What is the 100% Jam Proof System on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI and how does it work?
The 100% Jam Proof System on your FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI eliminates paper jams and powers through tough jobs. It works in three stages:
1. Advanced Jam Prevention: The system electronically measures paper thickness to prevent paper jams before they start. The sheet capacity indicator will light up to show the paper thickness:
• Up to GREEN: More sheets can be added.
• Up to YELLOW: Productivity is optimized.
• Up to RED: Too many sheets have been inserted.
2. If the indicator is red, remove several sheets until the indicator is below the red level to avoid a jam.
3. You can then continue shredding with 100% Jam Proof protection.
In case of a misfeed:
• All indicators will light up, and the shredder will pause for 3-6 seconds to automatically correct the issue. Wait for the flashing to stop before regular shredding resumes.
• If the Straight Feed indicator illuminates, remove the paper and feed it straight into the shredder.
• If the reverse indicator illuminates after the paper has been reversed, press the reverse button and remove the paper. Otherwise, regular shredding will resume.
How do I operate and maintain the Auto Oil™ feature on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI?
The Auto Oil™ feature automatically lubricates the cutters to enhance performance and extend shredder life. All cross-cut shredders require oil for peak performance. If not oiled, the machine may experience diminished sheet capacity, intrusive noise when shredding, and could ultimately stop running.
Set-Up and Testing:
1. Before using, fill the oil reservoir with 12 oz. (355 ml) of Fellowes shredder oil.
2. To manually oil the shredder, press the auto and forward buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.
Refilling the Oil:
1. The low oil indicator light will signal when your reservoir needs refilling.
2. To maintain shredder performance, refill the oil reservoir with up to 12 oz. (355 ml) of shredder oil (Fellowes #35250).
3. Once refilled, the automatic oiling will resume.
How do I set up and test the SafeSense® Technology on my FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI?
SafeSense® Technology automatically stops the shredder when hands touch the paper opening. Follow these steps to test the feature:
1. Turn the shredder on to activate SafeSense®.
2. Touch the test area around the paper entry and look for the SafeSense® indicator to illuminate (yellow).
3. If the indicator illuminates, SafeSense® is active and working properly.
How does Sleep Mode work on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI?
Sleep Mode is an energy-saving feature that shuts down the shredder after 2 minutes of inactivity. To get the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI out of sleep mode, you can either touch the control panel or insert paper into the paper entry.
How do I clean the auto-start infrared sensors on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI?
The paper detection sensors are designed for maintenance-free operation. However, on rare occasions, the sensors may become blocked by paper dust, causing the motor to run even if there is no paper present. Two paper detection sensors are located in the center of the paper entry.
To clean the sensors:
1. Turn off and unplug the shredder.
2. Lift the CD flap.
3. Locate the Auto-start infrared sensor.
4. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol.
5. Using the cotton swab, wipe away any contamination from the paper sensors.
How should I prepare the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI for shipping?
If you need to ship your FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI, the oil must be drained from the Auto Oil™ reservoir. Follow these steps:
1. Open the cabinet door and remove the basket to access the oil drain plug.
2. Place a suitable container under the drain.
3. Remove the plug and let the oil drain out completely.
4. Replace the plug securely.
What do the different indicator lights on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI mean?
Low Oil Indicator: When illuminated, the shredder is out of oil and needs to be refilled. See the Product Maintenance section for refill instructions. For optimum performance, use Fellowes oil (35250).
Bin Full Indicator: When illuminated, the shredder waste bin is full and needs to be emptied. Use Fellowes waste bag 3605801.
SafeSense® Indicator: If hands are too close to the paper entry, the SafeSense® indicator will illuminate and the shredder will stop shredding. If SafeSense® is active for 3 seconds, the shredder will automatically turn off and the user must press the power button on the control panel to resume shredding.
Remove Paper Indicator: When illuminated, press reverse and remove paper. Reduce paper quantity to an acceptable amount and refeed into paper entry.
Door Open Indicator: The shredder will not run if the cabinet door is open. When illuminated, close the door to resume shredding.
Straight Feed Indicator: When illuminated, remove paper and feed straight into paper entry.
How can I disable the Jam Proof System on the FELLOWES POWERSHRED 485CI and clear a jam manually?
To disable the 100% Jam Proof System:
1. Press and hold the auto and reverse buttons at the same time.
2. Once disabled, the blue Auto light will no longer be illuminated. To re-engage the system, repeat step 1.
To clear a jam with the system disabled:
Shredding can continue with the system disabled; however, a paper jam may occur with too many sheets, and the Remove Paper icon will illuminate.
1. If a jam occurs, press and hold the forward button until the document is completely through the shredder.
2. If the jam is not cleared, press the reverse button briefly.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the paper is shredded.
4. If steps 1-3 do not clear the jam, reverse the paper all the way out, remove several sheets, and refeed.
