What general advice should I follow before using the vacuum cleaner?
Proper assembly and safe use of your vacuum cleaner are your responsibilities. Your vacuum cleaner is intended only for household use. The vacuum cleaner should be stored in a dry, indoor area. Read the Operating Instructions carefully for important use and safety information. Special care is required when vacuuming certain types of carpet or floor covering. Always check the carpet or floor covering manufacturer’s recommended cleaning instructions before vacuuming.
How can I avoid electrical shock when using the vacuum cleaner?
Never vacuum damp or wet surfaces or liquids.
DO NOT store vacuum cleaner outdoors.
Replace worn or frayed power cord immediately.
Unplug from outlet when not in use and before servicing.
How can I avoid accidents while using the vacuum cleaner?
Except for hand-held vacuum cleaners, keep vacuum cleaner on floor – not chairs, tables, steps, stairs, etc.
Store vacuum cleaner promptly after each use to prevent accidents such as tripping over power cord or vacuum cleaner.
Use vacuum cleaner and accessories only in a manner intended by the manufacturer.
The use of an extension cord is not recommended.
What are the important safety instructions for using the vacuum cleaner?
To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, or injury:
1. Use your vacuum cleaner only as described in this manual. Use only with Panasonic recommended attachments.
2. Disconnect electrical supply before servicing or cleaning out the agitator area. Failure to do so could result in the agitator unexpectedly starting, causing personal injury from moving parts.
3. Do not leave vacuum cleaner when plugged in. Unplug from outlet when not in use and before servicing.
4. To reduce the risk of electrical shock – Do not use outdoors or on wet surfaces.
5. Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when used by or near children.
6. Do not use with a damaged cord or plug. If vacuum cleaner is not working as it should, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped in water, return it to a Panasonic Service Center.
7. Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as a handle, close a door on cord, or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Do not run vacuum cleaner over cord. Keep cord away from heated surfaces.
8. Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.
9. Do not handle plug or vacuum cleaner with wet hands.
10. Do not put any objects into openings.
11. Do not use with any opening blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair, and anything that may reduce air flow.
12. Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all parts of body away from openings and moving parts.
13. Turn off all controls before unplugging.
14. Use extra care when cleaning on stairs. Do not put on chairs, tables, etc. Keep on floor.
15. Do not use vacuum cleaner to pick up flammable or combustible liquids (gasoline, cleaning fluid, perfumes, etc.), or use in areas where they may be present. The fumes from these substances can create a fire hazard or explosion.
16. Do not pick up anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches, or hot ashes.
17. Do not use vacuum cleaner without dust bag and/or filters in place.
18. You are responsible for making sure that your vacuum cleaner is not used by anyone unable to operate it properly.

How do I assemble the handle for the MC-UG728 model?
For the Hose Holder and Cord Hook:
1. Remove the screw from the cord hook.
2. Slide the hose holder to the position shown in the illustration.
3. Re-install the screw through the washer, spring and cord hook and through the hose holder. Use the top screw hole.
4. Tighten screw. Do not overtighten.
For the Carrying Handle:
1. Remove the screw from handle.
2. Slide the carrying handle to the position shown in the illustration.
3. Re-install the screw through the carrying handle into the hole in the handle.
4. Tighten screw. Do not overtighten.
How do I assemble the handle for the MC-UG729 model?
1. Remove two (2) screws from handle.
2. Remove carry handle.
3. Slide the clip to the position shown in the illustration.
4. Re-install the screw through the clip into the hole in the handle.
5. Tighten screw. Do not overtighten.
6. Slide the carry handle to the position shown in the illustration.
7. Re-install the screw through the carry handle into the hole in the handle.
8. Tighten screw. Do not overtighten.
9. See the complete handle assembly shown in the illustration.
How do I attach the handle to the vacuum cleaner?
1. DO NOT plug in until assembly is complete.
2. Remove handle screw.
3. Insert handle with cord hook to the back of the vacuum cleaner.
4. Insert screw.
5. Tighten screw.
How do I store the tools on the vacuum cleaner?
1. Place wand (MC-UG728) or telescopic wand (MC-UG729) in center slot of tool holder, twisting and pushing down over short hose to assure a good connection.
2. Place crevice tool into rectangular rear slot of tool holder.
3. Place wand into front slot of tool holder.
4. Refer to PARTS IDENTIFICATION section for tool location.
How do I store the hose and attach the wand?
1. Place hose in front of handle on hose holder.
2. Attach wand to hose by aligning the two (2) raised tabs on wand with “J” slots in hose, guide tabs along grooves, twist to lock in place.
