The remote control for the PANASONIC SB-HS270 allows you to perform various operations:

• Turn the main unit on/off.

• Select channels, title numbers, and enter numbers.

• Cancel operations.

• Select the source (DVD, iPod, FM tuner, external audio).

• Perform basic playback operations (play, stop, pause, skip, search).

• Show on-screen menus, disc top menus, and the START menu.

• Select or confirm menu items.

• Select play mode or repeat mode.

• Select sound modes, speaker channels, and surround effects.

• Set the Sleep timer.

• Perform basic TV operations (Power, Input, Volume) for Panasonic TVs.

• Adjust the main unit’s volume and mute the sound.

• Select radio stations manually or via presets.

• Exit displays and return to previous screens.

• Switch information on the main unit’s display.

• Turn Whisper-mode Surround on/off.

The PANASONIC SB-HS270 is designed to conserve power with the following features:

• Auto FL display turn-off function: The main unit’s display automatically turns off when the volume is adjusted to “0”.

• Auto power-down function: The main unit will automatically switch to standby mode after 30 minutes of inactivity. This occurs when there is no audio signal from an external device, disc playback is stopped or paused, or if a disc menu is displayed without a selection being made.

If other Panasonic equipment operates when you use the supplied remote, you can change the operating mode to “REMOTE 2”. Both the main unit and remote control must be set to the same mode.

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to select “AUX”.

2. Press and hold the stop button on the main unit and the [2] button on the remote control until the main unit’s display shows “REMOTE 2”.

3. Press and hold [OK] and [2] on the remote control for at least 2 seconds.

To change the mode back to “REMOTE 1”, repeat the steps above, replacing the [2] button with the [1] button.

For optimal sound from your PANASONIC SB-HS270, follow these positioning guidelines:

• Place speakers on flat, secure bases.

• Keep speakers at least 10 mm (13/32″) away from the system for proper ventilation.

• Placing speakers too close to floors, walls, and corners can result in excessive bass. Cover walls and windows with thick curtains to help manage sound.

• In a standard surround layout, place the front, center, and surround speakers at approximately the same distance from your seating position.

• Position the subwoofer to the right or left of the TV, either on the floor or a sturdy shelf, leaving about 30 cm (11 13/16″) of space from the TV to prevent vibration issues.

The center speaker of the PANASONIC SB-HS270 is designed to be used close to a television. However, on some TVs and in certain setups, the speaker’s magnetic field may affect the picture, causing irregular coloring. If this occurs, turn the TV off for about 30 minutes. The TV’s built-in demagnetizing function should correct the problem. If the issue persists, move the speakers further away from the TV.

To connect the speakers to your PANASONIC SB-HS270, follow these steps:

1. Identify the speaker cables and terminals on the back of the main unit, which are color-coded. You can use the supplied speaker cable stickers for easier identification.

2. Connect each speaker cable to the main unit terminal of the same color.

3. On the back of each speaker, connect the wires to the terminals. Insert the wire fully, ensuring you do not insert it beyond the wire insulation.

• The White wire connects to the ‘+’ terminal.

• The Blue line wire connects to the ‘–’ terminal.

Be careful not to cross (short circuit) or reverse the polarity of the speaker wires, as doing so may damage the speakers and the main unit.

Using the indoor antenna:

Connect the supplied FM indoor antenna to the FM ANT (75Ω) terminal on the rear of the main unit. Use adhesive tape to affix the other end of the antenna in a location where radio reception is best.

Using an outdoor antenna:

If radio reception is poor with the indoor antenna, you can use an outdoor antenna (not supplied). An outdoor antenna should be installed by a competent technician. Disconnect the antenna when the unit is not in use and do not use it during an electrical storm.

Recommended Connection (Best Quality):

This connection provides the best picture and audio quality. Use a High Speed HDMI Cable to connect the HDMI AV OUT terminal on the main unit to an HDMI AV IN terminal on your TV. For TV audio, connect an optical digital audio cable from your TV’s OPTICAL OUT terminal to the DIGITAL AUDIO IN OPTICAL terminal on the main unit. This setup is ideal for VIERA Link “HDAVI Control” functionality with compatible Panasonic TVs.

