For models with a switchable voltage, follow these steps before connecting the power cord:

1. Locate the AC voltage selector switch on the rear panel of the KENWOOD VR-307.

2. Check the prevailing voltage in your area (e.g., 110-120V or 220-240V).

3. Use a small screwdriver or other pointed tool to move the switch lever to match your local line voltage.

Note: The unit is preset at the factory for the area to which it is shipped. Only change this setting if you are in an area with a different voltage. Improper setting can cause damage not covered by warranty.

To clean the cabinet of your KENWOOD VR-307, use a clean, dry cloth. Do not use volatile solvents such as alcohol, paint thinner, gasoline, or benzine. Additionally, avoid using contact cleaners, especially those containing oil, as they could cause malfunctions or deform plastic components.

To connect your audio components to the KENWOOD VR-307, follow these general steps using the appropriate audio cables (RCA cords):

CD Player: Connect the CD player’s OUT jacks to the CD IN jacks on the receiver.

Cassette Deck or MD Recorder: Connect the recorder’s OUT (PLAY) jacks to the MD/TAPE IN (REC) jacks on the receiver. Connect the recorder’s IN (REC) jacks to the MD/TAPE OUT (PLAY) jacks on the receiver.

To connect your video components, use standard RCA video (yellow) and audio (red and white) cables. For models that support it, you can also use S-VIDEO cords for better picture quality.

DVD or LD Player (Playback):

1. Connect the player’s VIDEO OUT to the VIDEO2 IN or VIDEO3 IN jack on the receiver.

Monitor TV:

1. Connect the MONITOR OUT (VIDEO) jack on the receiver to the VIDEO IN jack on your TV.

Using S-VIDEO (if available on your model):

If you connect a component using an S-VIDEO jack, you must also use S-VIDEO jacks for all other video connections in that chain (e.g., from VCR to receiver, and from receiver to TV) to see the picture.

The digital input jacks on your KENWOOD VR-307 can accept DTS, Dolby Digital (AC-3), or PCM signals. Use either an optical fiber cable or a coaxial (RCA) digital cable.

For a Component with an OPTICAL Digital Output (e.g., DVD player, CD player):

1. Remove the protective cap from the OPTICAL input jack on the receiver (e.g., VIDEO 3).

2. Connect one end of the optical fiber cable to the OPTICAL DIGITAL OUT jack of your component.

3. Connect the other end to the OPTICAL DIGITAL IN jack on the receiver.

4. You must also connect the component’s analog audio and video signals to the corresponding jacks on the receiver (e.g., VIDEO 3 audio and video inputs).

For a Component with a COAXIAL Digital Output (e.g., DVD player, CD player):

1. Connect one end of a coaxial digital cable (RCA pin cord) to the COAXIAL DIGITAL OUT jack of your component.

2. Connect the other end to the COAXIAL DIGITAL IN jack on the receiver (e.g., VIDEO 2 or CD).

3. You must also connect the component’s analog audio and video signals (if applicable) to the corresponding jacks on the receiver.

After connecting any digital components, you must select the correct input mode on the receiver to hear the sound.

For inputs like CD, VIDEO2, and VIDEO3 that have both analog and digital jacks, you must select which input type to use. The factory setting is for digital input.

1. Turn on the KENWOOD VR-307 receiver.

2. Use the INPUT SELECTOR knob to select the source you want to set (CD, VIDEO2, or VIDEO3).

3. Press the INPUT MODE key on the front panel repeatedly to cycle through the available settings.

The settings are as follows:

For DTS compatible models (when DTS is playing):

D-AUTO: Selects the digital input and automatically chooses the listening mode based on the signal type (DTS, Dolby Digital, PCM).

D-MANUAL: Selects the digital input but allows you to manually choose the listening mode.

For other modes:

D-AUTO: (As above) for digital sources.

D-MANUAL: (As above) for digital sources.

ANALOG: Selects the analog input for sources like a VCR or cassette deck connected to those jacks.