How do I set up the tool caddy for the MC-UG729 model?
MC-UG729 ONLY:
1. Insert caddy into holder on handle.
2. Press caddy onto handle and snap in place.
3. Insert air turbine into caddy and snap into clip.
How do I manage the power cord?
1. Push power cord into locking notch.
2. Wrap power cord around cord hook and carrying handle.
3. Secure retainer (plug head) to power cord.
What precautions should I take when operating the vacuum cleaner, especially regarding the agitator?
CAUTION: Moving parts! To reduce the risk of personal injury, DO NOT touch the agitator when vacuum cleaner is on. Any contact with the agitator while it is rotating can cut, bruise or cause other injuries. Always turn off and unplug from electrical outlet before servicing.
Use caution when operating near children.
What should I know about the polarized plug and connecting the power cord?
Note: To reduce the risk of electrical shock, this vacuum cleaner has a polarized plug, one blade is wider than the other. This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. DO NOT CHANGE THE PLUG IN ANY WAY. Only use outlets near the floor.
1. Detach plug head from power cord.
2. Rotate cord hook down to release cord.
3. Plug cord into 120-volt outlet located near the floor.
4. Return the cord hook to the upright position before attempting to rewind the cord.
How do I use the ON-OFF switch?
1. Ensure ON-OFF switch is OFF.
2. Plug the power cord into 120V outlet.
3. Turn vacuum cleaner on.
4. Always turn off before unplugging.
How do I use the body release feature?
Your vacuum cleaner is equipped with three (3) position body release:
• Upright position (locked)
• Middle position (normal use)
• Low position (under furniture)
To operate:
1. Release the body by pressing down on the body release pedal with your foot and pulling back and down on the handle with your hand.
2. Move the vacuum cleaner to upright position for storage and tool use.
How do I use the Carpet/Bare Floor selector?
• Selector should be placed in BARE FLOOR (TOOLS) position when using vacuum cleaner on bare floors and when using tools. The agitator does not rotate in the BARE FLOOR (TOOLS) position.
• Selector should be placed in CARPET position when using vacuum cleaner on carpeted floors.
CAUTION: Incorrect setting may cause floor or carpet damage.
What settings and precautions are important when using tools?
CAUTION: Selector should be placed in BARE FLOOR (TOOLS) position when using vacuum cleaner on bare floors and when using tools. Incorrect setting may cause floor or carpet damage.
CAUTION:
• When using attachments, place one hand on the vacuum cleaner to prevent tipping the vacuum cleaner over.
• DO NOT overextend your reach with hose as it could tip vacuum cleaner.
How do I attach and store tools when using them?
1. Remove wand from short hose by twisting and pulling up.
2. The tools can be attached to hose, telescopic wand, wand or crevice tool.
3. Place all tools and hose back in the same manner as shown in TOOL STORAGE instructions.

The bonus wand can be added to the wand for additional reach.
How do I adjust the telescopic wand on the MC-UG729 model?
MC-UG729 ONLY:
The telescopic wand length is adjustable and requires no assembly. To adjust, simply press the wand button and slide the wand to the desired setting.
Release button and continue to slide wand until it locks into position.
What items can the Air Turbine (MC-UG729 only) be used on?
The Air Turbine may be used on the following items:
• Furniture
• Stairs
Operating instructions for the Air Turbine are included with the product.
What items can the Floor Brush (MC-UG729 only) be used on?
The Floor Brush may be used on the following items:
• Stairs
• Bare Floors

Note: Always clean tools before using.
What is the Overload Protection feature and how do I use it?
The OVERLOAD PROTECTION RESET button stops the nozzle motor when the brush jams to prevent belt breakage.
NOTE: The vacuum cleaner motor will continue to run.
TO CORRECT PROBLEM:
1. Unplug electrical cord.
2. Check nozzle areas for excessive lint buildup or jamming.
3. Clean jammed area.
TO RESET:
1. Press reset button on top of the nozzle.
2. Plug in and turn on vacuum cleaner.
What is the Edge Cleaning feature?
Edge cleaning feature enables improved cleaning of carpets near walls and furniture.
What happens if a clog prevents normal air flow to the motor?
If a clog prevents the normal flow of air to the motor, the thermal protector turns the motor off automatically to allow the motor to cool in order to prevent possible damage to the vacuum cleaner.
How do I correct a problem when the thermal protector has turned the motor off?
To correct problem, turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner, remove clogs, and/or clean/replace filters.
