How do I check if the anti-tip bracket is installed correctly?
Use both arms and grasp the rear edge of the range back. Carefully attempt to tilt the range forward. When properly installed, the range should not tilt forward. Refer to the anti-tip bracket installation instructions supplied with your range for proper installation. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or serious burns to children and adults.
What should I do if there is a power failure?
Do not attempt to operate the range during a power failure. If the power fails, always turn off the range. If the range is not turned off and the power resumes, the range will begin to operate again. Once the power resumes, reset the clock and oven function.
How should I place and move oven racks?
Always place oven racks in the desired location while the oven is cool. If a rack must be moved while the oven is hot, use extreme caution. Use potholders and grasp the rack with both hands to reposition. Do not let potholders contact the hot heating elements in the oven. Remove all utensils from the rack before moving.
Should I use the broiler pan insert?
Yes, do not use the broiler pan without its insert. The broiler pan and its insert allow dripping fat to drain and be kept away from the high heat of the broiler. Do not cover the broiler insert with aluminum foil, as exposed fat and grease could ignite.
What are the guidelines for using cookware on the coil cooktop?
- Know which knob controls each surface heating unit. Place a pan of food on the surface element unit before turning it on, and turn the element off before removing the pan.
- Use proper pan size. Select utensils having flat bottoms large enough to cover the surface unit heating element. Undersized utensils expose the heating element and may ignite clothing.
- Turn utensil handles inward and not extending over adjacent surface elements to reduce risks of burns, ignition, and spillage.
- Never leave surface elements unattended at high heat settings. Boilovers cause smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite, or a dry pan may melt.
- Only certain types of glass, glass/ceramic, ceramic, earthenware, or other glazed utensils are suitable for cooktop service without breaking due to sudden temperature change. Check manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Do not use aluminum foil to line surface unit drip bowls or reflector pans.
- Make sure reflector pans or drip bowls are in place. Absence may subject wiring or components underneath to damage.
- Carefully check reflector pans, drip bowls, and coils for packaging material before use.
- Do not use decorative surface burner covers. If an element is turned on, the cover will get hot, possibly melt, and cause burns.
- Do not allow grease to accumulate around surface burners and drip bowls.
- Do not immerse or soak removable heating elements. They clean themselves during normal operation.
Where is the serial plate located?
To locate the serial plate, open the storage drawer. The serial plate is attached to the lower right oven frame. Record your Model No. (790.), Serial No., and Date of Purchase for future reference.
Where is the oven vent located?
The oven vent is located under the left rear surface element. When the oven is on, warm air passes through this vent. This venting is necessary for proper air circulation and good baking results. Do not block the oven vent.
How do I remove, replace, and arrange oven racks?
CAUTION: Always use pot holders or oven mitts when using the oven, as components become very hot.
- Arranging: Always arrange oven racks when the oven is cool.
- To remove: Pull the rack forward until it stops. Lift up the front of the rack and slide it out.
- To replace: Fit the rack onto the guides on the oven walls. Tilt the front of the rack upward and slide the rack back into place.
Ensure proper air circulation by allowing 2-4″ (5-10 cm) around cookware. Do not let pans touch each other, the oven door, sides, or back.
What are the recommended oven rack positions for different food types?
Referencing the rack positions numbered 1 (bottom) to 5 (top):
| Food type |
Position |
| Broiling |
See broil instructions (typically 4th or 5th) |
| Cookies, cakes, pies, biscuits & muffins |
2 or 3 |
| Frozen pies, angel food cake, yeast, bread and casseroles |
1 or 2 |
| Small cuts of meat or poultry |
1 or 2 |
| Turkey, roast or ham |
1 |
Note: An offset oven rack (on some models) places the base about 1/2 position lower than a flat rack.
What should I know about the surface elements and indicator lights?
The element temperature rises gradually and evenly, glowing red as it heats. For efficiency, turn OFF the element just before cooking is complete to use residual heat.
CAUTION: Surface elements may still be hot after being turned off. Do not touch until cooled. Do not place plastic items (salt/pepper shakers, spoon holders, wrappings) on the cooktop when in use; they could melt or ignite. Potholders, towels, or wooden spoons placed too close can catch fire. Do not use aluminum foil to line drip bowls or place foil/meltable material on elements. Ensure reflector pans/drip bowls are in place.
The ELEMENT ON indicator light(s) on the control panel glow when a surface element is ON. Check these lights after cooking to ensure all controls are OFF.
How do I choose and use proper cookware for the surface elements?
Cookware size and type affect the power level needed. Follow these recommendations:
- Use cookware with flat bottoms that make good contact with the entire heating element. Check flatness by rotating a ruler across the bottom. Avoid curved or warped pans.
- Use pans with straight sides and tight-fitting lids.
- Ensure the pan is well-balanced and the handle weight doesn’t tilt it. Avoid heavy handles that cause tilting.
- Match pan size to the amount of food and the surface element size. Avoid pans significantly smaller or larger (more than 1/2 inch or 12mm overhang) than the element.
- Use material that conducts heat well.
- Ensure cookware is easy to clean.
- Always match pot diameter to the surface element size.
What are the characteristics of different cookware materials?
- Aluminum: Excellent heat conductor. Some foods darken it (Anodized aluminum resists staining/pitting).
- Copper: Excellent heat conductor but discolors easily.
- Stainless Steel: Slow heat conductor, uneven cooking results. Durable, easy to clean, resists staining.
- Cast Iron: Slow heat conductor, retains heat well. Cooks evenly once at temperature.
- Porcelain-enamel on metal: Heating varies depending on base material.
- Glass: Slow heat conductor.
What are the guidelines for home canning on this appliance?
