Here is a guide to the main functions on the remote control:

• Turn the main unit on/off: Press the power button.

• Select channels and title numbers: Use the numbered buttons (0-9, ≥10).

• Cancel: Press the [CANCEL] button.

• Source select:

– Press [DVD] to select disc as the source.

– Press [iPod] to select iPod/iPhone as the source.

– Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to cycle through FM tuner, AUX, ARC, and D-IN.

• Basic playback operations: Use the PLAY, STOP, PAUSE, SKIP, and SEARCH buttons.

• Show on-screen menu: Press [FUNCTIONS].

• Show a disc top menu/menu: Press [TOP MENU] or [MENU].

• Select or confirm menu items: Use the arrow keys and the [OK] button.

• Adjust volume: Press [+, VOL, -].

• Mute the sound: Press [MUTE]. To cancel, press [MUTE] again or adjust the volume.

• Set the Sleep timer: Press and hold [-SLEEP]. While the time is shown, press the button repeatedly to cycle through SLEEP 30, 60, 90, 120, and OFF.

• Switch information on display: Press [FL DISPLAY].

• Turn Whisper-mode Surround on/off: Press [W.SRD].

Other Panasonic equipment may function when you operate the unit. To avoid this, you can set the remote control operating mode to “REMOTE 2”. The main unit and remote control must be set to the same mode.

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to select “AUX”.

2. Press and hold the stop button on the main unit and [2] on the remote control until the main unit’s display shows “REMOTE 2”.

3. Press and hold [OK] and [2] on the remote control for at least 2 seconds.

To change the mode back to “REMOTE 1”, repeat the steps above, but replace [2] with [1] in steps 2 and 3.

The PANASONIC SB-HC270 is designed to conserve power with the following features:

• Auto FL display turn-off function: The main unit’s display automatically turns off when the volume is adjusted to “0”.

• Auto power-down function: The main unit will automatically switch to standby mode after 30 minutes of inactivity, such as when disc playback is stopped or there is no audio signal from an external device.

12) Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus.

13) Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.

14) Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

For optimal bass and sound field, please note the following points:

• Place speakers on flat, secure bases.

• Keep speakers at least 10 mm (13/32″) away from the system for proper ventilation.

• Placing speakers too close to floors, walls, and corners can result in excessive bass. Cover walls and windows with thick curtains.

Setup example (“Surround layout (Recommended)”):

Place the front, center, and surround speakers at approximately the same distance from the seating position. Place the front left and right speakers to form a 60° angle with the listening position. Place the surround left and right speakers to form a 120° angle with the listening position.

• Place the subwoofer to the right or left of the TV, on the floor or a sturdy shelf, leaving about 30 cm (11 13/16″) from the TV.

The center speaker is designed to be used close to a TV, but the picture may be affected on some TVs and setup combinations. If this occurs, turn the TV off for about 30 minutes. The demagnetizing function of the TV should correct the problem. If it persists, move the speakers further away from the TV.

Speaker Connections:

Connect the speaker cables from each speaker to the corresponding colored terminals on the rear of the main unit. Insert the wire fully, taking care not to insert beyond the wire insulation. Be careful not to cross (short circuit) or reverse the polarity of the speaker wires.

Radio Antenna Connections:

• Using the indoor antenna (supplied): Connect the FM indoor antenna to the FM ANT (75Ω) terminal on the main unit. Use adhesive tape to affix the other end of the antenna where reception is best.

• Using an outdoor antenna (optional): If radio reception is poor, connect a 75 Ω coaxial cable (not supplied) from an FM outdoor antenna to the FM ANT (75Ω) terminal. Disconnect the outdoor antenna when the unit is not in use or during an electrical storm.

The recommended connection provides the best picture and audio quality and enables VIERA Link “HDAVI Control” functions with a compatible Panasonic TV.

