How do I use this manual?
The instructions are for the models listed in the table below. Before you start reading this manual and operating your camcorder, check the model number to confirm that the manual applies to your device. Any differences in operation are clearly indicated in the text, for example, “DCR-TRV315 only.” As you read through this manual, buttons and settings on your camcorder are shown in capital letters. e.g. Set the POWER switch to CAMERA. When you carry out an operation, you can hear a beep sound to indicate that the operation is being carried out.
What are some general warnings and precautions?
- Do not try to convert for country.
- Television programs, films, video tapes, and other materials may be copyrighted. Unauthorized recording of such materials may be contrary to the provisions of the copyright laws.
- The LCD screen and/or the color viewfinder are manufactured using highprecision technology. However, there may be some tiny black spots and/or bright spots (red, blue, or green in color) that constantly appear on the LCD screen and/or in the viewfinder. These spots occur normally in the manufacturing process and do not affect the recording.
What are the supplied accessories?

- CR2025 lithium battery (1). The lithium battery is already installed in your camcorder.

The contents of the recording are not compensated if recording/playback is not performed due to a malfunction of your camcorder or recording media, etc.
How do I prepare the power supply?
- Use the battery pack after charging it for your camcorder. Your camcorder operates only with the “InfoLITHIUM” battery pack (L series).
- Open the DC IN jack cover and connect the AC power adaptor supplied with your camcorder to the DC IN jack with the plug’s mark facing up.
- Connect the power cord to the AC power adaptor.
- Connect the power cord to a wall outlet.
- Set the POWER switch to OFF. Charging begins. The remaining battery time is indicated in minutes on the display window. When the remaining battery indicator changes to normal charge is completed. To fully charge the battery (full charge), leave the battery pack attached for about 1 hour after normal charge is completed until FULL appears in the display window. Fully charging the battery allows you to use the battery longer than usual.
How do I use AC power?
- Open the DC IN jack cover, and connect the AC power adaptor to the DC IN jack on your camcorder with the plug’s mark facing up.
- Connect the power cord to the AC power adaptor.
- Connect the power cord to a wall outlet.
WARNING: The power cord must only be changed at a qualified service shop.
PRECAUTION: The set is not disconnected from the AC power source (house current) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the set itself has been turned off.
How do I record a picture when the light source is behind the subject?
When you shoot a subject with the light source behind the subject or a subject with a light background, use the backlight function. Press BACK LIGHT in the recording or standby mode. The indicator appears in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen. To cancel, press BACK LIGHT again. If you press EXPOSURE when shooting backlit subjects, the backlight function will be canceled.
How do I record in a dark place?
The NightShot function enables you to shoot a subject in a dark place. For example, you can satisfactorily record the environment of nocturnal animals for observation when you use this function.
How do I advance the tape?
Press ►►I in the stop mode. To resume normal playback, press ►.
How do I rewind the tape?
Press ◄◄ in the stop mode. To resume normal playback, press ►.
How do I change the playback direction?
Press ◄ on the Remote Commander during playback to reverse the playback direction. To resume normal playback, press ►.
How do I locate a scene while monitoring the picture (picture search)?
Keep pressing ►►I or ◄◄ during playback. To resume normal playback, release the button.
How do I monitor the high-speed picture while advancing or rewinding the tape (skip scan)?
Keep pressing ►►I while rewinding or ◄◄ while advancing the tape. To resume rewinding or advancing, release the button.
How do I connect the camcorder to the TV?
- Open the jack cover.
- Connect your camcorder to the TV using the A/ V connecting cable. Then, set the TV / VCR selector on the TV to VCR.
- Connect the yellow plug for video and the white plug for audio on both your camcorder and the TV or the VCR (you do not connect the red plug). With this connection, the sound is monaural even on stereo models.
How do I connect the camcorder to the LINE IN input on the VCR?
Connect your camcorder to the LINE IN input on the VCR by using the A/ V connecting cable supplied with your camcorder. Set the input selector on the VCR to LINE.
How do I print a still picture by using the video printer?
Connect the video printer using the A/V connecting cable supplied with your camcorder. Connect the yellow plug of the cable to the VIDEO jack and to the video input of the video printer. Refer to the operating instructions of the video printer as well.
If the video printer is equipped with S video input: Use the S video connecting cable (not supplied). Connect it to the S VIDEO jack and the S video input of the video printer.
How do I use the fader function?
You can fade in or out to give your recording a professional appearance.
When fading in, the picture gradually changes from black-and-white to color. When fading out the picture gradually changes from color to black-and-white.
You cannot use this function when D ZOOM is set to ON in the MENU settings.
How do I use the wide mode?
