Insert the plug into the corresponding grounded outlet.
What is the Monolith designed for?
Monolith is a single dosing grinder, meaning that you only grind a premeasured amount of coffee to minimize waste and stale coffee.
What tools ship with the Monolith?
The Monolith ships with a WDT (stirring, ground coffee distribution tool) tool and a small glass water spray bottle to mist beans before grinding with water to reduce static electricity and retention in the grinder.
How do I make espresso with Monolith?
- Measure coffee beans in a suitable container on a scale, using 18g (grinder as shipped is in espresso range at 18g dose). Optionally, mist the beans with one spray from the water spray bottle included.
- Lift the top-cap and pour the beans into the bean funnel, then place the top-cap back on.
- Place your portafilter with basket and optional stray grinds containment funnel onto the portafilter fork. Ensure that your portafilter forks are adjusted so there is some friction when the portafilter is inserted to ensure that the portafilter does not wiggle out due to grinding vibration.
- Ensure that the grinder main power switch is on, and the motor On/Off switch has a green light on.
- Press the motor On/Off switch to start the grinder.
- When all coffee is ground and stops coming out of the exit chute, press the PURGE button and keep it pressed for a couple of seconds. The Purge button bumps up the motor speed to the maximum RPM while it’s being pressed. After you release the Purge button, press the On/Off switch to turn off the grinder. Detach the magnetic exit chute and tap it with one finger into the basket to release any coffee that was stuck to the walls due to static electricity.
- Place the exit chute back onto the grinder.
- Using the included WDT tool, stir ground coffee in the basket.
- Tamp coffee using a KafaTek tamper and pull your shot.
What should I do if a bean lodges itself into the burrs?
Loosen the Adjustment Lock and pulse the grinder on and off to unlock the burr, then tighten the Adjustment Lock. If this occurs again, it’s recommended to start the grinder before pouring beans into the bean funnel or lower the grinder speed to give the motor more power, then pour beans and immediately place the Top Cap back on.
How do I adjust grind fineness?
Turn the Bean Funnel clockwise to make the grind finer and counter-clockwise to make the grind coarser. Moving the red triangle mark on the Bean Funnel towards the small bean on the left-hand side will grind finer, and moving it to the right-hand side will grind coarser.
What should I do if I cannot turn the funnel back to a finer position after coarse grinding?
Run the motor of the grinder while you adjust toward the finer side. This will allow the burrs to grind any particles left which were preventing them from closing the gap.
How do I change the motor speed?
Turn the wheel on the side of the grinder while watching the display, which shows the motor speed. The display will blink to indicate that a non-default speed is used. To save the indicated speed as the default speed, simply push the wheel, and the display will stop blinking to indicate that the speed was saved as the default speed.
How do I adjust the portafilter fork height?
- Turn off the grinder power using the Main Power Switch.
- Unplug the grinder power cord from the back of the grinder base.
- Locate the socket head screws on the back of the side arms.
- Loosen the screws slowly using a hex wrench.
- Once they are loosened, you can move the Portafilter forks up and down.
- If you need to adjust the space between forks, that can be done using a Philips screwdriver from the front.
- Once done, fasten the socket screws. Finger tight is enough; there is no need to overtighten.
How often should I clean the grinder?
Cleaning the grinder is not recommended often, maybe once or at most twice a year.
How do I clean the grinder?
- Turn off the power using the Main Power switch on the back and unplug the grinder power cord from the back of the grinder base.
- Unscrew the machine screws on the top plate using a 5mm hex key, taking care not to damage the finish. You need to unscrew the top bolts on top for Monolith Flat and a total of 4 bolts on Monolith MAX, 2 on top and 2 on the bottom.
- While holding the bean funnel, wiggle up the top plate and funnel. If it appears that you cannot get them off, slightly loosen the 4 machine screws on the side arms and try wiggling out the top plate then.
- With the top plate off, lift the upper burr carrier and brush out the ground coffee inside and from the burrs surfaces. It is recommended to vacuum everything well to get all ground coffee out.
- Make sure that all surfaces are clean from coffee.
- Ensure that the top plate, bottom of funnel, top of the upper burr carrier, and plastic gasket are all clean and without any coffee grounds.
- Make sure that the 2 alignment pins which align the top plate and burr chamber are in place.
- Ensure that the grind chamber mating top is clean and without any coffee grounds.
- Tip the grinder backward so the top is flat, which allows you to simply place the plastic gasket on the upper burr carrier so it stays put. You can place a book or suitable object under the front side of the grinder to tip it back.
- Attach the top plate back until it’s completely mated to the grind chamber and fasten the top machine screws. There must not be any space between the top plate and grind chamber. Also, make sure that you install the plastic gasket, which goes between the funnel and the upper burr carrier, and that this gasket is not folded or kinked.
- Optionally, if you have loosened the side arms screws, fasten them as well.
How do I change the burrs?
- Turn off the grinder using the Main Power Switch and unplug the grinder power cord from the back of the grinder base.
