For proper operation of your ILLY X7.1, please follow these instructions:

1. The machine must be connected to a grounded power outlet.

2. Keep the machine clean by frequently washing the grill, the drip tray, the capsule holder, the tank, and the steam wand.

3. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Never immerse the machine in water or put it in the dishwasher.

4. The water contained in the tank must be replaced regularly.

5. Do not use the machine if the tank is empty. After changing the water, place the tank back in the machine, making sure it is inserted all the way.

6. We recommend descaling the machine at least every 2 months using a descaling agent made especially for espresso machines.

7. The machine is outfitted with a valve that maintains constant pressure; for this reason, some water may drip from the capsule holder.

When using your ILLY X7.1, always follow these safety precautions:

– Read all instructions.

– This machine is intended for household use only. Any other use is considered improper and therefore dangerous.

– Unplug the power cord from the electrical socket when the machine is not in use.

– Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles and knobs.

– This machine is manufactured to “make espresso coffee” and “prepare hot beverages”: use care to prevent scalding due to water spray or any improper use of the machine.

– Children must be kept under supervision to prevent them from playing with the appliance.

– Use the machine indoors only and away from atmospheric agents.

– To protect against fire, electric shock or personal injury do not immerse the cord, plug or body of the machine in water or any other liquid.

– Do not use the machine for purposes other than those for which it was designed.

– Do not place the machine on, or near, electrical or gas burners or inside a hot oven.

– The machine must be turned on only when being used. After use, it must be turned off by pressing the on/off button and unplugged from the power outlet.

– Before unplugging the machine, make sure that the on/off button is off (unlit).

– Do not let the cord hang over tables or countertops or touch hot surfaces.

– The appliance has to be placed in a horizontal position.

– The appliance is only to be installed in locations where it can be overseen by trained personnel.

– To reduce the risk of injury, do not drape the cord over the counter top or table top where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over unintentionally.

Before connecting the ILLY X7.1 to a power supply, please follow these steps:

1. Make sure that the machine is unplugged.

2. Pull the water tank out of the machine and fill it with fresh drinking water until the MAX mark is reached. Caution: always fill the tank with fresh, still drinking water only. Hot water or other liquids may damage the tank. Do not use the machine without water.

3. Fit the tank to the machine, making sure it is fully inserted in place.

4. Insert the capsule holder from below and turn it to the right until it locks into place.

5. Insert the plug into the outlet. Consult the following chapter to switch on the appliance.

Caution: While the machine is operating, contact with the brew head D, the steam wand O or the metal part of the capsule holder may cause burns.

Turning On:

1. Before switching on the machine, check the water level in the tank; if necessary, add water as described previously.

2. Empty and rinse out the drip tray every time you fill the water tank.

3. To switch the machine on, press the power button until it lights up. The icons in the circle will light up progressively to indicate the increase in the boiler temperature.

4. After a few minutes, when the machine reaches the operating temperature, the brew button symbol will light up and a brief beep will be emitted.

Turning Off:

To switch the machine off, press the power button until the front panel goes off. Never disconnect the plug from the power outlet when the machine is switched on.

Stand-by Mode:

The machine is programmed to reduce consumption when not in use. After 30 minutes of inactivity, the machine will switch off automatically. 5 minutes before the automatic switch-off, the power button will flash. If you want the machine to stay on, press the button.

The ILLY X7.1 machine is designed to function exclusively with illy “Iperespresso” capsules. To make coffee, carry out the following steps:

1. Turn the capsule holder to the left and remove it from the brew head.

2. Insert the capsule as shown in the figure. Note: the capsule should slide easily into place; if this is not the case take it out and reposition it correctly.

3. Insert the capsule holder in the brew head; turn the handle to the right until it locks into place.

4. Check that the coffee button is lit.

5. Press and release the coffee button; the machine will brew the programmed quantity of coffee. To stop the flow in advance, press the button again.

To make other coffees, remove the used capsule and repeat the above steps. Coffee will start flowing out a couple of seconds after you press the button; this is normal for the operation of the machine.

Warning:

– The capsules are single-dose and cannot be used to make two coffees.

