The following accessories are supplied with your PHILIPS DVD728:

• DVD-Video Player

• Remote control with Batteries

• SCART cable

To make the best connection, please refer to the instruction manuals of your TV and other devices. You have the following options:

Using SCART (Best Quality):

1. Connect the SCART (TV OUT) on the DVD Player to the corresponding connector (TV IN) on your TV.

Note: Ensure that the “TV” indication on the SCART cable is connected to the TV set and the “DVD” indication on the SCART cable is connected to the DVD player.

If your TV has a CVBS Video input (Good Quality):

1. Connect the CVBS VIDEO OUT on the DVD Player to the CVBS VIDEO IN on your TV.

2. Connect the Left and Right AUDIO OUT on the DVD Player to the Left and Right AUDIO IN on the TV.

Warning! Never make or change connections with the power switched on.

Connecting to an Audio System (Stereo):

1. To listen to audio CDs and DVD video discs, connect the Left and Right AUDIO OUT on the DVD Player to the Left and Right AUDIO IN on your stereo system.

Connecting to Optional Equipment (Digital Surround Sound):

If your receiver has a built-in MPEG 2 or Dolby Digital™ decoder for surround sound:

1. Connect the COAXIAL or OPTICAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUT of the DVD Player to the COAXIAL or OPTICAL DIGITAL AUDIO IN on your receiver.

Note: If the audio format of the digital output does not match your receiver’s capabilities, it may produce distorted sound or no sound. Refer to the “Setup Menu” to see the selected audio format.

1. Open the battery cover by pressing in the tab, then lift off the cover.

2. Insert batteries with the correct polarity as indicated by the + and – symbols inside the battery compartment.

3. Close the cover.

CAUTION!

• Remove batteries if they are exhausted or not to be used for a long time.

• Do not use old and new or different types of batteries in combination.

• Batteries contain chemical substances, so they should be disposed of properly and kept away from children.

1. Ensure the DVD Player is correctly connected to the TV and audio equipment.

2. Switch on the TV and DVD Player.

3. Set the TV to the correct Video In channel (e.g., EXT1, EXT2, AV1, AUDIO/VIDEO, etc.). Refer to your TV owner’s manual for details. The Player display will light up, and the default screen will appear on the TV.

4. If you are using external equipment like an audio system, turn it on and select the appropriate input source for the DVD Player output.

Smart Power On/Off

When in STOP or NO DISC mode, the DVD Player will switch to standby mode after 15 minutes of inactivity to save energy. To reactivate it, press the POWER or PLAY key on the remote control, or the STANDBY-ON button on the front panel.

1. Press STANDBY-ON on the front panel to turn on the DVD Player.

2. Press OPEN/CLOSE on the front panel to open the disc loading tray.

3. Place the chosen disc in the tray, with the label facing up.

4. Press OPEN/CLOSE again to close the tray. After recognizing the disc, the player will begin playback automatically.

Note: If ‘Disc Lock’ is enabled and the inserted disc is not authorized, you must enter the 6-digit code to proceed.

Video Control during playback

• STOP/PLAY: Press STOP once to pause and resume later by pressing PLAY. Press STOP twice to stop playback completely and start from the beginning.

• PAUSE/STEP: Press PAUSE for a still picture. Press PAUSE again to advance frame-by-frame. Press PLAY to resume normal playback.

• SEARCH: Press the ► or ◄ key for fast forward or backward searching. Press it again to increase the speed. Press PLAY to return to normal playback.

• SLOW MOTION (DVD): Press ▲ or ▼ for a slow motion effect. Press again for different speeds. Press PLAY to return to normal.

• SLOW MOTION (VCD/SVCD): Press ▼ for slow motion forward. Press again for different speeds. Press PLAY to return to normal. (Slow backward is not available for Super VCD/VCD/CD).

Audio Control during playback

• MUTE: Press MUTE to disable sound output. Press MUTE again to re-enable sound.

• Audio Channel Selection (VCD/CD/SVCD): Super VCD and VCDs may have multiple audio channels for features like karaoke. Press the AUDIO key on the remote to select different channels (STEREO, LEFT MONO, RIGHT MONO, MIX-MONO).

Repeat

• DVD: Press REPEAT to repeat the current chapter. Press a second time to repeat the title. Press a third time to repeat the whole disc. Press again to exit repeat mode.

• VCD/CD (with PBC OFF): Press REPEAT to repeat the current track. Press a second time to repeat the entire disc. Press again to exit repeat mode.

• Repeat A-B (DVD/VCD/CD): Press REPEAT A-B at your chosen starting point. Press REPEAT A-B again at your chosen end point to repeat the sequence. Press REPEAT A-B a third time to exit.

