOCK SET].

The LCD panel:

Open the LCD panel, then rotate it to the best angle for recording or playback. You can rotate it up to 90 degrees up, 180 degrees down, and 180 degrees forward toward the lens.

The viewfinder:

Pull out the LCD panel block to adjust its position, and rotate the viewfinder to the best angle. Use the viewfinder lens adjustment lever to make the picture clear for your eyesight.

Selecting the recording media for movies:

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [MEDIA SETTINGS] (under [MANAGE MEDIA] category) → [MOVIE MEDIA SET].

Step 2. Touch the desired recording media (Internal memory or Memory card).

Step 3. Touch [YES] → [OK].

Selecting the recording media for photos:

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [MEDIA SETTINGS] (under [MANAGE MEDIA] category) → [PHOTO MEDIA SET].

Step 2. Touch the desired recording media.

Step 3. Touch [YES] → [OK].

Only the following memory card types (Class 4 or faster) can be used with the SONY HXR-MC2000E:

• “Memory Stick PRO Duo” (Mark2) media

• “Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo” media

• SD memory cards

• SDHC memory cards

• SDXC memory cards

Operation with all memory cards is not assured. “Memory Stick PRO Duo” media up to 32 GB and SD memory cards up to 64 GB have been tested and proven to operate.

Step 1. Slide the POWER switch to ON while pressing the green button.

Step 2. Press the MODE button to light up the (Movie) lamp. The LCD screen will switch to movie recording mode with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Step 3. Press the START/STOP button on the handle or at the rear of the camcorder to begin recording. The on-screen indicator changes from [STBY] to [REC].

Step 4. To stop recording, press the START/STOP button again.

Step 1. Press the MODE button to turn on the (Photo) lamp. The LCD screen will switch to photo recording mode with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Step 2. Press the PHOTO button lightly to adjust the focus. A green circle will appear when focus is achieved.

Step 3. Press the PHOTO button fully to take the picture. When the focus indicator disappears, the photo is recorded.

By pressing the [AUTO] button, you can record images using the INTELLIGENT AUTO function. When you turn the camcorder toward the subject, the camcorder records using the optimum combination of three detection modes: Face detection, Scene detection, and Camera-shake detection. When the camcorder detects the subject, icons that correspond to the detected condition are displayed on the screen.

To cancel INTELLIGENT AUTO, press the [AUTO] button again. The detection mode icons will disappear, and you can record with your preferred settings.

You can select a recording mode to record high definition (HD) movies from 4 levels. In the default setting, [REC MODE] is set to [HD FH].

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [REC MODE] (under [SHOOTING SET] category).

Step 2. Touch a desired setting. If you want to record high-quality images, select the FX mode. If you want to record longer movies, select the HQ or LP mode.

Step 3. Touch [OK] → [X].

The available HD modes are:

• [HD FX] (AVC HD 24M (FX)) – Highest quality

• [HD FH] (AVC HD 17M (FH)) – Default setting

• [HD HQ] (AVC HD 9M (HQ))

• [HD LP] (AVC HD 5M (LP)) – Longest recording time

It is useful to assign a frequently used menu item to the RING. The following is an example when the [FOCUS] setting is assigned (the default setting).

Step 1. Press the MANUAL button to activate the manual adjustment mode. The setting mode switches between automatic and manual every time you press the MANUAL button.

Step 2. Rotate the RING to adjust the focus manually.

To assign a different function to the RING:

Step 1. Press and hold the MANUAL button for several seconds. The [RING SETTING] screen appears.

Step 2. Rotate the RING and select a menu item to be assigned (e.g., EXPOSURE, IRIS, SHUTTER SPEED, AE SHIFT, WB SHIFT).

Step 3. Press the MANUAL button.

Step 1. Slide the POWER switch to ON while pressing the green button.

Step 2. Press the (VIEW IMAGES) button. The VISUAL INDEX screen appears after a few seconds.

Step 3. To play back a movie, touch the movie thumbnail. To view a photo, touch the photo thumbnail.

During movie playback, a control panel appears on the screen. You can use it to stop, pause, fast-forward, rewind, and adjust the volume.

You can use several index types to find your desired images:

• Date Index: Search for images by the date they were recorded. In the VISUAL INDEX screen, touch the icon at the top left → [DATE INDEX]. Select the desired date.

• Film Roll Index: Movies are divided by a set time, and the first scene of each division is displayed as a thumbnail. In the VISUAL INDEX screen, touch the icon at the top left → [FILM ROLL]. Select a movie, then select the thumbnail of the scene you want to play.

• Face Index: Face images detected during movie recording are displayed. You can play back the movie from the scene with the selected face. In the VISUAL INDEX screen, touch the icon at the top left → [FACE]. Select a movie, then select the face image to start playback from that scene.

The Highlight Playback function selects scenes at random, puts them together, and plays them back as a digest with music and visual effects.

