The following accessories are included with your KENWOOD 107VR receiver:

For models with a switchable voltage, you must set the AC voltage selector switch on the rear panel to match the voltage in your area before connecting the power cord. Use a small screwdriver or other pointed tool to move the switch lever to the correct position (AC 110-120V or AC 220-240V).

The unit is designed for operation as follows based on region:

• U.S.A. and Canada: AC 120 V only

• Australia: AC 240 V only

• Europe and U.K.: AC 230 V only

• China and Russia: AC 220 V only

• Other countries: AC 110-120/220-240 V switchable

Note: The warranty does not cover damage caused by excessive line voltage due to improper setting of the AC voltage selector switch.

To connect your components to the KENWOOD 107VR, follow the connections on the rear panel. Do not plug in the power cord until all connections are complete.

• Turntable: Connect to the PHONO input jacks and the GND terminal.

• Multiple CD player: Connect its audio output to the CD input jacks.

• Cassette deck 2: Connect its PLAY/OUT to the TAPE 2 MONITOR IN jacks and its REC/IN to the TAPE 2 MONITOR OUT jacks.

• Video deck 2 or DVD/LD player: Connect its audio output to the VIDEO 2 AUDIO IN jacks and its video output to the VIDEO 2 VIDEO IN jack.

• Video deck 1, cassette deck 1 or MD recorder: Connect its audio output to the VIDEO 1 AUDIO IN jacks and its audio input to the VIDEO 1 AUDIO OUT jacks. Connect its video output to the VIDEO 1 VIDEO IN jack and its video input to the VIDEO 1 VIDEO OUT jack.

• Monitor TV: Connect its video input to the MONITOR TV VIDEO OUT jack.

• Video deck 3 or video camera: Connect its audio output to the front panel AV AUX AUDIO L/R jacks and its video output to the front panel AV AUX VIDEO jack.

• System Control Cord: For compatible KENWOOD components, connect the system control cords between the units to enable system control features. Do not connect a system control cord to a cassette deck connected to the TAPE 2 MONITOR jacks.

The KENWOOD 107VR is compatible with both XS8 and SL16 system control modes and is factory set to the SL16 mode. To switch between modes:

1. Unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet.

2. Set the SYSTEM CONTROL switch on the rear panel to the desired position (XS8 or SL16).

The SL16 mode is for SL16 terminals only. The XS8 mode lets you combine XR, XS, and XS8 terminals. Use the XS8 mode when connecting equipment that is not SL16 compatible.

To connect speakers to your KENWOOD 107VR, use the speaker terminals on the rear panel. To connect a speaker wire, push the lever, insert the bare end of the cord, and then release the lever.

• Speaker system A (Front): Connect your main front speakers (8Ω ~ 16Ω) to the FRONT SPEAKERS A terminals (R and L). These speakers are used for surround sound playback.

• Speaker system B: Connect a second pair of speakers (8Ω ~ 16Ω) to the FRONT SPEAKERS B terminals (R and L). This system does not output sound during surround play.

• Center speaker: Connect a center speaker (8Ω ~ 16Ω) to the CENTER SPEAKER terminals.

• Surround speakers: Connect your surround speakers (4Ω ~ 8Ω) to the SURROUND SPEAKERS terminals (R and L).

• Powered sub-woofer: Connect a powered sub-woofer with a built-in amplifier to the SUB WOOFER PRE OUT jack.

Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and – to -) for all connections. Never short-circuit the + and – speaker cords.

To receive radio broadcasts on your KENWOOD 107VR, connect the appropriate antennas to the terminals on the rear panel.

• AM loop antenna connection: Connect the supplied AM loop antenna to the AM and GND terminals. Position the antenna away from the main unit, TV, and other cords for the best reception.

• FM indoor antenna connection: For temporary use, connect the supplied FM indoor antenna to the FM 75Ω terminal.

• FM outdoor antenna connection: For the best signal reception, connect an FM outdoor antenna with a 75Ω coaxial cable to the FM 75Ω terminal.

