Here are the primary functions of the remote control for your PANASONIC SB-HF270:

• Power: Turn the main unit on/off.

• Numbered buttons (0-9, ≥10): Select channels, title numbers, etc.

• CANCEL: Cancels an operation.

• Source Select ([DVD], [iPod], [EXT-IN, RADIO]): Selects the input source (Disc, iPod/iPhone, FM tuner, AUX, ARC, D-IN).

• Basic Playback Controls: PLAY, STOP, PAUSE, SKIP, SEARCH, SLOW.

• FUNCTIONS: Shows the on-screen menu.

• TOP MENU/MENU: Shows the disc’s top menu or disc menu.

• Arrow keys & OK: Select or confirm menu items; used for frame-by-frame playback.

• PLAY MODE/REPEAT: Selects the play mode or sets the repeat mode.

The main unit has the following controls:

• POWER /I: Press to switch the unit from on to standby mode or vice versa. In standby mode, the unit still consumes a small amount of power.

• Open/Close [▲]: Opens or closes the disc tray.

• Volume +/-: Adjusts the volume.

• iPod/iPhone Dock: Connect your iPod or iPhone here.

• Stop [■]: Stops playback.

• Play [►]: Starts playback.

To set the sleep timer:

1. Press and hold the [-SLEEP] button on the remote control.

2. While the time is shown on the main unit’s display, press [-SLEEP] repeatedly to cycle through the options: SLEEP 30 -> SLEEP 60 -> SLEEP 90 -> SLEEP120 -> OFF (Cancel).

To confirm the remaining time, press and hold the button again.

If other Panasonic equipment operates when you use the supplied remote, you can change the remote control operating mode to “REMOTE 2”. Both the main unit and remote must be set to the same mode.

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] on the remote to select “AUX”.

2. Press and hold [■] on the main unit and [2] on the remote control until the main unit’s display shows “REMOTE 2”.

3. Press and hold [OK] and [2] on the remote control for at least 2 seconds.

To change the mode back to “REMOTE 1”, repeat the steps above but replace the [2] button with the [1] button.

The PANASONIC SB-HF270 is designed to conserve power with the following features:

• Auto FL display turn-off function: The main unit’s display automatically turns off when the volume is adjusted to “0”.

• Auto power-down function: The main unit will automatically switch to standby mode after 30 minutes of inactivity, such as when disc playback is stopped or there is no audio signal from an external device.

7) Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

8) Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.

9) Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug.

10) Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.

11) Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.

12) Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/apparatus combination to avoid injury from tip-over.

13) Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.

14) Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

For the best sound field, follow these guidelines for speaker placement:

• Place speakers on flat, secure bases.

• Keep speakers at least 10 mm (13/32″) away from the main unit for proper ventilation.

• Avoid placing speakers too close to floors, walls, and corners, as this can result in excessive bass.

• In the recommended “Surround layout,” place the front, center, and surround speakers at approximately the same distance from your seating position. The front speakers should be at a 60-degree angle from the center, and the surround speakers at a 120-degree angle.

• Place the subwoofer to the right or left of the TV, on the floor or a sturdy shelf, about 30 cm (11 13/16″) away from the TV to avoid vibration.

• The main unit should have at least 5 cm (2″) of space on all sides for ventilation.

The center speaker is designed for use near a TV, but on some TVs and setups, the picture may be affected. If this happens, turn the TV off for about 30 minutes. The TV’s demagnetizing function should correct the problem. If it persists, move the speakers further away from the TV.

1. Turn off all equipment before making connections.

2. On the back of the main unit, locate the speaker terminals. Match the colored speaker cable to the terminal of the same color.

3. On the back of each speaker, insert the wire fully into the terminals. The white wire connects to the ‘+’ terminal and the blue line wire connects to the ‘-‘ terminal.

4. Be careful not to cross (short circuit) or reverse the polarity of the speaker wires, as doing so may damage the speakers.

