When you unpack your heater, check for any damage. If the heater is damaged, contact your supplier for advice. Before installing the heater, check that it is labelled for the correct gas type for your location. Refer to your local gas authority for confirmation of the gas type if you are in doubt.

Please adhere to the following important points for installation and placement:

1. The appliance must be installed according to the requirements of the local gas authority.

2. When installing this appliance, ensure that the room is correctly ventilated.

3. DO NOT install in a bedroom or bathroom.

4. This appliance must not be installed in close proximity to flammable materials, e.g. curtains, and must be 50mm clear of side walls.

5. This appliance is not designed to be built in.

While the RINNAI CONVECTOR 404 is in operation, the following clearances are required:

• Top: 50mm

• Sides (left and right): 50mm

• Front: 600mm

Do not install this unit in areas where spray painting or plating is taking place or in places such as hair dressers where there may be a lot of fluff and dust, and where aerosols are used. The use of aerosols, paint, polishes etc. whilst this heater is in use may cause unpleasant smells.

1. Plug the heater into both the gas and power points. The room must be ventilated when using this heater.

2. Depress the ignition button slowly and firmly. The button will return to the “on” position when you release it and the heater will ignite.

3. When you release the ignition button the “Operation” and “Temperature Level” lamps will illuminate, the spark will ignite the main burner and the convection fan will begin to run.

4. If the unit does not ignite in 15 seconds the spark will stop and the alarm will sound. Turn off and repeat the ignition operation.

Note: There may be a smell of burning dust the first time the heater is lit or when the heater has been out of operation for a long time; this is normal. You may need to repeat the ignition operation the first time the heater is plugged in, due to air in the hose.

To change the room temperature, simply adjust the temperature control knob to the desired setting. The thermostat automatically modulates the burner and the fan between their 3 settings to maintain the selected room temperature. The temperature range from LO to HI is about 12°C to 36°C. Note that the heater will run on high for 1 to 2 minutes after ignition regardless of where the temperature control is set.

Temperature is indicated by the L.E.D. display on the control panel. An increase in temperature is indicated by an increasing number of lights on the display. You will be able to hear the solenoids operating as the temperature control modulates the burner.

1. Depress the ignition button again. The switch will return to the “off” position.

2. Disconnect the hose after use.

3. Do not turn off by unplugging at the power point. The convection fan continues to run until the heater is cool. The convection fan may start again after a few minutes to remove residual heat.

To change to “Economy Mode”, push the “Economy” switch, and the green lamp will glow. 30 minutes after the room temperature reaches the preset temperature (set with the thermostat), the Economy Mode, if set, reduces the temperature by 1°C. After another 30 minutes, it reduces the temperature by a further 1°C. This is an energy-saving feature.

The “Economy Mode” does not operate when the heater is running only on low, or if the unit is under capacity for the room size.

To keep your heater looking good and working efficiently:

• Unplug the unit before cleaning.

• All parts of the heater can be cleaned using a soft, damp cloth.

• Do not use solvents to clean any parts.

• Do not spray aerosols in the vicinity of this appliance while it is in operation.

• Do not place articles on or against this appliance.

• Do not store flammable materials near this appliance.

You should clean both air filters at least once a week. Do not wait for the filter warning lamp to come on before cleaning filters, as dusty filters reduce the air flow and the heater’s effectiveness.

• To clean Filter 1, remove it from the unit.

• Filter 2 is not removable; clean it with a vacuum cleaner while it is in position.

Do not use the heater with the filter warning lamp on, as it may cause the unit to overheat.

• Turn off the unit after use and disconnect the gas hose (where fitted).

• Keep away from flammable materials.

• Do not spray aerosols near this unit while it is in use.

• Do not sit on this unit.

• Do not allow children to post articles in the louvres.

• Supervise children playing near this unit.

• Do not allow children or elderly persons to sleep in the warm air discharge from the unit.

• Do not place wet articles on this unit; the water may drip into the electrical parts.

• Ventilate the room when this heater is in use.

• Do not place articles in front of the louvres.

• Do not move the unit whilst it is turned on.

• Do not turn the unit off by unplugging it from the wall, or whilst the fan is cooling the unit off.

• Do not place containers of liquid on top of the unit as water in the unit can cause extensive damage.

The RINNAI CONVECTOR 404 includes several safety devices:

• Over Heat Switch: Turns the gas off automatically if the heater gets too hot. Remove the cause of the overheat (clean filters), allow the heater to cool, then re-ignite.

• Fuse: Protects the electrical circuits. If the fuse blows, the heater will not operate. The fuse must be replaced by an authorised person.

• Flame Failure Device: Automatically cuts the gas supply if there is a gas failure. To restore, turn the heater off, then follow the ignition procedure.

• Oxygen Depletion Safety Device: Cuts the gas supply and sounds an alarm if the room’s oxygen level drops below a pre-set limit. To reset, turn the heater off, ventilate the room, then follow the ignition procedure. The heater will not relight until the room is fully ventilated.

• Tilt Switch: Cuts the gas supply if the heater is knocked over, jolted, or picked up while in operation. To restore, stand the heater up and follow the ignition procedure.

• Alarm: Sounds when the heater is shut off automatically by one of the safety devices. To stop the alarm, turn the ignition button off.

If the operation lamp does not glow, the heater is likely not plugged in. Check the power connection and plug the heater in.

If the burner does not ignite and the combustion lamp is off, check the following:

• Is it plugged in? Ensure the heater is plugged into the power outlet.

• Is there air in the hose? If the heater is new or has been disconnected, you may need to repeat the ignition procedure to purge the air.

• Is the operation correct? Review the “Ignition” instructions in your manual.

• Is it the wrong gas type? If the above steps do not work, you may have the wrong gas type, which requires a service call.

A yellow flame can be caused by dust inside the heater. This issue requires a service call.

If the room temperature does not increase, check for these possible causes:

• Blocked Louvre: Check if the air outlet louvre is blocked and remove any obstructions.

• Dusty Air Filters: The air filters may be clogged with dust. Clean the air filters.

• Room Too Large: The heater may not have sufficient capacity for the size of the room. Check with your retailer.

If the filter warning lamp glows, it indicates that the air filters are dusty and need cleaning. Turn the heater off and clean both air filters.

If the burner goes out and an alarm sounds, it is often due to dusty air filters causing one of the safety devices to activate. You should clean the air filters.
