What should I do before adjusting or checking any function on the tool?

Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed.

How do I install or remove the battery cartridge?

Always switch off the tool before insertion or removal of the battery cartridge. To remove the battery cartridge, withdraw it from the tool while pressing the buttons on both sides of the cartridge. To insert the battery cartridge, align the tongue on the battery cartridge with the groove in the housing and slip it into place. Always insert it all the way until it locks in place with a little click. Do not use force when inserting the battery cartridge.

How do I charge the battery?

Plug the battery charger into the proper AC voltage source. The charging light will flash in green color. Insert the battery cartridge so that the plus and minus terminals on the battery cartridge are on the same sides as their respective markings on the charger. Insert the cartridge fully into the port so that it rests on the charger port floor. When the battery cartridge is inserted, the charging light color will change from green to red and charging will begin. The charging light will remain lit steadily during charging. When the charging light color changes from red to green, the charging cycle is complete. If you leave the battery cartridge in the charger after the charging cycle is complete, the charger will switch into its “trickle charge (maintenance charge)” mode. After charging, unplug the charger from the power source.

What does it mean if the charging light flashes in red when charging?

If you charge a battery cartridge from a just operated tool or one that has been left in a location exposed to direct sunlight or heat for a long time, the charging light may flash in red. If this occurs, wait for a while. Charging will begin after the battery cartridge cools.

What does it mean if the charging light flashes alternately in green and red?

If the charging light flashes alternately in green and red, charging is not possible. The terminals on the charger or battery cartridge are clogged with dust, or the battery cartridge is worn out or damaged.

What is “trickle charge (maintenance charge)”?

If you leave the battery cartridge in the charger to prevent spontaneous discharging after full charge, the charger will switch into its “trickle charge (maintenance charge)” mode and keep the battery cartridge fresh and fully charged.

What are tips for maintaining maximum battery life?

Charge the battery cartridge before it is completely discharged. Always stop tool operation and charge the battery cartridge when you notice less tool power. Never recharge a fully charged battery cartridge. Overcharging shortens the battery service life. Charge the battery cartridge with room temperature at 10°C – 40°C (50°F – 104°F). Let a hot battery cartridge cool down before charging it. Charge the Nickel Metal Hydride battery cartridge when you do not use it for more than six months.

How does the switch work?

Before inserting the battery cartridge into the tool, always check to see that the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to the “OFF” position when released. To start the tool, simply pull the switch trigger. Tool speed is increased by increasing pressure on the switch trigger. Release the switch trigger to stop.

What is the electric brake?

This tool is equipped with an electric brake. If the tool consistently fails to quickly stop after switch trigger release, have the tool serviced at a Makita service center.

How does the reversing switch work?

This tool has a reversing switch to change the direction of rotation. Depress the reversing switch lever from the A side for clockwise rotation or from the B side for counterclockwise rotation. When the reversing switch lever is in the neutral position, the switch trigger cannot be pulled. Always check the direction of rotation before operation. Use the reversing switch only after the tool comes to a complete stop. When not operating the tool, always set the reversing switch lever to the neutral position.

How do I change the speed?

To change the speed, first switch off the tool and then slide the speed change lever to the “II” side for high speed or “I” side for low speed. Be sure that the speed change lever is set to the correct position before operation. Always set the speed change lever fully to the correct position. Do not use the speed change lever while the tool is running.

How do I adjust the fastening torque?

The fastening torque can be adjusted in 17 steps by turning the adjusting ring so that its graduations are aligned with the pointer on the tool body. The fastening torque is minimum when the number 1 is aligned with the pointer, and maximum when the marking is aligned with the pointer. The clutch will slip at various torque levels when set at the number 1 to 16. The clutch is designed not to slip at the marking. Before actual operation, drive a trial screw into your material or a piece of duplicate material to determine which torque level is required for a particular application. Do not operate the tool with the adjusting ring set between the number 16 and the marking.

What should I do before carrying out any work on the tool?

Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed.

How do I install the side grip (auxiliary handle)?

Always be sure that the side grip is installed securely before operation. Always use the side grip to ensure operating safety. Install the side grip so that the teeth on the grip fit in between the protrusions on the tool barrel. Then tighten the grip by turning clockwise at the desired position. It may be swung 360° so as to be secured at any position.

How do I install or remove the driver bit or drill bit?