Connection with an ARC compatible TV:

If your TV supports ARC (Audio Return Channel), you only need to connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI (ARC) AV OUT terminal on the main unit to the TV’s designated ARC-compatible HDMI terminal. This single cable will carry video to the TV and audio from the TV back to the home theater system.

Alternative connection to a TV:

If your TV does not have HDMI or optical outputs, you can use an analog audio cable (red/white connectors) to connect the TV’s AUDIO OUT terminals to the AUX terminals on the main unit. For video from the main unit to the TV, connect a video cable (yellow connector) from the VIDEO OUT terminal on the main unit to the VIDEO IN terminal on the TV.

The “Easy setup” screen helps you make necessary initial settings for your PANASONIC SB-HS270.

1. Turn on your TV and select the appropriate video input mode for the home theater system.

2. Press the power button to turn on the unit. The “Easy setup” screen will appear automatically.

3. Press the arrow buttons to select “Yes” and press [OK].

4. Follow the on-screen messages and use the arrow buttons and [OK] to configure the following settings:

• Language: Select the on-screen menu language.

• TV aspect: Select the aspect ratio that matches your TV.

• Speaker layout: Choose “Surround layout (Recommended)” or “Front layout (Alternative)” based on your speaker placement.

• Speaker check: Listen to test tones to confirm speaker connections.

• Speaker output: Make surround sound settings for the speaker output.

• TV audio: Select the audio input connection you are using for your TV (AUX, ARC, or DIGITAL IN).

5. Press [OK] to finish the “Easy setup”.

You can run this setup anytime by selecting “Easy setup” in the Setup menu.

You can automatically preset up to 30 FM stations on your PANASONIC SB-HS270.

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to select “FM”.

2. Press [MENU]. The display will show “LOWEST” (factory preset), which means auto presetting will begin with the lowest frequency.

3. Press and hold [OK]. Release the button when “FM AUTO” is displayed on the unit’s screen. The tuner will automatically scan and preset all the stations it can receive into the channels in ascending order.

“SET OK” is displayed when the process is complete. If “ERROR” is displayed, the process was unsuccessful, and you should try presetting stations manually.

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] on the remote control to select “FM”.

2. Press the numbered buttons to select a channel directly. For a 2-digit number like 12, press [≥10], then [1], then [2]. Alternatively, you can press the up or down arrow buttons to cycle through the preset channels.

If the radio signal is noisy, press and hold [PLAY MODE] to display “MONO”. This can improve reception for weak stereo signals. To cancel, press and hold the button again until “AUTO ST” is displayed.

The START menu allows you to select sources, change settings, and access playback menus.

1. Press [START] to show the START menu on your TV screen.

2. Use the arrow buttons to select an item (e.g., DVD/CD, Input select, Setup) and press [OK].

3. Use the arrow buttons to make your selection or setting, then press [OK].

To exit the START menu at any time, press [START] again.

When a disc is loaded, you can also access disc-specific options like “Playback Disc” or “TOP MENU” directly from the START menu.

To configure the audio settings for sources connected via the DIGITAL AUDIO IN OPTICAL or HDMI AV OUT terminals on your PANASONIC SB-HS270:

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] several times to select “D-IN” or “ARC”.

2. Press [PLAY MODE] to enter the settings menu for the digital input.

3. Use the up and down arrow buttons to select the mode you wish to change (DUAL, DRC, PCM FIX, or STB).

4. While the selected mode is displayed, press the left and right arrow buttons to choose the desired setting.

The available settings are detailed in the table below:

You can change the surround sound effect by pressing the [SURROUND] button on the remote control. The available options depend on the speaker layout you selected in the Easy Setup.

For “Surround layout (Recommended)” mode:

• STANDARD: Sound is output as it was recorded/encoded.

• MULTI-CH: Enjoy sound from the front and surround speakers, even with a 2-channel source.

• MANUAL: Allows you to select from more specific modes using the left/right arrow buttons:

• DOLBY PLII MOVIE: Suitable for movies or videos recorded in Dolby Surround.

• DOLBY PLII MUSIC: Adds 5.1-channel effects to stereo sources.

• S.SRD (Super Surround): Enjoy sound from all speakers with stereo sources.

• STEREO: Sound is output only from the front speakers and the subwoofer.

For “Front layout (Alternative)” mode:

• STANDARD: Stereo sources are output as 2.1-channel audio. Surround sources provide a 5.1-channel surround-like effect.