• T-shaped indoor antenna (300Ω): If you are using a commercially available T-shaped antenna, connect it to the FM 300Ω terminals.

For models sold outside of the U.S.A. and Canada, the KENWOOD 107VR has an FM DE-EMPHASIS / CHANNEL SPACE switch on the rear panel. If the setting does not match your area, AM/FM reception may be poor. To change the setting:

1. Disconnect the power cord of the amplifier.

2. Set the switch to the correct position based on your region.

3. Connect the power cord again and turn the power on.

Follow these steps to play music on your KENWOOD 107VR:

1. Turn the power ON: Press the POWER key.

2. Select the SPEAKERS key setting: Press the SPEAKERS A and/or B keys to select the desired speaker system. The corresponding indicator will light up.

3. Select the input source: Rotate the INPUT SELECTOR knob to choose your source (TUNER, PHONO, VIDEO1, CD, VIDEO2, AV AUX).

4. Play the selected source: Start playback on your source component.

5. Adjust the volume: Rotate the VOLUME CONTROL knob to increase or decrease the volume.

When a KENWOOD cassette deck or MD recorder is connected in the [SL16] system control mode, the VIDEO 1 input should be switched to the TAPE1 or MD input. To do this:

1. Select VIDEO1 with the INPUT SELECTOR.

2. Press and hold the AUTO key for more than 2 seconds. Each press will cycle through VIDEO1 -> TAPE1 -> MD.

To Adjust the Tone (BASS, MIDDLE, TREBLE):

1. Ensure the SRS 3D and S.DIRECT indicators are not lit. If they are, press the corresponding keys to turn them off.

2. On the remote control, press the SOUND key repeatedly to select the tone mode you want to adjust (BASS, MIDDLE, or TREBLE).

3. Use the LEVEL CONTROL keys on the remote to increase or decrease the level. The level can be adjusted from -8 to +8 in increments of 2.

To Adjust the Left/Right Sound Balance:

1. Ensure the SURROUND, 3 STEREO, and S.DIRECT indicators are off. If they are lit, press the STEREO key to turn them off.

2. On the remote control, press the SETUP key twice.

3. Use the LEVEL CONTROL keys on the remote to adjust the balance between the left and right channels.

4. Press the SETUP key again to return to the previous display.

Source Direct Playback:

This feature allows you to play the source signal with high quality by passing it through the minimum required circuitry. When Source Direct is active, the tone controls (BASS, MIDDLE, TREBLE), balance control, and N.B. are defeated. To use it:

1. Choose the playback source with the INPUT SELECTOR.

2. Press the SOURCE DIRECT key. The S.DIRECT indicator will light up.

3. Play the source.

To cancel, press the SOURCE DIRECT key again.

Compensating for low frequencies (N.B.: Natural Bass circuit):

The N.B. circuit is used to compensate for the low frequencies which are less audible during low-volume listening. To use it:

1. Press the N.B. key. The N.B. indicator will light up.

To cancel, press the N.B. key again. The N.B. control is not effective when S.DIRECT is selected.

To record from a music source like a CD player or tuner to a recorder connected to the VIDEO 1 or TAPE 1 jacks:

1. Select the source to be recorded using the INPUT SELECTOR knob. Select an input source other than TAPE 1.

2. Put your cassette deck or other recording component into record-pause mode.

3. Play the source and start recording on the recorder.

To copy a tape from a deck connected to TAPE 2 to a deck connected to TAPE 1:

1. Press the TAPE 2 MONITOR key. The indicator will light up.

2. Select a source other than TAPE 1 with the INPUT SELECTOR.

3. Play cassette deck 2 and start recording on cassette deck 1.

You can tune to radio stations using several methods on your KENWOOD 107VR.

Automatic or Manual Tuning:

1. Select the TUNER input.

2. Select the broadcast band (FM or AM) by pressing the BAND key.

3. Select the tuning method by pressing the AUTO key. When “AUTO” is lit in the display, it’s in auto tuning. When not lit, it’s in manual tuning.