Connecting the AM Loop Antenna:

1. Assemble the AM loop antenna and its stand if necessary.

2. Locate the AM antenna terminals on the rear panel of the KENWOOD VR-307.

3. Push the lever on each terminal, insert the bare end of the antenna wire, and release the lever to secure it.

4. Position the loop antenna for the best reception, as far as possible from the receiver, TV, and other electronic devices.

Connecting the FM Indoor Antenna:

1. Locate the FM 75Ω terminal on the rear panel.

2. Push the T-shaped plug of the supplied indoor antenna onto the terminal.

3. Extend the antenna and position it for the best reception. This antenna is for temporary use; an outdoor antenna is recommended for stable signal reception.

Ensure the receiver is powered off before connecting speakers.

1. Prepare your speaker wires by stripping about 1 cm (1/2 inch) of insulation from the ends and twisting the bare wires tightly.

2. For each speaker terminal on the rear of the KENWOOD VR-307 (Front A, Front B, Center, Surround):

Loosen the terminal knob.

Insert the bare wire fully into the terminal hole.

Tighten the knob to secure the wire.

3. Connect the positive (+) terminal on the receiver to the positive (+) terminal on the speaker. Connect the negative (-) terminal on the receiver to the negative (-) terminal on the speaker.

Connections:

Front Speakers A: Connect your main left and right speakers here.

Center Speaker: Connect your center channel speaker here.

Surround Speakers: Connect your left and right surround speakers here. Be sure to connect both.

Powered Subwoofer: Connect a single RCA cable from the SUBWOOFER PRE OUT jack on the receiver to the line-level input on your powered subwoofer.

Important: Never let the bare speaker wires touch each other or the metal chassis of the receiver, as this can cause a short circuit. Ensure correct polarity (+ to +, – to -) for proper sound imaging.

To prepare your remote control, you need to install the supplied batteries.

For remote model RC-R0608:

1. Remove the cover on the back of the remote.

2. Insert four AAA-size (LR03) batteries, making sure to match the polarity (+ and -) markings inside the compartment.

3. Close the cover securely.

For remote model RC-R0712:

1. Remove the cover on the back of the remote.

2. Insert two AA-size (R6) batteries, matching the polarity markings inside the compartment.

3. Close the cover securely.

When operating, point the remote control towards the remote sensor on the front of the KENWOOD VR-307. When pressing more than one key in succession, leave an interval of at least 1 second between presses.

To get the best surround sound experience, you need to configure the speaker settings. Sit in your normal listening position for this process.

1. Turn on the KENWOOD VR-307 receiver.

2. Press the SETUP key. The subwoofer setting (SUBW) will appear.

3. Use the MULTI CONTROL knob (or TUNING/SKIP keys on the remote) to select “SUBW YES” if you have a subwoofer, or “SUBW NO” if you do not. Press SETUP to confirm.

4. The front speaker setting (FRNT) will appear. Select “FRNT LRG” (large) or “FRNT NML” (normal/small) based on your front speakers’ size. Press SETUP.

5. The center speaker setting (CNTR) will appear. Select “CNTR LRG” (large), “CNTR NML” (normal), or “CNTR NO” (no center speaker) as appropriate. Press SETUP.

6. The surround speaker setting (SURR) will appear. Select “SURR LRG”, “SURR NML”, “SURR YES”, or “SURR NO” based on your setup. Press SETUP.

7. The receiver will now enter the speaker volume level adjustment mode. A test tone will issue from each speaker for 2 seconds in sequence (Lch → Cch → Rch → RS → LS → SW → Lch). Use the MULTI CONTROL knob to adjust the volume of each speaker channel as the tone is playing so that they all sound equally loud from your listening position.

8. After the test tone finishes, press SETUP. You will now set the distance to the speakers.

9. Use the MULTI CONTROL knob to input the distance from your listening position to the front speakers. Press SETUP.

10. Repeat the previous step for the center and surround speakers as prompted.

11. When the input indication reappears on the display, setup is complete.

If the input level of an analog source is too high, causing the CLIP INDICATOR to light up, you should adjust the input level.

