What do the “Cartridge is low” or “Cartridge is very low” messages mean?
Cartridge is low: Indicates the toner cartridge level is low. Actual life remaining may vary. Consider having a replacement available for when print quality is no longer acceptable. The cartridge does not need replacement yet.
Continue printing. If print quality becomes unacceptable, redistribute the toner by removing the cartridge, gently rocking it back and forth horizontally, and reinserting it.
Cartridge is very low: Indicates the toner cartridge level is very low. Actual life remaining may vary. Consider having a replacement available. Replacement is not needed now unless print quality is unacceptable.
Once a cartridge reaches Very Low, HP’s Premium Protection Warranty on that cartridge ends.
How do I change the “Very Low” supply settings?
You can change how the printer reacts when supplies reach the Very Low state. These settings persist when a new cartridge is installed.
1. From the Home screen on the control panel, scroll to and select Supplies.
2. Open the following menus: Manage Supplies > Supply Settings > Black Cartridge or Color Cartridges > Very Low Settings
3. Select one of the following options:
• Stop: Printer stops printing when the Very Low threshold is reached.
• Prompt to continue: Printer stops printing at Very Low. You can acknowledge the prompt or replace the cartridge to resume.
• Continue: Printer alerts that the cartridge is very low but continues printing without interaction. This can result in unsatisfactory print quality.
For products with fax capability:
If set to Stop or Prompt to continue, there’s a risk faxes won’t print if received while waiting. Setting to Continue allows uninterrupted fax printing past the Very Low threshold, but print quality might degrade.

How can I improve print quality?
If experiencing print-quality problems, try these solutions in order:
1. Print from a different software program: If it prints correctly, the problem is with the original software program.
2. Check the paper-type setting for the print job: Incorrect settings can cause smears, fuzzy/dark print, curled paper, scattered toner, loose toner, or missing toner areas.
• Windows: Go to Print > Properties/Preferences > Paper/Quality tab. If needed, click More… under Paper Type, expand Type is:, select the correct category and type, click OK. Click OK to close Properties, then OK to print.
• OS X: Go to File > Print. Click Show Details. Click the Media & Quality or Paper/Quality menu. Select the correct type from the Media-type list. Click Print.
3. Check toner-cartridge status:
• Step one: Print supplies status page: Press Home > Supplies > Manage Supplies > Print Supplies Status.
• Step two: Check supplies status: Look at the report for remaining life percentage. Problems can occur near end of life (Very Low). Consider replacement if quality is unacceptable. Check if you are using a genuine HP cartridge (should have “HP” or HP logo). See http://www.hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies for identification info.
4. Clean the product: Paper, toner, and dust can accumulate, causing specks, spatter, smears, streaks, lines, or repeating marks.
• Print a cleaning page: Press Home > Device Maintenance > Calibration/Cleaning > Cleaning Page. The process takes a few minutes; do not turn off the product. Discard the page when finished.
5. Visually inspect the toner cartridge:
• Remove the cartridge.

• Examine the surface of the green imaging drum. CAUTION: Do not touch the drum; fingerprints cause problems.
• If scratches, fingerprints, or damage are seen, replace the cartridge.
• Reinstall the cartridge and print test pages.
6. Check paper and the printing environment:
• Step one: Use paper that meets HP specifications: Use supported type/weight; good quality, free of defects (cuts, tears, spots, dust, wrinkles); not previously printed on; no metallic material; designed for laser printers; not too rough (smoother paper generally yields better quality).
• Step two: Check the environment: Move away from drafts; ensure temperature/humidity are within spec; avoid confined spaces; place on sturdy, level surface; ensure vents aren’t blocked; protect from airborne debris (dust, steam, grease).
• Step three: Set individual tray alignment: If text/images are misaligned from specific trays: Press Home > Administration > General Settings > Print Quality > Image Registration. Select the tray, select Print Test Page, follow instructions. Print again to verify, adjust further if needed. Touch Save or press OK.
7. Try a different print driver: If pages have unexpected lines, missing text/graphics, incorrect formatting, or substituted fonts, try a different driver. Download from http://www.hp.com/support/ljM604, http://www.hp.com/support/ljM605, http://www.hp.com/support/ljM606.
• HP PCL 6 driver: Default driver. Recommended for Windows. Best overall speed, quality, feature support. Aligned with Windows GDI.
