What safety precautions should be followed when using the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

When using the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3, please observe the following safety instructions:

Warning:

Before using this unit, make sure to read the instructions.

Do not open or perform any internal modifications on the unit.

Do not attempt to repair the unit, or replace parts within it except when the manual provides specific instructions directing you to do so.

Never use or store the unit in places that are subject to temperature extremes (e.g., direct sunlight in an enclosed vehicle, near a heating duct, on top of heat-generating equipment); or are damp (e.g., baths, washrooms, on wet floors); or are humid; or are exposed to rain; or are dusty; or are subject to high levels of vibration.

Do not allow any objects (e.g., flammable material, coins, pins); or liquids of any kind (water, soft drinks, etc.) to penetrate the unit.

Protect the unit from strong impact. Do not drop it.

Immediately turn the power off if smoke or unusual odor occurs; objects have fallen into, or liquid has been spilled onto the unit; the unit has been exposed to rain (or otherwise has become wet); or the unit does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance.

In households with small children, an adult should provide supervision until the child is capable of following all the rules essential for the safe operation of the unit.

If the bass includes a battery, remove the battery from the bass before attempting installation of this unit.

Caution:

Never climb on top of, nor place heavy objects on the unit.

Whenever you have removed any parts (screws, washers, springs, etc.) used in attaching components, be sure to keep them out of the reach of small children in order to prevent them from being swallowed accidentally.

What important notes should be considered regarding the handling and installation of the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

Using the unit near power amplifiers (or other equipment containing large power transformers) may induce hum.

Noise may be produced if wireless communications devices, such as cell phones, are operated in the vicinity of this unit. Such noise could occur when receiving or initiating a call, or while conversing.

Never use benzine, thinners, alcohol or solvents of any kind, to avoid the possibility of discoloration and/or deformation.

When connecting or disconnecting all cables, grasp the connector itself; never pull on the cable. This way you will avoid causing shorts, or damage to the cable’s internal elements.

Do not touch any of the printed circuit pathways.

Never use excessive force when installing a circuit board.

When circuit board installation is complete, double-check your work.

Install only the included circuit boards. Remove only the specified screws.

Be sure to use the special cable supplied to connect the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3 to the GK-compatible device for bass. Use of any other cable may cause unnecessary problems.

The ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3 cannot be used with basses that have unusual or customized string setups, or basses strung with nylon, rubber, or other non-metallic strings.

How should I handle the circuit board of the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3 to avoid static electricity damage?

To avoid the risk of damage to internal components that can be caused by static electricity, please carefully observe the following whenever you handle the board:

Before you touch the board, always first grasp a metal object (such as a water pipe), so you are sure that any static electricity you might have been carrying has been discharged.

When handling the board, grasp it only by its edges. Avoid touching any of the electronic components or connectors.

Before you connect any cables, make sure they do not carry a static electricity charge. Such charges can be transmitted, for example, if the other end of the cable has been in contact with a carpet (or other object) where there is a static electricity buildup.

Save the bag in which the board was originally shipped, and put the board back into it whenever you need to store or transport it.

What additional parts must be arranged separately for the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3 installation?

The following parts are not included and should be arranged separately:

4 Screws (for installing the Connector Plate)

2 Ground Wires

How do I adjust the divided pickup on the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

Adjust the divided pickup according to the string spacing for the bass in which the pickup is being installed.

1. Measure the distance between strings on your bass.

2. Loosen the two screws in the sides of the pickup, move the markers so that they are correctly positioned according to the distance between the strings, then retighten the screws.

Notes:

Be careful not to tighten the screws excessively.

This adjustment is made so that both the 2nd string marker and 5th string marker are at the same position.

What is the procedure for attaching the divided pickup on the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

Use the included screws and springs to attach the pickup on the bass.

1. Attach the pickup so that the screws on the side of the pickup face toward the neck.

2. Adjust the pickup so that the center marker is between the D and A strings and the 2nd and 5th string markers are directly under the G and E strings, respectively.

3. Make sure that the pickup and the bridge are no more than 50 mm apart (15–25 mm is recommended).

4. Adjust the height of the divided pickup so that there is approximately 1.5 mm of clearance between the string and pickup when the string is pressed on the highest fret.

How do I install the GK Connector Board for the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

1. Attach the GK connector to the connector plate with the supplied screws.

2. Attach the plate to the bass with the screws (screws for installing the connector plate are arranged separately).

Note: Mount the GK Connector board so that the small connection port is placed top toward the bass top side.

What are the wiring instructions for the Bass Signal on the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

1. Solder uncovered wire (silver) to the earth (ground) of the bass.

2. Solder the white wire to the bass signals.

Diagram: Uncovered -> Earth (ground) of the bass; White -> Bass signal.

Note: Do not exceed 12 Vp-p for input signal level.

How should the GK Volume be wired on the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

Solder each signal wire of the GK volume with GK volume (50 kΩ ±20 % B Curve).

Cable Color Coding:

1: Red

2: White

3: Black

How do I wire the switches (Select, DOWN/S1, UP/S2) for the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

1. Ground wire for each wiring is common. Wire the ground wires as shown in the “Wiring Diagram” in the manual (Connect ground to Pin 2: SHIELD).

2. Using a rebounding switch (SPDT (ON)-OFF-(ON)) for DOWN/S1, UP/S2, mounting can be simpler.

Note: Switches are not included and must be acquired separately.

Pinout Reference:

7: PURPLE (DOWN/S1)

2: SHIELD (Connect ground)

8: GRAY (UP/S2)

When is the “Wiring for Bass Battery” required for the ROLAND GK-KIT-BG3?

If the bass has a battery for powering the pickup and preamp, install the wiring from the jack as shown in the “Wiring Diagram”.

Even if a plug is not inserted in the jack, when power is applied to the GK connector, power from the battery is turned on.

Notes:

This function is enabled only for the circuit being turned on/off with the battery’s negative terminal.

This wiring is not necessary for basses without internal batteries.

This wiring is for switching the battery on and off; it is not used for supplying power to the bass.

A current of 500 mA or less can be switched ON/OFF using this circuit. Please use due caution; if current consumption exceeds 500 mA, this circuit cannot be used.
