The GOLD MEDAL 5028 requires a 120 V~, 60 Hz electrical supply and will draw 12.7 Amps. It is recommended that this machine be plugged into a dedicated circuit. The use of an extension cord is not recommended. Ensure the cord is located to prevent a trip hazard or damage to the unit.

Follow these steps to install your GOLD MEDAL 5028:

1. Remove the machine from the carton and ensure all packaging material is removed.

2. Set the machine on a sturdy, level base or counter.

3. Remove the shipping screw from the top of the motor plate that holds the motor down during shipment.

4. Check that the spinner head is level and the bells are centered. If the bells are off-center, gently push them back into place until they are centered. For the spinner head to be level, there should be an equal gap between the bottom of the spinner head and the top of the motor plate all the way around.

5. To attach the cutter head assembly, back off the two set screws in the top of the motor shaft. Place the cutter head assembly on the shaft. Make sure the head is resting on the spinner. Tighten the two set screws with the Allen wrench supplied with your machine.

6. Place the floss pan on the machine, centering it around the machine cabinet.

7. Place the whirl grip stabilizer inside the pan, on the outside of the machine cabinet. The stabilizer helps to hold the netting in place and keeps the floss from flying out of the pan.

8. Place the non-metallic mesh screen inside the pan. The clips that are supplied with the mesh go on the outside of the floss pan. There is a top and a bottom to the screen. The screen is flared at the bottom and straight at the top. The top of the screen is at the larger diameter end.

9. Make sure all machine controls are in the “OFF” position before plugging the unit into an outlet.

Follow these steps to operate the GOLD MEDAL 5028:

1. With the main switch “OFF”, fill the spinner head. ALWAYS fill with floss sugar BEFORE you turn the motor on. Fill the head about 90% full with sugar. Do NOT overfill. Overfilling may cause the machine to vibrate. Use one heaping tablespoon of granulated sugar or one tablespoon of Flossugar.

2. Turn the MOTOR switch ON. The machine will make a humming sound and the sugar will start to liquefy and turn into floss.

3. Turn the HEAT switch ON.

4. The HEAT CONTROL knob has an infinite number of settings. Start making floss with the knob set at the highest setting. The floss should start to generate in about 30 seconds. If the machine produces smoke or the floss has a burnt taste, reduce the heat by turning the knob counterclockwise. If the machine is running but not making floss, increase the heat by turning the knob clockwise.

5. Once the floss starts to generate, pick up a cone and hold it an inch or two from the top edge. Feed the cone into the web of floss that is building in the pan. Lift the cone up with the ring of floss attached and, by rotating the cone, wrap the floss around it. For best results, rotate the cone a few inches above the pan.

6. To shut down the machine, turn the HEAT and MOTOR switches to the OFF position.

For cleaning the GOLD MEDAL 5028, follow these instructions. It is recommended to clean the machine after each use.

1. Make sure the HEAT and MOTOR switches are in the OFF position and the unit is unplugged.

2. Wipe the cabinet and pan with a clean, damp cloth. Do not use oven cleaners or abrasive materials as they will scratch the cabinet finish.

3. To clean the spinner head, remove it from the machine. Soak the spinner head in hot water with a grease-releasing dish detergent. Allow the head to soak for several hours. Rinse with clean water. For extremely dirty heads, it may be necessary to boil the spinner head in water with dish detergent to dissolve the hardened sugar. Turn on all switches and the heat control to the highest setting, and let the machine run for one minute. This will “burn-off” any sugar that may be left on the head.

The motor in the GOLD MEDAL 5028 has sealed bearings. It requires ONE drop of high-temperature oil every six months. Do NOT over oil.

If the motor on your GOLD MEDAL 5028 does not run, check the following:

1. Make sure the unit is plugged into a dedicated circuit.

2. Check for a blown fuse or tripped breaker at the electrical panel.

3. Ensure the motor switch is in the “ON” position.

4. Check for a bad cord set.

A loud, roaring, or vibrating noise from your GOLD MEDAL 5028 can be caused by a few issues:

1. The spinner head may be out of balance. Check to see if the head is filled with sugar unevenly. Turn the machine OFF and redistribute the sugar in the head.

2. The head may be filled with too much sugar. Turn the machine OFF, remove some of the sugar, and redistribute the remaining sugar evenly.

3. There could be a build-up of sugar on the head. Clean the head thoroughly.

4. The motor mounts may be damaged. Check to see if they are broken or have stretched out. Replace if necessary.

5. The motor could be bad and may need to be replaced.

If your GOLD MEDAL 5028 runs but is not producing floss, try these solutions:

1. The HEAT switch may be in the “OFF” position. Make sure it is turned ON.

2. The HEAT CONTROL may be set too low. Turn the knob clockwise to increase the heat.

3. The spinner head may be out of sugar. Turn the machine OFF and add more sugar.

4. Check for a broken or disconnected wire on the collector rings or head assembly.

If the floss produced by your GOLD MEDAL 5028 is heavy or grainy, it is usually due to one of the following reasons:

1. The HEAT CONTROL is set too high. Turn the knob counterclockwise to reduce the heat.

2. You may be using the wrong type of sugar. Standard granulated sugar works best. If you are using pre-mixed floss sugar, make sure it is from a reputable supplier.

If floss is flying out of the pan of your GOLD MEDAL 5028, check the following:

1. The HEAT CONTROL may be set too low, causing the floss to be heavy and thick. Turn the knob clockwise to increase heat.

2. The spinner head may be clogged with sugar. Clean the head thoroughly.

3. You may be using the wrong type of sugar.

4. Humidity can affect the floss. High humidity will cause the floss to be heavy and not stick to the pan or cone.

Excessive smoke from the GOLD MEDAL 5028 can be caused by the following:

1. The HEAT CONTROL is set too high. Turn the knob counterclockwise to reduce the heat.

2. The spinner head may need to be cleaned. Turn off the machine and clean the head thoroughly.

3. You may be using the wrong type of sugar.