Using the supplied indoor antenna:

1. Connect the FM indoor antenna to the FM ANT (75Ω) terminal on the rear of the main unit.

2. Affix the other end of the antenna with adhesive tape to a wall or surface where reception is best.

Using an outdoor antenna (if reception is poor):

1. Connect a 75 Ω coaxial cable (not supplied) from an outdoor antenna to the FM ANT (75Ω) terminal.

• The outdoor antenna should be installed by a competent technician.

• Disconnect the antenna when the unit is not in use or during an electrical storm.

There are several ways to connect your PANASONIC SB-HF270 to a TV. Turn off all equipment before connecting.

Recommended Connection (with VIERA Link):

This provides the best picture and audio quality and allows for linked operations with a compatible Panasonic TV.

1. Connect a High Speed HDMI cable (not supplied) from the HDMI AV OUT terminal on the main unit to an HDMI input terminal on your TV.

2. Connect an optical digital audio cable (not supplied) from the OPTICAL OUT terminal on your TV to the DIGITAL AUDIO IN OPTICAL terminal on the main unit.

Connection with an ARC (Audio Return Channel) compatible TV:

If your TV supports ARC, you only need one cable for video and TV audio.

1. Connect a High Speed HDMI cable from the HDMI AV OUT (ARC) terminal on the main unit to your TV’s ARC compatible HDMI input terminal.

Alternative Connection (Analog):

1. Connect a video cable (not supplied) from the VIDEO OUT terminal on the main unit to a VIDEO IN terminal on your TV.

2. Connect an audio cable (not supplied) from the AUDIO OUT terminals on your TV to the AUX terminals on the main unit.

To output original surround audio from your Set Top Box (STB), Blu-ray player, etc., to the PANASONIC SB-HF270:

1. Connect an optical digital audio cable (not supplied) from the OPTICAL OUT terminal on your STB to the DIGITAL AUDIO IN OPTICAL terminal on the main unit.

If the DIGITAL AUDIO IN OPTICAL terminal is already in use for TV audio, you can reconnect the TV audio to the AUX terminal using an analog audio cable.

The Easy Setup screen appears automatically the first time you turn on the unit to help you make necessary settings.

Preparation: Turn on your TV and select the correct video input for the PANASONIC SB-HF270.

1. Press the power button [POWER /I] to turn on the unit.

2. When the Easy Setup screen appears, press the arrow keys to select “Yes” and press [OK].

3. Follow the on-screen messages to make the following settings using the arrow keys and [OK]:

• Language: Select the on-screen menu language.

• TV aspect: Select the aspect ratio to suit your TV (e.g., 16:9).

• Speaker layout: Select “Surround layout (Recommended)” or “Front layout (Alternative)” based on your speaker placement.

• Speaker check: Listen to test tones to confirm speaker connections.

• Speaker output: Make surround sound setting for speaker output.

• TV audio: Select the audio input you used to connect the TV (“AUX”, “ARC”, or “DIGITAL IN”).

4. Press [OK] to finish the “Easy setup”.

You can perform this setup anytime by selecting “Easy setup” in the Setup menu.

You can preset up to 30 FM stations automatically.

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to select “FM”.

2. Press [MENU]. By default, this is set to “LOWEST” to begin the scan from the lowest frequency.

3. Press and hold [OK]. Release the button when “FM AUTO” is displayed.

The tuner will start presetting all receivable stations in ascending order. “SET OK” is displayed when the process is complete.

Listening to Preset Channels:

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to select “FM”.

2. Use the numbered buttons on the remote to select a preset channel. For a 2-digit number like 12, press [≥10] then [1] then [2]. Alternatively, use the [v, ^] buttons.

Manual Tuning:

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to select “FM”.

2. Press [SEARCH◄◄, SEARCH►►] to select the frequency. To start auto tuning, press and hold either button until the frequency starts scrolling; it will stop when a station is found.

Presetting Stations Manually:

1. Tune to the station you want to preset.

2. Press [OK].

3. While the frequency is flashing, use the numbered buttons to select the channel number you want to save it to, then press [OK].

The START menu allows you to select sources, change settings, and access playback menus.