Replace full bag if necessary.
Wait approximately thirty (30) minutes, plug vacuum cleaner in, and turn on to see if thermal protector has reset. Thermal protector will not reset if vacuum cleaner is not turned off even if vacuum cleaner cools down.
How does the nozzle of the Panasonic vacuum cleaner adjust to different carpet pile heights?
The nozzle of your Panasonic vacuum cleaner automatically adjusts to any carpet pile height.
What is a feature of the automatic adjusting nozzle?
Feature allows nozzle to float evenly over carpet pile surfaces.
Are manual adjustments required for the nozzle?
No manual adjustments required.
What type of dust bags should be used with the Panasonic vacuum cleaner?
Always operate vacuum cleaner with genuine Panasonic Type U12 Electrostatic or U10 HEPA dust bags installed. Panasonic dust bags may be purchased through any authorized Panasonic dealer or ordered from service company.
How do I replace the dust bag?
Grasp top of dust cover and squeeze latch to release.
Pull outward to remove dust cover.
Remove dust bag by grasping cardboard portion and pulling out.
Spread out new dust bag, taking care not to tear bag.
Attach new dust bag onto bag holder by holding cardboard portion and pushing back.
Reinsert tabs on end of dust cover into grooves on dust compartment.
Press dust cover into place without pinching dust bag.
What is the purpose of the secondary filter?
Secondary filter protects the motor.
How often should the secondary filter be cleaned?
It is recommended to clean filter with cold water at least every three (3) months. Check the secondary filter frequently and clean when dirty.
Check filter when installing a new dust bag.
How do I clean the secondary filter?
Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner.
If dirty, pull filter from bottom of dust compartment and clean.
Wash with cold water only, DO NOT use detergent or soap.
Once the filter is washed clean, squeeze by hand and allow to air-dry.
Allow filter to dry for 24 hours before placing back into vacuum cleaner.
Ensure filter is fully inserted under plastic rib projections.
When should the secondary filter be replaced?
NOTE: When the cleaning of the filter no longer restores vacuum cleaner suction to full power, replace the filter.
What precautions should be taken when handling the secondary filter?
DO NOT operate without secondary filter installed.
DO NOT wash in the dishwasher.
DO NOT install the filter when damp.
When should I check the HEPA Media Filter?
Check filter when installing a new dust bag.
How do I replace the HEPA Media Filter?
Remove dust cover (follow instructions for removing the dust cover).
Press tab on dust cover to release front cover.
If dirty, replace filter.
Place new filter into the dust cover. Ensure filter is fully inserted.
Reinstall front cover.
Reinstall dust cover (follow instructions for reinstalling the dust cover).
Note: Ensure filter is fully inserted. Filters cannot be cleaned and should be replaced at least once each year.
Can the HEPA Media Filter be cleaned with water?
DO NOT CLEAN WITH WATER. Filters cannot be cleaned and should be replaced at least once each year.
What should I be aware of regarding the front cover during prolonged use?
CAUTION: Front cover will get warm during prolonged use due to exhaust design. This is normal and does not effect the performance of the vacuum cleaner.
What is the first step before servicing any parts or cleaning the vacuum cleaner?
WARNING: Electrical Shock or Personal Injury Hazard. Disconnect the electrical supply before servicing or cleaning the vacuum cleaner. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or personal injury from vacuum cleaner suddenly starting.
Before servicing any parts, disconnect vacuum cleaner from electrical outlet.
How do I remove and install the lower plate?
Always place paper under nozzle whenever lower plate is removed to protect floor.
Place body in upright position and turn vacuum cleaner over to expose lower plate.
Release lower plate by rotating the lower plate latches to the UNLOCK position.
Remove lower plate and remove any residue that may exist in belt area.
Reinstall lower plate by hooking front end of lower plate into slots on front of nozzle.
Press lower plate onto nozzle and secure by rotating the lower plate latches to the LOCK position.
When should the belt be replaced?
Replace belt whenever a burning rubber smell caused by excessive slippage occurs.
How do I replace the belt?
Remove lower plate. (See “Removing and Installing Lower Plate” instructions).
Remove agitator by carefully lifting out.
Remove worn or broken belt.
Clean agitator and the end caps (refer to the agitator cleaning instructions).
Loop new belt around motor shaft and agitator belt groove; see illustration for correct belt routing.
Reinstall agitator back into nozzle housing grooves.
After reinstalling the agitator, turn it by hand to make sure that belt is not twisted or pinched and that all rotating parts turn freely.
