What is the proper use of the METABO WP 850-125 angle grinder?
The METABO WP 850-125 angle grinder, when fitted with original Metabo accessories, is suitable for grinding, sanding, separating, and wire brushing metal, concrete, stone, and similar materials without the use of water. The user bears sole responsibility for any damage caused by inappropriate use. Polishing work is not a proper use for this power tool.
What are the general safety warnings for operating the METABO WP 850-125?
Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and specifications provided with the METABO WP 850-125 power tool to reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.
General Safety Warnings:
• Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
• Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce the risk of electric shock. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
• Personal Safety: Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence. Wear personal protective equipment, including eye protection, dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection as appropriate.
• Power Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Maintain power tools and check for misalignment, binding of moving parts, breakage, and any other condition that may affect the operation.
What are the specific safety instructions for grinding, sanding, wire brushing, or cutting-off with the METABO WP 850-125?
Accessory Safety:
• Use only accessories specifically designed and specified by the tool manufacturer.
• The rated speed of the accessory must be at least equal to the maximum speed marked on the power tool.
• The outside diameter and thickness of your accessory must be within the capacity rating of your power tool.
• The dimensions of the accessory mounting must fit the dimensions of the mounting hardware of the power tool.
• Do not use a damaged accessory. Before each use inspect accessories such as abrasive wheels for chips and cracks, backing pads for tears or excess wear, and wire brushes for loose or cracked wires.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on the application, use a face shield, safety goggles, or safety glasses. As appropriate, wear a dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves, and a workshop apron.
Operational Safety:
• Keep bystanders a safe distance away from the work area.
• Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord.
• Position the cord clear of the spinning accessory.
• Never lay the power tool down until the accessory has come to a complete stop.
• Regularly clean the power tool’s air vents to prevent electrical hazards from excessive accumulation of powdered metal.
• Do not operate the power tool near flammable materials.
• Do not use accessories that require liquid coolants.
What is kickback and how can I prevent it when using the METABO WP 850-125?
Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged rotating wheel, backing pad, brush, or any other accessory. Pinching or snagging causes rapid stalling of the rotating accessory, which in turn causes the uncontrolled power tool to be forced in the direction opposite of the accessory’s rotation at the point of the binding.
To prevent kickback:
• Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the power tool and position your body and arms to allow you to resist kickback forces. Always use the auxiliary handle for maximum control.
• Never place your hand near the rotating accessory.
• Do not position your body in the area where the power tool will move if kickback occurs. Kickback will propel the tool in the direction opposite to the wheel’s movement at the point of snagging.
• Use special care when working corners, sharp edges, etc. Avoid bouncing and snagging the accessory.
• Do not attach a saw chain woodcarving blade, a segmented diamond wheel with a peripheral gap greater than 10 mm, or a toothed saw blade. Such blades create frequent kickback and loss of control.
How do I attach the additional handle and safety guard to the METABO WP 850-125?
Attaching the Additional Handle:
Always work with the additional handle (10) attached. Attach the additional handle on the left or right of the machine and secure it.
Attaching the Safety Guard (for models W 750 up to W 1100-125):
1. Loosen the clamping screw (16) until the clamping ring (17) on the safety guard expands sufficiently.
2. Place the safety guard (11) in the position indicated in the manual’s illustrations.
3. Turn the safety guard until the closed section is facing the operator.
4. Tighten the clamping screw (16) firmly. Ensure the guard is seated securely and cannot be turned.
Attaching the Safety Guard (for models WP 1100-115, WQ 1100-125, WEQ 1400-125):
1. Push and hold the lever (18).
2. Place the safety guard (11) in the indicated position.
3. Release the lever and rotate the guard until the lever latches.
4. Push the lever and turn the safety guard until the closed section is facing the operator.
5. Ensure the guard is attached securely: The lever must be engaged and you should not be able to turn the safety guard.
Note: For safety reasons, only use the guard provided for the respective accessory. Use only accessories that are covered by at least 3.4 mm by the safety guard.
