Before operating the unit, please read the operating instructions together with the Safety Instructions (separate booklet) thoroughly and keep them for future reference. Use the unit as directed in accordance with the enclosed instruction manual and observe all safety warnings and responsibilities presented.

The following accessories are included with your air conditioner:

• Remote control

• AAA or R03 batteries x 2

• Remote control holder

• Screws for remote control holder x 2

1. Pull out the back cover of the remote control.

2. Insert AAA or R03 batteries.

3. Close the cover.

1. Press the CLOCK button.

2. Press the arrow buttons to set the time.

3. Press SET to confirm.

• To switch between 12-hour (am/pm) and 24-hour time formats, press and hold the CLOCK button for approximately 5 seconds.

Follow these steps for basic operation:

1. Press the OFF/ON button to start or stop the operation. When the unit is ON, “OFF” disappears from the remote control display.

2. Press the MODE button to select the desired mode (AUTO, HEAT, FAN, DRY, COOL).

3. Press TEMP UP or TEMP DOWN to select the desired temperature. The selection range is 60 °F to 86 °F (16.0 °C to 30.0 °C).

• To switch the temperature display between °F and °C, press and hold the down arrow in the SELECT area for approximately 10 seconds.

You can adjust the airflow direction using the remote control:

• **Upper/Lower direction:** Press the AIR SWING button with the up/down arrows to adjust the vertical airflow. The flap will swing up and down.

• **Lateral direction:** Press the AIR SWING button with the left/right arrows to adjust the horizontal airflow. The louvers will swing left and right.

Note: Do not adjust the flap by hand.

Press the FAN SPEED/QUIET button to cycle through the options.

FAN SPEED:

• When FAN AUTO is selected, the fan speed is adjusted automatically according to the operation mode.

• You can manually select different fan speeds. Select the lowest fan speed for low noise operation.

QUIET:

• This operation reduces airflow noise.

• For Multi Split systems, Quiet mode only activates when the Quiet mode button is pressed for all indoor units that are switched ON.

To reach the desired temperature quickly, press the POWERFUL button. This operation will continue until it is cancelled. To cancel, press the POWERFUL button again or turn the unit OFF.

Press the ECO button to reduce power consumption for better energy saving without sacrificing comfort. To cancel, press the ECO button again. This operation cannot be used in FAN mode.

You can set the timer to turn the unit on and off at 2 different preset times.

1. Select TIMER ON or TIMER OFF by pressing the respective buttons.

2. Set the time using the arrow buttons in the SELECT area.

3. Confirm the setting by pressing SET.

• To cancel a timer, press TIMER ON or TIMER OFF to select the respective setting (1 or 2), then press CANCEL.

• If a timer was cancelled manually or due to a power failure, you can restore it by selecting the respective setting (1 or 2) and pressing SET.

• The nearest timer setting is displayed and will activate in sequence. The timer operation follows the clock setting and will repeat daily once set.

The PANASONIC CU-5Z36BBUC has the following operation modes:

• AUTO: The POWER indicator blinks at the initial stage. The unit selects an operation mode based on the setting and room temperature. For multi-split systems, the mode is selected every 3 hours.

• HEAT: The POWER indicator blinks at the initial stage. The unit will take some time to warm up.

• COOL: Provides efficient comfort cooling to suit your needs.

• DRY: Operates at a low fan speed for gentle cooling operation. When FAN AUTO is selected, DRY mode will operate with humidity control.

• FAN: To circulate air in the room.

Multi Split System Note: It is possible to operate the indoor units individually or simultaneously, with priority given to the first unit turned on. HEAT and COOL/DRY/FAN modes cannot activate at the same time for different indoor units. The differing indoor unit will stop and its POWER indicator will blink in standby condition.

You may save energy when operating the unit within the recommended temperature range:

• HEAT: 68 °F ~ 75 °F / 20.0 °C ~ 24.0 °C.

• COOL: 79 °F ~ 82 °F / 26.0 °C ~ 28.0 °C.

With Automatic Vertical Airflow selected:

• In COOL/DRY mode: The horizontal flap swings up/down automatically. Once the temperature is achieved, the horizontal flap is fixed at the upper position.

• In HEAT mode: The horizontal flap is fixed at the predetermined position. The vertical flap swings left/right when the temperature rises.

With Manual Airflow selected:

• In COOL/DRY mode: The horizontal flap swings up/down automatically.

• In HEAT mode: The horizontal flap is fixed to the upper position when discharge air temperature is cold. The horizontal flap swings up-down automatically when discharge air temperature is warm.

Room Freeze Protection (RFP) is used in unoccupied spaces during the winter to protect equipment or appliances from being damaged by freezing temperatures.