Reinstall lower plate. Ensure tabs are locked into slots.
How often should the agitator be cleaned?
Clean agitator after every five uses and every time the belt is replaced.
How do I clean the agitator?
Remove lower plate. (See: “Removing and Installing Lower Plate” instructions).
Cut off any hair, thread, string, carpet pile, and lint entangled around agitator with a pair of scissors.
Remove agitator. (See: “Replacing Belt” instructions for removing agitator).
Remove any string or debris located on the end caps, washers or agitator shaft.
Reinstall agitator and lower plate. (See: “Removing and Installing Lower Plate” and agitator reinstallation instructions).
When should the agitator be replaced?
When the bristles on the agitator are worn so that they do not touch a card held across the lower plate, the agitator should be replaced.
How do I replace the agitator?
Remove lower plate and agitator.
Clean debris from end caps.
Position belt over belt pulley on the new agitator. (See: “Replacing Belt” instructions for belt positioning).
Reinstall agitator (See: “Replacing Belt,” instructions for agitator reinstallation) and lower plate (See: “Removing and Installing Lower Plate” instructions for lower plate reinstallation).
How do I clean the exterior of the vacuum cleaner?
Clean exterior using a clean, soft cloth that has been dipped in a solution of mild liquid detergent and water and wrung dry.
DO NOT drip water on vacuum cleaner.
Wipe dry after cleaning.
How do I clean the vacuum cleaner tools?
DO NOT clean tools in dishwasher or clothes washer.
Wash tools in warm soapy water, rinse and air-dry.
DO NOT use tools if they are wet.
What should I do if the hose on the back of the vacuum cleaner becomes clogged?
The hose located on the back of the vacuum cleaner carries the dirt from the nozzle up to the dust bag. If the hose should become clogged:
Unplug vacuum cleaner.
Pull open suction inlet cover and check for clogging.
Disconnect telescopic wand from short hose and check telescopic wand and hose.
Plug in vacuum cleaner and turn on. (This is to check if the clog is cleared or to use suction to help clear it).
If the clog persists: Disconnect telescopic wand and stretch hose in and out to remove clog.
Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner.
Remove lower plate. (See: “Removing and Installing Lower Plate” instructions).
Inspect inlet of nozzle hose and clear any obstructions.
Reinstall lower plate (refer to lower plate installation instructions).
Return the vacuum cleaner to the upright position before plugging into an electrical outlet.
What should I do if the vacuum cleaner will not run?
Possible Causes:
1. Unplugged at wall outlet.
2. ON-OFF switch not turned on.
3. Thermal protector tripped.
4. Tripped circuit breaker/blown fuse at household service panel.
5. Defective wall outlet.
Possible Solutions:
1. Plug in firmly. Push ON-OFF switch to ON.
2. Push ON-OFF switch to ON.
3. Allow to cool 30-50 minutes and thermal protector will reset itself.
4. Reset circuit breaker or replace fuse.
5. Check with a good appliance or lamp. Have outlet properly serviced.
What should I do if the vacuum cleaner has a poor job of dirt pickup?
Possible Causes:
1. Dust cover improperly installed.
2. Clogged hose or nozzle.
3. Hose not inserted fully.
4. Full or clogged dust bag.
5. Dirty filters.
6. Broken belt.
7. Belt not installed on motor shaft.
8. Worn agitator.
9. Hole in hose.
Possible Solutions:
1. Properly install dust cover.
2. Clean hose or nozzle area.
3. Insert hose.
4. Replace dust bag.
5. Clean or replace secondary filter and/or replace exhaust filter.
6. Replace belt.
7. Install belt on motor shaft.
8. Replace agitator.
9. Replace hose.
What should I do if dust escapes the dust bag?
Possible Causes:
1. Bag improperly installed.
2. Bag torn.

1. Properly install bag.
2. Replace bag.
What should I do if the agitator does not turn?
Possible Causes:
1. Carpet/Bare floor selector in BARE FLOOR position.
2. Broken belt.
3. Tripped overload protector in nozzle.
4. Handle in full upright position.
Possible Solutions:
1. Select CARPET position.
2. Replace belt.
3. Remove any items that may be caught or jammed, then reset. If vacuum cleaner starts and stops again, clean agitator and end caps, then reset.
4. Move handle from upright position.
What should I do if airflow is restricted with attachment use or there are sound changes?
Possible Causes:
1. Tool use restricts air flow.
2. New carpet fuzz clogged air path.

1. Check tools for fuzz, lint, pet hair or other debris.