• STEREO: Plays any source in stereo. Surround effect is unavailable.

• A.SRD (Advanced Surround): Enjoy a surround effect with any audio source.

Whisper-mode Surround enhances the audio effect for low-volume 5.1-channel sound, which is convenient for late-night viewing. To use it, simply press the [W.SRD] button on the remote control. Each press toggles the function ON or OFF.

Adjusting Individual Speaker Level (Surround Layout Only):

This is effective when playing 5.1-channel sound or using DOLBY PLII/”S.SRD”.

1. Press and hold [–CH SELECT] to select the speaker you want to adjust. Each press cycles through the channels (L → C → R → RS → LS → SW).

2. While the speaker channel (C, RS, LS, SW, or S for both surrounds) is displayed, press the up or down arrow buttons to increase or decrease the level for that speaker (from -6 dB to +6 dB).

Adjusting Speaker Balance:

1. Press and hold [–CH SELECT] to select “L” or “R”.

2. While “L” or “R” is selected, press the left or right arrow buttons to adjust the speaker balance.

Before you begin, turn on your TV and select the correct video input for the home theater system.

1. Press the power button to turn on the unit.

2. Press [DVD] to select “DVD/CD” as the source.

3. Press [▲ OPEN/CLOSE] to open the disc tray.

4. Load a disc onto the tray with the label facing up.

5. Press [► PLAY] to start playback. You can also close the tray by pressing [▲ OPEN/CLOSE], and playback will start automatically.

Use the [+, VOL, -] buttons to adjust the volume.

• Stop: Press [■ STOP]. When “RESUME” is on the display, the unit has memorized the stop position. Press [► PLAY] to resume from that point. Press [■ STOP] again to clear the position.

• Pause: Press [|| PAUSE]. Press [► PLAY] to restart play.

• Skip: Press [SKIP |◄◄] or [SKIP ►►|] to go to the previous or next track/chapter.

• Search: During playback, press and hold [SEARCH ◄◄] or [SEARCH ►►] to search backward or forward at up to 4 speeds.

• Slow-motion: During pause, press [SEARCH ◄◄] or [SEARCH ►►] for slow-motion playback at up to 3 speeds (VCD forward only).

• Frame-by-frame: During pause, press the left or right arrow buttons to advance one frame at a time (DVD-V/VCD only, VCD forward only).

You can program up to 30 tracks or files (CD, MP3, JPEG) to play in a specific order on your PANASONIC SB-HS270.

1. While playback is stopped, press [PLAY MODE] to select the play mode. This will bring up the “Music Program” menu for CD/MP3 or “Picture Program” menu for JPEG.

2. Use the arrow buttons to highlight a track or file you want to add to the program, then press [OK]. The item will be added to the program list.

3. Repeat step 2 to program other items.

4. Press [► PLAY] to start playing your programmed sequence.

To clear a selected item from the program, highlight it in the list and press [CANCEL]. To clear the entire program, select “Clear All” and press [OK].

To repeat content during playback on your PANASONIC SB-HS270:

1. During play, press and hold [-REPEAT] to show the repeat mode options.

2. While the repeat mode is displayed, press [-REPEAT] again to select the item you want to repeat. For example, on a DVD-Video, you can choose to repeat the current Chapter or the entire Title.

3. To cancel repeat play, select “Off”.

This function works only when the elapsed play time can be displayed and is also available for JPEG content.

To access and use the on-screen menus for playback adjustments:

1. Press [FUNCTIONS] to show the on-screen menu. Each press cycles through the available menus: Menu 1 (Disc), Menu 2 (Video), and Menu 3 (Audio).

2. Use the up and down arrow buttons to highlight the item you want to adjust (e.g., Subtitle, Angle, Zoom) and press [OK].

3. Use the arrow buttons to make your desired setting and press [OK] to confirm.

The items shown will vary depending on the type of disc being played.

Preparation:

• To view photos/videos, ensure the video connection from the PANASONIC SB-HS270 to your TV is made. Turn on the TV and select the correct video input.

• Before connecting/disconnecting, turn the main unit off or lower the volume to its minimum.