4. Press the TUNING keys (up or down). In auto tuning, it will automatically find the next station. In manual tuning, press repeatedly or hold to change the frequency.

Direct Frequency Tuning:

1. Select the TUNER input.

2. Select the broadcast band (FM or AM).

3. Press the DIRECT key.

4. Enter the frequency of the desired station using the numeric keys (1 to 0).

Storing Radio Stations in Memory (Station Preset):

1. Tune to the station you wish to store.

2. Press the MEMORY key. The preset number display will blink for about 5 seconds.

3. Within 5 seconds, select a preset number (1 to 30) using the numeric keys. For numbers above 10, use the +10 key (e.g., for 15, press +10 then 5).

4. Repeat for each station you want to store.

Receiving a Preset Station:

• Press the numeric keys corresponding to the desired preset number.

Receiving all Preset Stations in Order (P.CALL):

• On the remote control, press the P.CALL (up or down) keys. Each press will tune to the next station in the preset order. If held, it will cycle through stations successively.

Playback of Videotape:

1. Turn the power of the monitor TV ON.

2. On the KENWOOD 107VR, select the VIDEO1, VIDEO2, or AV AUX input, depending on where your video deck is connected.

3. Play the video deck.

Recording of Video Source (from VIDEO 2/AV AUX to VIDEO 1):

1. Connect the video source component to be played (e.g., another VCR, camera) to the VIDEO 2 or AV AUX inputs.

2. On the KENWOOD 107VR, select the VIDEO2 or AV AUX input.

3. Play the source component.

4. Start recording on the recording video deck which is connected to the VIDEO 1 jacks.

The KENWOOD 107VR offers several surround modes to enhance your listening experience:

• DOLBY PRO LOGIC: For video software with the DOLBY SURROUND mark. It uses front, center, and surround speakers to reproduce the sound field of movie theaters.

• DOLBY 3 STEREO: For video software with the DOLBY SURROUND mark, but uses only front and center speakers to improve the positioning of the center acoustic image.

• DSP LOGIC: Adds reverberation effects to Dolby Pro Logic signals to simulate a LARGE or SMALL movie theater. Requires front, center, and surround speakers.

• DSP presence: Adds reverberation to music sources to simulate live atmospheres like an ARENA, JAZZ CLUB, or STADIUM. Requires surround speakers.

• SRS 3D Stereo: Simulates a 3-dimensional sound space from a conventional 2-channel stereo source, improving depth and sound field extension.

To optimize the surround sound for your room, follow these adjustment steps for DOLBY PRO LOGIC or DOLBY 3 STEREO modes. Use the remote control for these settings.

1. Select DOLBY PRO LOGIC surround mode: Press the DOLBY PRO LOGIC key on the main unit or the LISTEN MODE key on the remote until “PROLOGIC” is displayed.

2. Select the CENTER MODE: Press the CENTER MODE key on the remote to choose based on your center speaker:

• NORMAL: For a compact center speaker.

• WIDEBAND: For a large center speaker.

• PHANTOM: When no center speaker is used.

3. Set the sub-woofer: Press the SETUP key. Set the sub-woofer to ON or OFF using the LEVEL CONTROL keys.

4. Adjust speaker volume levels: After the sub-woofer setting, the unit enters test tone mode (“TEST L” is displayed). A noise-like tone will move across the speakers. While the tone is output from a speaker (Center, Surround, Sub-woofer), use the LEVEL CONTROL keys to adjust its volume to match the front speakers.

5. Adjust the delay time: After setting levels, the unit enters delay time adjustment. Use the LEVEL CONTROL keys to set the delay time (15, 20, 25, or 30 ms) based on your speaker distances. Proper delay time can be calculated as Delay Time = 20 + 3 x (A – B), where A is the distance from the front speakers and B is the distance from the surround speakers.

Press SETUP to confirm each step and move to the next. The settings are held in memory.