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [HIGHLIGHT] (under [PLAYBACK] category).

Step 2. The settings for Highlight Playback appear. The playback will start after several seconds.

To change settings like the playback range or theme music, touch [HIGHLIGHT SET] before the playback starts.

Always use the supplied AC Adaptor for power when connecting to a TV.

Connecting to a High Definition (HD) TV:

• Using an HDMI cable (sold separately): Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI OUT jack on the camcorder and the HDMI IN jack on the TV for the best quality.

• Using a component video cable (sold separately) and the supplied A/V connecting cable: Connect the component cable to the COMPONENT OUT jacks on the camcorder and the Component IN jacks on the TV. Connect the red and white audio plugs from the A/V cable to the AUDIO OUT jacks on the camcorder and the Audio IN jacks on the TV.

Connecting to a Standard Definition (non-HD) TV:

• Using the supplied A/V connecting cable: Connect the yellow, red, and white plugs to the A/V OUT jack on the camcorder and the matching Video/Audio IN jacks on the TV.

After connecting, select the correct video input on your TV to view the playback from the camcorder.

You cannot restore images once they are deleted. Save important files beforehand.

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [DELETE] (under [EDIT] category).

Step 2. To delete movies, touch [HD DELETE] or [STD DELETE]. To delete photos, touch [PHOTO DELETE].

Step 3. Touch the movies or photos to be deleted to mark them with a checkmark.

Step 4. Touch [OK] → [YES] → [OK].

You can also choose to delete all images at once or all images recorded on a specific day from the menu in Step 2.

Insert a memory card into your camcorder before starting.

To dub movies:

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [MOVIE DUB] (under [EDIT] category).

Step 2. Touch the type of dubbing: [DUB by select] or [DUB by date].

Step 3. Select the movie(s) to be dubbed. Touch the movie to mark it with a checkmark.

Step 4. Touch [OK] → [YES] → [OK].

To copy photos:

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [PHOTO COPY] (under [EDIT] category).

Step 2. Touch the type of copying: [COPY by select] or [COPY by date].

Step 3. Select the photo(s) to be copied. Touch the photo to mark it with a checkmark.

Step 4. Touch [OK] → [YES] → [OK].

The Playlist is a list showing thumbnails of the movies that you have selected. The original movies are not changed.

Creating the Playlist:

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [PLAYLIST EDIT] (under [EDIT] category).

Step 2. Touch [HD ADD] or [STD ADD].

Step 3. Touch the movie(s) to be added to the Playlist. A checkmark will appear on the selected movies.

Step 4. Touch [OK] → [YES] → [OK].

Playing the Playlist:

Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [PLAYLIST] (under [PLAYBACK] category). Touch the movie you want to start playback from.

Step 1. Confirm that your camcorder is not connected to the computer.

Step 2. Turn on the computer and log on as an Administrator.

Step 3. Place the supplied CD-ROM in the disc drive of your computer. The installation screen appears.

Step 4. Click [Install].

Step 5. Select the country or region.

Step 6. Select the language for the application to be installed, then proceed to the next screen.

Step 7. Read the license agreement, select the option to agree, and then click [Next] → [Install].

Step 8. Turn on your camcorder, then connect it to the computer using the supplied USB cable.

Step 9. Touch the media type on the camcorder screen to make the computer recognize it.

Step 10. Click [Continue] on the computer screen.

Step 11. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step 1. Connect the AC Adaptor to your camcorder and the wall outlet.

Step 2. If the external media has its own AC power cable, connect it to a wall outlet.

Step 3. Connect the supplied USB Adaptor Cable to the external media.

Step 4. Connect the USB Adaptor Cable to the USB jack of your camcorder.

Step 5. If the [Create a new Image Database File.] screen appears, touch [YES]. The [EASY COPY] screen is displayed on the LCD screen.

Step 6. Touch [Copy.] on the camcorder screen. Movies and photos that have not yet been saved to external media will be copied.

Step 7. After the operation is completed, touch [OK] on the camcorder screen.

Step 1. Connect the AC Adaptor to your camcorder and a wall outlet.

Step 2. Turn on your camcorder, and connect the DVD writer to the USB jack of your camcorder with the USB cable of the DVD writer.

Step 3. Insert an unused disc into the DVD writer and close the tray. The [DISC BURN] screen appears on the camcorder screen.

Step 4. Press the (DISC BURN) button on the DVD writer. Movies from the internal memory that have not been saved will be recorded onto the disc.

Step 5. When finished, touch [OK] → [END] → [EJECT DISC] on the camcorder screen. Remove the disc.

Step 6. Touch [OK], then disconnect the USB cable.

If the power does not turn on, try the following solutions:

• Attach a charged battery pack to the camcorder.

• The plug of the AC Adaptor may have been disconnected from the wall outlet. Connect it securely to the wall outlet.