When RFP is selected, the unit operates in Heat mode with high fan speed for proper room temperature monitoring. If the sensor detects the room temperature dropping below the set temperature, the compressor starts. When the temperature rises above the set temperature, the compressor stops. This cycle repeats continuously.

When connected to a Multi Split outdoor unit, the unit will run a heating operation with a target room temperature set at 60°F.

Disclaimer: This function may not perform if the unit is not energized or is in a protection mode. In case of a power failure, this mode will not function. During RFP mode, POWERFUL, QUIET, and FAN SPEED selections are all disabled. Consult with your HVAC installer for more details.

Use the PANASONIC CU-5Z36BBUC air conditioner in the temperature range indicated in the table below. DBT is Dry bulb temperature, and WBT is Wet bulb temperature.

The power supply requirements, including the necessary time delay circuit breaker, are listed below.

Cleaning should be done at regular intervals for optimal performance. A dirty unit may cause a malfunction and display a “H 99” error code.

General Precautions:

• Switch off the power at the circuit breaker before cleaning.

• Do not touch the aluminum fin; sharp parts may cause injury.

• Do not use benzine, thinner, or scouring powder.

• Use only soap (pH 7) or neutral household detergent.

• Do not use water hotter than 104 °F / 40 °C.

Indoor Unit:

• Wipe the unit gently with a soft damp cloth. Avoid scratches from sharp or rough items. The coils and fans should be cleaned periodically by an authorized dealer.

Front Panel:

• To remove: Raise the panel up, then slide it to the right (A) and pull it out (B).

• Wash gently and dry.

• To reattach: Hold the panel horizontally, match and push it in, close it down, then press both ends and the center to secure it.

Air Filters (Once every 2 weeks):

• Remove the air filters from the unit.

• Wash/rinse the filters gently with water to avoid damaging the surface.

• Dry the filters thoroughly in a shaded area, away from fire or direct sunlight.

• Replace any damaged filters.

• Insert the filters back into the unit.

Outdoor Unit:

• Clean any debris surrounding the unit.

• Clear any blockage from the drain pipe.

If the unit does not work, check the following:

• Check if the circuit breaker is tripped.

• Check if timers have been set.

If the remote control is not working or its display is dim:

• Insert the batteries correctly.

• Replace weak batteries.

If the indoor unit does not receive the signal from the remote control:

• Make sure the receiver on the indoor unit is not obstructed.

• Certain fluorescent lights may interfere with the signal transmitter. Consult an authorized dealer if this is the case.

You can operate the unit from the indoor unit itself:

1. Raise the front panel.

2. Press the AUTO OFF/ON button once to use in AUTO mode.

3. Press and hold the button until you hear 1 beep, then release to use in forced COOL mode.

4. To turn off, press the button again.

To dim or restore the brightness of the indicators on the indoor unit, press and hold the down arrow button on the remote for 5 seconds.

For a seasonal inspection after an extended period of non-use:

• Check the batteries in the remote control.

• Check that there is no obstruction around the air inlets and outlet vents.

• Use the AUTO OFF/ON button on the unit to select COOL or HEAT mode. After 15 minutes of operation, it is normal to have the following temperature difference between the air inlet and outlet vents:

– COOL: ≥ 14.4 °F / 8 °C

– HEAT: ≥ 25.2 °F / 14 °C

If the unit will not be used for an extended period:

• Activate HEAT mode for 2-3 hours to thoroughly remove any moisture left in the internal parts. This helps to prevent mold growth.

• Turn off the power supply and unplug the unit.

• Remove the batteries from the remote control.

SWITCH OFF POWER AT THE CIRCUIT BREAKER and consult an authorized dealer in the following conditions:

• Abnormal noise during operation.

• Water/foreign particles have entered the remote control.

• Water leaks from the Indoor unit.

• The circuit breaker switches off frequently.

• The power cord becomes unnaturally warm.

• Switches or buttons are not functioning properly.

If the unit stops and the TIMER indicator blinks, use the remote control to retrieve the error code:

1. Press and hold the CHECK button for 5 seconds.

2. Press the up or down arrow buttons until you hear a beep sound, then write down the error code displayed.

3. Press and hold the CHECK button for 5 seconds to quit checking.

4. Turn the unit off and inform an authorized dealer of the error code.

For certain errors, you may restart the unit for limited operation if there are 4 beeps when operation starts.

* Some error codes may not be applicable to your model. Consult an authorized dealer for clarification.

The PANASONIC CU-5Z36BBUC has been designed and manufactured to meet ENERGY STAR® criteria for energy efficiency when matched with appropriate coil components. However, proper refrigerant charge and proper air flow are critical to achieve rated capacity and efficiency. Installation of this product should follow the manufacturer’s refrigerant charging and airflow instructions. Failure to confirm proper charge and airflow may reduce energy efficiency and shorten equipment life.