To adjust the delay time for DSP presence and DSP LOGIC modes on your KENWOOD 107VR:

1. Select “DSP” or “DSP LOGIC” using the LISTEN MODE key on the remote control.

2. Press the SETUP key repeatedly until “DELAY” is displayed.

3. Use the LEVEL CONTROL keys to increase or decrease the delay time. The available settings are 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, or 50 ms.

Select the value closest to the delay time calculated for your listening room.

To use and adjust the SRS (Sound Retrieval System) 3D Stereo effect:

1. Ensure the S.DIRECT indicator is not lit. If it is, press the S.DIRECT key to turn it off.

2. Press the SRS 3D key on the main unit to turn the SRS 3D stereo ON. The SRS 3D indicator will light up.

3. To adjust the effect strength, press the SOUND key on the remote control to select either “CENTER” or “SPACE”.

• CENTER: Adjusts the depth of the SRS 3D effect. Increasing the level enhances the feeling of depth around the center.

• SPACE: Adjusts the expansion of the SRS 3D effect. Increasing the level makes the sound expansion wider.

4. Use the LEVEL CONTROL keys on the remote to adjust the selected level from 1 to 7.

Note: BASS, MIDDLE, and TREBLE adjustments are not available while SRS 3D Stereo is ON.

If the KENWOOD 107VR is malfunctioning (e.g., impossible to operate, erroneous display), you can reset the microcomputer. Please note that resetting clears all stored contents (like preset stations) and returns the unit to its factory condition.

1. Unplug the AC power plug from the wall outlet.

2. While holding the POWER switch on the main unit depressed, plug the AC plug back into the power outlet.

If you have no sound or the volume is low, check the following:

• Speaker Cords: Ensure they are properly and securely connected.

• MUTE Function: If the MUTE ON indicator is blinking, press the MUTE key on the remote to turn it off.

• Speaker Selection: Press the SPEAKERS A or B keys to ensure your speakers are selected and the indicator is ON.

• TAPE 2 MONITOR: Make sure the TAPE 2 MONITOR key is set to OFF.

A blinking STANDBY indicator means the protection circuit has been activated, likely due to short-circuited speaker cords. Turn the power off, check all speaker wiring at the receiver and speaker ends to eliminate any short-circuits (e.g., stray wire strands touching), and then turn the power on again.

If sound is only coming from one speaker, check these two things:

• Speaker Cord: Ensure the speaker cord for the silent speaker is properly connected.

• BALANCE Control: Check that the BALANCE control is not set to an extreme left or right position. Adjust it back to the center.

If you are not getting sound from your surround or center speakers, or the sound is very small, please check the following:

• Speaker Cords: Ensure the surround and/or center speaker cords are connected correctly.

• Surround Mode: Make sure a surround play mode (like DOLBY PRO LOGIC or DSP) has been engaged.

• Speaker Levels: Check that the surround and center speaker levels are not set to the minimum positions in the surround setup menu. Adjust them as needed.

If you cannot receive radio stations, try these solutions:

• Antenna: Make sure an antenna (AM or FM) is connected.

• Broadcast Band: Ensure you have selected the correct broadcast band (AM or FM).

• Tuning: Make sure you have tuned to the frequency of the desired station.

If the remote control is not operating, check these possible causes:

• Batteries: The batteries may be exhausted. Replace them with new ones.

• Range/Obstacle: You may be too far away from the main unit, at too wide an angle, or there might be an obstacle between the remote and the receiver’s sensor.

• System Control Cords: If you are trying to control other KENWOOD components, ensure the audio and system control cords are connected properly.

• Component Status: The source component you are trying to operate might not contain a tape or CD, or you may be trying to play a tape while it is recording.

The KENWOOD 107VR has a memory backup function that retains settings for approximately three days if the power cord is disconnected or the main power is off. If power is lost for longer than this period, the following items will be deleted or reset:

• The power setting is cleared and the power is set to OFF.

• The input selection is cleared and the TUNER input is selected.

• The volume setting is cleared and the volume is set to -80 dB.

• The receiving band setting is cleared and the FM band is selected.

• The frequency setting is cleared and 87.5 MHz is selected.

• The preset station memory is cleared.
