What do the signal words on the product mean?

Potentially hazardous situation. Failure to follow this instruction could result in minor or moderate injury, or in some cases, could result in serious injury or death. Additionally there may be significant property damage.

What does the alert symbol mean?

Laser Beam: Cautions to indicate potential danger of a laser beam.

What is the primary safety alert for this laser product?

WARNING

Do not expose your eyes to the laser beam, either directly or reflected off a specular surface. The laser beam emitted from the laser has a high power density and may cause loss of eyesight if it enters the eye.

What safety precautions are required for using laser equipment?

Safety measures for laser devices are stipulated both in Japan and in other countries. The ZG2-WDS22 is classified into class 2 according to the JIS standard.

(1) Usage in Japan
The JIS C6802:2014 standard stipulates the safety precautions which the user must perform according to the class of the laser product. The ZG2-WDS22 is classified into class 2 according to this standard. A warning label is affixed to the side of the ZG2-WDS22 sensor unit.

(2) USA
When a laser device is exported to the USA, it falls under the laser regulations of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The ZG2-WDS22 is classified into class 3B according to 21CFR1040. It has already been registered with the CDRH (Center for Devices and Radiological Health). When exporting to the USA, refer to the following illustration and replace the labels on the sensor body. The ZG2-WDS22 is intended for incorporation into the final system. When incorporating the ZG2-WDS22, comply with the following technical standards: US Federal law: 21CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11.

(3) China
The ZG2-WDS22 is classified into Class 2 by the GB/T 7247.1-2024 standard. When used in China, the existing label must be replaced by Chinese ones supplied with the product.

(4) For countries other than Japan, U.S. and China
For regions outside Japan, the U.S. and China, replace the warning labels with the English ones supplied with the product. When exporting to Europe, labels must comply with EN60825-1:2014+A11:2021. The ZG2-WDS22 is classified as Class 2 by IEC 60825-1:2014 / EN 60825-1:2014+A11:2021 standard.

What are the precautions for safe use?

Please observe the following precautions for safe use of the product:

(1) Never use the product in an area where it can be exposed to inflammable/explosive gas.

(2) In order to secure the safety of operation and maintenance, do not install the product close to high-voltage devices and power devices.

(3) Make sure to use the product with the power voltage specified.

(4) Be sure to tighten the screws for mounting securely.

(5) Do not disassemble, repair, or modify the product.

(6) Dispose of this product as industrial waste.

What are the precautions for correct use?

Please observe the following precautions to prevent failure to operate, malfunction, or undesirable effects on product performance.

(1) Installation environment
Do not install the product in locations subjected to the following conditions:

• Direct sunlight or near heaters

• Locations where water, oil or other liquids or chemicals may splash on the product

• Sudden changes in temperature

• Ambient temperature outside the freezing

• Relative humidity outside the range

• Direct vibration or shock

• Presence of corrosive or inflammable gas

• Presence of dust, salt or iron particles

• Strong magnetic or electric field

• Exposure to strong ambient light (i.e. other laser beams or light from electric arc welders) or generation of strong electromagnetic waves

(2) Installation and cleaning of the sensor

Use only the products that have been made expressly for this application.

Install the sensor in a clean environment and keep the optical filter on the front of the sensor head free of dust or oil.

If affected by oil or dust, clean the filter as follows. Use a blower brush (for camera lens) to blow large dust particles away. Do not use your breath to blow the dust. Use a soft cloth (such as a lens cleaning cloth) dampened with a small amount of alcohol to wipe small dust particles away. Do not wipe forcefully. This may scratch the filter and cause an error.

(3) Power supply
After turning on the power, allow the Controller to warm up for approximately 30 minutes before use. It will be unstable immediately after the power supply is turned on and the measured value will drift. Therefore, wait 30 minutes before using it.

(4) Environment
Please do not detect the following types of objects:

• Objects with an extremely low reflectivity, small curved objects with small curvatures, or objects tilted to a large degree

(5) Warm-up
After turning on the power supply, allow the Controller to warm up for approximately 30 minutes before use. It will be unstable immediately after the power supply is turned on and the measured value will drift.

(6) Influence of external light

• Do not install the product under the condition when it happens.

• When a target is glossy, the target might reflect strong ambient light and cause malfunction. Cover the sensor head which might cause malfunction.

• Avoid installing the product where strong light falls into the sensor head.

How do I connect the sensor with the ferrite cores?

Two ferrite cores (supplied with the controller) must be installed on the sensor cable. One must be located within 100 mm from the sensor and one must be located within 100 mm from the connector.

*1 Defined as 1/e² (13.5%) of the central light intensity. There are some cases where it influences when the reflection factor of the area surrounding the workpiece is higher than that of the workpiece.

*2 Measured with our standard white alumina ceramic placed at the center of measurement distance, and with the average height of the entire line measured. The average of the measurements is taken. Note that the resolution performance may not be satisfied in the presence of a strong electromagnetic field, with 64 times averaging.

*3 The error in relation to the ideal straight line when the average height of all lines on an OMRON-standard workpiece (alumina ceramic) is measured. The linearity may differ depending on the workpiece. (See Drawing 1) The CCD mode is the high-accuracy mode.

*4 For lighting operation, refer to Table 1.

*5 The value obtained at measurement with the space between the sensor and the workpiece fixed with an aluminum jig. The CCD mode is Standard mode.