You can record a 16:9 wide picture to watch on the 16:9 wide-screen TV (16:9 WIDE). The picture with black bands at the top and the bottom on the LCD screen or in the viewfinder (DCR-TRV315 only) is normal. The picture on a normal TV or in the viewfinder (DCR-TRV203/TRV210/TRV310 only) is horizontally compressed. You can watch the picture of normal images on a wide-screen TV.
How do I use special effects – Picture effect?
- Press PICTURE EFFECT in the standby mode. The picture effect indicator appears.
- Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select the desired effect.
- Press the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial. The picture effect indicator lights up.
How do I use special effects – Digital effect?
- Press DIGITAL EFFECT in the standby mode.
- Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial until the desired digital effect indicator (STILL, FLASH, LUMI. or TRAIL) flashes.
- Press the SEL/ PUSH EXEC dial. The digital effect indicator lights up and the bars appear. In the STILL or LUMI. mode, the picture where you press the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial is stored in memory as a still picture.
- Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to adjust the effect. The more bars there are on screen, the stronger the digital effect. The bars appear in the following modes: STILL, FLASH, LUMI. and TRAIL.
What does landscape mode do?
This mode is for when you are recording distant subjects such as mountains and prevents your camcorder from focusing on glass or metal mesh in windows when you are recording a subject behind glass or a screen.
What does low lux mode do?
This mode makes subjects brighter in insufficient light.
How do I use the PROGRAM AE function?
- Press PROGRAM AE in the standby mode. The PROGRAM AE indicator appears.
- Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select the desired PROGRAM AE mode.
If you press PROGRAM AE when using the NightShot function, the PROGRAM AE indicator flashes and the PROGRAM AE function does not work.
If you are recording under a discharge tube such as a fluorescent lamp, sodium lamp, or mercury lamp, flickering or changes in color may occur in the following modes. If this happens, turn the PROCRAM AE function off:
- Soft portrait mode
- Sports lesson mode
How do I adjust the exposure manually?
You can manually adjust and set the exposure. When you turn your camcorder on, it will automatically be in the automatic exposure mode. Adjust the exposure manually in the following cases:
- The subject is backlit
- Bright subject and dark background
- To record dark pictures (e.g. night scenes) faithfully
Steps:
- Press EXPOSURE in the standby or recording mode. The exposure indicator appears.
- Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to adjust the brightness.
To return to the automatic exposure mode press EXPOSURE again.
When you adjust the exposure manually, the following function and modes do not work:
- Backlight
- Slow shutter
- Old movie
If you change the PROGRAM AE mode or slide NIGHTSHOT to ON, your camcorder automatically returns to the automatic exposure mode.
How do I focus manually?
- Set the FOCUS switch to MANUAL. The manual focusing indicator appears in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen.
- Turn the focus ring to adjust the focus.
- When you cannot focus easily, press PUSH AUTO. The focus is adjusted automatically for a short time.
When the focus is adjusted automatically for a short time, “O” appears in the display window for about 2 seconds.
How do I insert a scene?
- Set the POWER switch to VTR. The video control buttons light up.
- Press ►to play back the tape.
- Press II at the point where you want to start recording. The camcorder goes into pause mode.
- Press REC START/STOP at the point where you want to start recording. Your camcorder starts recording and the recording indicator lights up.
How do I use the picture effect function during playback?
During playback, press PICTURE EFFECT and turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial until the desired picture effect indicator (NEG.ART, SEPIA, B&W or SOLAR.IZE) flashes.
To cancel the picture effect function, press PICTURE EFFECT.
The picture effect function works only for tapes recorded in the Digital8 system.
You cannot process externally input scenes using the picture effect function.
To record pictures that you have processed using the picture effect function, record the processed pictures on another VCR, etc.
How do I use the digital effect function?
- During playback, press DIGITAL EFFECT.
- Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial until the desired digital effect indicator (STILL, FLASH, LUMI. or TRAIL) flashes.

How do I search for a photo – Photo search/Photo scan?
- Set the POWER switch to VTR.
- Press SEARCH MODE on the Remote Commander repeatedly, until the photo scan indicator appears.
- Press ◄◄ or ►►I. Each photo is played back for about 5 seconds automatically.
To stop scanning, press ■.
The photo search and photo scan work only for tapes recorded in the Digital8 system.
How do I dub a tape?
- Connect your camcorder to the LINE IN input on the VCR by using the A/V connecting cable supplied with your camcorder.
- Set the input selector on the VCR to LINE.
- Play back the tape on your camcorder.
- Press REC on the VCR.
When you have finished dubbing a tape, press ■ on both your camcorder and the VCR.
If you have displayed the screen indicators on the TV, make the indicators disappear by pressing SEARCH MODE on the Remote Commander, DISPLAY, or DATA CODE so that they will not be superimposed on the edited tape.
You can edit on VCRs that support the following systems:

