What does the tool/battery protection system do?
The tool is equipped with a tool/battery protection system that automatically cuts off power to the motor to extend tool and battery life. The tool will automatically stop during operation if the tool or battery is placed under one of the following conditions:
- Overload protection: When the tool/battery is operated in a manner that causes it to draw an abnormally high current, the tool stops automatically. In this situation, turn the tool off and stop the application that caused the tool to become overloaded. Then turn the tool on to restart.
- Overheat protection: When the tool/battery is overheated, the tool stops automatically and the lamp will blink. In this situation, let the tool cool down before turning the tool on again.
- Overdischarge protection: When the battery capacity is not enough, the tool stops automatically. In this case, remove the battery from the tool and charge the battery.
How does the switch action work?
To start the tool, pull the switch trigger. Tool speed is increased by increasing pressure on the switch trigger. Release the switch trigger to stop. The tool automatically stops if you keep pulling the switch trigger for about 6 minutes.
How does the lamp work?
Pull the switch trigger to light up the lamp. The lamp keeps on lighting while the switch trigger is being pulled. The lamp goes out approximately 10 seconds after releasing the switch trigger. When the tool is overheated, the tool stops automatically and the lamp starts flashing. In this case, release the switch trigger. The lamp turns off in 1 minute(s).
How do I use the reversing switch?
Depress the reversing switch lever from the A side for clockwise rotation or from the B side for counterclockwise rotation. When the reversing switch lever is in the neutral position, the switch lever cannot be pulled. Always check the direction of rotation before operation. Use the reversing switch only after the tool comes to a complete stop. When not operating the tool, always set the reversing switch lever to the neutral position.
How do I use the speed change knob?
Two speed ranges can be preselected with the speed change knob. To change the speed, turn the speed change knob so that the pointer points to the position 1 for low speed mode or the position 2 for high speed mode. Use the speed change knob only after the tool comes to a complete stop. Always set the speed change knob carefully into the correct position. If the rotation speed significantly decreases during operation in the high speed mode, stop the tool and change the mode to the low speed mode.
How does the electric brake work?
This tool is equipped with an electric brake. If the tool consistently fails to quickly cease to function after the switch trigger is released, have the tool serviced at a Makita service center.
How does the soft start feature work?
This function allows the smooth start-up of the tool by limiting the start-up torque.
How do I install the side grip (auxiliary handle)?
Screw the side grip on the tool securely. The side grip can be installed on either side of the tool. Always be sure that the side grip is installed securely before operation.
How do I install the key holder?
Screw the key holder on the tool securely. Then place the chuck key in position. Always be sure that the key holder is installed securely before operation.
How do I install a drill bit (for model DDA450)?
Place the drill bit in the chuck as far as it will go. Tighten the chuck by hand. Place the chuck key in each of the three holes and tighten clockwise. Be sure to tighten all three chuck holes evenly. To remove the drill bit, turn the chuck key counterclockwise in just one hole, then loosen the chuck by hand. After use, return the chuck key to the key holder on the tool.
How do I install a drill bit (for model DDA451)?
Pull the sleeve in the direction of the arrow and insert the drill bit into the sleeve as far as it will go. Then release the sleeve to secure the drill bit. To remove the drill bit, pull the sleeve in the direction of the arrow and pull the drill bit out. If the drill bit is not inserted deep enough into the sleeve, the sleeve will not return to its original position and the drill bit will not be secured. After inserting the drill bit, make sure that it is firmly secured. If it comes out, do not use it.
How do I use the hook?
To use the hook, simply lift up hook until it snaps into the open position. When not in use, always lower hook until it snaps into the closed position. Always remove the battery when hanging the tool with the hook. Never hook the tool at high location or on potentially unstable surface.
How do I connect a lanyard (tether strap) to the hook?
Make sure that the hook is securely installed with the screws. Do not install or remove any accessory while hanging the tool. Always use a locking carabiner (multi-action and screw gate type) and be sure to attach the lanyard (tether strap) to the double looped portion of the hook.
How should I hold the tool when using it?
Grasp the handle with one hand and the front handle with the other hand. This is a powerful tool, so high torque is developed and it is important that the tool should be securely held and properly braced.
How do I perform a drilling operation in wood?
When drilling in wood, the best results are obtained with wood drills equipped with a guide screw. The guide screw makes drilling easier by pulling the drill bit into the workpiece.
How do I perform a drilling operation in metal?
To prevent the drill bit from slipping when starting a hole, make an indentation with a center-punch and hammer at the point to be drilled. Place the point of the drill bit in the indentation and start drilling. Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are iron and brass which should be drilled dry.
What should I be aware of while drilling?
Apply only enough pressure to keep the drill bit cutting. Excessive pressure will not speed up the drilling. Hold the tool firmly and exert care when the drill bit begins to break through the workpiece. A stuck drill bit can be removed simply by setting the reversing switch to reverse rotation in order to back out. Always secure workpieces in a vise or similar hold-down device. Avoid drilling in material that you suspect contains hidden nails or other things that may cause the drill bit to bind or break. If the tool is operated continuously until the battery cartridge has discharged, allow the tool to rest for 15 minutes before proceeding with a fresh battery.
What are the safety warnings specific for using the tool at height?
