The operating temperature ranges for the SANYO 36K12W are as follows:

The remote control unit for the SANYO 36K12W features the following controls and indicators:

A. OPERATION ON/OFF BUTTON: Used to turn the air conditioner ON/OFF.

B. COOLING OPERATION LAMP: Lights when the “COOL” mode is selected.

C. TIMER LAMP: Lights when the system is operating on the timer.

D. SAVING MODE LAMP: Lights when the NIGHT SETBACK or ENERGY SAVER mode is selected.

E. ROOM TEMPERATURE INDICATOR LAMPS: Indicate the approximate room temperature at the location of the remote control unit.

F. TEMPERATURE SCALE: The numbers constitute the temperature scale for cooling (°F).

G. COOL/FAN SELECTOR: Used to select “COOL” mode or “FAN(only)” mode without cooling.

H. OPERATION SELECTOR: This has four options:

1. TIMER ON: Used to start the system at the set time.

2. TIMER OFF: Used to stop the system at the set time.

3. NIGHT SETBACK/ENERGY SAVER: Used for programmed energy saving operation.

4. MANUAL: Used for conventional temperature control operation using the thermostat.

I. FAN SPEED SELECTOR:

AUTO: Fan speeds are automatically decided by the microcomputer.

HIGH: High fan speed.

MED: Medium fan speed.

LOW: Low fan speed.

J. THERMOSTAT KNOB: Regulates the room temperature as desired by adjusting this knob.

K. TIMER SET KNOB: Used to set the time at which you wish the air conditioner to go on or off. Each number on the scale shows setting hour.

L. SENSOR: Detects any change in the room temperature.

To start the SANYO 36K12W and cool the room, follow these steps:

1. Set the “G” knob to COOL.

2. Set the “H” knob to MANUAL.

3. Set the “I” knob to AUTO.

4. Set the “J” knob to the desired temperature.

5. Press the “A” OPERATION ON/OFF button.

Once these steps are completed, the “B” and “E” lamps will light, then after a few minutes, the air conditioner will start cooling operation.

To use the Timer to stop the SANYO 36K12W after a set number of hours:

1. Set the “K” knob to the number of hours at which you wish to stop the air conditioner.

2. Set the “H” knob to the TIMER OFF position.

The “C” lamp will light and after the set hours have elapsed the air conditioner will stop automatically.

The Manual mode is used for normal cooling operation on the SANYO 36K12W:

STEP 1: Set the COOL/FAN SELECTOR knob to COOL.

STEP 2: Set the OPERATION SELECTOR knob to MANUAL.

STEP 3: Set the FAN SPEED as desired.

STEP 4: Press the OPERATION ON/OFF button.

Note: This appliance has a built-in 3-minute time delay circuit to ensure reliable operation. If the operation button is pressed, the compressor will start running after three minutes. In the event of power failure, the unit will stop. When the power is applied, the unit will re-start automatically after 3 minutes.

By selecting Energy Saver mode and pressing the OPERATION ON/OFF button, the SANYO 36K12W will perform cooling operation until the temperature in the room reaches the set value, then the thermostat will cause the unit to pause. After about 30 minutes, the air conditioner will automatically raise the set temperature 2°F. This enables you to save energy without sacrificing comfort. To activate:

STEP 1: Set the OPERATION SELECTOR knob to ENERGY SAVER before turning the system on.

STEP 2: Press the OPERATION button. The ENERGY SAVER and COOL lamps will light.

When the Night Setback mode is selected on the SANYO 36K12W, the air conditioner will perform cooling operation until the temperature in the room reaches the set value, then the thermostat will cause the unit to pause. After about 30 minutes, the air conditioner will automatically raise the set temperature 2°F. When the room temperature reaches the newly set value, the thermostat will cause the unit to pause. After about 30 minutes the temperature is again raised by 2°F. This function is convenient when leaving the air conditioner on all night or soft cooling is needed.

STEP 1: Set the “H” OPERATION SELECTOR knob to NIGHT SETBACK before turning the system on.

STEP 2: Press the “A” OPERATION ON/OFF button. The NIGHT SETBACK and COOL lamp will light.

When the AUTO mode is selected on the FAN SPEED selector, a microcomputer in the SANYO 36K12W automatically controls the fan speed based on the difference between the room temperature and the set temperature. When the air conditioner starts operating, the difference is detected by the microcomputer which then automatically switches the fan speed to the most suitable level.

To circulate air without any temperature control on the SANYO 36K12W:

STEP 1: Set the COOL/FAN selector knob to FAN.

STEP 2: Press the OPERATION ON/OFF button.

The system starts after the set hours have elapsed.

STEP 1: Set the TIMER SET knob to the desired number of hours. (When the timer is set to 6, for instance, the system starts after six hours).

STEP 2: Set the OPERATION SELECTOR knob to TIMER ON.

STEP 3: Press the OPERATION ON/OFF button. The TIMER lamp will light.

A. Horizontal: The horizontal air flow can be adjusted by moving the vertical vane to the left or right.

B. Vertical: Hold both ends of the flap and move the flap up and down to adjust the vertical air flow.

NOTE: Be sure to set the flap within zone “A” for COOLING. If the flap is set within zone “B”, condensation may form near the air outlet grille and drip onto the floor.