What are some notes on dubbing?
- The camcorder will automatically record in stereo if the audio on the tape being dubbed is stereo.
- When recording from other equipment, the image being recorded may turn back and white. When recording from other equipment, be sure to play back the original tape at normal speed.
- If your VCR is a monaural type, connect the yellow plug for video and the white plug for audio on both your camcorder and the VCR (you do not need to connect the red plug). With this connection, the sound will be monaural.
- Connect using an S video cable (not supplied) to obtain high-quality pictures. With this connection, you do not need to connect the yellow (video) plug of the A/V connecting cable. Connect an S video cable (not supplied) to the S video jacks of both your camcorder and VCR. If your VCR or TV does not have an S video out jack, do not connect an S video cable (not supplied) to your camcorder. If you connect an S video cable, the picture may not appear on screen.
How do I activate digital zoom?
Set D ZOOM to ON to activate digital zoom. More than 20x to 360x CAMERA zoom is performed digitally. Set D ZOOM to OFF to prevent the deterioration of the picture quality.
How do I record a 16:9 wide picture?
Set 16:9WIDE to ON to record a 16:9 wide picture.
How do I compensate for camera-shake?
Set STEADYSHOT to ON to compensate for camera-shake. Set STEADYSHOT to OFF to cancel the SteadyShot function. Natural pictures are produced when shooting a stationary object with a tripod.
How do I use the NightShot Light function?
Set N.S. LIGHT to ON to use the NightShot Light function. Set N.S. LIGHT to OFF to cancel the NightShot Light function.
How do I light up the camera recording lamp at the front of my camcorder?
Set REC LAMP to ON to light up the camera recording lamp at the front of your camcorder. Set REC LAMP to OFF to turn the camera recording lamp off so that the subject is not aware of the recording.
How do I turn off the backlight on the display window?
Set INDICATOR to BLOFF to turn off the backlight on the display window. Set INDICATOR to BLON to turn on the backlight.
What menu items are returned to their factory settings when the power source is removed?
In more than 5 minutes after removing the power source, the “COMMANDER” and “HiFi SOUND” items are returned to their factory settings. The other menu items are held in memory even when the battery is removed, as long as the lithium battery is installed.
How do I display selected menu items in normal size?
Select SIZE to be NORMAL.
How do I display selected menu items at twice the normal size?
Select SIZE to be LARGE.
How do I make the demonstration appear?
Turn DEMO MODE to ON.
How do I cancel the demonstration mode?
Turn DEMO MODE to OFF.
What are some notes on DEMO MODE?
- You cannot select DEMO MODE when a cassette is inserted into your camcorder.
- If the POWER switch is set to CAMERA or DEMO MODE is set to ON in the MENU settings without a cassette inserted, your camcorder automatically starts the demonstration after about 10 minutes. Note that you cannot select STBY if DEMO MODE starts when there is no cassette inserted.
What are some notes on recording and playback?
- Tapes recorded in the Digital8 system cannot be played back on a Hi8/standard 8 (analog) system machine.
- The Digital8 system or Hi8/standard 8 system is automatically detected before the tape is played back.
During playback of tapes recorded in the Hi8/standard8 system, digital signals are output as the image signals from the DV IN/OUT jack.
What should I know about the lithium battery?
- Keep the lithium battery out of the reach of children.
- Should the battery be swallowed, immediately consult a doctor.
- Wipe the battery with a dry cloth to ensure good contact.
What should I do if the image does not appear in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen?
- The POWER switch is set to VIR. Set it to CAMERA.
- STANDBY is set to LOCK. Turn STANDBY to STANDBY

What should I do if the picture is not clear?
- The viewfinder lens is not adjusted. Adjust the viewfinder lens.

What should I do if the camcorder automatically starts the demonstration?
- Your camcorder is not a malfunction.
- Slow shutter, low lux, or NightShot +Slow shutter mode is activated. This is not a malfunction.
- If 10 minutes elapse after you set the POWER switch to CAMERA or DEMO MODE is set to ON in the MENU settings without a cassette inserted, your camcorder automatically starts the demonstration. Insert a cassette and the demonstration stops. You can also cancel DEMO MODE.
- NIGHTSHOT is set to ON. Set it to OFF.
- NIGHTSHOT is set to ON in a bright place. Set it to OFF, or use the NightShot function in a dark place.
What should I do if no image appears on the TV screen?
- The POWER switch is set to CAMERA or OFF. Set it to VIR.
- The tape has run out. Rewind the tape.
- The television’s video channel is not adjusted correctly. Adjust it.
- The video head may be dirty. Clean the heads using the Sony cleaning cassette (not supplied).
- The stereo tape is played back with HiFi SOUND set to 2 in the MENU settings. Set it to STEREO.
- The volume is turned to minimum. Open the LCD panel and press VOLUME+.
What do I do if there is no sound?
- AUDIO MIX is set to ST2 side in the MENU settings. Adjust AUDIO MIX.

