Please read the following important safety instructions before using your FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I:
• Keep away from children and pets. Keep hands away from paper entry. Always set to off or unplug when not in use.
• Keep foreign objects – gloves, jewelry, clothing, hair, etc. — away from shredder openings. If object enters top opening, switch to Reverse (◄◄) to back out object.
• Never use aerosol products, petroleum based lubricants or other flammable products on or near shredder. Do not use canned air on shredder.
• Do not use if damaged or defective. Do not disassemble shredder. Do not place near or over heat source or water.
• Operation, maintenance, and service requirements are covered in the instruction manual. Read the entire instruction manual before operating shredders.
• This shredder has a Disconnect Power Switch (G) that must be in the ON (I) position to operate shredder. In case of emergency, move switch to OFF (0) position. This action will stop shredder immediately.
• Avoid touching exposed cutting blades under shredder head.
• Use only designated entry for CDs/cards. Keep fingers away from CD entry.
• Do not put foreign objects in paper entry.
• Shredder must be plugged into a properly grounded wall outlet or socket of the voltage and amperage designated on the label. The grounded outlet or socket must be installed near the equipment and easily accessible. Energy converters, transformers, or extension cords should not be used with this product.
• FIRE HAZARD – Do NOT shred greeting cards with sound chips or batteries.
• For indoor use only.
• Unplug shredder before cleaning or servicing.
How do I perform a basic shredding operation with the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I?
Follow these steps for basic shredding:
1. Plug in the shredder and put the disconnect power switch in the ON (I) position.
2. Press the ON/OFF (I) button to activate (it will turn blue).
3. Feed paper into the paper entry and release. To shred a CD, credit card, or junk mail, feed it into the designated entry and release.
4. After shredding is complete, you can set the shredder to OFF (O). Alternatively, the shredder will automatically go into sleep mode after 2 minutes of inactivity.
How does the 100% Jam Proof System work on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I?
The 100% Jam Proof System on your FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I eliminates paper jams and powers through tough jobs by electronically measuring paper thickness to prevent jams before they occur.
1. The sheet capacity indicator will light up to show you how much you are feeding:
• Up to GREEN: More sheets can be added.
• Up to YELLOW: Productivity is optimized.
• Up to RED: Too many sheets have been inserted. You should remove several sheets until the indicator is below red.
2. If a misfeed occurs, all indicators will light up and the shredder will pause for 3-6 seconds to attempt an automatic correction.
3. Wait for the flashing to stop. Once the automatic correction is complete, regular shredding will resume. If the reverse icon illuminates after the paper has been reversed, press reverse again and remove the paper. Otherwise, regular shredding will resume and you can continue to shred.
How do I test the SafeSense® Technology on my FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I?
The patented SafeSense® Technology automatically stops the shredder when hands touch the paper opening. To test this feature:
1. Turn the shredder on to activate SafeSense®.
2. Touch the test area around the paper entry and look for the SafeSense® indicator (a yellow light depicting a hand) to illuminate.
3. If the light illuminates, the SafeSense® feature is active and working properly. The shredder will stop shredding when your hand is on the entry.
How does Sleep Mode work on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I?
The Sleep Mode is an energy-saving feature that shuts down the shredder after 2 minutes of inactivity.
• Entering Sleep Mode: The shredder will automatically enter sleep mode after 2 minutes of not being used.
• Exiting Sleep Mode: To get the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I out of sleep mode, you can either touch the control panel or insert paper into the paper entry.
How do I clean the auto-start infrared sensors on my FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I?
Paper detection sensors are designed for maintenance-free operation. However, on rare occasions, the sensors may become blocked by paper dust, causing the motor to run even if there is no paper present. The two paper detection sensors are located in the center of the paper entry. To clean the sensors:
1. Turn off and unplug the shredder.
2. Lift the CD flap.
3. Locate the Auto-start infrared sensor.
4. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol.
5. Using the cotton swab, wipe away any contamination from the paper sensors.
What should I do if a troubleshooting indicator light is on?
• Bin Full Indicator (red trash can): When illuminated, the shredder waste bin is full and needs to be emptied. Use Fellowes waste bag 3605801.
• SafeSense® Indicator (yellow hand): If your hands are too close to the paper entry, this indicator will illuminate and the shredder will stop. If SafeSense® is active for 3 seconds, the shredder will automatically turn off. You must press the power button on the control panel to resume shredding.
• Remove Paper Indicator (red bar graph with arrow): When illuminated, press reverse (◄◄) and remove paper. Reduce the paper quantity to an acceptable amount and re-feed it into the paper entry.
• Door Open Indicator (red door): The shredder will not run if the cabinet door is open. When illuminated, close the door to resume shredding.
• Straight Feed Indicator: When illuminated, remove the paper and feed it straight into the paper entry.
How can I disable or re-engage the Jam Proof System on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I?
1. To Disable: To disable the Jam Proof system, press and hold the auto and reverse (◄◄) buttons at the same time.
2. Confirmation: Once disabled, the blue Auto light is no longer illuminated.
3. To Re-engage: To re-engage the system, repeat step 1.
Note: Shredding can continue with the system disabled; however, a paper jam may occur with too many sheets and the Remove Paper icon will illuminate.
How do I clear a paper jam if the Jam Proof System is disabled on my FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485I?
If a jam occurs while the Jam Proof System is disabled, follow these steps:
1. Press and hold the forward (►►) button until the document is completely through the shredder.
2. If the jam is not cleared, press reverse (◄◄) briefly.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the paper is shredded.
4. If steps 1-3 do not clear the jam, reverse the paper all the way out, remove several sheets, and re-feed the smaller stack of paper.
