What are the key safety warnings for operating the cordless hedge trimmer?

Keep all parts of the body away from the cutter blade. Do not remove cut material or hold material to be cut when blades are moving. Ensure the switch is off when clearing jammed material.

Carry the hedge trimmer by the handle with the cutter blade stopped. Always fit the cutting device cover when transporting or storing.

Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, as the blade may contact hidden wiring.

DANGER – Keep hands away from the blade.

Do not use the hedge trimmer in rain or wet conditions.

First-time users should be shown how to use the trimmer by an experienced user.

Before use, read all instructions and markings on the battery charger, battery, and product using the battery.

If operating time becomes excessively short, stop immediately to avoid overheating, burns, or explosion.

If electrolyte gets into eyes, rinse with clear water and seek medical attention immediately.

Do not short the battery cartridge: avoid touching terminals with conductive material, avoid storing with metal objects (nails, coins), do not expose to water or rain.

Do not store the tool and battery where temperatures may reach or exceed 50 °C (122 °F).

Do not incinerate the battery, even if severely damaged or worn out; it can explode in a fire.

Be careful not to drop or strike the battery.

Do not use a damaged battery.

Follow regulations for transporting lithium-ion batteries. For commercial transport, observe special requirements on packaging and labeling. Consult an expert for hazardous materials.

How can I check the remaining battery capacity?

For battery cartridges with an indicator (Fig.2): Press the check button (2) on the battery cartridge. The indicator lamps (1) will light up for a few seconds to show the remaining capacity.

What are some tips for maintaining maximum battery life?

Charge the battery cartridge before it is completely discharged. Always stop tool operation and charge it when you notice less tool power.

Never recharge a fully charged battery cartridge. Overcharging shortens the battery service life.

Charge the battery cartridge at room temperature (10 °C – 40 °C / 50 °F – 104 °F). Let a hot battery cartridge cool down before charging.

Charge the battery cartridge if you do not use it for a long period (more than six months).


How do I install or remove the battery cartridge?

CAUTION: Always switch off the tool before installing or removing the battery cartridge.

CAUTION: Hold the tool and battery cartridge firmly during installation or removal.

To install (Fig.1): Align the tongue on the battery cartridge (3) with the groove in the housing and slip it into place. Insert it fully until it locks with a click. If the red indicator (1) on the upper side of the button (2) is visible, it is not locked completely.

CAUTION: Always install fully until the red indicator is hidden. Do not force the cartridge if it doesn’t slide in easily.

To remove (Fig.1): Slide the button (2) on the front of the cartridge and slide the cartridge (3) out of the tool.


What does the tool/battery protection system do?

The tool has a protection system that automatically cuts off power to the motor to extend tool and battery life. It stops if the tool or battery encounters the following conditions:

Overload protection: If the tool is overloaded by entangled branches/debris, the middle indicators blink and the tool stops. Turn the tool off, remove the cause, then turn it back on.

NOTICE: If the tool turns off automatically without indication due to overload, switch off, remove the battery, clear debris (use pliers), reinstall the battery, and turn the tool on again.

Overheat protection: If the tool or battery overheats, the corresponding indicators blink, and the tool stops. Let the tool/battery cool down before restarting.

Overdischarge protection: When battery capacity is low, the indicator blinks, and the tool stops. Remove and charge the battery.


How can I adjust the handle angle?

CAUTION: Ensure the handle is locked in the desired position before operation.

CAUTION: Do not pull down the lever while pulling the switch trigger or vice versa.

The handle can be set to 0°, 45°, or 90° left or right.

To change the angle (Fig.3): Pull down the lever (1), turn the handle to the desired position, and then release the lever to lock it.


How do I turn the hedge trimmer on and off?

WARNING: This tool has a lock-off lever to prevent unintended starting. NEVER use if it runs without pressing the lock-off lever first. Return for repair if malfunctioning.

WARNING: NEVER tape down or defeat the lock-off lever.

WARNING: Check switch trigger and lever actuate properly and return to “OFF” when released before installing the battery.

CAUTION: Never put your finger on the switch when carrying.

NOTICE: Do not pull the trigger hard without pressing the lock-off lever; this can cause breakage.

1. Press and hold the main power button (Fig.4 – 2) to turn the tool on. The power lamp (Fig.4 – 1) lights up.

2. To start cutting (Fig.5): Depress the lock-off lever (2), then press the switch lever (1) and pull the switch trigger (3).