1. Press [START] to show the START menu.

2. Use the arrow keys [◄, ►] to select an item (e.g., “Input select”, “Setup”) and press [OK].

3. Use the arrow keys [▲, ▼] to make a setting and press [OK].

• Input select: Choose from DVD/CD, FM RADIO, AUX, ARC, DIGITAL IN, or iPod.

• Setup: Change the settings for the unit.

• When a disc is loaded, you can also access playback options like “Playback Disc” from the START menu.

To exit, press [START] again.

When listening to audio from the “D-IN” (Digital In) or “ARC” source, you can adjust the following settings. Underlined items are the factory presets.

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to select “D-IN” or “ARC”.

2. Press [PLAY MODE] and then use [▲, ▼] to select the mode you want to change.

3. While the mode is displayed, use [◄, ►] to select the desired setting.

Enjoying Surround Sound Effects:

Press [SURROUND] repeatedly to cycle through the available surround modes. The options vary depending on your selected speaker layout (“Surround layout” or “Front layout” in Easy Setup).

• For “Surround layout (Recommended)”:

• STANDARD: Sound is output as it was recorded/encoded.

• MULTI-CH: Enjoy sound from all speakers even with a 2-channel source.

• MANUAL: Allows selection of other modes like DOLBY PLII MOVIE, DOLBY PLII MUSIC, S.SRD (Super Surround), and STEREO (front speakers only).

• For “Front layout (Alternative)”:

• STANDARD: Stereo source is output as 2.1-channel.

• STEREO: Play any source in stereo.

• A.SRD (Advanced Surround): Enjoy surround effect with any audio source.

Selecting a Sound Mode (EQ):

1. Press [SOUND] to select a sound mode to adjust (EQ, SUBW LVL, C.FOCUS).

2. While the selected mode is displayed, press [◄, ►] to make the settings.

• EQ (Equalizer): Choose from FLAT, HEAVY, CLEAR, SOFT.

• SUBW LVL (Subwoofer level): Adjust the amount of bass (LEVEL 1 to 4).

• C.FOCUS (Center Focus): Makes the center speaker sound seem like it is coming from within the TV (ON/OFF).

This function is available only when “Surround layout (Recommended)” mode is selected in “Speaker layout”. It is effective when playing 5.1-channel sound.

1. Press and hold [-CH SELECT] to select the speaker channel you want to adjust. Press the button repeatedly to cycle through: L (Left) -> C (Center) -> R (Right) -> RS (Right Surround) -> LS (Left Surround) -> SW (Subwoofer).

2. While “C”, “RS”, “LS”, “SW”, or “S” (Surround) is selected, press [▲] (increase) or [▼] (decrease) to adjust the level for that speaker (-6 dB to +6 dB).

To adjust the front speaker balance, select “L” or “R” in step 1, then use [◄, ►] in step 2 to adjust the balance.

Preparation: Turn on your TV and select the correct video input.

1. Press the power button [POWER /I] to turn on the unit.

2. Press [DVD] to select “DVD/CD”.

3. Press [▲ OPEN/CLOSE] to open the disc tray.

4. Load a disc with the label facing up.

5. Press [► PLAY] to start playback. Press [+, VOL, -] to adjust the volume.

Basic Controls:

• Stop [■]: The unit memorizes the stop position. Press [► PLAY] to resume. Press [■] again to clear the position.

• Pause [II]: Press to pause. Press [► PLAY] to restart.

• Skip [SKIP ◄◄, SKIP ►►]: Skip to the previous or next track/chapter.

• Search [SEARCH ◄◄, SEARCH ►►]: Search backward or forward during play.

• Slow-motion [SEARCH ◄◄, SEARCH ►►]: Play in slow-motion during pause.

• Frame-by-frame [◄II, II►]: Advance one frame at a time during pause.

These functions are available for CD, MP3, and JPEG discs.

Program Play (up to 30 items):

1. While the disc is stopped, press [PLAY MODE] to open the Program menu.

2. Use the arrow keys [▲, ▼] to select a track or file you want to program and press [OK].

3. Repeat step 2 to program other items.

4. Press [► PLAY] to start program playback.

To clear a programmed item, select it and press [CANCEL]. To clear the whole program, select “Clear All” and press [OK].

