To set up your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5, you need to install the battery and SIM card. The microSD card slot is also in the same internal area.

Remove the back cover:

1. Insert a fingernail into the slot on the top of your phone.

2. Lift the cover up and to the right of the phone.

Caution: Do not remove the rubber seal from the inside of the back cover, as this can cause water damage. Do not bend or twist the back cover excessively.

Install the SIM Card:

1. Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket until it locks into place.

2. Ensure the card’s gold contacts face into the phone and the upper-left angled corner is positioned as shown in the manual’s diagram.

Note: If the card is not inserted correctly, the phone will not detect it.

Install the Battery:

1. Insert the battery into the opening on the back of the phone, ensuring the connectors align.

2. Gently press down to secure the battery.

Install the Back Cover:

1. Place the battery cover onto the back of the phone and press down.

2. Press along the edge of the back cover until you have a secure seal.

3. To avoid water damage, ensure the back cover is completely closed by pressing just below the AT&T Logo until you hear a click.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 supports a microSD or microSDHC card up to 64GB to expand memory space.

Installing the Memory Card:

1. Push the microSD card into the slot until it clicks.

2. Make sure the microSD’s gold contact pins face downward and the card is securely inserted.

Removing the Memory Card:

1. Push on the memory card until it clicks and is released.

2. Grasp the memory card and remove it from the phone.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery. You must fully charge it before first use. A discharged battery recharges fully in approximately 4 hours.

To connect a USB 3.0 cable to charge:

1. Connect the USB cable to the charging head.

2. Lift up on the Charger/Accessory jack cover on the bottom of your phone and swing it open.

Caution: Be careful not to damage or detach the jack cover, as a damaged or missing cover can result in water damage.

3. Insert the USB 3.0 cable into the device’s Charger/Accessory jack.

4. Plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet.

To connect an older USB 2.0 cable to charge:

1. Plug the flat end of the USB 2.0 cable into the smaller port within the device’s Charger/Accessory jack.

When charging is finished:

1. First, unplug the charger’s power plug from the AC wall outlet.

2. Then, disconnect the charger’s connector from the phone.

3. Before closing the jack cover, check for any foreign substances like dust or sand on the rubber seal.

4. Tightly close the multipurpose jack cover to ensure no water can enter the port.

Several features can drain your battery. Here are tips to help conserve your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5’s battery power:

• Reduce the time your backlight stays on.

• Turn Bluetooth off when not in use.

• Turn Wi-Fi off when not in use.

• Deactivate GPS when not needed. Many applications periodically query GPS, which drains the battery.

• Do not wait until your battery is completely depleted before charging. Repeated full discharge and recharge cycles can reduce the storage capacity over time.

• Use the Power Saving feature to deactivate some hardware and interface functions.

• Check the Battery use screen to see which features or functions are consuming battery resources.

• Check Running Services and close any unnecessary applications.

• Use the Task Manager to end or shut down background applications that are still running.

• Change animated Live Wallpapers to a non-animated wallpaper or gallery image, as they use more processing power.

To turn the device on:

1. Press and hold the Power/End key until the device switches on.

2. The device will search for your network. Once found, you can make or receive calls.

3. Swipe your finger across the screen to unlock the phone.

To turn the device off:

1. Press and hold the Power/End key until the Device options screen appears.

2. Tap “Power off”.

3. At the “Power off” prompt, tap OK.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 is rated IP67, meaning it is dust-resistant and water-resistant up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. To prevent damage, follow these tips carefully:

• Whenever your device gets wet, dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth.

• Do not expose the device to salt water, ionized water, or water over 1 meter deep for more than 30 minutes. If exposed to salt water, wash it with fresh water and dry it thoroughly.

• When drying your device, pat the earpiece, microphone, and speaker with a clean, soft cloth to remove as much water as possible.

• If you make a call immediately after the device is wet, the microphone may have water in it, which can lower the volume. Allow the device to air-dry before making a call.

• Ensure the back and multipurpose jack covers are properly aligned and tightly closed, especially if the device has been dropped or received an impact.

• Always keep the multipurpose jack cover clean and be careful to avoid damaging it.

Note: The touch screen may not be active in water.

1. Press the Power/End key to lock the touch screen.

2. Press the Power/End key again to display the lock screen.

3. Swipe your finger across the screen to unlock it.

Note: Swipe is the default screen locking method. You can change this in the Lock Screen Settings.

The Multi Window feature allows you to run two applications on the screen at the same time.

To activate Multi Window:

1. Go to Settings, then tap Multi window.

2. Tap the ON/OFF slider to turn the feature on.

3. Alternatively, open the Notification Panel, swipe the icons to the left, and tap the Multi window icon to activate it.

To use Multi Window:

1. Once activated, a small tab will appear on the side of your screen. Tap this tab to open the application panel.

2. Launch a primary application (e.g., Messaging).

3. Tap the Multi window tab to display the apps panel.

4. Touch and hold the second desired app (e.g., Internet) from the panel, then drag and drop it onto the top or bottom area of the current screen.

