What are the parts of the soil tester?
The soil tester consists of the following parts:
Meter Dial: Displays the readings for light, moisture, nutrients, and pH.
Light Sensor: Detects the amount of light.
Switch: Used to select between light, moisture/nutrient, and pH modes.
3-in-1 Sensor: The probe that is inserted into the soil, which contains the Moisture Sensor, pH Sensor, and Soil Fertility Sensor.
How do I use the soil tester?
Step 1: Switch the toggle to the light, moisture/nutrient, or pH position depending on what you want to measure.
Step 2: Choose a spot and insert the meter probe into the soil at least 2.5 inches deep. Do not force it. If you meet resistance, try another spot.
Step 3: The needle on the dial will respond immediately. Read the final results when the needle stops moving.
Step 4: After each use, remove the probe from the soil and wipe it clean.
Tip: If the tip gets rusted, you can use fine sandpaper (#400-1000) to gently polish it.
How do I interpret the light scale reading?
The light scale measures relative light intensity from 0 to 2000 lux.
0 – 200 (LOW): Suitable for some ferns and shade-loving crops.
200 – 500 (LOW+): Suitable for some ferns and shade-loving crops.
500 – 1000 (NOR): Suitable for most plants.
1000 – 2000 (HGH): Suitable for most plants.
Note: The light sensor is designed for testing sunlight and is not suitable for testing artificial light.
How do I interpret the moisture sensor reading?
The moisture sensor has a range from 1 to 9.
Red Zone (1-2 DRY): The soil is dry. This may only be suitable for some succulents.
Green Zone (3-7 NOR): The soil has adequate moisture and is suitable for most plant growth.
Blue Zone (8-9 WET): The soil is wet. This is suitable for ferns and wet-loving plants.
Note: Please refer to the “Plant Watering Guide” to understand the specific moisture needs for your plant.
How do I interpret the soil fertility reading?
The soil fertility has a nutrient range from 1 to 9.
Yellow Zone (1 LOW): Soil fertility is insufficient. This is only suitable for the growth of some succulents.
Green Zone (2-8 NOR): Soil fertility is sufficient and suitable for most plant growth.
Red Zone (9 HGH): Soil fertility is too high. There is no need to add fertilizer.
Note: The fertility results are based on a comprehensive measurement of soil moisture, nutrients, and pH, not a single-element value.
How do I interpret the pH sensor reading?
The pH sensor has a range from 1 to 8.
1 – 4: Strongly Acidic
5 – 6: Slightly Acidic
7: Neutral
8: Slightly Alkaline
Note: When conducting a pH test, pay attention to the following tips:
1. Make sure the soil is moist but not wet.
2. Make sure the probe is inserted at least 2.5 inches deep.
3. Most soil in home gardens or mixed soil bought from the market is slightly acidic to neutral, which is already suitable for most gardening needs.
When should I water my plants based on the moisture reading?
WATER THESE PLANTS when dry RANGE LEVEL (Red Zone: 1-2)
AGAVE, ALOE, ANCHOR PLANT, ASPARAGUS FERN, BABY’S BREATH, BIRD OF PARADISE, CACTI, CAST IRON PLANT, CENTURY PLANT, CRYPTANTHUS, DONKEY’S TAIL, DRACAENA, DUMB CANE, EUPHORBIA, FICUS AUDREY, FIDDLE LEAF FIG, FICUS LYRATA, FLAMING SWORD, LANTANA, LIPSTICK VINE, PEPEROMIA, PILEA, FIRECRACKER PLANT, ORCHID, POINSETTIA, GOLD DUST PLANT, HIBISCUS, JADE PLANT, JASMINE PLANT, OXALIS TRIANGULARIS, PONYTAIL PLANT, SNAKE PLANT, STRING OF HEARTS, STRING OF PEARLS, SUCCULENTS, ZZ PLANT

WATER THESE PLANTS when dry RANGE LEVEL (Green Zone: 6-7)
ACTION PLANT, AFRICAN VIOLET, ALOCASIA, ANTHURIUM, AZALEA, BABY TEARS, BAY TREE, BUDDHIST PINE, CALADIUM, CALATHEA, CALLA LILY, CHRISTMAS, CACTUS, COLEUS, CREEPING FIG, GARDENIA, SENSITIVE PLANT, COLOCASIA, FINGERNAIL PLANT, TEMPLE BELLS, CROTON, DIEFFENBACHIA, DRACAENA PALM, EUONYMUS, FERNS, PALM, PRAYER PLANT
DO NOT WATER PLANTS at WET LEVEL (Blue Zone: 8-9)
What are some important reminders when using the soil tester?
1. Don’t force the meter into the soil; when meeting resistance, insert it in another spot.
2. Clean and wipe the probe after each use.
3. Don’t insert it in the soil for a long time.
4. Only apply it to test the soil. (NOTE THAT IT CAN’T TEST WATER or any other liquids).
5. Do not use the meter to loosen the soil.
Is this meter good for testing outdoor garden plants such as tomatoes and peppers etc.?
It worked fine outside. Also don’t forget to remove it from your plant and clean.
How deep can this go?
The probes are 6.6″ long. Most of the pots I’m checking are 6 to 10″, so it works great. Not sure how big your pots are, but hope this helps.
Will this work for testing over-watering in a 5 gallon grow bag/pot?
Size of 5 Gal. Fabric Pot is: D12.5”X H9.9”(31.5 X 25 cm). When over-watering, much water is kept at the bottom if no drain hole. As our tester probe is 6.6″ long, the deepest soil moisture we can test is 6.6″.
Do I have to wait 10 mins each if I want to measure moisture, light & ph? Will it be 30 mins to measure everything?
No. As soon as you put it in the soil, the reading appears. You do have to manually select the measurement, ie. pH, light or moisture. Please keep a clean towel handy to wipe the sensors off and go to the next plant.
Can you just leave it in the soil 24/7?
Don’t insert it in the soil for a long time. Remove it out and clean after testing.
Does pushing the rods into a potted plant harm the roots? If yes, will this effect the plant?
Depending on the plant, stay toward the edge of the pot, you should be fine…if you feel resistance, try a different spot.
Can I use your soil tester under the plant lamp to measure the soil’s light?
The light test is designed for sunlight testing originally, not suitable for the plant lamp or artificial light. However, when you put it close to the artificial light source, it has results as well.
Can this be used for extremely dry soil in Bonsai Containers?
Not recommended. You’d better water the soil moderately, then test the moisture again.
What powers the unit?
No battery is required.