Connection:

1. Open the Dock for iPod/iPhone on the main unit. Push the center of the drawer, then pull it out until it clicks.

2. Attach the dock adapter (not supplied) that is compatible with your iPod/iPhone model.

3. Connect your iPod/iPhone (not supplied) firmly to the dock.

Operation:

1. Press [iPod] on the remote to select “IPOD” as the source. The iPod/iPhone will automatically switch to this unit’s display mode.

2. Press [FUNCTIONS] to select the desired menu (Music menu, Video menu, or iPod/iPhone menu).

3. Use the arrow buttons to navigate and select items, and press [OK] to play. Play will start from the selected song or video.

You can change various player settings through the Setup menu.

1. Press [DVD] to select “DVD/CD” source.

2. Press [START] to show the START menu.

3. Use the arrow buttons to select “Setup” and press [OK].

4. A menu will appear with categories: Language, Display, Audio, Video, HDMI, and Others. Use the arrow buttons to select a category and press [OK].

5. In the selected menu, use the up/down arrow buttons to select an item to change and press [OK].

6. Use the left/right arrow buttons to select the desired setting and press [OK] to confirm.

To exit the screen, press [START]. The settings will remain intact even if you switch the unit to standby.

The PANASONIC SB-HS270 can play the following types of discs:

Commercial Discs:

• DVD-Video (DVD)

• Video CD (VCD), including SVCD

• Music CDs (CD)

Recorded Discs:

• DVD-R/RW: DVD-Video Format, MP3 format, JPEG format

• DVD-R DL: DVD-Video Format

• +R/+RW/+R DL: +VR (+R/+RW Video Recording) Format

• CD-R/RW: CD-DA format, MP3 format, JPEG format

Before playback, discs should be finalized on the device they were recorded on. Playback may not be possible in some cases due to the disc type, recording condition, or how the files were created.

Discs that cannot be played: Blu-ray Discs, HD DVD, AVCHD discs, DVD-Audio, DVD-ROM, DivX discs, and others not listed above.

You can mount all speakers (except the subwoofer) of your PANASONIC SB-HS270 to a wall. Ensure the wall or pillar can support at least 10 kg (22 lbs) per screw. It is recommended to consult a qualified building contractor.

1. Drive a screw (not supplied) into the wall at the desired location. The screw should protrude from the wall by 3 mm to 5 mm (1/8″ to 3/16″), and the screw head should be between 7.0 mm and 9.4 mm in diameter.

2. Securely fit the speaker onto the screw using the keyhole slot(s) on the back of the speaker. Ensure the speaker slides down so that the screw head is in the narrow part of the slot to prevent it from falling.

For added safety, you can attach a string (not supplied) from the speaker to a screw eye (not supplied) secured in the wall.

If there is no power to your PANASONIC SB-HS270, please check that the AC power supply cord is inserted securely into both the main unit and the household AC outlet.

If the remote control for your PANASONIC SB-HS270 is unresponsive, please try the following:

• Check that the batteries are installed correctly, observing the + and – polarities.

• The batteries may be depleted. Replace them with new ones.

• Aim the remote control directly at the remote control signal sensor on the front of the main unit and ensure there are no obstructions between them.

If you are experiencing no picture or sound from your PANASONIC SB-HS270, please perform the following checks:

• Verify that all video and speaker connections are secure.

• Check the power status of all connected equipment (TV, home theater system) and ensure the correct input source is selected on your TV.

• Make sure the disc you are trying to play has content recorded on it.

• Note that during HD JPEG playback, there will be no video output from the yellow VIDEO OUT terminal; video is only available through HDMI.

1. Ensure playback is stopped and the source is set to “DVD/CD”.

2. Press and hold the stop button ([■]) on the main unit AND the [≥10] button on the remote control at the same time.

4. Turn the unit off and then on again. All settings, including the password, will be returned to their default values.

If the picture from your PANASONIC SB-HS270 does not display correctly on your TV screen, you can try the following adjustments:

• Change the “TV Aspect” setting in the player’s Video menu to match your TV’s screen shape (e.g., 16:9, 4:3 Pan&Scan, 4:3 Letterbox).

If you are not hearing sound from the surround speakers of your PANASONIC SB-HS270, the cause is likely the current surround sound mode. Try the following:

• If you are using the “Surround layout (Recommended)” mode (with speakers placed around the room), press the [SURROUND] button on the remote to select “MULTI-CH”. This mode ensures sound is sent to the surround speakers even with stereo sources.