• For a TV without ARC (Audio Return Channel): Connect a High Speed HDMI cable (not supplied) from the HDMI AV OUT terminal on the main unit to an HDMI input on your TV. Then, connect an optical digital audio cable (not supplied) from the TV’s OPTICAL OUT to the DIGITAL AUDIO IN OPTICAL terminal on the main unit to listen to TV audio.

• For a TV with ARC: Connect a High Speed HDMI cable (not supplied) from the HDMI AV OUT (ARC) terminal on the main unit to the TV’s ARC compatible HDMI input terminal. This single cable can carry video to the TV and audio from the TV back to the unit.

The Easy setup screen assists you in making necessary settings when you first turn on the unit. Ensure your TV is on and set to the correct video input.

1. Press the power button to turn on the unit. The Easy setup screen appears automatically.

2. Press the arrow keys to select “Yes” and press [OK].

3. Follow the on-screen messages and use the arrow and [OK] buttons to make the following settings:

• Language: Select the on-screen menu language.

• TV aspect: Select the aspect ratio to suit your TV.

• Speaker layout: Select “Surround layout (Recommended)” or “Front layout (Alternative)”.

• Speaker check: Listen to confirm speaker connections.

• Speaker output: Make surround sound setting.

• TV audio: Select the audio input connection from your TV (AUX, ARC, or DIGITAL IN).

4. Press [OK] to finish the “Easy setup”.

You can preset up to 30 FM stations.

Presetting stations automatically:

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] to select “FM”.

2. Press [MENU]. The display shows “LOWEST”.

3. Press and hold [OK]. Release the button when “FM AUTO” is displayed. The tuner will preset all receivable stations in ascending order.

Presetting stations manually:

1. Tune to the radio station you want to preset.

2. Press [OK].

3. While the frequency is flashing, use the numbered buttons to select a channel number, then press [OK].

The START menu allows you to select sources, change settings, and access playback functions.

1. Press [START] to show the START menu.

2. Press the arrow keys to select an item (e.g., Input select, Setup) and press [OK].

3. Press the arrow keys to make the setting and press [OK]. To exit, press [START] again.

When a disc is loaded, you can also access playback options like “Playback Disc” from the START menu.

Select settings to suit the type of audio from the DIGITAL AUDIO IN OPTICAL and HDMI AV OUT terminals.

1. Press [EXT-IN, RADIO] several times to select “D-IN” or “ARC”.

2. Press [PLAY MODE] and then use the up/down arrow keys to select the mode you want to change (DUAL, DRC, PCM FIX, or STB).

3. While the mode is displayed, press the left/right arrow keys to select the desired setting.

Enjoying surround sound effects:

Press [SURROUND] repeatedly to cycle through different modes depending on your speaker layout (e.g., STANDARD, MULTI-CH, DOLBY PLII MOVIE, S.SRD).

Selecting sound mode:

1. Press [SOUND] to select a sound mode to adjust: EQ (Equalizer), SUBW LVL (Subwoofer Level), or C.FOCUS (Center Focus).

2. While the selected mode is displayed, press the left/right arrow keys to make adjustments (e.g., for EQ: FLAT, HEAVY, CLEAR, SOFT; for SUBW LVL: LEVEL 1 to 4).

Whisper-mode Surround:

This enhances the audio effect for low volume 5.1-channel sound. Press [W.SRD] to turn it ON or OFF.

Adjusting speaker level (only in “Surround layout” mode):

1. Press and hold [–CH SELECT] to select the speaker. Press the button repeatedly to cycle through L → C → R → RS → LS → SW.

2. While “C”, “RS”, “LS”, “SW”, or “S” is selected, press the up/down arrow keys to increase or decrease the level for that speaker (-6 dB to +6 dB).

Adjusting speaker balance:

1. Press and hold [–CH SELECT] to select “L” or “R”.

2. While “L” or “R” is selected, press the left/right arrow keys to adjust the speaker balance.

Ensure your TV is on and set to the correct video input.