The screen will split, showing both applications. Each application remains independent.

To manage the Multi Window view:

• Resize windows: Touch and hold the Border bar between the apps and drag it to resize the windows.

• Switch window arrangement: Tap the border button, then tap Switch Window to swap the positions of the two apps.

• Close a selected application: Tap the border button, then tap Close Application. The current app will close, and the remaining app will be maximized.

You can customize your Home screen by adding shortcuts, widgets, changing wallpapers, and more.

Adding a Shortcut:

1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.

2. Touch and hold the application icon you want to add.

3. This creates a shortcut. While still holding the icon, position it on the desired Home screen page and release it.

Adding a Widget:

1. Touch and hold an empty area on the Home screen.

2. Tap “Widgets” at the bottom of the screen.

3. Press and hold an available Widget and position it on the desired Home screen page, then release it.

Changing the Wallpaper:

1. Touch and hold an empty area on the Home screen.

2. Tap “Wallpapers”.

3. Select “Home screen”, “Lock screen”, or “Home and lock screens”.

4. Scroll through the available images and tap one to select it. You can also choose from your own gallery images or animated Live wallpapers.

5. Tap “Set wallpaper” or “Done”.

Adding or Deleting Home Screens:

1. Touch and hold an empty area on the Home screen to enter edit mode.

2. To add a screen, scroll to the far right and tap the “Add screen” icon.

3. To delete a screen, drag the undesired screen up to the “Remove” icon at the top.

Note: Your device can have a maximum of seven home screens and must have at least one.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 offers three primary text input methods:

• Google voice typing: Allows you to enter text by speaking.

• Samsung keyboard (default): A standard QWERTY keypad for tapping letters, numbers, and symbols.

• Swype: Allows you to enter text by sliding your finger from letter to letter without lifting it.

How to Select a Text Input Method:

1. From a screen where you can enter text (like a new message), tap the text field.

2. Drag the Status bar down from the top of the screen to open the Notification panel.

3. Tap “Choose input method” and select your preferred method (e.g., Google voice typing, Samsung keyboard, Swype).

Using the Samsung Keyboard:

• Tap the keys to type letters.

• Tap the “Sym” key to switch to numbers and symbols.

• Tap the “ABC” key to switch back to letters.

• Tap the Shift key (up arrow) to toggle between lowercase, initial uppercase, and all uppercase.

Using Swype:

1. Ensure Swype is selected as the input method.

2. To type a word, place your finger on the first letter and glide it to the subsequent letters of the word without lifting.

3. Lift your finger after the last letter to complete the word.

Making a Call:

1. From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon.

2. Use the on-screen keypad to enter the number you wish to dial.

3. Tap the green Call icon to make the call.

Alternatively, you can call a contact by opening the Contacts app, finding the contact, and tapping the phone icon next to their number, or by swiping right on their name in the contact list.

Answering a Call:

When you receive a call, the incoming call screen will appear.

• To answer the call, touch and drag the green phone icon in any direction.

• To reject the call and send it to voicemail, touch and drag the red phone icon in any direction.

Ending a Call:

• When you are ready to end your call, tap the red End Call key.

During an active call, several on-screen buttons are available for control:

• Speaker: Tap “Speaker” to route the call audio through the phone’s external speaker. A green line will appear under the button. Tap it again to return the audio to the earpiece.

• Mute: Tap “Mute” to turn the microphone off so the other person cannot hear you. A green line will appear under the button. Tap it again to unmute the microphone.

• Keypad: Tap “Keypad” to display the on-screen keypad, which is useful for entering numbers for automated systems (DTMF tones).

• Hold: Press the Menu key (three vertical dots) and then select “Hold” to place the current call on hold.

• Add call: Tap “Add call” to display the dialer and make a second call, placing the first call on hold.

• Bluetooth: Tap “Bluetooth” to switch the call audio to a connected Bluetooth headset.

You can add, edit, and manage your contacts using the Contacts application.

Adding a New Contact:

1. From the Home screen, tap Contacts, then tap the plus (+) icon.

2. Choose where to save the contact (Device, SIM, or a synced account).

3. Tap the image icon to assign a picture from your Gallery or by taking a new photo.

4. Tap the fields for Name, Phone number, Email, etc., and use the on-screen keypad to enter the information.

5. Tap “Save” to save the new contact.

Editing an Existing Contact:

1. Open the Contacts app and tap the contact you want to edit.

2. Tap the pencil icon (Edit) at the top of the screen.

3. Tap any of the fields to add, change, or delete information.

4. Tap “Save” when you are finished.

Deleting a Contact:

1. In the Contacts list, touch and hold the contact you want to delete.

2. Tap “Delete” from the displayed list.

3. At the confirmation prompt, tap OK to delete the contact.

You can send messages using the default Messaging app.

1. From the main Home screen, tap Messaging, then tap the “Compose” icon (looks like a square with a pen).

2. In the “Enter recipient” field, you can either manually type a phone number or tap the person icon to select a recipient from your Contacts, Groups, Favorites, or Logs.

