DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN OR UNTRAINED INDIVIDUALS TO USE THIS UNIT.

Use the JOHN DEERE S1400 UT20810 trimmer for cutting weeds and grass only. Do not use for any other purpose.

Never start or run the engine inside a closed area; breathing exhaust fumes can kill.

Clear the work area before each use. Remove all objects such as rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, or string which can be thrown or become entangled in the stringhead.

PRODUCT USERS ON UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE LAND, AND IN SOME STATES, MUST COMPLY WITH FIRE PREVENTION REGULATIONS. THIS PRODUCT IS EQUIPPED WITH A SPARK ARRESTOR; HOWEVER, OTHER USER REQUIREMENTS MAY APPLY. CHECK WITH YOUR FEDERAL, STATE, OR LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

WEAR FULL EYE AND HEARING PROTECTION WHILE OPERATING THIS TRIMMER.

Wear heavy long pants, shoes, and gloves.

Keep all bystanders, children, and pets at least 50 feet (15m) away.

Do not wear loose clothing, or jewelry.

Secure long hair so it is above the shoulder.

Do not operate this trimmer when you are tired, ill, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.

Do not operate in poor lighting.

Keep firm footing and balance. Do not overreach.

Keep all parts of your body away from the string head and hot surfaces. Keep stringhead below waist level.

ALWAYS STOP ENGINE AND REMOVE SPARK PLUG WIRE BEFORE MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS OR REPAIRS EXCEPT CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS.

1. Place front handle (D) and handle bracket (E) on driveshaft housing as shown in illustration.

2. Install the two screws (F) and two nuts (G), but do not tighten completely.

3. Adjust the position of the front handle for best balance and comfort, then tighten the two screws (F) securely.

If your unit has been preassembled, check each step to insure the unit has been properly assembled.

1. Place slot (H) in grass deflector (I) over the square tab (J) of mounting bracket.

2. Rotate the grass deflector around the driveshaft housing. Align the screw hole (K) in the mounting bracket with the screw hole (L) in the grass deflector.

3. Insert screw (M) through the mounting bracket and into the grass deflector and tighten securely.

The lower unit connects to the power unit by means of the driveshaft coupler device attached to the power unit driveshaft tube.

1. First, loosen the knob (N) on the coupler (O) attached to the upper tube.

2. To attach upper tube to lower tube, push in the button (P) located on the lower tube. Align the button with the indention (Q) on the upper tube and slide the two tubes together. Rotate lower tube until button locks into the correct positioning hole for your application.

Positioning Hole (A) & (B) should cover most of the attachments being used.

Positioning Hole (C) should only be used for non-cutting attachments, such as a blower or vacuum attachment. DO NOT USE positioning hole (C) when edging, trimming or brush cutting.

NOTE: If the button does not release completely in the positioning hole, the tubes are not locked into place. Slightly rotate from side to side until the button is locked into place.

3. Be certain the knob is fully tightened before operating equipment; it should be checked periodically for tightness during use.

4. For changing lower units or breaking down for storage:

Loosen the knob.

Push in the button and twist the tubes to remove and separate ends.

Always shut off engine before fueling.

Never add fuel to a machine with a running or hot engine. Move at least 10 feet (3m) from refueling site before starting engine. DO NOT SMOKE!

Refer to the Safety-Refueling Section for additional Safety Precautions.

1. Clean surface around fuel cap to prevent contamination.

2. Loosen fuel cap slowly.

3. Carefully pour fuel mixture into the tank. Avoid spillage.

4. Prior to replacing the fuel cap, clean and inspect the gasket.

5. Immediately replace fuel cap and hand tighten. Wipe up any fuel spillage.

6. It is normal for smoke to be emitted from a new engine during and after first use.

The fuel mixture for the JOHN DEERE S1400 UT20810 is Premium Exact Mix™ (50:1).

If JOHN DEERE Premium Exact Mix™ oil is not available, use a high quality 2-cycle engine oil, mixed at 2.6 oz. per gallon (US).

DO NOT USE AUTOMOTIVE OIL OR 2-CYCLE OUTBOARD OIL.

NOTE: Premium Exact Mix™ fuel mix contains a fuel stabilizer and will stay fresh up to 30 days. DO NOT mix quantities larger than usable in a 30 day period.