1. Press the power button to turn on the unit.

2. Press [DVD] to select “DVD/CD”.

3. Press [▲ OPEN/CLOSE] to open the disc tray.

4. Load the disc with the label facing up.

5. Press [► PLAY] to start playback.

Basic controls include:

• Stop: Press [■ STOP]. Pressing once memorizes the position. Pressing again clears it.

• Pause: Press [II PAUSE]. Press [► PLAY] to resume.

• Skip: Press [SKIP I◄◄] or [SKIP ►►I].

• Search/Slow-motion: Press [SEARCH ◄◄] or [SEARCH ►►] during play to search, or during pause for slow-motion.

• Frame-by-frame: Press the left or right arrow keys during pause.

These modes are available for CD, MP3, and JPEG discs.

Program Play (up to 30 items):

1. While the disc is stopped, press [PLAY MODE] to select the Program menu.

2. Use the arrow keys to select an item you want to program and press [OK]. Repeat this step to add more items.

3. Press [► PLAY] to start the program playback.

To clear a selected program, highlight it and press [CANCEL]. To clear the whole program, select “Clear All”.

Random Play (RND):

1. While the disc is stopped, press [PLAY MODE] to select the RND menu.

2. For MP3/JPEG, use the arrow keys to select the desired group and press [OK].

3. Press [► PLAY] to start random playback of all tracks/files in the disc or selected group.

During playback, you can access various settings through on-screen menus.

1. Press [FUNCTIONS] to show the on-screen menu. Pressing it repeatedly cycles through Menu 1 (Disc), Menu 2 (Video), Menu 3 (Audio), and Exit.

2. Use the arrow keys to select an item and press [OK].

3. Use the arrow keys to change the setting and press [OK].

Available Options Include:

• Menu 1 (Disc): Title/Track Search, Audio soundtrack selection, Play Speed, Repeat Mode, Subtitle selection, Angle selection.

• Menu 2 (Video): Transfer Mode, Zoom.

• Menu 3 (Audio): Dialog Enhancer (to make dialog clearer).

VIERA Link provides linked operations between this unit and a compatible Panasonic TV (VIERA) connected via HDMI. Ensure the VIERA Link setting is “On” in the Setup menu for both devices.

• One Touch Play: When in standby, pressing [► PLAY] on the remote will turn on the unit and the TV, switch the TV to the correct input, and start disc playback.

• Auto Input Switching (Power on link): When you start play on the unit, the connected TV automatically turns on (if off) and switches to the correct HDMI input.

• Power Off Link: When you turn off the TV, all connected VIERA Link compatible equipment, including this unit, will automatically turn off.

• Speaker Selection: You can use the TV’s menu to select whether audio outputs from the TV speakers or the home theater speakers. When home theater is selected, the TV speakers are automatically muted.

Connecting the iPod/iPhone:

1. Open the Dock for iPod/iPhone by pushing the center of the drawer and then pulling it out until it clicks.

2. Attach the dock adapter (not supplied) that is compatible with your iPod/iPhone model.

3. Firmly connect your iPod/iPhone (not supplied) to the dock.

Playing Music/Videos:

1. Press [iPod] to select “IPOD” as the source. The unit’s display mode will switch automatically.

2. Press [FUNCTIONS] to select the music or video menu on the TV screen.

3. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select an item (playlist, artist, song, video) and press [OK] to play.

Basic controls like Play, Pause, Skip, and Search on the remote will work with the iPod/iPhone.

You can change various player settings through the Setup menu.

1. Press [DVD] to select “DVD/CD”.

2. Press [START] to show the START menu.

3. Use the arrow keys to select “Setup” and press [OK].

4. Use the arrow keys to select a menu (e.g., Language, Display, Audio, Video, HDMI, Others) and press [OK].

5. Use the up/down arrow keys to select the item you want to change and press [OK].

6. Use the left/right arrow keys to make the setting and press [OK].

To exit the screen, press [START].