If the camcorder is unresponsive, try these steps:

• It takes a few seconds for the camcorder to be ready after power is turned on. This is normal.

• Disconnect the AC Adaptor or remove the battery pack, then reconnect it after about 1 minute.

• If the functions still do not work, press the RESET button using a pointed object. Note that pressing RESET will reset all settings, including the clock.

• If the temperature of the camcorder is extremely high or low, it may not operate due to protection features. If it’s hot, turn it off and let it cool. If it’s cold, take it to a warm place to acclimate before turning it on.

There are a few reasons why the power might turn off unexpectedly:

• If [A.SHUT OFF] is set to [ON], the camcorder will automatically turn off after about 30 minutes of inactivity in playback mode. You can change this setting or simply turn the power on again.

• The battery pack may be out of charge. Use the AC Adaptor or charge the battery pack.

A flashing CHG (charge) lamp indicates a charging error. The most common reasons are:

• The temperature of the battery pack is too high or too low for charging.

• The battery pack is not attached correctly. Re-attach it securely.

If the problem persists after checking these points, the battery pack may be damaged.

If the buttons do not appear on the touch panel, touch the LCD screen lightly. If the buttons disappear too quickly, set [DISPLAY SET] to [ON].

If the buttons do not work correctly or respond to the wrong area, you need to calibrate the touch panel:

Step 1. Touch (MENU) → [Show others] → [OTHER SETTINGS] (under [GENERAL SET] category) → [CALIBRATION].

Step 2. Touch the “×” displayed on the screen with the corner of a memory card or similar object 3 times as it moves.

This phenomenon occurs when recording images under a fluorescent lamp, sodium lamp, or mercury lamp. This is not a malfunction. It is caused by the interaction between the light frequency and the camera’s shutter speed. You can reduce this effect by manually adjusting the shutter speed in the menu.

If you are unable to play back images, check the following:

• Ensure you have selected the correct recording media for playback (Internal Memory or Memory Card).

• Ensure you have selected the correct image quality (HD or STD) for the movie you want to play back.

• Images recorded on other devices may not be compatible and cannot be played back on your SONY HXR-MC2000E.

• Photos cannot be played back if you have modified the files or folders on a computer.

If “PMB” cannot be installed:

• Check that your computer meets the environment and system requirements for installation.

If “PMB” does not work correctly:

• Quit the “PMB” software and restart your computer.

If the camcorder is not recognized by the computer:

• Disconnect all other USB devices from the computer except for the keyboard, mouse, and your camcorder.

• Disconnect the USB cable from both the computer and camcorder, restart the computer, and then reconnect the camcorder in the correct order.

If an error code beginning with C or E appears, check the following:

• C:04:xx – The battery pack is not an “InfoLITHIUM” L series battery pack, or the DC plug of the AC Adaptor is not connected securely. Use a proper battery pack or reconnect the AC Adaptor.

• C:06:xx – The battery pack temperature is high. Change the battery pack or place it in a cool place.

• C:13:xx / C:32:xx – Remove the power source (battery or AC Adaptor). Reconnect it and operate your camcorder again.

• E:xx:xx – Follow the general troubleshooting steps. Disconnect and reconnect the power source, then press the RESET button. If the problem persists, contact your dealer.

If messages appear on the screen, follow the corresponding instructions:

• Internal memory format error. The internal memory format is different from the default. Performing [MEDIA FORMAT] may enable you to use it, but this will delete all data.

• Data error. An error occurred while reading/writing data. This may happen if you apply shock to the camcorder.

• The Image Database File is damaged. The management file is damaged. Touch [YES] to create a new file. You may need to use the [REPAIR IMG.DB F.] function or the supplied “PMB” software to recover playback of old images.

• Buffer overflow. The memory card’s write speed is too slow for the recording mode. Use a recommended memory card (Class 4 or faster) or format the current card in the camcorder after backing up data.

• Reinsert the memory card. Reinsert the memory card. If the indicator still flashes, the card may be damaged. Try another card.

• This memory card is not formatted correctly. Format the memory card in the camcorder. This will delete all data on the card.

On use and care:

• Do not use or store the camcorder in places that are extremely hot, cold, or humid, or near strong magnetic fields or vibrations.

• Do not let the camcorder get wet from rain or sea water.

• Avoid rough handling, dropping, or physical shock, especially to the lens.

Cleaning the casing:

• If the casing is soiled, clean it with a soft cloth lightly moistened with water, then wipe it with a dry cloth. Avoid using chemicals like thinner or benzine.

Care and storage of the lens:

• Wipe the surface of the lens clean with a soft cloth if there are fingerprints or if it has been exposed to salty air.

• Store in a well-ventilated location with little dirt or dust. To prevent mold, clean the lens periodically.

Moisture condensation:

• If the camcorder is moved from a cold to a warm place, moisture may condense inside. If this happens, leave the camcorder turned off for about 1 hour to allow the moisture to evaporate.