1. Lay trimmer on a flat, bare surface.

2. Push primer bulb (A) 8 to 10 times.

NOTE: DO NOT SQUEEZE THROTTLE TRIGGER BEFORE ENGINE STARTS. SQUEEZING THE THROTTLE TRIGGER AT THIS TIME WILL PREVENT THE UNIT FROM STARTING.

3. Move lever (B) to “COLD START” position.

4. Pull starter rope until engine runs.

5. Allow engine to warm up for 4-10 seconds.

6. Depress interlock (C) then squeeze and release the throttle trigger (D). This allows the choke to automatically set to the “WARM START” position. Your unit is now ready for use.

NOTE: The choke lever will automatically set to the “WARM START” position after the throttle trigger is squeezed for the first time.

1. Lay trimmer on a flat, bare surface.

2. Choke lever should already be in the “WARM START” position. If not, squeeze and release throttle trigger. Pull the starter rope until unit runs.

Depress switch (E) at the “STOP” (STOP) position.

String advance is controlled by tapping stringhead on grass while running engine at full throttle.

NOTE: This trimmer is equipped with a cut-off blade on the grass deflector. For best cutting, advance string until it is trimmed to length by the cut-off blade. Advance string whenever you hear the engine running faster than normal. This will maintain best performance and keep string long enough to advance properly.

If the string is worn too short you may not be able to advance the string by tapping. If so, STOP THE ENGINE, and manually advance per instructions on page 11, item 7.

Keep the trimmer tilted toward the area being cut. See illustration for best cutting area (A). Do not cut in dangerous cutting area (B).

Use the tip of string to do the cutting – do not force stringhead into uncut grass. Wire and picket fences cause extra string wear, even breakage.

Stone and brick walls, curbs, and wood may wear string rapidly.

Walk around trees and shrubs. Tree bark, wood moldings, siding, and fence posts can easily be damaged by the string.

1. Check spark. Remove spark plug. Reattach the spark plug cap and lay spark plug on metal cylinder. Pull the starter rope and watch for spark at spark plug tip. If there is no spark, repeat test with a new spark plug.

2. Push primer bulb until bulb is full of fuel. If bulb does not fill, primary fuel delivery system is blocked. Contact a servicing dealer. If primer bulb fills, engine may be flooded (see next item).

3. Remove spark plug, turn trimmer so spark plug hole is aimed at the ground. Make sure lever is in the “WARM START” position and pull starter cord 10 to 14 times. This will clear excess fuel from engine. Clean and reinstall spark plug. With the throttle trigger fully depressed, pull starter cord three times with lever at “WARM START” position. If engine does not start, move choke lever to “COLD START” and follow normal starting instructions in “STARTING AND STOPPING” section. If engine still fails to start, repeat procedure with a new spark plug.

4. Contact a servicing dealer.

Release throttle trigger, see starting instructions in “STARTING AND STOPPING” section.

Carburetor requires adjustment. Turn “L” needle (A) counterclockwise 1/16 turn. If “L” needle (A) can not be turned counterclockwise, do not force plastic limiter caps. Contact a servicing dealer.

1. Check oil fuel mixture. Use fresh fuel and the correct 2-cycle oil mix.

2. Air filter dirty. Clean per instructions in Maintenance Section.

3. Carburetor requires adjustment. Turn “H” needle (B) clockwise 1/16 turn.

4. Spark Arrestor Screen Dirty. Contact a servicing dealer.

Carburetor requires adjustment. Turn idle speed screw (C) clockwise to increase idle speed.

1. String welded to itself. Lubricate with silicone spray.

2. Not enough string on spool. Install more string (See String Replacement).

3. String worn too short. Pull strings while alternately pressing down on and releasing spool retainer.

4. String tangled on spool. Remove string from spool and rewind (See String Replacement).

5. Engine speed too slow. Advance string at full throttle.

Screw threads dirty or damaged. Clean threads and lubricate with grease if no improvement, replace spool retainer.

1. Cutting tall grass at ground level. Cut tall grass from the top down to prevent wrapping.

2. Operating trimmer at part throttle. Operate trimmer at full throttle.

(New prewound spool – For string replacement proceed to the next section.)

Use only .095″ (2.4mm) diameter monofilament string. Use John Deere replacement string for best performance.

