INSTRUCTION MANUAL ROTEL FEATURES THE ALL TRANSISTORIZED FAX-88A IS A COMPLETE HIGH FIDELITY STEREO CEN TER WITH MATCHING FULL-RANGE HIGH COMPLIANCE SPEAKERS. HAS SUCH QUALITY FEATURES AS, 40 WATTS PEAK MUSIC POWER, BASS AND TREBLE TONE CONTROLS, STEREO BEAM INDICATOR LIGHT, TUNING METER FOR SELECTIVE TUNING, PHONO (MAGNET AND CRYSTAL) AND TAPE INPUTS, AND TAPE OUTPUT FOR OFF-THE-AIR RECORDING. OUTPUT CONNECTIONS: TAPE OUT: Using shielded cable, connecting the output from these two jacks to the tuner input jacks of your tape recorder, will allow simultaneous recording without interference to your listening pleasure. SPEAKER OUTPUT: Using the speaker cables supplied with the unit, connect the output from these jacks to the input jacks located on the rear of the companion speakers. FUSE: The FAX-88A has a fuse in the secondary circuit to prevent damage of transistors. The value of the fuse is 1 ampere. In the event of its failure, this fuse should be replaced with one of the same rating INSTALLATION IMPORTANT: Do not apply power to this unit without making sure both speakers are connected. Failure to do so may result in damage to the unit. OPERATION After all connections have been made as covered in the preceding instructions, Power may be applied by turning the Loudness Switch. INSTALLATION: Before attempting to operate the Model FAX-88A, please read the following instructions carefully. Only after all necessary connections are made, should the power be applied. LISTENING TO PHONO: Push the “PHONO” input button. The Bass and Treble Tone controls setting would depend on personal preference. Adjust the BALANCE control to obtain proper balance of the speakers. AM RECEPTION: Push the "AM" input button. Adjust the tuning knob to the desired station. Maximum signal strength is obtained at the maximum deflection of the TUNING METER. ANTENNA: FM ANTENNA: Because of the excellent sensitivity of the FAX 88A, an ordinary piece of wire 48 inches in length will act as a suitable FM antenna in most locations. In difficult reception areas, however, it is recommended that an outside antenna be used. When using the outside antenna, connect one wire to "FM" and the other wire to “G” at the antenna input located on the rear of the unit. AM ANTENNA: While the FAX-88A contains a built in Loop Stick antenna, AM reception can be improved by adding a short piece of wire to the "AM" antenna input terminal, FM RECEPTION: Push the "FM" input button. Tune to the desired station noting the Tuning Meter as stated above. FM STEREO RECEPTION (MULTIPLEX) Push the "FM STEREO" input button. As you tune across the diai, the small red Stereo Indicator light will light when an FM Station broadcasting Multplex Stereo is obtained. Adjust the dial for maximum signal strength, as in dicated by the Tuning Meter. Adjust Balance Control for proper balance of speakers. INPUT CONNECTIONS: PHONO INPUT: Low level Phono Inputs — Inputs from a mag netic or variable reluctance (constant velocity type) cartridge should be connected to the jacks designated MAG. High level Phono Inputs - Inputs from “Con stant-Amplitude" phono cartridge, such as crystal and ceramic types should be connected to the jacks designated XTAL. TAPE INPUT: When it is desired to play back a tape recording through the FAX-88A and its speakers, connect the output lead of the tape unit to the jack marked TAPE. MAKING TAPE RECORDINGS: To make off-the-air recordings, push the AM, FM, FM Stereo, or PHONO input button, de pending upon the source to be recorded. The volume and tone controls do not effect the signal at the tape input jacks and may be changed as desired without effecting the recording being made.