1. Use the INPUT SELECTOR knob to select the analog source whose level you want to adjust.

2. Press the SOUND key on the front panel several times until “INPUT” appears on the display.

3. Use the MULTI CONTROL knob (or TUNING/SKIP on the remote) to adjust the input level down (to -3 or -6) until the CLIP INDICATOR no longer lights up during the loudest passages.

4. The adjustment mode will exit automatically after about eight seconds, or you can press the SOUND key to return to the normal display.

1. Turn on the power to the KENWOOD VR-307 and any related components you wish to use.

2. Use the INPUT SELECTOR knob on the front panel to select the source you want to listen to (e.g., “CD”, “TAPE”, “VIDEO1”). Alternatively, use the input selector keys (AUDIO, VIDEO) on the remote control.

3. If you selected a source connected via digital input (CD, VIDEO2, VIDEO3), make sure the correct input mode (digital or analog) is selected.

4. Press the SPEAKERS A/B keys to select the desired speaker system (A, B, or A+B). The corresponding indicator will light up on the display.

5. Start playback from the selected source component (e.g., press play on your CD player).

6. Use the VOLUME CONTROL knob (or VOLUME keys on the remote) to adjust the volume to your desired level.

You can adjust the bass and treble when the receiver is in PCM stereo or analog stereo mode.

1. Press the SOUND key on the front panel. “BASS” will appear on the display.

2. Use the MULTI CONTROL knob (or TUNING/SKIP on the remote) to adjust the low-frequency range. The level is adjustable from -10 to +10.

3. Press the SOUND key again. “TREB” will appear on the display.

4. Use the MULTI CONTROL knob to adjust the high-frequency range from -10 to +10.

The adjustment item will be displayed for approximately 8 seconds before returning to the normal display.

For a one-touch low-frequency emphasis, press the BASS BOOST key on the front panel. This will set the bass level to the maximum (+10) setting. This function is available in PCM stereo and analog stereo modes. To switch back to the previous setting, press the BASS BOOST key again.

To temporarily mute the sound from the speakers, press the MUTE key on the remote control. The “MUTE” indicator on the front panel display will blink. To cancel the mute function, press the MUTE key again or adjust the volume.

To record from a music source like a CD player or turntable to a cassette deck:

1. Use the INPUT SELECTOR knob to select the source you want to record (e.g., CD, PHONO). Do not select “TAPE”.

2. Set your cassette deck (connected to the MD/TAPE jacks) to record mode.

3. Start playback on the source component, then start recording on the cassette deck.

1. Use the input selector to select the TUNER.

2. Press the BAND key to select the desired broadcast band (FM or AM).

3. Press the AUTO key to select the tuning method. When “AUTO” is lit on the display, it’s in auto tuning. When not lit, it’s in manual tuning.

Auto tuning: Use the MULTI CONTROL knob (or TUNING/SKIP keys on the remote). The receiver will automatically scan and stop at the next station it receives.

Manual tuning: Use the MULTI CONTROL knob (or TUNING/SKIP keys on the remote) to tune to the desired frequency step by step. This is useful for weak stations. Note that stereo broadcasts will be received in monaural in this mode.

When a station is received, “TUNED” will appear on the display. If it’s a stereo FM broadcast, “STEREO” will also appear.

You can store up to 40 of your favorite radio stations.

1. Tune to the station you want to store.

2. Press the MEMORY key while the station is being received. The preset number will blink on the display for 5 seconds.

3. Within those 5 seconds, use the MULTI CONTROL knob to select a preset channel number (1-40).

4. Press the MEMORY key again to accept the setting. The station is now stored.

Repeat steps 1-4 to store other stations. If you store a new station in an already used preset number, the old station will be replaced.

To listen to a station you have already saved as a preset:

1. Use the remote control to select the tuner as the source. The remote control will switch to tuner operating mode.

2. Enter the number of the preset you want to receive (up to “40”) using the numeric keys on the remote.

For a single-digit preset (e.g., 5): Press 5.

For a two-digit preset (e.g., 15): Press +10, then 5.