How do I attach a grinding wheel to the METABO WP 850-125?
Prior to any conversion work, pull the mains plug out of the socket. The machine must be switched off and the spindle at a standstill.
1. Locking the Spindle:
Press in the spindle locking button (4) and turn the spindle (3) by hand until the spindle locking button engages.
2. Placing the Grinding Wheel:
1. Fit the support flange (2) on the spindle. The flange should not turn on the spindle when properly attached.
2. Place the grinding wheel on the support flange (2). The grinding wheel must lay flat on the supporting flange.
3. Securing the Wheel:
After placing the wheel, you must secure it with either the “M-Quick” clamping nut, the 2-hole nut, or the tool-free clamping nut, depending on your model’s features.
How do I secure and release the different types of nuts on the METABO WP 850-125?
Securing/Releasing the “M-Quick” Clamping Nut:
• Securing: Lock the spindle. Position the “M-Quick” nut (1) on the spindle (3) so the two lugs engage in the grooves. Tighten the nut by hand clockwise, then turn the grinding wheel firmly clockwise to fully tighten it.
• Releasing: The “M-Quick” nut must be attached before the spindle locking button can hold the spindle. As the machine is switching off, press the spindle locking button (4) just before the grinding wheel stops. The nut will be released.
Securing/Releasing the 2-Hole Nut:
• Securing: The 2 sides of the two-hole nut are different. For thin grinding discs, the edge of the nut (12) faces upwards. For thick grinding discs, the edge of the nut faces downwards. Lock the spindle and turn the nut clockwise using the two-hole spanner (13) to secure it.
• Releasing: Lock the spindle. Turn the two-hole nut (12) anticlockwise using the two-hole spanner (13) to unscrew.
Securing/Releasing the (tool-free) Clamping Nut:
• Securing: Tighten the nut (14) by hand only. The clip (15) must always lie flat on the nut for the machine to operate. Lock the spindle, flip up the clip (15), fit the clamping nut (14), tighten it manually clockwise, and then flip the clip (15) down again.
• Releasing: Lock the spindle, flip up the clip (15) on the clamping nut, and unscrew the nut (14) by turning it anticlockwise manually.
How do I switch the METABO WP 850-125 on and off?
Always guide the METABO WP 850-125 with both hands. Switch it on first, then guide the accessory towards the workpiece.
For machines with a slide switch:
• Switching on: Push the slide switch (5) forwards. For continuous operation, tilt it downwards until it engages.
• Switching off: Press the rear end of the slide switch (5) and release it.
For machines with a paddle switch (with deadman function), like the METABO WP 850-125:
• Switching on: Slide the switch-on lock (9) in the direction of the arrow and press the trigger (8).
• Switching off: Release the trigger switch (8).
What are the recommended working procedures for the METABO WP 850-125?
Grinding and Sanding Operations:
Press down the machine evenly on the surface and move it back and forth so that the surface of the workpiece does not become too hot. For rough grinding, position the machine at an angle of 30° – 40° for the best working results.
Cut-off Grinding:
Always work against the run of the disc. Otherwise, the machine may kick back from the cut in an out-of-control manner. Guide the machine evenly at a speed suitable for the material being processed. Do not tilt, apply excessive force, or sway from side to side.
Wire Brushing:
Press down the machine evenly.
How should I clean my METABO WP 850-125?
Particles may become deposited inside the power tool during operation, which can impair cooling and create an electrical hazard from conductive build-up.
The METABO WP 850-125 power tool should be cleaned regularly, often, and thoroughly through all front and rear air vents using a vacuum cleaner or by blowing in dry air. Prior to this operation, separate the power tool from the power source and wear protective glasses and a suitable dust mask. Ensure appropriate suction is available when blowing out vents.
What should I do if my METABO WP 850-125 does not start?
If your METABO WP 850-125 does not start, the restart protection may be active. This can happen if the mains plug is inserted with the machine switched on or if the power supply is restored following an interruption.
To resolve this, switch the machine off and back on again.