3. Release the switch trigger (3) to stop.

4. To turn off the tool completely: Press and hold the main power button (Fig.4 – 2) again. The power lamp (Fig.4 – 1) goes off.

NOTE: The tool turns off automatically if not operated for a certain period.


How do I adjust the cutting speed?

You can adjust the tool speed by tapping the main power button (Fig.6 – 2) while the tool is on (power lamp Fig.6 – 1 is lit).

Each time you tap the main power button, the speed level changes.

How does the reverse button work?

The reverse button (Fig.7 – 1) is used only for removing branches and debris entangled in the shear blades.

WARNING: If debris cannot be removed by the reverse function, switch off the tool, remove the battery, and then remove debris using tools like pliers. Failure to do so may result in injury from accidental start-up or blade movement.

To reverse the shear blades:

1. Ensure the shear blades have stopped moving.

2. Tap the reverse button (1).

3. Press the switch lever and pull the switch trigger while pressing the lock-off lever.

4. The power lamp starts blinking, and the shear blades move in reverse.

Once the entangled debris is removed, the tool returns to regular movement, and the power lamp stops blinking and lights up steadily.

NOTE: If debris isn’t removed, release and pull the switch trigger again until it is cleared.

NOTE: If you tap the reverse button while blades are moving, the tool stops and becomes ready for reverse movement.


How do I install or remove the shear blades?

CAUTION: Always switch off the tool and remove the battery before working on the tool.

CAUTION: Always wear gloves when handling blades.

CAUTION: Attach the blade cover before removing or installing blades.

NOTICE: Do not wipe grease off the gear and crank when replacing blades.

NOTICE: If parts other than blades (like rods) are worn, ask Makita Authorized Service Centers for replacement/repairs.

You can install 500 mm, 600 mm, or 750 mm shear blades.

Removal:

1. Place the tool upside down.

2. Remove 6 screws (Fig.8 – 1).

3. Remove the cover (Fig.9 – 1) and the plate (Fig.9 – 2). (Plate might remain on the cover).

4. Remove the rod (Fig.10 – 1). (Rod might remain on the cover).

5. Remove 2 screws (Fig.11 – 2), the felt pad (Fig.11 – 1), washers (Fig.11 – 3), and sleeves (Fig.11 – 4).

6. Remove the shear blades (Fig.11 – 5).

7. Remove the blade cover from the old blades.

Installation:

1. Attach the blade cover to the new shear blades.

2. Adjust the crank so that 2 holes are lined up on the alignment line (Fig.12 – 2).

3. Align the protrusions (Fig.13 – 1) on the shear blades vertically at the same position.

4. Attach the felt pad (Fig.14 – 1) to the shear blades.

5. NOTICE: Apply a small amount of grease to the inner periphery of the hole of the rod (Fig.17 – 1).

6. Insert the protrusion (Fig.15 – 1) on the shear blades into the hole (Fig.15 – 2) on the rod.

7. Align the felt pad (Fig.15 – 3) with the holes on the tool.

8. Attach new sleeves (Fig.15 – 5) and washers (Fig.15 – 4).

NOTICE: Be careful not to lose washers and sleeves.

9. Align holes on shear blades with tool holes, and tighten 2 screws (Fig.16 – 1) to fix the blades.

10. Attach the rod (Fig.17 – 1).

NOTICE: Apply a small amount of grease to the inner periphery of the small hole (Fig.17 – 2) of the rod.

NOTICE: Ensure the protrusion on the shear blades fits into the small hole (Fig.17 – 2) on the rod.

11. Attach the plate (Fig.18 – 2).

NOTICE: Ensure the protrusion (Fig.18 – 1) on the shear blades fits into the hole on the plate.

12. Attach the cover (Fig.19 – 1), then tighten 6 screws (Fig.19 – 2).

NOTICE: Ensure the 2 long screws go into the center holes.

NOTICE: If blades don’t move smoothly, they are not engaged properly with the rods. Reinstall the blades.


How do I install or remove the chip receiver (optional accessory)?

CAUTION: Always wear gloves when installing or removing the chip receiver.

NOTICE: The blade cover cannot be installed with the chip receiver. Uninstall the chip receiver before carrying/storing to attach the blade cover.

NOTICE: Remove the blade cover before installing the chip receiver.

NOTICE: Ensure the chip receiver does not overlap the branch catcher (Fig.22 – 1).