– To ensure greater safety, the machine automatically stops dispensing after approximately one minute.

– Remember to empty and clean the drip tray frequently.

The ILLY X7.1 machine allows you to brew a pre-set quantity of coffee. If the quantity brewed is not the desired one, you can manually set and store a new quantity of coffee.

Setting a New Quantity of Coffee:

1. Insert a capsule into the capsule holder and secure it to the coffee brew head.

2. Place a cup beneath the capsule holder.

3. Press the coffee brew button and keep it pressed.

4. As soon as the desired quantity has been reached, release the coffee brew button.

5. The machine has now stored the new quantity of coffee.

Manual Brewing:

You can also manually adjust the quantity of coffee for each brewing, without having to change the stored settings.

1. Press the coffee brew button for 3 seconds. The machine will start brewing coffee.

2. As soon as the desired quantity has been reached, press again the coffee brew button to stop brewing.

3. By following this procedure, the machine will not store the brewed quantity and the coffee volume brewed will be only for that specific brewing.

The ILLY X7.1 features a steam wand for frothing milk. Prepare one or more cups of coffee first, then froth the milk as follows:

1. Press the steam button; the steam icon in the central circle will light up to signal that the machine is getting ready to dispense steam.

2. When the machine reaches the right temperature, the steam button will light up and emit a brief beep.

3. Place a suitable empty container (preferably a metal pitcher) beneath the steam wand and press the steam button to discharge any residual water; when only steam comes out, press the button again. Note: while steam is being dispensed, the button will flash.

4. Pour refrigerated milk into a suitable container (preferably a metal pitcher). For an optimal result, pour 75ml of cold whole milk into a container and keep the steam wand submerged in the milk for a maximum of 25 seconds.

5. Submerge the steam wand completely into the milk.

6. Press the steam button and wait for the milk to froth.

7. On reaching the desired result, press the steam button again.

8. After each use, thoroughly clean the steam wand of milk residue:

– Press the steam button for a few seconds, then press it again.

– Wait a few minutes for the wand to cool down.

– Remove the outer part (Z) and wash it under running water.

– Wipe the inside part (X) clean with a wet cloth.

Warning:

– Contact with steam and with the steam wand may cause severe burns.

– If no steam is dispensed, after about 5 minutes the machine will automatically switch back to the coffee brewing mode; a minute before this occurs the button will flash. If you want to dispense more steam, press the button.

– While the machine is warming up and in steam mode, it carries out heating cycles which may cause small amounts of steam to be discharged from the capsule holder: therefore, keep limbs and other parts of the body away from the coffee brew zone in order to avoid scalding.

The steam wand of the ILLY X7.1 can also be used to dispense hot water for making tea and infusions. Follow these steps:

1. Check that the coffee button is lit.

2. Clean the steam wand of any milk residues.

3. Place a metal pitcher beneath the steam wand.

4. Press the steam button for at least 3 seconds. The machine will start dispensing hot water, and the steam button will flash rapidly.

5. Press the steam button again on reaching the desired quantity of water.

To dispense a programmed quantity of hot water, keep the steam button pressed down for 3 seconds. The flow will stop automatically.

It is very important to avoid making coffee right after dispensing steam because the water generated by the thermo block is too hot and will impair the flavor of the coffee. For this reason, the coffee button is disabled when the thermo block temperature is too high.

To switch the machine back to the coffee mode, press the coffee button and wait until the button lights up. During this cooling down phase (approximately 10 minutes), the cup icon in the central circle will flash.

To switch the machine back to the coffee mode quickly (approximately 1 minute), carry out the following steps:

1. Place a metal pitcher beneath the steam wand.

2. Keep the steam button pressed down for 3 seconds. A programmed quantity of hot water will be dispensed, and the flow will stop automatically.

If the triangular icon on the circle flashes (1 flash every two seconds), you need to descale the ILLY X7.1. The cycle consists of a descaling phase (duration: about 14 minutes) and a rinse phase (duration: about 3 minutes). Only use descaling products made for coffee machines.