1. Stop engine. Hold string head and unscrew spool retainer (A). Turn clockwise.

2. Remove empty spool from stringhead. Keep spring (B) attached to spool.

3. To install new spool, make sure that the two strings are captured in the slots (C) opposite each other on the new spool. Extend end of string approximately 6 inches (152mm) beyond the slots.

4. Thread the strings into the eyelets (D) in the stringhead (E). Carefully push the spool into the stringhead (gently pull the strings to the outside if necessary). When the spool is in the stringhead, grasp the strings and pull sharply to release them from the slots in the spool.

5. Push down and turn the spool counterclockwise until it no longer turns. Hold spool down and rotate clockwise a small amount. Release the spool. The spool should be locked down in the stringhead. If not, hold down and rotate until locked.

6. Make sure string head and spool retainer are installed on drive shaft (F) by turning the retainer counterclockwise to tighten.

7. Pull the strings again to rotate the spool into cutting position. Push the spool retainer down while pulling on string(s) to manually advance string and to check for proper assembly of the string head.

1. Stop engine. Hold string head and unscrew spool retainer. Turn clockwise.

2. Remove spool from stringhead (Note: Keep spring (B) attached to spool). Remove any old string remaining on spool.

3. Insert one 9 foot (2.7m) long string into anchor hole (G) in spool as shown. Wind string #1, in upper space counterclockwise as shown by the arrows on the flange (H) and place string end in slot (I) on upper spool flange Extend string 6 inches (152mm) beyond slot. After winding, there should be at least 1/4″ (6mm) between the wound string and the outside edge of the spool. DO NOT OVERFILL.

4. Repeat step 3 with #2 string and again DO NOT OVERFILL.

5. Replace the spool and spool retainer. See the Spool Replacement Section for detailed instructions.

For proper performance and long life, keep air filter clean.

1. Remove the air filter cover (J) by pushing down on the latch with your thumb while gently pulling on the cover (see illustration).

2. Remove the filter (K), clean it in warm soapy water. Rinse and let dry completely. For best performance, replace annually.

3. Install filter, align tabs, push in, and make sure that the latches are locked into place.

1. Drain all fuel from tank into a container approved for gasoline. Run engine until it stops.

2. Clean all foreign material from the trimmer. Store it in a well-ventilated place that is inaccessible to children. Keep away from corrosive agents such as garden chemicals and de-icing salts.

3. Abide by all Federal and local regulations for the safe storage and handling of gasoline. Excess fuel should be used in other 2-cycle engine powered equipment.

There are two ways to hang your attachment for storage.

1) To use hanger cap, push in button (L) and place hanger cap (M) over end of the lower unit drive shaft housing. Slightly rotate cap from side to side until the button locks into place.

2) The secondary hole (N) in lower unit drive shaft housing can also be used for hanging purposes.

1. No spark. Check spark. Remove spark plug. Reattach the spark plug cap and lay spark plug on metal cylinder. Pull the starter rope and watch for spark at spark plug tip. If there is no spark, repeat test with a new spark plug.

2. No fuel. Push primer bulb until bulb is full of fuel. If bulb does not fill, primary fuel delivery system is blocked. Contact a servicing dealer. If primer bulb fills, engine may be flooded (see next item).

3. Flooded engine. Remove spark plug, turn trimmer so spark plug hole is aimed at the ground. Make sure lever is in the “WARM START” position and pull starter cord 10 to 14 times. This will clear excess fuel from engine. Clean and reinstall spark plug. With the throttle trigger fully depressed, pull starter cord three times with lever at “WARM START” position. If engine does not start, move choke lever to “COLD START” and follow normal starting instructions in “STARTING AND STOPPING” section. If engine still fails to start, repeat procedure with a new spark plug.

4. Starter rope pulls harder now than when new. Contact a servicing dealer.

A LEAKING FUEL CAP IS A FIRE HAZARD AND MUST BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY.

The fuel cap contains a non-serviceable filter and a check valve. A clogged fuel filter will cause poor engine performance. If performance improves when the fuel cap is loosened, check valve may be faulty or filter clogged. Replace fuel cap if required.

This engine uses a Champion RCJ-6Y with .025″ (0,63mm) electrode gap. Use an exact replacement and replace annually.