Hold the ring and turn the sleeve counterclockwise to open the chuck jaws. Place the bit in the chuck as far as it will go. Hold the ring firmly and turn the sleeve clockwise to tighten the chuck. To remove the bit, hold the ring and turn the sleeve counterclockwise. When not using the driver bit, keep it in the bit holders. Bits 45 mm (1-3/4") long can be kept there.

How do I use the adjustable depth rod?

The adjustable depth rod is used to drill holes of uniform depth. Loosen the clamp screw, set to the desired position, then tighten the clamp screw.

How do I perform a screwdriving operation?

Place the point of the driver bit in the screw head and apply pressure to the tool. Start the tool slowly and then increase the speed gradually. Release the switch trigger as soon as the clutch cuts in.

What should I be mindful of during screwdriving?

Make sure that the driver bit is inserted straight in the screw head, or the screw and/or bit may be damaged. When driving wood screws, predrill pilot holes to make driving easier and to prevent splitting of the workpiece. If the tool is operated continuously until the battery cartridge has discharged, allow the tool to rest for 15 minutes before proceeding with a fresh battery.

How do I perform a drilling operation?

First, turn the adjusting ring so that the pointer points to the marking. Then proceed with drilling.

What is the recommended size of pilot holes for wood screws?

Nominal diameter of wood screw (mm) Recommended size of pilot hole (mm)
3.1 (1/8”) 2.0 – 2.2 (5/64” – 3/32”)
3.5 (9/64”) 2.2 – 2.5 (3/32” – 3/32”)
3.8 (5/32”) 2.5 – 2.8 (3/32” – 7/64”)
4.5 (11/64”) 2.9 – 3.2 (7/64” – 1/8”)
4.8 (3/16”) 3.1 – 3.4 (1/8” – 9/64”)
5.1 (13/64”) 3.3 – 3.6 (1/8” – 9/64”)
5.5 (7/32”) 3.7 – 3.9 (9/64” – 5/32”)
5.8 (7/32”) 4.0 – 4.2 (5/32” – 11/64”)
6.1 (15/64”) 4.2 – 4.4 (11/64” – 11/64”)

What are the best practices for drilling in wood?

When drilling in wood, the best results are obtained with wood drills equipped with a guide screw. The guide screw makes drilling easier by pulling the bit into the workpiece.

What are the best practices for drilling in metal?

To prevent the bit from slipping when starting a hole, make an indentation with a center-punch and hammer at the point to be drilled. Place the point of the bit in the indentation and start drilling. Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are iron and brass which should be drilled dry.

What should I be mindful of during drilling?

Pressing excessively on the tool will not speed up the drilling. In fact, this excessive pressure will only serve to damage the tip of your bit, decrease the tool performance and shorten the service life of the tool. There is a tremendous force exerted on the tool/bit at the time of hole break through. Hold the tool firmly and exert care when the bit begins to break through the workpiece. A stuck bit can be removed simply by setting the reversing switch to reverse rotation in order to back out. However, the tool may back out abruptly if you do not hold it firmly. Always secure small workpieces in a vise or similar hold-down device. If the tool is operated continuously until the battery cartridge has discharged, allow the tool to rest for 15 minutes before proceeding with a fresh battery.

What should I do before attempting to perform inspection or maintenance?

Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed.

How do I replace carbon brushes?

Remove and check the carbon brushes regularly. Replace when they wear down to the limit mark. Keep the carbon brushes clean and free to slip in the holders. Both carbon brushes should be replaced at the same time. Use only identical carbon brushes. Use a screwdriver to remove the brush holder caps. Take out the worn carbon brushes, insert the new ones and secure the brush holder caps. After replacing brushes, insert the battery cartridge into the tool and break in brushes by running the tool with no load for about 1 minute. Then check the tool while running and electric brake operation when releasing the switch trigger. If the electric brake is not working well, ask your local Makita service center for repair. To maintain product safety and reliability, repairs, any other maintenance or adjustment should be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory Service Centers, always using Makita replacement parts.

How do I recycle the battery?

Remove the battery from the tool. Take the battery to your nearest Makita Factory Service Center or your nearest Makita Authorized Service Center or Distributor that has been designated as a Makita battery recycling location.

What accessories are recommended for use with this tool?

Drill bits, screw bits, various types of Makita genuine batteries and chargers, grip assembly, depth rod, rubber pad assembly, wool bonnet, foam polishing pad, and plastic carrying case.