For preset 20: Press +10, +10, then 0.

1. Ensure you have completed the “Preparing for surround sound” speaker setup.

2. Turn on your KENWOOD VR-307 and the source component (e.g., DVD player).

3. Set the INPUT SELECTOR to the component you wish to play in surround sound.

4. Use the INPUT MODE key to select the correct input (analog or digital). For DTS or Dolby Digital, you must select a digital input. Note that playing a DTS source through an analog input will produce loud noise.

5. Start playing the video software on your source component.

6. Press the LISTEN MODE key repeatedly to select the desired listening mode. The available modes will depend on the type of input signal and your speaker settings. Available modes may include:

DTS

DOLBY DIGITAL (AC-3)

DOLBY PRO LOGIC

DOLBY 3 STEREO

VIRTUAL SURROUND

STEREO

The display will show the selected mode and the active speaker channels.

Midnight mode is useful for watching movies at night at low volumes. It compresses the dynamic range of Dolby Digital (AC-3) soundtracks to make quiet sounds audible and loud sounds less jarring.

1. Select a source with a Dolby Digital signal (e.g., VIDEO2 or VIDEO3 with the input mode set to digital).

2. Press the SOUND key on the front panel several times until “NIGHT” is displayed.

3. Use the MULTI CONTROL knob (or TUNING/SKIP on the remote) to turn the setting “ON” or “OFF”.

The setting is displayed for approximately 8 seconds. Note that some Dolby Digital software may not be compatible with this feature.

You can easily adjust the subwoofer volume using the remote control.

1. Press the SUBWOOFER key on the remote control (RC-R0608). “SW” and the current level will be displayed.

2. Use the VOLUME +/- keys on the remote to adjust the volume. The adjustable range is from -10 dB to +10 dB.

The dimmer function allows you to select the brightness of the receiver’s front panel display. Each time you press the DIMMER key on the front panel, the display brightness will change among the three available settings (bright, medium, dim). Select the brightness level you find most pleasing.

If the unit cannot be operated or shows an erroneous display, you may need to reset the microcomputer. Please note that this will clear all memory contents and return the unit to its factory settings.

For U.S.A. and Canada models:

1. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

2. While holding down the POWER key, plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

For other countries:

1. With the power cord plugged in, turn the POWER key OFF.

2. While holding down the ON/STANDBY key, press the POWER key.

If you are experiencing no sound from the speakers, please check the following:

The speaker cords may be disconnected. Ensure they are properly connected.

The VOLUME is set to the minimum position. Adjust the volume to a proper level.

MUTE is ON. Turn off the MUTE function.

The SPEAKERS switches are set to OFF. Set the SPEAKERS switch(es) to ON.

A blinking standby indicator typically means the speaker cords are short-circuited. Turn the power off, eliminate the short-circuiting (ensure no stray wire strands are touching each other or the receiver’s chassis), and then turn the power on again.

If sound is not being output from your surround and/or center speakers, or the sound is very small, check these points:

The speaker cords may be disconnected. Connect them properly.

A surround mode has not been engaged. Select an appropriate surround mode.

The surround and/or center volume controls are set to the minimum level. Adjust the speaker levels using the test tone feature.

A humming noise on the PHONO input is usually caused by an improper connection from the turntable.

Ensure the audio cord from the turntable is securely connected to the PHONO jacks.

Make sure the turntable’s ground wire is properly connected to the GND terminal on the rear panel of the receiver.

If you are unable to receive radio stations, please check the following possible causes and remedies:

Cause: No antenna is connected. Remedy: Connect an antenna.

Cause: The broadcast band (AM/FM) is not set properly. Remedy: Set the correct broadcast band.

Cause: The frequency of the desired station is not tuned. Remedy: Tune to the correct frequency of the desired station.

If you experience interference, such as static or noise, while listening to the radio, consider the following:

Noise due to ignition from an automobile: Install an outdoor antenna away from the road.

Noise due to interference from another electric appliance: Turn off the power to the interfering appliance.

Noise due to a nearby TV set: Install the receiver farther away from the TV.