Read and observe the following for home canning. Check USDA guidelines and follow their recommendations.
- Use only quality flat-bottom canners. Check bottom flatness with a straight-edge.
- (For ceramic cooktops) Use only a completely flat bottom canner with no ridges radiating from the center.
- Ensure canner diameter does not exceed 1 inch beyond the surface element markings or burner. Smaller diameter canners are recommended on electric coil and ceramic glass cooktops.
- Start with hot tap water to boil water more quickly.
- Use the highest heat setting initially to bring water to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to the lowest possible setting to maintain the boil.
- NEVER place or straddle a cooking utensil over 2 different surface cooking areas simultaneously. This causes uneven heating and may damage ceramic cooktops.
What are the suggested settings for the surface elements?
These settings are based on medium-weight aluminum pans with lids. Adjust as needed for other pans.

How do I replace the lift-off oven door?
1. Firmly grasp both sides of the oven door along the sides (do not use the handle).
2. Hold the door at the same angle as the removal position. Seat the hook of each hinge arm over the roller pins on each side of the oven door frame. The hook must be fully seated on the pins.
3. Fully open the oven door (horizontal with floor).
4. Push the door hinge locks up towards and into the oven frame on both hinges to the locked position.
5. Close the oven door.
What care should be taken with the oven door glass?
Most oven doors contain glass that can break. Follow these recommendations:
- Do not close the oven door until all oven racks are fully in place.
- Do not hit the glass with pots, pans, or any other object.
- Scratching, hitting, jarring, or stressing the glass may weaken its structure, increasing the risk of breakage later.
What should I check if I’m experiencing poor baking results?
Many factors affect baking. Ensure the proper oven rack position is used. Center food in the oven and space pans for air circulation. Allow the oven to preheat fully before placing food inside. Try adjusting the recipe’s recommended temperature or time. If you feel the oven is too hot or cool, see “How do I adjust the oven temperature calibration?”.
What should I do if the appliance is not level?
- Ensure the floor is level, strong, and stable enough to support the range. If sagging or sloping, contact a carpenter.
- Check for poor installation. Place an oven rack in the center of the oven. Place a level on the rack. Adjust the leveling legs at the base of the appliance until the rack is level.
- Kitchen cabinet alignment might make the range appear unlevel. Ensure cabinets are square and have sufficient room for appliance clearance.
Why can’t I move the appliance easily? (Appliance must be accessible for service)
- Cabinets might not be square or are built too tightly. Contact the builder or installer to make the appliance accessible.
- Carpet might interfere with movement. Ensure sufficient space so the appliance can be lifted over the carpet.
What should I check if the entire appliance does not operate?
- Make sure the power cord is plugged properly into the outlet.
- Check for an electrical power outage. See if house lights are on. Call your local electric company if necessary.
- Service wiring may not be complete. Call Sears Service for assistance (See back cover of PDF).
What should I check if the oven portion of the appliance does not operate?
- The time of day must be set first to operate the oven. See “How do I set the clock?”.
- Ensure oven controls are set properly for the desired function (e.g., Bake, Broil). Review the Setting Oven Controls section.
- Check if the entire appliance operates (see previous question).
What if a surface element is too hot or not hot enough?
The surface control setting might be incorrect. Adjust the power level setting (control knob).
What if a surface element does not heat or does not heat evenly?
- Ensure the correct surface control knob is turned ON for the element needed.
- Lightweight or warped pans are being used. Use only flat, evenly balanced, medium or heavyweight cookware. Flat pans heat better and more evenly than warped pans. Heavy & medium-weight pans heat evenly. Lightweight pans heat unevenly and food may burn easily.
What should I do if the oven light does not work?
Ensure the oven light bulb is secure in its socket. See “How do I replace the oven light bulb?”.
Why does the oven smoke excessively when broiling?
- Incorrect setting. Follow broiling instructions in the Setting Oven Controls section.
- Ensure the oven door is opened to the broil stop position when broiling.
- Meat is too close to the broil element. Reposition the broil rack for proper clearance. Preheat the broil element for searing.
- Meat was not properly prepared. Remove excess fat. Cut remaining fatty edges to prevent curling (do not cut into lean).
- Grease has built up on oven surfaces. Clean regularly, especially when broiling frequently. Old grease or food spatters cause excessive smoking.
What causes flames inside the oven or smoking from the oven vent?
Excessive spillovers in the oven (e.g., pie spillovers, large amounts of grease left on the oven bottom). Wipe up excessive spillovers before starting the oven. If flames or excessive smoke are present, refer to the Broil instructions in the Setting Oven Controls section regarding oven fires.
What should I do if the oven control panel beeps and displays an “F” code error?
The oven control has detected a fault.
1. Press the STOP key pad to clear the error code.
2. Try the Bake or Broil function again.
3. If the F code error repeats, remove power from the appliance (unplug or turn off breaker). Wait 5 minutes.
4. Repower the appliance and set the clock with the correct time of day.
5. Try the Bake or Broil function again.
6. If the fault recurs, press the STOP key pad to clear and call Sears Service for assistance (See back cover of PDF).
Why are the drip bowls pitting or rusting?
- Foods with acids (like tomatoes), if allowed to stand in/on bowls, will cause corrosion. Remove and wash drip bowls as soon as possible after a spillover.
- Normal environment in coastal areas can expose bowls to high salt content in the air. Protect bowls as much as possible from direct exposure to air with high salt content.
Why are the drip bowls turning color or distorted?
The bottom surface of cookware extends beyond the surface element and touches the cooktop surface. This can cause high enough temperatures to discolor or distort the drip bowls. DO NOT use cookware of this type. Pan sizes should be matched to the size of the element. Replacement drip bowls may be purchased from your appliance dealer.