What should I do to maintain the camcorder?
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet when you are not using the unit for a long time.
- To disconnect the power cord, pull it out by the plug. Never pull the power cord itself.
- Do not operate the unit with a damaged cord or if the unit has been dropped or damaged.
- Do not bend the power cord forcibly, or place a heavy object on it. This will damage the cord and may cause fire or electrical shock.
- Prevent metallic objects from coming into contact with the metal parts of the connecting section. If this happens, a short may occur and the unit may be damaged.
- Always keep metal contacts clean.
- Do not disassemble the unit.
- Do not apply mechanical shock or drop the unit.
- While the unit is in use, particularly during charging, keep it away from AM receivers and video equipment. AM receivers and video equipment disturb AM reception and video operation.

How to prevent the power from shutting off during repairs?
In this unit, about 10 seconds after power is supplied (8.4V) to the battery terminal using the service power cord (J-6082-223-A), the power is shut off so that the unit cannot operate. This following two methods are available to prevent this. Take note of which to use during repairs.
- Method 1. Connect the servicing remote commander RM-95 (J-6082-053-B) to the LANC jack, and set the remote commander switch to the “ADJ” side.
- Method 2. Press the battery switch of the battery terminal using adhesive tape, etc.
How to force eject a cassette?
- Refer to 2-1. to remove the front panel assembly.
- Refer to 2-1. to remove the cabinet ® assembly.

How does the Self-diagnosis Function work?
When problems occur while the unit is operating, the self-diagnosis function starts working and displays on the viewfinder or Display window what to do. This function consists of two displays: self-diagnosis display and service mode display. Details of the self-diagnosis functions are provided in the Instruction manual.
The “self-diagnosis display” data will be backed up by the coin-type lithium battery (CF-62/63/65 board BH001). When this coin-type lithium battery is disconnected, the “self-diagnosis display” data will be lost by initialization.
How does the Self-diagnosis Display work?
When problems occur while the unit is operating, the counter of the viewfinder or Display window shows a 4-digit display consisting of an alphabet and numbers, which blinks at 3.2 Hz. This 5-character display indicates the “repaired by:”, “block” in which the problem occurred, and “detailed code” of the problem.
How does the Service Mode Display work?
The service mode display shows up to six self-diagnosis codes shown in the past.
How do I display the Service Mode?
While pressing the “STOP” key, set the switch from OFF to “VTR or PLAYER”, and continue pressing the “STOP” key for 5 seconds continuously. The service mode will be displayed, and the counter will show the backup No. and the 5-character self-diagnosis codes.
How do I switch the Backup No. to see past self-diagnosis codes?
By rotating the control dial, past self-diagnosis codes will be shown in order. The backup No. in the [] indicates the order in which the problem occurred.

How do I end the Service Mode Display?
Turning OFF the power supply will end the service mode display.
What are some possible issues and how to resolve them?
- Condensation:
- Video head is dirty: Clean with the optional cleaning cassette.
- Use the InfoLITHIUM battery.
- Load the tape again, and perform operations from the beginning.
- Remove the battery or power cable, connect, and perform operations from the beginning.
- Inspect the lens block zoom reset sensor (Pin of CN551 of VC-213 board) when zooming is performed when the zoom lens is operated and the zoom motor drive circuit (IC551 of VC-213 board) when zooming is not performed.
- Inspect pitch angular velocity sensor (SE651 of SE-86/87/89 board) peripheral circuits.
- Inspect yaw angular velocity sensor (SE652 of SE-86/87/89 board) peripheral circuits.
What are the safety related component warnings?
COMPONENTS IDENTIFIED BY MARK ! OR DOTTED LINE WITH MARK ! ON THE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS AND IN THE PARTS LIST ARE CRITICAL TO SAFE OPERATION. REPLACE THESE COMPONENTS WITH SONY PARTS WHOSE PART NUMBERS APPEAR AS SHOWN IN THIS MANUAL OR IN SUPPLEMENTS PUBLISHED BY SONY.
- Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or poorly-soldered connections. Check the entire board surface for solder splashes and bridges.
- Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no wires are “pinched” or contact high-wattage resistors.
- Look for unauthorized replacement parts, particularly transistors, that were installed during a previous repair. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
- Look for parts which, through functioning, show obvious signs of deterioration. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
- Check the B+ voltage to see it is at the values specified.
- Flexible Circuit Board Repairing: Keep the temperature of the soldering iron around 270˚C during repairing.