Descaling Phase (approx. 14 minutes):

1. Turn off the machine.

2. Remove the tank and fill it with 1 liter of water (up to the MAX level). Remove the capsule and capsule holder.

3. Pour the descaling solution into the tank filled with water and stir until it is completely dissolved.

4. Place a container with a minimum 1-litre capacity under the coffee brew head and the steam wand.

5. Turn on the machine: within 15 seconds from power on, press and hold the steam button until the machine gives out 4 acoustic signals (3 short ones and 1 long one). Release the button.

6. The steam button will flash, indicating the machine is ready to start the descaling cycle.

7. Press the steam button once to start the descaling cycle. The coffee and steam buttons will flash alternately.

8. Water is dispensed intermittently from the coffee brew head and the steam wand. You can temporarily stop the cycle by pressing the steam button and press it again to resume.

9. A long acoustic signal indicates the descaling phase is over. The steam button keeps on flashing.

Rinse Phase (approx. 3 minutes):

1. Remove and thoroughly wash the tank. Fill it with 1 liter of fresh water, up to the MAX level.

2. Empty and refit the container under the coffee brew head and the steam wand.

3. Press the steam button once to start the rinse cycle. The coffee and steam buttons will flash alternately.

4. Water is dispensed intermittently from the coffee brew head and the steam wand.

5. An acoustic signal will indicate that the rinse phase is over. The steam button will be steady on.

The ILLY X7.1 and its components must be cleaned at least once a week. Keep the water in the tank fresh; wash the tank and fill it daily with fresh drinking water. Do not use ethyl alcohol, solvents, abrasive sponges and/or aggressive chemicals.

Caution: Do not dry the machine and/or its components in a microwave or conventional oven.

To clean the machine, carry out the following steps:

1. Switch the machine off and disconnect the plug from the power outlet.

2. Remove the water tank and wash it under running water.

3. Empty out the capsule holder and wash it under running water.

4. Remove the grill and wash it with warm water.

5. Remove the drip tray and wash it with warm water.

6. Remove the outer end part of the steam wand.

7. Remove the inside part of the steam wand from the metal tube.

8. After separating the two components, wash them separately with warm water.

9. After washing the components, fit the inside part on the metal tube and then fit the outer part. Make sure to push them up all the way.

If the power button on your ILLY X7.1 does not light up, check the mains electrical connection and check the status of the circuit breakers protecting the home electrical system.

If your ILLY X7.1 is not making coffee, carry out the following operations:

1. Fill the water tank; make sure it is fitted completely into place.

2. Remove the capsule holder from the coffee brew head.

3. Wait until the coffee button lights up (machine ready to brew).

4. Place a container underneath the brew head and press the coffee button.

5. Dispense water for a few seconds.

6. Stop the flow.

7. Insert a new capsule in the capsule holder and fit it to the brew head; proceed with making coffee.

If you press the steam button and the machine does not dispense steam, or if steam comes out but does not froth the milk, consider the following cases:

Case a) If the steam icon in the circle is lit, wait until the steam button lights up.

Case b) If the steam icon in the circle is not lit, press the steam button and wait until the steam button lights up (machine warming up).

Case c) Possible clogging of the steam wand: switch off the machine; wait for it to cool down (at least an hour); remove any obstructions from the outlet holes of the steam wand.

If water is leaking from the brew head of your ILLY X7.1, insert a new capsule in the capsule holder and fit it to the brew head, then proceed with making coffee.

If your ILLY X7.1 is emitting fast beeps and the triangular icon is flashing, carry out the following operations:

1. Switch off the machine.

2. Fill the tank.

3. Place a container under the steam wand and press the steam button.

4. Switch on the machine and wait about 10 seconds for the coffee button to light up.

A rapidly flashing triangular icon on your ILLY X7.1 indicates that you need to carry out a descaling cycle.

If water is leaking from the inside of your ILLY X7.1, switch off the machine and unplug it.

If water is leaking from the tank after filling, empty the tank and press on the transparent rubber gasket of the coupling valve inside the tank.

Yes, any dripping that occurs during the first seconds of brewing on your ILLY X7.1 is to be considered normal.