Random Play:

1. While the disc is stopped, press [PLAY MODE] until “RND” appears.

2. For MP3/JPEG discs, use the arrow keys to select the desired group (folder) and press [OK].

3. Press [► PLAY] to start random playback of all tracks (CD) or the contents of the selected group (MP3/JPEG).

1. Press [FUNCTIONS] during playback to show the on-screen menu. Press it repeatedly to cycle through Menu 1 (Disc), Menu 2 (Video), Menu 3 (Audio), and Exit.

2. Use the arrow keys [▲, ▼] to select an item and press [OK].

3. Use the arrow keys [▲, ▼] to change the setting and press [OK].

Some available options include:

• Menu 1 (Disc):

• Track/Title/Chapter Search: Start playback from a specific point.

• Audio: Select the audio soundtrack (DVD-V) or channel (VCD).

• Play Speed: Change the playback speed (DVD-V).

• Repeat Mode / A-B Repeat: Set repeat options.

• Subtitle: Select the subtitle language (DVD-V).

• Angle: Select a different camera angle (DVD-V).

• Menu 2 (Video):

• Transfer Mode: Select the conversion method for video output.

• Zoom: Zoom in on the picture.

• Menu 3 (Audio):

• Dialog Enhancer: Makes dialog in movies easier to hear (DVD-V).

VIERA Link “HDAVI Control” is a function that offers linked operations between the PANASONIC SB-HF270 and a compatible Panasonic TV (VIERA) connected via an HDMI cable.

Preparation:

1. Ensure the HDMI connection has been made correctly.

2. In the Setup menu, go to the HDMI menu and set “VIERA Link” to “On” (this is the default setting).

3. Set the “HDAVI Control” operations on your TV.

4. Turn on both devices and select the home theater’s input channel on the TV.

With VIERA Link, you can perform functions like:

• One touch play: Pressing play on the home theater remote turns on the TV and switches to the correct input.

• Auto input switching: Starting play on the unit automatically switches the TV’s input.

• Power off link: Turning off the TV also turns off the home theater system.

• Speaker selection: Use the TV menu to choose between the TV speakers and the home theater speakers. The TV remote can control the home theater volume when its speakers are active.

Connecting the iPod/iPhone:

1. Open the dock on the main unit by pushing the center of the drawer and then pulling it until it clicks.

2. Attach the correct dock adapter (not supplied) for your device model until it is firmly in place.

3. Connect your iPod/iPhone (not supplied) firmly to the dock.

Enjoying Music/Videos:

1. Press [iPod] on the remote to select “IPOD” as the source.

2. Press [FUNCTIONS] to select the music or video menu on the TV screen.

3. Use the arrow keys [▲, ▼, ◄, ►] to navigate the menus (Playlists, Artists, etc.) and press [OK] to make a selection.

4. Play starts from the selected song or video. Use the remote’s playback controls (Play, Pause, Skip, etc.) to control the media.

To view photos/videos, you must also connect the VIDEO OUT terminal on the main unit to your TV.

You can change various player settings through the Setup menu. Underlined items are the factory defaults.

1. Press [DVD] to select “DVD/CD”.

2. Press [START] to show the START menu.

3. Use the arrow keys to select “Setup” and press [OK].

4. Use the arrow keys to select a menu (e.g., Language, Display, Audio, Video, HDMI, Others) and press [OK].

5. Use [▲, ▼] to select the item you want to change and press [OK].

6. Use [◄, ►] to select the desired setting and press [OK].

To exit, press [START].

Example Settings:

• Language Menu: Choose the language for on-screen display, audio, subtitles, and disc menus.

• Video Menu:

• TV Aspect: 16:9, 4:3 Pan&Scan, 4:3 Letterbox.

• Time Delay: Adjust audio sync for plasma displays. Select 0ms/Auto for VIERA Link.

• Video Resolution: Set HDMI output resolution (Auto, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i).

• Others Menu:

• Ratings: Set a rating level to limit DVD-Video playback.

• Restore Default Settings: Return all values in the Setup menu to factory defaults.