3. Tap the “Enter message” field and use the on-screen keypad to type your message.

4. To add an attachment (making it a multimedia message), tap the paperclip icon. You can attach:

• Images or videos from your Gallery.

• A new picture or video taken with the camera.

• An audio file or a new audio recording.

• A memo, calendar event, or your location.

5. Once your message is complete, review it and tap the “Send” icon.

Turning Wi-Fi On:

1. From the main Settings screen, tap “Wi-Fi”.

2. Tap the ON/OFF slider at the top right of the screen to turn Wi-Fi on.

Connecting to a Network:

1. Once Wi-Fi is on, your phone will automatically scan for available Wi-Fi networks.

2. A list of detected networks will be displayed. Tap the network you want to connect to.

3. If the network is secured (indicated by a lock icon), you will be prompted to enter the password. Enter the password and tap “Connect”. If the network is open, your device will connect automatically.

Turning Bluetooth On:

1. From the main Settings screen, tap “Bluetooth”.

2. Tap the ON/OFF slider at the top right to turn Bluetooth on. Your phone is now discoverable.

Scanning and Pairing:

1. Your phone will automatically scan for available Bluetooth devices in range.

2. Tap the name of the device you want to pair with from the list of available devices.

3. A pairing request with a passkey or PIN code will appear on both your phone and the other device. Confirm that the codes match and tap “OK” or “Pair” on both devices.

4. Once successfully paired, the device will appear under the “Paired devices” list.

The Mobile Hotspot feature allows you to share your phone’s mobile data connection with other devices via Wi-Fi.

Note: This feature requires a tethering plan on your account.

To activate the Mobile Hotspot:

1. From the main Settings screen, navigate to “Tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot”.

2. Tap the slider next to “Mobile Hotspot” to turn it on.

3. Read the notification regarding data use and tap OK.

To configure the Hotspot:

1. While in the “Tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot” menu, tap on “Mobile Hotspot” (the text, not the slider) to access its settings.

2. Tap “Configure”. Here you can edit the Network SSID (the name of your hotspot), set the security type (WPA2 PSK is recommended), and create a password.

3. Tap “Save” to store the new settings.

To connect another device to the Hotspot:

1. On the other device (e.g., laptop, tablet), enable Wi-Fi.

2. Scan for available Wi-Fi networks and select the Network SSID of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S5.

3. Enter the password you created and connect.

You can use the Finger Scanner as an alternative security method for your lockscreen and other actions.

1. From the main Settings screen, tap “Finger Scanner”.

2. Tap “Fingerprint manager”.

3. Read the Disclaimer and tap OK.

4. Tap on the finger or thumb you would like to register.

5. Swipe your finger over the Home key, from the first knuckle to the tip of the finger. An on-screen animation will show you how.

6. Continue to swipe your finger until the progress bar reaches 100%.

7. You will be prompted to enter an alternative password to use in case your fingerprint is not read correctly. Enter and confirm the password.

8. Your fingerprint is now registered. You can use it to unlock your screen and for other features like verifying your Samsung account or paying with PayPal.

Taking a Picture:

1. From the Home screen, tap the “Camera” icon to open the camera app.

2. Aim the camera at your subject. You can tap the screen to focus on a specific area.

3. Pinch the screen to zoom in or out.

4. Press the on-screen camera button (shutter) to take the picture. You can also press the Volume keys to take pictures.

Recording a Video:

1. In the Camera app, tap the video camera icon to switch to video mode.

2. Aim the camera at your subject.

3. Tap the red record button to begin shooting video. A red light will blink while recording.

4. Tap the pause key to pause recording, or the stop key to stop recording and save the video file to your Camera folder.

The “Palm swipe to capture” feature allows you to capture on-screen information by swiping your hand across the screen.

To enable the feature:

1. Go to Settings, then tap “Motions and gestures”.

2. Select “Palm swipe to capture”.

3. In a single motion, touch and slide the slider to the right to turn it on.

To take a screenshot:

1. With the feature enabled, navigate to the screen you want to capture.

2. In a single motion, press the side of your hand on the screen and swipe it from left to right (or right to left).

3. The screen will flash, and you will find the captured image in the Images section in My Files and in your Gallery.

You can back up your phone’s settings and data to Google servers and reset your phone to its original factory settings.

Backing Up Your Data:

1. From the main Settings screen, tap “Back up and reset”.

2. Tap “Back up my data” to enable or disable backup of application data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to the Google server.

3. Tap “Backup account” to select or add the Google account you want to use for the backup.

Performing a Factory Data Reset:

Warning: Performing a Factory data reset will erase all data from your phone and internal storage, including your Google account, system and application data, settings, and downloaded applications. It will not erase external SD card files.

1. From the main Settings screen, tap “Back up and reset”.

2. Tap “Factory data reset”.

3. The screen will display reset information. Tap “Reset device”.

4. Follow the remaining prompts to perform the reset.