5 Disc Resume

The PHILIPS DVD728 can resume playback of the last 5 discs from where you stopped, even if the disc was ejected or the power was switched off. Simply load one of the last 5 discs and press PLAY.

OSD (On-Screen Display)

Press the DISPLAY key on the remote to view information about the playing disc.

• Title/Chapter Selection: Use the arrow keys to highlight and change the title or chapter number.

• Time Search: Highlight the time display area. Use the numerical keypad to enter a specific time (e.g., 0:34:27) and press OK to jump to that point.

Zoom (DVD/VCD/SVCD)

Press the ZOOM key to change the image size. Use the arrow keys to view other parts of the zoomed picture. Press ZOOM repeatedly to return to the original size. This function may not be available for some DVD discs.

Special DVD features

• Playing a Title: After loading a disc, use the numerical or arrow keys to highlight a selection on the title menu and press OK to confirm. You can also press the TITLE key during playback to return to this menu.

• Playing a Chapter: During playback, press DISC MENU to return to the chapter menu (if available). Use the numerical or arrow keys to select a chapter and press OK. You can also use the ◄◄ or ►► key to change chapters.

• Camera Angle: For discs with scenes shot from multiple angles, press the ANGLE key to select the desired camera angle.

• Changing the audio language: For discs recorded with multiple languages, press AUDIO repeatedly to select your preferred language.

• Subtitles (DVD/SVCD): Press SUBTITLE repeatedly to select different subtitle languages. Press and hold SUBTITLE for about 2 seconds to switch subtitles on or off.

Special VCD & SVCD Features

• Playback Control (PBC): To activate PBC and navigate index menus on VCDs/SVCDs, press the DISC MENU key to set PBC On. Use the arrow or numerical keys to make selections. To skip the index menu, press DISC MENU to switch PBC off.

• Preview Function: Press the PREVIEW key to see a digest of the disc’s content. You can choose from Track Digest, Disc Interval, or Track Interval to preview tracks or the entire disc in segments.

General Operation

If “WITH MENU” is selected in the Setup Menu, a menu screen will appear before playback. You can use this menu to select folders and files.

• Playback Selection: Use the number keys to select a file directly, or press STOP and then DISC MENU to open the menu. Navigate folders with the arrow keys and press OK to open them. Highlight a file and press OK to start playback from that file.

• Repeat / Shuffle / Single Playback: When the menu is shown, press the REPEAT key repeatedly to cycle through options: SINGLE (plays once), REPEAT ONE (repeats the current picture/song), REPEAT FOLDER (repeats all files in the folder), and SHUFFLE (plays all files randomly).

• Program Playback: From the menu screen, press DISC MENU. The left column shows original files, the right shows programmed files. Select a file on the left and press OK or PLAY to add it to the program on the right (up to 100 files). Highlight a file on the right and press OK to start programmed playback.

Special JPEG Features

• Preview Function: Press STOP during playback to see thumbnails of 12 pictures on the screen. Navigate with the arrow keys and press OK to view a picture, or highlight SLIDE SHOW to start a slideshow.

• Zoom picture: During playback, press the ZOOM key to display the picture at different scales.

• Playback with multi-angle: While viewing a picture, use the arrow keys to manipulate it: ▲ flips vertically, ▼ flips horizontally, ◄ rotates anti-clockwise, ► rotates clockwise.

• Scan Effect: Press ANGLE key repeatedly to choose different transition effects for the slideshow.

Special MP3 Features

• Playback Speed Control: Press RETURN/TITLE to switch to MP3+NAV mode. Then, press ◄ or ► to get different playback speeds. You can also use ◄◄ or ►► to change tracks.

JPEG and MP3 simultaneous playback

1. Start playing MP3 music.

2. Press RETURN/TITLE to switch to MP3+JPEG+NAV mode.

3. Select a picture to start a slideshow. The pictures will now play back in sequence along with the MP3 music.

4. To quit, press DISC MENU to return to the menu and stop the pictures, then press STOP to stop the music.

Basic Operations

1. Press SYSTEM MENU in the STOP mode to enter the Setup Menu.

2. Press the OK key to go to the next level submenu or confirm your selection.

3. Press the ◄► keys to enter a submenu or return to the previous menu.

4. Press the ▲▼ keys to highlight the desired menu.

5. Press SYSTEM MENU to quit the setup menu. Settings will be stored in the player’s memory.

General Setup menu options

• OSD language: Select a language for information displayed on the TV screen.

• Program (not for Picture CD/MP3): Allows you to program a sequence of tracks to play.

• Display Dim: Adjusts the brightness of the display on the front panel of the player (100%, 70%, 40%).

• Disc Lock: Allows you to lock a disc, requiring a password for future playback.

• Screen Saver: Turns the screen saver on or off. It activates in STOP or No DISC mode after 5-6 minutes of inactivity.