Note: Discs that cannot be played include Blu-ray Discs, HD DVD, AVCHD discs, DVD-Audio, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, WMA discs, DivX discs, and Photo CD.

• Clean the unit with a soft, dry cloth.

• Never use alcohol, paint thinner, or benzine to clean the unit.

• Before using a chemically treated cloth, carefully read the instructions that came with the cloth.

• Do not use commercially available lens cleaners as they may cause malfunction.

• Before moving the unit, ensure the disc tray is empty to avoid severely damaging the disc and the unit.

You can attach the front, center, and surround speakers to a wall. The wall or pillar must be able to support 10 kg (22 lbs) per screw. It is recommended to consult a qualified building contractor.

1. Drive a screw (not supplied) into the wall. The screw head should be between 7.0 mm and 9.4 mm, and it should protrude 3 mm to 5 mm from the wall.

2. Fit the speaker securely onto the screw(s) using the keyhole slot(s) on the back. Ensure the screw is fully seated in the narrow part of the slot so it does not fall if moved.

You can also use a string and screw eye (not supplied) as an extra measure to prevent the speaker from falling.

• No power: Insert the AC power supply cord securely into the wall outlet and the main unit.

• Unit automatically switches to standby:

• The Sleep timer may have reached its set time limit.

• The auto power-down function will automatically switch the unit to standby after 30 minutes of inactivity.

• When using VIERA Link, the unit may turn off when the TV input is changed. This is normal.

• “NO PLAY”: You have inserted a disc the unit cannot play (e.g., Blu-ray), a blank disc, or a disc that has not been finalized.

• “NO DISC”: No disc is inserted, or it is inserted incorrectly.

• “IPOD OVER CURRENT ERROR”: The iPod/iPhone is drawing too much power. Remove the device, then turn the unit off and on again.

• “F61”: There is a speaker connection problem. Check and correct the speaker cable connections. If the problem persists, consult the dealer.

• “F76”: There is a power supply problem. Consult the dealer.

• “DVD U11”: The disc may be dirty. Wipe it clean.

• “DVD H[number]” or “DVD F[number]”: Trouble may have occurred. Turn the unit off and then back on. Alternatively, turn it off, disconnect the AC power cord, and then reconnect it.

• “REMOTE 1” or “REMOTE 2”: The remote control and main unit modes do not match. Change the mode to match.

• Check that the batteries are installed correctly with the correct polarity (+ and -).

• The batteries may be depleted. Replace them with new ones.

• Aim the remote control at the remote control signal sensor on the front of the main unit, avoiding obstacles.

• If other Panasonic products respond to the remote, change the remote control operating mode.

• Check all video and speaker connections to ensure they are secure.

• Check the power and input settings on your TV and any other connected equipment.

• Check that the disc has content recorded on it.

• If using an HDMI connection for audio, ensure “Audio Out” in the HDMI Setup menu is set to “On”.

• If your TV is not ARC compatible and you are only using an HDMI cable, an additional audio connection (optical or analog) is necessary for TV sound.

• During playback of a DTS audio source, there will be no sound from the speakers. Select a different audio source, such as Dolby Digital.

To reset the ratings password and all other settings to their factory defaults:

1. With the unit on and stopped, select “DVD/CD” as the source.

2. Press and hold the [■] (stop) button on the main unit and the [≥10] button on the remote control at the same time until “RESET” appears on the main unit’s display.

3. Turn the unit off and on again. All settings will be returned to their default values.

• The sound you are playing may be in stereo (2-channel). To hear audio from the surround speakers with a stereo source:

• If using the “Surround layout (Recommended)” mode, press [SURROUND] on the remote to select “MULTI-CH”.

• If using the “Front layout (Alternative)” mode, press [SURROUND] on the remote to select “A.SRD”.

• Change the “TV Aspect” setting in the Video menu (16:9, 4:3 Pan&Scan, 4:3 Letterbox) to match your TV.

• Use your TV’s aspect ratio controls to adjust the picture.

• Change the zoom setting in “Zoom” in Menu 2 during playback.