NOTICE: Never try to remove the chip receiver by excessive force if hooks are locked in grooves.

Installation:

1. The chip receiver can be installed on either side.

2. Align the hooks (Fig.20 – 1, Fig.21 – 1) of the chip receiver with the arrow marks (Fig.20 – 2) on the shear blades.

3. Press the chip receiver against the blades so the hooks fit into the grooves.

Removal:

Press the levers (Fig.23 – 1) on both sides to release the hooks and remove the receiver.


What are the basic operating procedures and precautions?

WARNING: Keep hands away from shear blades.

CAUTION: Avoid operating in very hot weather. Be careful of your physical condition.

CAUTION: Be careful not to accidentally contact metal fences or hard objects. Blades may break.

CAUTION: Do not allow blades to contact the ground. Tool may recoil.

CAUTION: Overreaching, especially from a ladder, is dangerous. Do not work on wobbly or infirm surfaces.

NOTICE: Do not cut branches thicker than 10 mm. Cut branches to 10 cm lower than desired height with branch cutters first (Fig.24).

NOTICE: Do not cut dead trees or similar hard objects; this may damage the tool.

NOTICE: Do not trim grass/weeds; blades may tangle.

Operation Steps:

1. Hold the tool with both hands.

2. Press the switch lever and pull the switch trigger while pressing the lock-off lever.

3. Move the tool forward (Fig.25).

Basic Technique (Fig.26): Tilt blades toward trimming direction, move calmly and slowly (3-4 seconds per meter).

Trimming Hedge Top (Fig.27): Tie a string at the desired height and trim along it for even results.

Using Chip Receiver (Fig.28): If attached, it gathers leaves for easier cleanup.

Trimming Hedge Side (Fig.29): Cut evenly from bottom to top.

Shaping (Boxwood, etc.) (Fig.30): Trim from the root to the top for a rounded finish.


How should I clean the hedge trimmer?

CAUTION: Always switch off the tool and remove the battery before cleaning.

Clean the tool by wiping off dust with a dry cloth or one dipped in soapy water and wrung out.

NOTICE: Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, or similar substances. This may cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks.


How should I maintain the shear blades?

Before operation or once per hour during operation: Apply low-viscosity oil (machine oil, or spray-type lubricating oil) to the shear blades (Fig.31).

After operation:

1. Remove dust from both sides of the blades with a wire brush.

2. Wipe blades off with a cloth.

3. Apply low-viscosity oil (machine oil, or spray-type lubricating oil) to the shear blades (Fig.32).

NOTICE: Do not wash the shear blades in water, as this may cause rust or damage.

NOTICE: Dirt and corrosion cause excessive blade friction and shorten operating time per battery charge.


How should I store the hedge trimmer?

Attach the blade cover to the shear blades so they are not exposed.

Store the tool out of the reach of children.

Store the tool in a place not exposed to moisture or rain.

The hook hole (Fig.33 – 1) in the tool bottom can be used for hanging the tool on a nail or screw.


How do I grind the shear blades?

NOTICE: If blades are considerably deformed by grinding, replace them with new ones.

CAUTION: Before grinding, ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed.

1. Install the battery cartridge.

2. Turn on and start the tool briefly so the upper and lower blades are positioned alternately (Fig.34).

3. Turn off the tool and remove the battery cartridge.

4. Remove the screw (Fig.35 – 1) and the branch catcher (Fig.35 – 2).

5. Set a file (Fig.36 – 1) at a 45° angle (Fig.36 – 2) and grind the upper blade from 3 directions with the file.

6. Place the tool upside down and remove burrs from the shear blades with the file (Fig.37 – 1).

7. Set the file angle to 45° and grind the lower blade from 3 directions.

8. Return the tool to normal position and remove any remaining burrs from the blades with the file.

9. Reattach the branch catcher by tightening the screw.


How and when should I apply grease?

Interval of lubrication: Every 100 operating hours.

1. Remove 3 screws (Fig.38 – 1) and the bottom cover (Fig.38 – 2).

2. Remove the cap from the grease vessel (Fig.39 – 2).

3. Attach the grease vessel to the hole on the cover (Fig.39 – 1) by turning the grease vessel.

4. Apply the grease to the tool (Approximately 5 g as a guide).

5. Remove the grease vessel.

6. Attach the bottom cover and tighten the 3 screws.