The unit can play the following types of discs:

Commercial discs:

• DVD-Video
• Video CD (including SVCD)
• CD (Music discs)

Recorded discs (must be finalized):

• DVD-R/RW: DVD-Video Format, MP3 format, JPEG format
• DVD-R DL: DVD-Video Format
• +R/+RW/+R DL: +VR (Video Recording) Format
• CD-R/RW: CD-DA format, MP3 format, JPEG format

Discs that cannot be played include: Blu-ray Discs, HD DVD, AVCHD discs, DVD-Audio, DVD-ROM, DivX discs, and others not conforming to standards.

• Clean the unit with a soft, dry cloth.

• Never use alcohol, paint thinner, or benzine to clean this unit.

• Before using a chemically treated cloth, carefully read the instructions that came with the cloth.

• Before moving the unit, ensure the disc tray is empty to avoid severely damaging the disc and the unit.

You can attach the front, center, and surround speakers to a wall. The wall or pillar must be able to support 10 kg (22 lbs) per screw.

1. Drive a screw (not supplied) into the wall. Leave the screw head protruding 3 mm to 5 mm (1/8″ to 3/16″).

2. Fit the speaker securely onto the screw(s) with the hole(s) on the back of the speaker. Ensure the speaker is stable and will not fall if moved slightly.

For added safety, you can loop a string (not supplied) through the hole on the speaker and secure it to a screw eye (not supplied) in the wall.

• No power: Insert the AC power supply cord securely.

• The unit is automatically switched to standby mode: This is normal. The Sleep timer may have reached its set time limit, or the unit automatically switched to standby after 30 minutes of inactivity.

• Power turns off when TV input is changed: This is normal when using VIERA Link “HDAVI Control 4 or later”.

• “NO PLAY”: You inserted a disc the unit cannot play, a blank disc, or a disc that has not been finalized.

• “NO DISC”: You have not inserted a disc, or you inserted it incorrectly.

• “IPOD OVER CURRENT ERROR”: The connected iPod/iPhone is drawing too much power. Remove the device, then turn the unit off and on again.

• “F61”: Check and correct the speaker cable connections. If this does not fix the problem, consult the dealer.

• “F76”: There is a power supply problem. Consult the dealer.

• “DVD U11”: The disc may be dirty. Wipe it clean.

• “DVD H[number]” or “DVD F[number]”: Trouble may have occurred. Turn the unit off and then back on. Alternatively, turn the unit off, disconnect the AC power supply cord, and then reconnect it.

• “REMOTE 1” or “REMOTE 2”: The remote and main unit are in different modes. Press and hold [OK] and the corresponding number ([1] or [2]) on the remote for at least 2 seconds to match them.

• Check the video and speaker connections are secure.

• Check the power and input settings on the connected equipment (e.g., your TV) and the main unit.

• Check that the disc has content recorded on it.

• If using the HDMI connection for TV audio, ensure the TV is ARC compatible or that an additional audio cable (optical or analog) is connected.

• When using the HDMI connection, ensure that “Audio Out” in the HDMI menu is set to “On” if you want audio to pass through the HDMI cable.

The sound output depends on the source material and the selected surround mode.

• If you are using the “Surround layout (Recommended)” mode with a 2-channel source (like a CD or regular TV show), press [SURROUND] to select “MULTI-CH” or another surround mode like “DOLBY PLII” to create sound from all speakers.

• If you are using the “Front layout (Alternative)” mode, press [SURROUND] to select “A.SRD” (Advanced Surround).

• Change the “TV Aspect” setting in the Video menu to match your TV type (e.g., 16:9, 4:3 Pan&Scan, 4:3 Letterbox).

• Use your TV’s own aspect ratio controls to adjust the picture.

• Change the zoom setting (“Zoom” in Menu 2 during playback).