- Detach the top plate and funnel using the procedure described under the Cleaning The Grinder section.
- Vacuum and brush inside of the burr chamber to get most of the coffee out.
- With the top plate off, you have access to the upper and lower burrs. Use a flat head screwdriver to loosen the burr screws and take off and replace the burrs. Later versions of Monolith use socket cap bolts which need a 2.5mm hex key for Flat and 4mm hex key for MAX. Make sure that the hex holes on the bolts are absolutely clean and without coffee. If you do not see shiny metal inside of the hex sides and bottom, it’s not clean, and you are risking stripping the bolts once you try to unscrew them. You can use a metal pick or needle to loosen coffee inside of the hex holes, then you can vacuum or blow them out. Bolts are tightened to 2.5Nm torque.
- If there is radial play (side to side) when you install the burrs onto their carriers, you can use shims at 3 points around the burr for the top burr and inside of the burr for the bottom burr to center the burr while you tighten the bolts. Once the bolts are tight, shims are removed. Metal foil and even paper can be used as shims.
- Follow the steps under Cleaning the Grinder to install the top plate back on.
How do I replace the Fast-Blow Fuse?
- Unplug the grinder power cord from the back of the grinder.
- Pull out the fuse drawer just under the power cord inlet.
- Once you pull out the drawer, you will see the main fuse and backup fuse.
- Carefully replace the fuses, as they are fragile and might break if you put too much force on them. Wear gloves and be careful. They are easiest to push out gently from the bottom, but you can also gently press them on the side from the top to tilt them and pull them out.
- Close the drawer and plug in the power; the Monolith is ready to go.
How do I detach the mounting side-arms, remove the DC speed controller, and detach the grinder body?
- Unplug the grinder from AC power and wait for at least 10 minutes to let capacitors drain.
- Remove the 6 screws on the grinder sides (3 per side) which hold the top and bottom part of the grinder base using a Phillips head screwdriver.
- Place the grinder on its side on top of a soft towel, with the DC speed controller facing up.
- Detach the bottom side from the top side of the base very carefully so as not to rip out the wires which connect the bottom and top parts. There is just enough slack to be able to do so and keep the bottom of the base on the side. The base might be harder to pray apart, and it’s easier to work from the back of the base to open it.
- With the bottom of the base on the side, disconnect all connectors from the DC controller: 2 DC Motor connections, one AC power connection, and one connector which goes to the switch on the front. You will need a right-angle Philips screwdriver/wrench to be able to undo the ground wire screw that is attached to the DC controller. Alternatively, leave that on for now and, after step 6 is complete, pull the DC controller out just enough to gain access to this ground screw.
- Take off the DC controller front plate by grabbing it on the side where finger indents are and pulling it off.
- Remove the 2 screws that hold the DC controller to the base using a Phillips screwdriver. They have nuts on the other side which you might need to hold to undo the screws.
- At this point, you can pull out the DC controller if you have removed the ground wire connection from step #4. If not, you can now gain enough space to remove the ground wire screw.
- Use a 5mm hex key wrench to remove the machine screws which attach the side arms to the grinder body and place the grinder body on the side. Watch out so you don’t scratch the base or grinder body.
- At this point, you can remove the horizontal bar which holds the Portafilter forks as well.
- Remove the screws which attach side arms to the grinder base using a Phillips head screwdriver. They are located under the DC controller you removed.
- Reverse the process to put the grinder back together. Be gentle when putting the base back together since it’s a tight fit and might need some gentle tapping to get in place.
How do I change the motor?
- Disconnect the motor cable that you connected to the motor when you received the grinder. Flip the white clip carefully back, then you can pull the connector off of the motor.
- Remove 2 side arm bolts on the LEFT side of the grinder when you look at it from the front. These fasten the side arm to the grinder body.
- Place a towel on the table and then lay the grinder on its left side.
- Remove 2 side arm bolts from the right side which is now facing up. When you are removing the second bolt, make sure to support the grinder body motor to avoid any scratching damage. A towel between the motor/grinder body assembly could serve that purpose.
- With bolts removed, carefully slide the motor/body assembly back. Make sure that you move it parallel to the side arms so you don’t scratch the parts.
- With the grinder body/motor removed, set this assembly so the exit chute is facing up and the body/motor assembly is now horizontal. Remove 4 M8 bolts that secure the motor to the body.
- Pull the motor off the body of the grinder. It might need some wiggling.
- Notice there is a drive key inside of the grinder shaft. This key must be put into its slot before the new motor is installed. You can rotate the shaft by hand so the drive key slot is facing down. Insert the key and slide the motor on. Reverse these steps to reassemble the grinder.
How do I reset alarms?
- Pull the motor driver side panel using the finger grips on top and bottom and then pulling it off.
- Notice the location of the F (function button).
- Notice the Operation Switch.
- Make sure to use the Operation Switch and return it back to RUN mode.
- TURN OFF the grinder power switch and keep it OFF for 1 minute or longer, then TURN ON.