To clean the casing and grille of the SANYO 36K12W:

1. Clean the casing and grille of the indoor unit with a vacuum cleaner brush, or wipe them with a clean soft cloth.

2. If these parts are stained, use a clean cloth moistened with a mild liquid detergent.

3. When cleaning the grille, be careful so as not to force the vanes out of place.

CAUTION:

1. Do not pour water on the unit to clean it. This will damage the internal components and cause an electric shock hazard.

2. Never use solvents, or harsh chemicals. Do not wipe the plastic casing using very hot water.

The air filter behind the air intake grille should be checked and cleaned at least once every two weeks.

How to remove the filter:

1. Place the flap on the air outlet grille in the bottom-most position.

2. Grasp the air filter by the tab at the bottom, and pull downward.

Cleaning:

Use a vacuum cleaner to remove light dust. If there is sticky dust on the filter, wash the filter in lukewarm, soapy water, rinse it in clean water, and dry it. When replacing the filter, check that the FRONT mark is facing you.

* No additional charge of compressor oil is required.

The Service TEST RUN switch is located at the rear bottom of the remote control unit. It is used for servicing the heat pump. Do not touch it, therefore. During normal operation, this switch must be set in the RUN position. If the heat pump is used with the switch in the TEST RUN position, it will not operate normally.

(1) Circuit breaker trips (or fuse blows):

a) When circuit breaker is set to ON, it is tripped soon (Resetting is not possible):

– Check interunit power line (between indoor and outdoor units). Is the wiring correct? If NO, execute rewiring.

– If wiring is correct, check insulation resistance of power supply cords. If YES, check insulation resistance of outdoor unit.

– Is the insulation resistance low (1 MΩ or less)? If NO, defect of insulation of indoor unit is possible. Remove interunit power cables and check insulation resistance between terminal (2) and ground and between terminal (1) and ground in the electrical component box of outdoor unit. If low, check insulation of indoor fan motor and transformer.

– If insulation resistance of outdoor unit is low, a defect of insulation of outdoor unit is possible. Check insulation of compressor motor, insulation of outdoor fan motor, and insulation of crank case heater.

b) Circuit breaker trips when the operation switch is depressed:

– Check capacity of circuit breaker. Is capacity suitable? If NO, replace with a suitable one (larger capacity).

– If capacity is YES, check resistance of indoor fan motor winding. Is fan motor normal? When the motor is hot, check it after cooling. If YES, check resistance of outdoor fan motor winding.

– If outdoor fan motor is normal, check indoor fan motor capacitor. If output is YES, check outdoor fan motor capacitor.

– If outdoor fan capacitor is YES, check compressor run capacitor in outdoor unit. If normal (YES), check resistance of compressor motor winding.

(2) Neither indoor unit nor outdoor unit runs:

– Check power supply. Is power being supplied to wall receptacle? If NO, check for power failure or contact power company.

– If power is YES, check operation lamp. Is the lamp lit? If NO, check fuse on the P.C.B. Ass’y for continuity.

– If fuse is blown, replace it (check power transformer and indoor fan motor if fuse blows again). If fuse is not blown, the P.C.B. Ass’y is defective; replace it.

1. Check fan rotation. Turn the fan gently once or twice by hand.

– If fan cannot be turned: Check fan casing for foreign matter on the inside (remove/repair) or check for fan motor burnout/foreign matter in bearing (repair or replace).

– If fan turns smoothly: Check fan motor capacitor. If defective, replace.

2. If capacitor is GOOD, check output of fan motor terminals on P.C.B. Ass’y.

– If No output: Check remote control unit. If YES, P.C.B. Ass’y is defective; replace.

– If There is output: Check indoor fan motor winding for resistance. If No continuity, replace fan motor. If Normal, try operation.

1. Confirm installation position of remote control unit. Does cool air from air conditioner reach position directly? If YES, change installation position of remote control unit.

2. Are wide and narrow tubes between indoor unit and outdoor unit insulated separately? If NO, insulate wide tube and narrow tube separately and then execute taping.

3. Measure temperatures of suction and discharge air of air conditioner. Is the temperature difference small? If YES, there is a possibility of gas shortage; charge refrigerant gas (R22).

4. If temperature difference is large enough (Approx. 18 deg. F or more), check for clogging of air filter. If clogged, clean filter.

5. If air filter is not clogged, check fan speed. If set to LOW, set fan speed to either HIGH or MEDIUM.

6. Reevaluate cooling load estimate. If performance of air conditioner is normal, reduce cooling load or replace the unit with higher cooling capacity.

1. Is TEST RUN selector switch (at back side) of remote control unit set to RUN (upper position)? If NO, set switch to RUN.

2. Is set temperature suitable? If NO, set temperature to higher value or set selector lever to AUTO.

3. Is remote control unit installed at a place where it can detect room temperature properly? If NO, change installation position of remote control unit.

4. Does compressor motor stop when operation pushbutton is depressed to OFF? If NO, check remote control unit. If remote unit is defective (NO), replace it.

5. If remote control unit is good (YES), check power relay defect. If defective, replace. If good, check P.C.B. Ass’y defect and replace if necessary.