Analogue Audio Setup menu

• DOWNMIX mode:

– LT/RT: Use this option if your player is connected to a Dolby Pro Logic decoder.

– STEREO: This option will downmix Dolby Digital signals directly into analogue stereo from the L/R sockets.

• D.R.C. (Dynamic Range Compression): Compresses the dynamic range of the sound output for late-night listening (ON/OFF).

• Sound Mode: Select from preset modes (ROCK, POP, LIVE, DANCE, TECHNO, CLASSIC, SOFT) to optimize sound for different musical styles, or set to OFF for original sound.

• Reverb Mode: Simulates the echo and frequency response of different environments (CONCERT, LIVING ROOM, HALL, ARENA, CHURCH), or set to OFF for original sound.

Digital Audio Setup menu

• Digital Output:

– ALL: Outputs original digital signals.

– PCM ONLY: Choose this if your receiver is PCM-compatible but cannot decode MPEG-2, Dolby Digital, or DTS audio.

• LPCM Output: Selects the output sampling rate (48K or 96K) to match the disc’s recording. A higher sampling rate provides better sound quality.

Video Setup menu

• TV Type: Ensures the PAL or NTSC setting of the system matches your TV set (MULTI, PAL, NTSC).

• TV Display: Select the aspect ratio of your connected TV.

– 16:9: For a wide-screen TV.

– 4:3 LETTERBOX: For a normal TV, displays a wide picture with bands on the top and bottom.

– 4:3 PANSCAN: For a normal TV, displays the wide picture on the whole screen with a portion automatically cut off.

• Smart Picture: Choose a predefined picture setting (STANDARD, BRIGHT, SOFT) or select PERSONAL to use your custom Color Setting adjustments.

• Color Setting: Allows you to personalize the picture by adjusting Brightness, Contrast, Hue, and Saturation.

Preference Setup menu

In the PREFERENCE menu, you can set default languages and other options.

• Audio language: Select the preferred default audio language for DVDs.

• Subtitle language: Select the preferred default subtitle language.

• Disc Menu language: Select the default language for DVD menus.

• Password: Use this to change the six-digit password for Parental Control and Disc Lock. The default password is 842100.

Parental Control (DVD)

This feature allows you to restrict playback of scenes on DVDs based on a rating from 1 to 8. Ratings are country-dependent.

1. In the PREFERENCE menu, select PARENTAL.

2. Use the ▲▼ keys to highlight a rating level (1 KID SAF to 8 ADULT).

3. Press OK to confirm. Scenes with a rating higher than your selection will be skipped.

• To disable parental control, select ADULT.

Default Setup

If you encounter problems, you can use the DEFAULT function to reset all options to factory defaults. This will erase all your personal settings.

1. In the PREFERENCE menu, highlight DEFAULT.

2. Highlight RESET and press OK.

Cleaning the Cabinet

Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use a solution containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives.

Cleaning Discs

• When a disc becomes dirty, clean it with a cleaning cloth. Wipe the disc from the center out.

• Do not wipe in a circular motion.

• Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or antistatic spray intended for analog records.

1. Turn the player bottom up.

2. Locate the slider on the bottom frame. Move the slider to the LEFT with a screwdriver until the tray is ejected.

3. Gently pull the tray out.

Change of Software setting (e.g., Region Code)

1. Press the “OPEN/CLOSE” button on the front of the player to open the disc tray.

2. Enter the 4-digit code <9> <9> <9> <9> on the remote control.

3. Enter one of the keys below to change the software setting:

• REGION CODE USA ==> 1

• REGION CODE EUROPE ==> 2

• REGION CODE AP ==> 3

• REGION CODE LATAM ==> 4

• REGION CODE INDIA / RUSSIA ==> 5

• REGION CODE CHINA ==> 6

• <AUDIO> <7>: Set to setup configuration of DVD728/729/731 European models

The change should take effect immediately, with information indicated on the TV screen. The tray will then close automatically, and the player will go to standby.

Software upgrade via Download disc

1. Open the disc tray on the player.

2. Insert the DOWNLOAD DISC into the player and close the disc tray.

3. The upgrading operation will start automatically.

4. The VFD will display the upgrading progress: ‘ERASE…’ –> ‘WRITE F’ –> … –> ‘WRITE 0’ –> UPGRADE end, or the LED will turn ON and OFF.

5. The upgrading will take approximately 1 minute.

6. Once the software is upgraded, the disc tray will automatically eject.

Important note: Do not power off or interrupt the mains during the upgrading, as this could erase the player’s flash memory.

Verify setting

To check that the setting has changed successfully:

1. Press the “DISPLAY” button on the remote control while the disc tray is open.

2. Two lines of text will appear on the TV screen, showing the application software version, region code, servo software version, and setup configuration.
